    Abstract: "Thousands of intact ceramic bowls and plates as well as fragments made in the medieval Byzantine empire survive to this day. Decorated with figural and non-figural imagery applied in a variety of techniques and adorned with colourful paints and glazes, the vessels can tell us much about those who owned them and those who looked at them. In addition to innumerable ceramic vessels, a handful of precious metal bowls and plates survive from the period. Together, these objects make up the art of dining in medieval Byzantium. This art of dining was effervescent, at turns irreverent and deadly serious, visually stunning and fun. It is suggestive of ways in which those viewing the objects used a quotidian and biologically necessary (f)act - that of eating - to reflect on their lives and deaths, their aspirations and their realities. This book examines the ceramic and metal vessels in terms of the information offered on the foods eaten, the foods desired and their status; the spectacle of the banquet; the relationship between word and image in medieval Byzantium; the dangers of taste; the emergence of new moral and social ideals; and the use of dining as a tool in constructing and enforcing hierarchy. This book is of appeal to scholarly and non-scholarly audiences interested in the art and material culture of the medieval period and in the social history of food and eating"--

    Abstract: This volume presents an overview of methodologies to identify and study foodways in the archaeological record. It also includes definitions, information, and examples for students and professionals to understand the basic analytical approaches, methods, and themes critical to archaeological studies of foodways. One of the main goals of this book is to show that foodways can help us better understand many aspects of a culture and can be studied from the material culture recovered from archaeological sites. It is important to stress that foodways are, and should be, studied by more than zooarchaeologists and paleoethnobotanists. Foodways encompass the biological and cultural need for sustenance, and thus are a research area that incorporates a multitude of artifact types, analytical specialties, and research questions. Foodways are a tangled web of ideas and behaviors that structure diet, subsistence strategies, cuisines, and the use of food to express identity. While foodstuffs are primary components to foodways, the consumption of material foods is inherently social. Food, dishes, and cuisines are expressions of the people, culture, and time in which they are created.     Abstract: "For centuries Jewish shtetls were an active part of Belarusian life; today, they are gone. The Belarusian Shtetl is a landmark volume which offers, for the first time in English, an illuminating look at the shtetls' histories, the lives lived and lost in them, and the memories, records, and physical traces of these communities that remain today. Since 2012, under the auspices of the Sefer Center for University Teaching of Jewish Civilization, teams of scholars and students from many different disciplines have returned to the sites of former Jewish shtetls in Belarus to reconstruct their past. These researchers have interviewed a wide range of both Jews and non-Jews to find and document traces of Shtetl history, to gain insights into community memories, and to discover surviving markers of identity and ethnic affiliation. In the process, they have also unearthed evidence from old cemeteries and prewar houses and the stories behind memorials erected for Holocaust victims. Drawing on the wealth of information these researchers have gathered, The Belarusian Shtetl creates compelling and richly textured portraits of the histories and everyday lives of each shtetl. Important for scholars and accessible to the public, these portraits set out to return the Jewish shtetls to their rightful places of prominence in the histories and legacies of Belarus."

    Abstract: This book uses sociological perspectives to bring together work on war and identity in the Middle Ages relating to a range of peoples and geographical settings from Europe, the eastern Mediterranean, the Middle East, and Asia. Focusing on the interrelation between ideological practices and group formation, it examines the role of warfare in the emergence and decline of particular social structures, and changing patterns of collective identification. It contributes to the debate on the longue durée development of the phenomena of ethnicity and nationhood by drawing attention to the impact of war on the evolution of various types of polity and visions of community in the Middle Ages. Its use of non-European as well as European exemplars provides a wealth of fruitful comparative material, shedding new light on the relationship between medieval warfare and high-level identities.

    Abstract: Das vorliegende Buch beschreibt das Schicksal polnischer Juden im besetzten Deutschland der Jahre 1945–1948. Untersucht wird vor allem ihr Verhältnis zu den einheimischen Deutschen, den Besatzungsmächten, den polnischen DPs sowie den Vertretern von Hilfsorganisationen in den DP-Lagern. Es ergibt sich das Bild einer Gemeinschaft, die ihre Wurzeln in der jüdischen Bevölkerung im Polen der Vorkriegszeit hat. Zugleich verkörpern diese Menschen eine neue Identität: die der Scher’it Hapleitah – der Überlebenden der Shoah. Aus den „polnischen Juden“ wurden in den Nachkriegsjahren Juden aus Polen, und schließlich schlichtweg Juden, die ihr Leben außerhalb ihres Herkunftslandes aufbauen wollten. Die Erfahrung der Shoah und der Glaube an eine Zukunft in Palästina hielten diese Gemeinschaft zusammen.
    Abstract: This book discusses the fate of Polish Jews in postwar Germany 1945–1948, focusing primarily on their relations with their surroundings: local German population, the occupying administration, Polish DPs, and representatives of the aid agencies in the DP camps. The book looks at a community, which to a large degree remained a continuation of the Jewish community in Poland. Its members were still part of the pre-war and wartime networks, while becoming a new entity: a group creating a new identity, that of Sh'erit ha-Pletah: the survivors of the Holocaust. During the years they spent in Germany Polish Jews became Jews from Poland and finally simply Jews building their lives outside their country of origin. This community was unified by the shared experience of the Holocaust and the belief in the future in Palestine.
    Abstract: Monografia opisuje los polskich Żydów w powojennych Niemczech w latach 1945–1948, koncentrując się przede wszystkim na ich relacji z otoczeniem: miejscową społecznością niemiecką, administracją i żołnierzami wojsk okupacyjnych, polskimi dipisami i przedstawicielami zarządzających obozami organizacji pomocowych. Z badań przedstawionych w książce wyłania się obraz społeczności, która była kontynuacją przedwojennej żydowskiej społeczności w Polsce, ale jednocześnie stawała się czymś zupełnie nowym – grupą budującą nową tożsamość, tożsamość Szerit hapleta – ocalałych z Zagłady. W czasie kilkuletniego pobytu w Niemczech polscy Żydzi stali się Żydami z Polski i wreszcie po prostu Żydami, budującymi życie poza krajem urodzenia. Spoiwem tej społeczności było doświadczenie Zagłady i wiara w przyszłość narodu w Palestynie.

    Abstract: "Catherine Horel has undertaken a comparative analysis of the societal, ethnic, and cultural diversity in the last decades of the Habsburg Monarchy as represented in twelve cities: Arad, Bratislava, Brno, Chernivtsi, Lviv, Oradea, Rijeka, Sarajevo, Subotica, Timișoara, Trieste, and Zagreb. By purposely selecting these cities, the author aims to counter the disproportionate attention that the largest cities in the empire receive. With a focus on the aspects of everyday life faced by the city inhabitants (associations, schools, economy, and municipal politics) the book avoids any idealization of the monarchy as a paradise of peaceful multiculturalism, and also avoids exaggerating conflicts. The author claims that the world of the Habsburg cities was a dynamic space where many models coexisted and created vitality, emulation, and conflict. Modernization brought about the dissolution of old structures, but also mobility, the progress of education, the explosion of associative life, and constantly growing cultural offerings"--

    Abstract: Starting in the nineteenth century in Germany, colourful military uniforms became a locus for various queer male fantasies, fostering an underground sexual economy of male prostitution as well as a political project to exploit the army's prestige for queer emancipation. In the first decade of the twentieth century, however, a series of scandals derailed this emancipatory project. Simultaneously, public debates began to invoke homosexuality, sadism, transvestism, and other sexological concepts to criticize military policies and practices. In pursuing the threads with which queer authors and activists stitched their fantasies about uniforms, Jeffrey Schneider offers fresh perspectives on key debates over military secrecy, disciplinary abuses in the army, and German militarism. Drawing on a vast trove of materials ranging from sexological case studies, trial transcripts, and parliamentary debates to queer activist tracts, autobiographies, and literary texts, Uniform Fantasies uncovers a particularly modern set of concerns about such topics as outing closeted homosexuals, the presence of gay men in the military, and whether men in uniform are more masculine or more insecure about their sexual identity.

    Abstract: Eine Besonderheit der spanischen Kolonialherrschaft ist das explizite Verbot für »Ausländer«, nach Amerika zu reisen oder sich dort anzusiedeln. Dennoch lebten viele Immigranten englischer, portugiesischer, italienischer oder französischer Herkunft in den hispano-amerikanischen Kolonien. Diese »extranjeros«, deren Ausweisung zwar oft angeordnet, aber selten praktiziert wurde, stehen im Zentrum der Studie. Martin Biersack geht dem widersprüchlichen und oft spannungsreichen Verhältnis von »Spaniern« und »Ausländern«, Norm und Praxis, Duldung und Ausweisung nach und kann so erklären, wie und warum die Integration nichtspanischer Immigranten in die vormoderne koloniale Gesellschaft gelang, obwohl sie formal von dieser ausgeschlossen waren.

    Abstract: 'Heimat' gilt gemeinhin als bürgerlich-konservativ. Doch auch die Sozialdemokratie bezog sich positiv auf den Begriff. Ihr Begriffsverständnis changierte zwischen einem universalistischen Zukunftsversprechen und einer herkunftsbezogenen Orientierung an Region und Nation. Die Studie untersucht sozialistische Heimat-Konzepte im späten Kaiserreich und in der Weimarer Republik erstmals systematisch. Sie leistet so nicht nur einen innovativen Beitrag zur Labour History, sondern trägt wesentlich zu einer geschichtswissenschaftlichen Neubewertung des gesamtgesellschaftlichen Heimat-Diskurses im Untersuchungszeitraum bei

    Abstract: This Element details how elites provide policy concessions when they face credible threats of revolution. Specifically, the authors discuss how the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917 and the subsequent formation of Comintern enhanced elites' perceptions of revolutionary threat by affecting the capacity and motivation of labor movements as well as the elites' interpretation of information signals. These developments incentivized elites to provide policy concessions to urban workers, notably reduced working hours and expanded social transfer programs. The authors assess their argument by using original qualitative and quantitative data. First, they document changes in perceptions of revolutionary threat and strategic policy concessions in early inter-war Norway by using archival and other sources. Second, they code, for example, representatives at the 1919 Comintern meeting to proxy for credibility of domestic revolutionary threat in cross-national analysis. States facing greater threats expanded various social policies to a larger extent than other countries, and some of these differences persisted for decades

    Abstract: "Colonialism and the Jews in German History brings together new and path-breaking studies on the historical relationship between colonialism and the Jews in Germany. The book considers the mutual influences on the situation of the Jews in Germany, including attitudes towards Jews and anti-Semitism but also Jewish self-conceptions, and the ideology and politics of German colonialism. The contributors discuss the ways in which colonial ideology and practice have affected the position of the Jews in Germany, and the relationship between anti-Semitism and colonial racism. In doing so, the volume introduces German colonialism as a relevant context for German-Jewish history, and it expands the perspective on German colonial history significantly by considering Jews both as distinct objects and also as agents within the field of German colonialism. The volume includes studies on the pre-colonial era, the phase of active German colonialism since the 1880s, and the time after Germany lost its colonies in the First World War. All these studies testify to the fact that German-Jewish history takes on additional significance if seen as part of a global history of collective relationships."--

    Abstract: This book investigates approaches to community heritage within the Arab region and the underlying theories associated with these approaches. It aims, within the context of the region, to define ‘community’ and ‘heritage’, as well as examine the emergence and development of this field. The volume’s contributors deploy a wealth of case studies from the Middle East and North Africa to provide a unique forum for discussion, comparability, analysis and deeper understandings of current trends in community heritage. In particular, the volume explores the relationship between communities and their heritage, the meanings and values placed upon it, the nature and degree of community participation and engagement in its interpretation and management, and how its different registers affect and produce sometimes unexpected community heritage formations.     Abstract: One of the greatest benefits of studying the ancient Greek and Roman past is the ability to utilise different forms of evidence, in particular both written and archaeological sources. The contributors to this volume employ this evidence to examine ancient housing, and what might be learned of identities, families, and societies, but they also use it as a methodological locus from which to interrogate the complex relationship between different types of sources. Chapters range from the recreation of the house as it was conceived in Homeric poetry, to the decipherment of a painted Greek lekythos to build up a picture of household activities, to the conjuring of the sensorial experience of a house in Pompeii. Together, they present a rich tapestry which demonstrates what can be gained for our understanding of ancient housing from examining the interplay between the words of ancient texts and the walls of archaeological evidence
