    Kurzfassung: Wer das Berliner Olympiagelände besucht, stolpert unweigerlich über das Fortwirkungen der NS-Monumentalität des Geländes – und auch über ihre bis heute weitgehend ungebrochene Tradierung von völkischer und antisemitischer Monumentalität. Die Kritik daran ist vielfältig, aber bisher eher lose verwoben: Wo steht die Debatte – oder: wo stehen die Debatten? Welche Perspektiven gibt es, aus historischer, musealer, künstlerischer, politischer, sportlicher oder denkmalschützender Perspektive? Wo lassen sich Brücken der Kritik schlagen, wo sind unterschiedliche Perspektiven widersprüchlich, an welchen Stellen bedarf es grundlegender Neuorientierung oder Neujustierung der Debatte? Der Sammelband versucht, diese Fragen anzureißen, Wege der Auseinandersetzung zu skizzieren oder zu initiieren, aber auch grundlegende Probleme zu benennen.
    Kurzfassung: Anyone who visits Berlin’s Olympic Park will inevitably stumble across the continued effects of the site's Nazi monumentality—and also its largely unbroken tradition of ethnic and anti-Semitic monumentality. The criticism of this is diverse, but so far rather loosely interwoven: Where does the debate stand—or, indeed, where do the debates stand? What views are there from the perspectives of history, museums, art, politics, sport or monument protection? Where can bridges of criticism be built, where are the different perspectives contradictory, and where is fundamental reorientation or readjustment of the debate(s) required? This anthology attempts to address these questions, not only to outline or initiate paths of debate but also to identify fundamental problems.

    Kurzfassung: "Es gehört zu den größten Mängeln fast aller Theorien der Demokratie, mit erstaunlicher Hartnäckigkeit immer wieder zu vergessen, dass die meisten Mitglieder des von ihnen lauthals beschworenen Souveräns stets auch arbeitende Subjekte sind". Welche Rolle spielt die Organisation von Arbeitsverhältnissen für die Bestandssicherung eines demokratischen Gemeinwesens? Das ist die Frage, der Axel Honneth in seiner neuen großen Monographie nachgeht, deren Schlüsselbegriffe "gesellschaftliche Arbeit" und "soziale Arbeitsteilung" sind. Seine zentrale These lautet, dass die Teilnahme an der demokratischen Willensbildung an die Voraussetzung einer transparent und fair geregelten Arbeitsteilung gebunden ist. Honneth begründet zunächst, warum es gerechtfertigt ist, die Arbeitsverhältnisse auf ihre Demokratieverträglichkeit hin zu prüfen. Dann zeichnet er die Entwicklung der Arbeitsbedingungen seit dem Beginn des Kapitalismus im 19. Jahrhundert nach. Fluchtpunkt dieses mit eindrücklichen literarischen Zeugnissen illustrierten historischen Streifzugs, der unter anderem in die Welt der Landarbeiter, der - zumeist weiblichen - Dienstboten und der ersten Industriearbeiter führt, ist die Vermutung, dass die heutigen Arbeitsverhältnisse zunehmend die Chancen zur aktiven Teilnahme an der demokratischen Meinungs- und Willensbildung untergraben. Daher wird im letzten Teil des Buches umrissen, an welchen Scharnierstellen eine Politik der Arbeit heute anzusetzen hätte, um den sich abzeichnenden Missständen entgegenzuwirken und zu einer dringend benötigten Neubelebung demokratischer Partizipation beizutragen

By appealing differently to different political sensibilities, basic income has persisted in the political imagination for centuries. In this deeply erudite and original work, Anton Jäger and Daniel Zamora offer the first historical examination of basic income as a policy of convenience--and, critically, as an intellectual backstop for the shortcomings of capitalism. With modern origins in works of neoliberals like Friedrich Hayek, basic income was conceived as a form of market-friendly welfare state-a safety net around capitalism that wouldn't impinge on capitalism. Although neoliberals failed to make the idea a reality, they succeeded in seeding a fascination that would permeate all corners of late-century capitalism, from supply-side Democrats to neoclassical economists and barons of Silicon Valley.     Kurzfassung: Global Labour History has rapidly gained ground as a field of study in the 21st century, attracting interest in the Global South and North alike. Scholars derive inspiration from the broad perspective and the effort to perceive connections between global trends over time in work and labour relations, incorporating slaves, indentured labourers and sharecroppers, housewives and domestic servants. Casting this sweeping analytical gaze, this book discusses the core concepts ‘capitalism’ and ‘workers’, and refines notions such as ‘coerced labour’, ‘household strategies’ and ‘labour markets’. It explores in new ways the connections between labourers in different parts of the world, arguing that both ‘globalisation’ and modern labour management originated in agriculture in the Global South and were only later introduced in Northern industrial settings. It reveals that 19th-century chattel slavery was frequently replaced by other forms of coerced labour, and it reconstructs the laborious 20th-century attempts of the International Labour Organisation to regulate labour standards supra-nationally. The book also pays attention to the relational inequality through which workers in wealthy countries benefit from the exploitation of those in poor countries. The final part addresses workers’ resistance and acquiescence: why collective actions often have unanticipated consequences; why and how workers sometimes organise massive flights from exploitation and oppression; and why ‘proletarian revolutions’ took place in pre-industrial or industrialising countries and never in fully developed capitalist societies.

    Kurzfassung: The first work to systematically investigate the potential for a dialogue between postcolonial studies and the history of Zionism. There is an "unacknowledged kinship" between studies of Zionism and post-colonial studies, a kinship that deserves to be both discovered and acknowledged. Unacknowledged Kinships strives to facilitate a conversation between the historiography of Zionism and postcolonial studies by identifying and exploring possible linkages and affiliations between their subjects as well as the limits of such connections. The contributors to this volume discuss central theoretical concepts developed within the field of postcolonial studies, and they use these concepts to analyze crucial aspects of the history of Zionism while contextualizing Zionist thought, politics, and culture within colonial and postcolonial histories. This book also argues that postcolonial studies could gain from looking at the history of Zionism as an example of not only colonial domination but also the seemingly contradictory processes of national liberation and self-empowerment. Unacknowledged Kinships is the first work to systematically investigate the potential for a dialogue between postcolonial studies and Zionist historiography. It is also unique in suggesting that postcolonial concepts can be applied to the history of European Zionism just as comprehensively as to the history of Zionism in Palestine and Israel or Arab countries.     Kurzfassung: This book investigates state-building, distorted identities, and separatism in the Republic of Moldova. It presents research on the historical preconditions and spread of the secessionist movement in Transnistria, the war in the Dniester River valley, and the diplomatic deadlock of the Transnistrian problem. It examines the conflicting positions that political parties, the public, and experts have taken towards the problems that challenge the nation- and state-building processes in this post-Soviet state. Additional focal points include the reassertion of Russia's power in the post-Soviet space, Ukraine's effort to become a major political player in the region, and Romania’s attempt to retrieve its influence in Moldova. This study demonstrates that separatism generates mutually exclusive nation-building projects on the territory of a single state, that international actors play a significant role in this process, and that domestic and external factors hinder the development of a resolution of the so-called "frozen conflict" over Transnistria.

    Kurzfassung: When U.S. war resisters turned to Canada as refuge during the Vietnam War and the Afghanistan/Iraq Wars, they not only hoped to forestall deployment to a combat zone but also to build new lives and make a new home abroad. In her empirical study, Sarah J. Grünendahl explores and juxtaposes how well the two war resister 'generations' have been able to establish themselves after all and to what extent they partake in Canadian society. The comparison is instructive for migration and refugee studies altogether: The war resisters in the sample, unlike many other migrant populations, did not have to contend with language and cultural barriers in their destination country, given similarities between the United States and Canada. Sarah J. Grünendahl's research thus allows for an analysis of the effects of residency on migrants' adaptation and participation in the receiving society, isolated from these two common barriers. Further, the study sheds light on how refugees and non-citizens can employ civic engagement to claim a place for themselves and overcome societal exclusion. About the author Sarah J. Grünendahl is research assistant at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Cultural Studies at the University of Applied Sciences Düsseldorf and earned her doctorate in Political Science at the University of Siegen. Her research interests include migration and refugee studies, the effects of legal status on migrants' incorporation, and the nexus between societal participation, place (attachment) and identity.

This text, contains theoretical models that illustrate the economic mechanisms of different types of CT measures. A vast array of empirical studies and regularities are also presented. Some chapters discuss in depth the empirical results in the literature as well as the underlying statistical/econometric methodologies that go beyond ordinary regression. General Appendix A provides an exposition of the concept of compensating surplus and elements of the basic game theory, to help the reader with an economics background recapitulate micro theory concepts used in the book. General Appendix B lays out the notions of hypothesis testing, regression and more advanced statistical/econometric methods, so that the reader understands or at least can have an intuitive idea of how the results are derived and what they mean with some degree of inner comfort. Aimed at students at the intermediate undergraduate and graduate levels, the text requires knowledge of basic micro, first-order conditions of profit or utility maximization and cost minimization, and statistical concepts of hypothesis testing and regression. This textbook is intended for use in courses in economics, political science, criminal justice, and emergency management. Additionally, professionals working with national security in government and non-governmental organizations may find it useful. .

    Kurzfassung: Der belgische Schriftsteller und Historiker Reybrouck ist durch ein monumentales Werk über die Geschichte Kongos (siehe "Kongo", ID-A 24/12) schon einem gröe︣ren Publikum bekannt geworden. Die in diesem Buch beschriebene Revolusi (Revolution) bezeichnet die Periode, während der die Indonesier nach der Besetzung durch Japan einen Guerilla-Krieg gegen die zurückkehrenden niederländischen Kolonialherren führten und schliesslich im Dezember 1949 die internationale Anerkennung der im August 1945 proklamierten nationalen Unabhängigkeit erreichten. Für Reybrouck waren diese Ereignisse, die ausserhalb Indonesiens bis heute kaum beachtet werden, weltgeschichtlich bedeutsam. Er schildert die ungemein komplexen diplomatischen, militärischen und innenpolitischen Entwicklungen lebhaft und auch für den Laien gut nachvollziehbar. Dabei bezieht er sich auf fast 200 ausführliche Interviews mit, überwiegend indonesischen, Zeitzeugen. In der fesselnden Darstellung spannt Reybrouck den Bogen von den Anfängen der indonesischen Geschichte bis in die 1950er-Jahre und vermag es, auch den Blick Betroffener einzubeziehen.     Kurzfassung: "In the past decade, the Kurdish question has re-established itself at the heart of the regional political debates at a time when the Middle East is once again engulfed in conflict and violence. On numerous occasions during the second half of the 20th century, Kurdish nationalism has managed to generate and maintain strong appeal amongst Kurdish populations in Iraq, Iran, Turkey and Syria, but these states have perceived Kurdish ambitions as a threat to their national security and regional stability. At the beginning of the 21st century, Kurdish political activism has reached a new height with Kurdish movements in Iraq, Turkey and Syria establishing themselves as important political actors in the domestic politics of these states. The consolidation of Kurdish autonomy in Iraq in 2005 and the establishment of a Kurdish de facto autonomous region within Syria in 2012 have turned the Kurds into actors capable of influencing regional political developments and resultantly enabled them to forge stronger relations with the international forces involved in the region. The rise of the pro- Kurdish movement in Turkish politics in the past two decades, especially its strong electoral performance in a number of elections since 2015, has placed the Kurds at the heart of the political developments in Turkey too"

    Kurzfassung: Das Fahrrad ist das langlebigste und weitest verbreite Fahrzeug der Welt, von dem in seiner zweihundertjährigen Geschichte mehr als eine Milliarde Exemplare gebaut wurden. Dieses Buch bietet erstmals eine länderübergreifende und umfassende Darstellung der technischen und historischen Entwicklung des Fahrrads von den frühesten Laufmaschinen als Reitpferdersatz bis hin zu modernen Rennrädern, Mountainbikes und Liegerädern. Es zeichnet die Entwicklung des Fahrrads auch anhand der einzelnen Komponenten wie Antrieben, Schaltungen, Federungen, Bremsen, Lichtanlagen, Speichenrädern und Luftreifen nach, die von Erfindern und Herstellern hinsichtlich Material, Ergonomie und Fahrphysik zuwege gebracht wurden.     Kurzfassung: Schon vor 50 Jahren kämpfte Afrika um seine Kunst, die während der Kolonialzeit massenweise in europäische Museen gelangt war. Und es fand durchaus Unterstützung im Westen. Am Ende jedoch war der Kampf nicht nur vergebens, er wurde auch erfolgreich vergessen gemacht. Auf der Grundlage von unzähligen unbekannten Quellen aus Europa und Afrika erzählt Bénédicte Savoy die gespenstische Geschichte einer verpassten Chance, einer Niederlage, die heute mit umso größerer Wucht auf uns zurückschlägt. Afrikas Bemühungen um seine in der Kolonialzeit nach Europa verbrachte Kunst sind keineswegs neu. Schon bald nach 1960, als 18 ehemalige Kolonien die Unabhängigkeit erlangten, wurde von afrikanischen Intellektuellen, Politikern und Museumsleuten eine ungeheure Dynamik in Gang gesetzt. In ganz Europa suchten daraufhin Politikerinnen und Politiker, Journalisten, Akademiker und einige Museumsleute einen Weg, afrikanische Kulturgüter im Sinne einer postkolonialen und postrassistischen Solidarität zurückzugeben. Die Argumente aber, mit denen andere versuchten, die Forderungen aus Afrika zu entkräften und Lösungen zu verhindern, ähneln auf frappierende Weise denen von heute. Schließlich verlief alles im Sand. „Gebt koloniale Raubkunst zurück! Dafür engagiert sich Bénédicte Savoy. In ihrem Buch zeigt die Kunsthistorikerin nun, dass ihr Kampf ein alter ist. Schon in den 1960er-Jahren drängten die neu gegründeten Staaten Afrikas auf eine Rückführung – erfolglos.     Kurzfassung: "THE BIRTH OF SOLIDARITY traces the emergence of social welfare legislation through debates about workplace accidents in France. François Ewald shows that with industrialization in the 19th century, workplace accidents became increasingly frequent and complex, and the rise of statistics and insurance shifted ideas about who should be held responsible. Whereas early commentators claimed workers and their patrons were responsible for the consequences of workplace accidents, by 1898 the French government declared that workplace accidents needed to be covered by a state-regulated social security policy. This shift in approach marked the emergence of the modern French welfare state. The book is divided into three parts. In the first, Ewald looks at the 1841 law governing child labor in factories and 1830s court cases concerning workplace accidents to show how these industrial regulations challenged the earlier liberal philosophies involving a social contract, which had assumed individual benevolence as the basis for all social assistance. In contrast, new forms of patronage emerging in the 1840s required French employers to provide compensation for their workers, including pensions, education, and company stores. The second part considers the development of insurance as an outgrowth of the philosophy of Adolphe Quételet, who applied probabilistic calculus to social phenomena, like risk. Ewald shows that insurance gave workers a way to save for the future and the wealthy a guarantee against accidents. The third part looks at legislators' increased focus on social solidarity rather than individual responsibility in the latter half of the 19th century, with the 1898 labor law solidifying the government's role as a regulator acting on behalf of workers, and insurance agents' role in assessing fault and responsibility. Ewald, who had been a Maoist activist during the French student uprising of May 1968, became Michel Foucault's doctoral student and assistant in the 1970s. When Foucault's partner Daniel Defert was commissioned by the French Labour Ministry to do a series of studies on the history of workplace accidents, Defert enlisted Ewald, along with a number of Foucault's other students, to conduct the research.     Kurzfassung: Die etwa 2.000 Klein- und Mittelstädte in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland sind ein wichtiger Bestandteil unseres Siedlungsnetzes. In ihnen lebt etwa die Hälfte der Einwohner des Landes. Zentrale Herausforderungen der Stadterneuerung in ihnen, wie der Strukturwandel in Handel und Gewerbe, der Verfall überkommener historischer Substanz, die Zunahme von Leerständen und Problemimmobilien und die allgemein sinkende Vitalität, werden häufig nicht aktiv genug bearbeitet. Vielerorts gibt es zwar sehr aktive Bürger*innen, die sich in Vereinen und informellen zivilgesellschaftlichen Netzwerken organisieren und intensiv in die Stadtentwicklung einbezogen werden wollen, doch Perspektivlosigkeit, Überalterung und Nachwuchsmangel und der Mangel an Ressourcen begrenzen oft ihre Möglichkeiten deutlich. Obwohl in den einzelnen Kommunen ein großer Wissens- und Erfahrungsschatz über neue Verfahren und Instrumente der Stadterneuerung vorhanden ist, sind gute Beispiele aus Klein- und Mittelstädten häufig wenig bekannt und wurden bisher nur in Ansätzen wissenschaftlich untersucht. Hier setzt der vorliegende Band mit seinem inhaltlichen Schwerpunkt auf der Situation der Stadterneuerung in Klein- und Mittelstädten an. Neben eher grundsätzlichen Beiträgen widmet er sich auch Erfahrungen aus der Praxis in ganz unterschiedlichen Förderkontexten. Die Herausgebenden Dr.-Ing. Uwe Altrock ist Professor für Stadterneuerung und Planungstheorie an der Universität Kassel. Dr.-Ing. Detlef Kurth ist Professor für Stadtplanung an der TU Kaiserslautern. Dr.-Ing.     Kurzfassung: Drawing on Indigenous peoples' struggles against settler colonialism, Theft Is Property! reconstructs the concept of dispossession as a means of explaining how shifting configurations of law, property, race, and rights have functioned as modes of governance, both historically and in the present. Through close analysis of arguments by Indigenous scholars and activists from the nineteenth century to the present, Robert Nichols argues that dispossession has come to name a unique recursive process whereby systematic theft is the mechanism by which property relations are generated. In so doing, Nichols also brings long-standing debates in anarchist, Black radical, feminist, Marxist, and postcolonial thought into direct conversation with the frequently overlooked intellectual contributions of Indigenous peoples.

    Kurzfassung: "Global decarbonization is humanity's most pressing challenge. Powering Empire offers the first historical roadmap charting how the world was carbonized. It also jettisons some misleading yet prevalent myths and clears impediments to this task. One is the naïve assumption that we are currently living in the age of oil, or even post-oil, and that coal fumes are a thing of the past. Quite the reverse! This is still the age of coal and much of what we associate with oil rests upon the foundations of coal. We must also overturn the conjecture that global carbonization started in Western Europe and then spread to the rest of the world. Settings like the Ottoman Empire were early arenas for testing and adopting coal and steamships. The steamer-friendly corridors running between Europe and Asia--which would become the "Middle East"--stimulated British industrialization and imperial expansion simultaneously. Finally, we must resist the control of energy on all things fossil: the globalization of the hydrocarbon economy cannot be reduced to considerations of fueling alone. Coal depots were also created as a pretext for imperial land grab, out of concerns about ballasting, and stemmed from aspects of coal that had little to do with its combustion. This book, therefore, reveals a thickening carbon-intensive entanglement of energy and empire, of Western and non-Western powers, thereby excavating unfamiliar resources--from Islamic risk-aversion, through Ottoman attitudes to the underground, to Gandhian vegetarianism--for a climate justice that relies on a more diverse ethical repertoire."

    Kurzfassung: Decolonization revolutionized the international order during the twentieth century. Yet standard histories that present the end of colonialism as an inevitable transition from a world of empires to one of nations - a world in which self-determination was synonymous with nation-building - obscure just how radical this change was. Drawing on the political thought of anticolonial intellectuals and statesmen such as Nnamdi Azikiwe, W.E.B Du Bois, George Padmore, Kwame Nkrumah, Eric Williams, Michael Manley, and Julius Nyerere, this important new account of decolonization reveals the full extent of their unprecedented ambition to remake not only nations but the world. Adom Getachew shows that African, African American, and Caribbean anticolonial nationalists were not solely or even primarily nation-builders. Responding to the experience of racialized sovereign inequality, dramatized by interwar Ethiopia and Liberia, Black Atlantic thinkers and politicians challenged international racial hierarchy and articulated alternative visions of worldmaking. Seeking to create an egalitarian postimperial world, they attempted to transcend legal, political, and economic hierarchies by securing a right to self-determination within the newly founded United Nations, constituting regional federations in Africa and the Caribbean, and creating the New International Economic Order. Using archival sources from Barbados, Trinidad, Ghana, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, Worldmaking after Empire recasts the history of decolonization, reconsiders the failure of anticolonial nationalism, and offers a new perspective on debates about today's international order.

Aber noch immer ist die grandiose Synthese, in der Hegel Christentum und politische Freiheit zusammengeführt hat, für viele von enormer Orientierungskraft - trotz oder gerade wegen der einflussreichen Provokationen Friedrich Nietzsches. Jedoch hat sich im Religionsdenken des 20. Jahrhunderts eine andere Sichtweise entwickelt, wie Hans Joas in seinem neuen Buch zeigt. Sie beruht auf einer Konzeption von Geschichte, die zukunftsoffener, und einem Begriff von Freiheit, der reicher ist als bei Hegel. Anhand von sechzehn ausgewählten Denkern arbeitet Joas dieses neue Verständnis von Religion und Freiheit heraus, das weder intellektualistisch verkürzt noch eurozentrisch verengt ist. Daraus ergibt sich ein entschiedenes Plädoyer für eine Globalgeschichte des moralischen Universalismus

Doch wo beginnt der Antisemitismus, und wie neu ist, was wir heute erleben? Peter Schäfer beschreibt klar und konzise, wie sich seit der Antike antisemitische Stereotype verbreiteten, zu Verfolgung und Vernichtung führten und auch nach der Shoah virulent sind. Schon in der vorchristlichen Antike gab es Judenhass, Ghettos und Pogrome, doch erst die neutestamentlichen Schriften schufen mit ihrer Gegnerschaft zum Judentum die Voraussetzungen für Ritualmordlegenden und Verfolgungen im christlichen Mittelalter. Luther rief zur Auslöschung der "Teufelskinder" auf, die Aufklärer fanden das Judentum unvernünftig, Wissenschaftler begründeten den Judenhass rassistisch, und allzu viele waren bereit, sich an der "Endlösung der Judenfrage" zu beteiligen oder schauten lieber weg. Man könnte meinen, dass der Schock des Massenmordes heilsam war, doch Antizionismus und rechte Ideologien dringen seit Jahren mit antisemitischem Gepäck in die Mitte der Gesellschaft vor und bereiten den Boden für neue Gewalt. Peter Schäfers Buch ist Pflichtlektüre für alle, die besser verstehen wollen, warum der Antisemitismus so alt und zugleich so aktuell ist und was er für Juden in der Nachbarschaft, in Israel und überall auf der Welt bedeutet

    Kurzfassung: Deutschland und Frankreich benötigen stetige Metallimporte, um ihr Wirtschaftsmodell aufrechtzuerhalten. Internationale Kooperation ist unerlässlich, damit diese Importe zuverlässig und nachhaltig verlaufen. Doch welche Potenziale bieten sich in diesem Bereich, welche Grenzen sind dabei zu erkennen? Dieser Frage geht Yann Wernert durch einen Fallstudienvergleich mit prozessanalytischen Methoden und auf der theoretischen Grundlage des neoliberalen Institutionalismus nach. Er zeigt, dass beide Länder ihre Bemühungen als reaktive Mittelmächte gestalten. Sie wollen durch staatliche Rohstoffstrategien wirtschaftliche, strategische und Nachhaltigkeitsziele erreichen.     Kurzfassung: Die Texte des Bandes befassen sich schwerpunktmäßig mit den Erfahrungen der Quartiersentwicklung im Globalen Süden und der Frage, wie es gelingen kann, selbst in Situationen geringster Ressourcenverfügbarkeit und größter Not menschenwürdige Lebensbedingungen auf der Quartiersebene zu verwirklichen. Von diesen Beispielen können wir für unsere eigenen Herausforderungen auf unterschiedlichste Weise profitieren: zum einen in methodischer Hinsicht, stellen sie doch höchste Anforderungen an die Mobilisierung von Selbsthilfekräften und die Beteiligung von Bewohnerinnen und Bewohnern, wenn sie überhaupt ernsthaft an einer schrittweisen Aufwertung interessiert sind; zum anderen hinsichtlich des Umgangs mit den Einflüssen des globalen und lokalen Immobilienkapitals, das auf eine maximale Verwertung insbesondere von günstig gelegenen Lagen mit Quartieren geringer Dichte und immobilienwirtschaftliche Erträge abzielt und dabei nicht selten die Lebensbedingungen der ärmsten Städter fundamental in Frage stellt. Die Zielgruppen Studierende und Dozierende der Stadtentwicklung und Stadtplanung sowie Praktikerinnen und Praktiker. Die Herausgeber Dr.-Ing. Anknüpfend an Karl Polanyis bahnbrechendes Buch The Great Transformation rekapituliert Ther die rasanten Veränderungen der letzten drei Jahrzehnte, die westlich des ehemaligen Eisernen Vorhangs nicht minder dramatische Folgen hatten als östlich davon.

It has declared all-out war against the federal government and its agents, and has carried out--with military precision--an escalating campaign of terror against the American public.     Kurzfassung: Since the elections of 2002, Erdogan's AKP has dominated the political scene in Turkey. This period has often been understood as a break from a 'secular' pattern of state-building. But in this book, Ceren Lord shows how Islamist mobilisation in Turkey has been facilitated from within the state by institutions established during early nation-building. Lord thus challenges the traditional account of Islamist AKP's rise that sees it either as a grassroots reaction to the authoritarian secularism of the state or as a function of the state's utilisation of religion. Tracing struggles within the state, Lord also shows how the state's principal religious authority, the Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) competed with other state institutions to pursue Islamisation. Through privileging Sunni Muslim access to state resources to the exclusion of others, the Diyanet has been a key actor ensuring persistence and increasing salience of religious markers in political and economic competition, creating an amenable environment for Islamist mobilisation.

    Kurzfassung: Today our societies face great challenges with water, in terms of both quantity and quality, but many of these challenges have already existed in the past. Focusing on Asia, Water Societies and Technologies from the Past and Present seeks to highlight the issues that emerge or re-emerge across different societies and periods, and asks what they can tell us about water sustainability.     Kurzfassung: In seinem neuen Buch rekonstruiert Axel Honneth die Idee der Anerkennung in der Vielfalt der Bedeutungen, die sie seit Beginn der Moderne in Europa angenommen hat. Mit Blick auf drei wirkmächtige europäische Denktraditionen - die französische, die britische und die deutsche - zeichnet er nach, wie sie aufgrund unterschiedlicher politisch-sozialer Herausforderungen jeweils ganz verschiedene philosophische Interpretationen und gesellschaftspolitische Ausprägungen erfahren hat. Während in Frankreich mit "reconnaissance" die Gefahr des individuellen Selbstverlustes assoziiert wird, gilt der Prozess der "recognition" in Großbritannien als Bedingung der normativen Selbstkontrolle; und hierzulande meint Anerkennung auch die Vollzugsform allen wahren Respekts unter Menschen. Erstaunlich ist, dass keine dieser drei Bedeutungen, deren Wurzeln bis ins 17. Jahrhundert zurückreichen, in der Gegenwart an Einfluss verloren hat. Ob sie sich heute eher ergänzen oder gegenseitig im Weg stehen, zeigt diese Studie, die auch einen Beitrag zur Klärung unseres aktuellen politisch-kulturellen Selbstverständnisses leistet

    Kurzfassung: Not so long ago, it seemed the intellectual positions on globalization were clear, with advocates and opponents making their respective cases in decidedly contrasting terms. Recently, however, the fronts have shifted dramatically. The aim of this publication is to contribute philosophical depth to the debates on globalization conducted within various academic fields - principally by working out its normative dimensions. The interdisciplinary nature of this book's contributors also serves to scientifically ground the ethical-philosophical discourse on global responsibility.
