    Kurzfassung: This book explores the history of reggae in modern Britain from the time it emerged as a cultural force in the 1970s. As basslines from Jamaica reverberated across the Atlantic, so they were received and transmitted by the UK's Afro-Caribbean community. From roots to lovers' rock, from deejays harnessing the dancehall crowd to dub poets reporting back from the socio-economic front line, British reggae soundtracked the inner-city experience of black youth. In time, reggae's influence permeated the wider culture, informing the sounds and the language of popular music whilst also retaining a connection to the street-level sound systems, clubs and centres that provided space to create, protest and innovate. This book is therefore a testament to struggle and ingenuity, a collection of essays tracing reggae's importance to both the culture and the politics of late twentieth and early twenty-first century Britain

Brooks explores more than a century of music archives to examine the critics, collectors, and listeners who have determined perceptions of Black women on stage and in the recording studio.     Kurzfassung: DDR und Heavy Metal? Wolf-Georg Zaddach rückt eine in der Forschung lange Zeit vernachlässigte Jugendkultur in den Fokus und erläutert - erstmalig in diesem Umfang - die alltäglichen Praktiken und Entwicklungen der Heavy Metal-Szene im DDR-Sozialismus der 1980er-Jahre. Die empirische Grundlage hierfür bieten bisher unveröffentlichte Quellen wie Songtexte auf Karteikarten, Fan-Briefe und Akten der »Stasi« (Ministerium für Staatssicherheit). Es kommen aber auch zahlreiche Zeitzeugen wie die Macher der Kultradiosendung »Tendenz Hard bis Heavy« sowie diverse Fans und Musiker zu Wort.

    Kurzfassung: Plague, a devastating and recurring affliction throughout the Renaissance, had a major impact on European life. Not only was pestilence a biological problem, but it was also read as a symptom of spiritual degeneracy and it caused widespread social disorder. Assembling a picture of the complex and sometimes contradictory responses to plague from medical, spiritual and civic perspectives, this book uncovers the place of music - whether regarded as an indispensable medicine or a moral poison that exacerbated outbreaks - in the management of the disease. This original musicological approach further reveals how composers responded, in their works, to the discourses and practices surrounding one of the greatest medical crises in the pre-modern age. Addressing topics such as music as therapy, public rituals and performance and music in religion, the volume also provides detailed musical analysis throughout to illustrate how pestilence affected societal attitudes toward music

Hübel den Protagonisten der damaligen Avantgarde-Bewegungen und widmet sich dabei insbesondere der vielschichtigen Beziehung, die die Künstler mit der seinerzeit äußerst populären Jazzmusik eingingen. Der interdisziplinär angelegte Essay ist gleichermaßen ein Stück Medien- wie auch Zeitgeschichte
    Kurzfassung: »One must be absolutely modern!« - this premise hung like a guiding star above numerous avant-garde movements of the 1910s and '20s. From the salon to the street, from esoteric milieux into life, preferably the night-life: as border-crossers between cultural lifeworlds, in a casual suit and with a tightly clamped monocle, the new artist type headed out to proletarian boxing fights or to popular variety shows. He played in a jazz band, collected records, danced the foxtrot and the Charleston, and raised as such not just the claim of the artistic principle, but he also knew how to cleverly use proven PR strategies from the entertainment industry for his own purposes. Anke J. Hübel goes looking for traces of this amongst the protagonists of the avant-garde movements of the time, and in doing so, focuses in particular on the multilayered relationship which the artists had with the extremely popular jazz music of the time. This interdisciplinary essay is equal parts a work of media history, and of modern history more broadly

    Kurzfassung: In einer 1908 erschienenen "Kampfschrift gegen die Geräusche unseres Lebens" ereiferte sich der Kulturphilosoph Theodor Lessing über das "Getobe unermesslich anschwellender Riesenstädte, in denen "einer auf des anderen Nervenklaviatur" spiele. Als große Lärmbelästigung empfand er vor allem die Musik: So mokierte Lessing sich über die "grauenhafte Unsitte" der Biermusiken und Promenadenkonzerte oder die "Tyrannei" des Klavierspiels bei geöffnetem Fenster. Derlei Beschwerden sind indes nur die Gegenseite einer sich seit dem frühen 19. Jahrhundert umfassend ausbreitenden urbanen populären Musikkultur, die dieser Band aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven in den Blick nimmt.

    Kurzfassung: Noisy, confrontational, and controversial, industrial music first emerged in the mid-1970s around bands and performance groups who combined avant-garde electronic music with the provocative attitude and style of punk rock. In its early days, bands such as Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire produced a genuinely radical form of music bent on recontextualizing the signs and methods of cultural authority in an attempt to liberate listeners from the trappings of modernity. But, as industrial music took on more and more elements of popular music over the course of the 1980s it slowly abandoned its mission. By the mid-1990s, it was seen as simply another style of pop music, and had ironically fallen into the trappings it sought by its very existence to destroy. In "Assimilate", S. Alexander Reed provides the first ever critical history of this fascinating and enigmatic genre tracing industrial music's trajectory from Throbbing Gristle's founding of the record label Industrial Music in 1976, to its peak in popularity on the back of the band Nine Inch Nails in the mid-1990s, and through its decline to the present day. Through a series of revealing explorations of works spanning the entirety of industrial music's past, and drawing on extensive interviews with musicians, record label owners, DJs, and concert promoters, Reed paints a thorough historical picture that includes not only the bands, but the structures that supported them, and the scenes they created. In so doing, he reveals an engaging story of an ideological disintegration and its aftermath. The definitive text on the genre, "Assimilate" is essential reading for fans of industrial music, and scholars and students of popular music alike.

    Kurzfassung: Die Bedeutung von Tradition in den Alltagskulturen der Gegenwart unterliegt einem markanten Wandel. Unter dem Einfluss von Globalisierungsprozessen und dem Innovationsdruck der modernen Popkultur sinken die kulturellen Zugangsschwellen zu traditionalen Phänomenen. Tradition wird fluide und erfährt so eine Revitalisierung in den unterschiedlichsten populärkulturellen Medien.Am Beispiel der zentralen europäischen Traditionsfigur des Teufels zeichnet diese Studie den fundamentalen Wandel nach, den Satan, Mephisto, Luzifer durch den Transfer in das popkulturelle Medium Rockmusik vollzogen hat. Auf der methodischen Grundlage einer Analyse popularer Medientexte entwickelt sich so eine spannende und materialreiche Geschichte des Diabolischen in der Rockmusik von den „Teufelspakten“ des Delta Blues über das Spiel mit populärer Religiosität der Beatles bis zu den satanistischen Black-Metal-Szenen der modernen Heavy-Metal-Kultur. Dabei wird deutlich, wie sehr der Rekurs auf den Teufel stets von zeit- und gruppenspezifischen kulturellen Bedürfnissen gelenkt wird. Das Traditionale bleibt stets auch das Aktuelle. Es bildet eine wichtige Zukunftsoption innerhalb der reflexiven Moderne.

Heute stellt HipHop eine vielseitige Arena der Popkultur dar - ein Medium kultureller Artikulation im jugendlichen Alltag, aber auch ein Produkt der Kulturindustrie und ein »Diskursuniversum« mit typischen Ausdrucksformen in Sprache, Bild und Bewegung. Mit diesem Band liegt die erste umfangreiche Textsammlung über HipHop im deutschsprachigen Raum vor. Beiträge aus Cultural Studies, Ethnologie, Soziolinguistik, Pädagogik und anderen Disziplinen werden mit Essays von Szene-Autoren zusammengeführt. Allen gemeinsam ist das Verständnis von HipHop als Raum kultureller Praxis mit »globalen« Konturen und »lokalen« Aneignungsformen. Das Rahmenthema wird ausdifferenziert in ein Mosaik aus Themen und Theorieperspektiven, u.a. Breakdance und Sozialisation von Migrantenjugendlichen, Sampling und kulturelles Gedächtnis, französischer Rap und politischer Diskurs.     Kurzfassung: Building on their studies of sixties culture and theory of cognitive praxis, Ron Eyerman and Andrew Jamison examine the mobilization of cultural traditions and formulation of new collective identities through the music of activism. They combine a sophisticated theoretical argument with historical-empirical studies of nineteenth-century populists and twentieth-century labour and ethnic movements, focusing on the interrelations between music and social movements in the United States and the transfer of those experiences to Europe. Specific chapters examine folk and country music, black music, music of the 1960s movements, and music of the Swedish progressive movement.
