    Abstract: Knowledge and Discourse presents an ecological approach to the study of discourse in social, academic and professional practices. The chapters collectively illustrate the ecological approach by exploring how language makes connections between subjective experiences as people construct meaning and action. Zudem findet das aktuelle Geschehen häufig nur deshalb statt, weil die Akteure erwarten, dass die Medien darüber berichten. Das Verhältnis zwischen dem aktuellen Geschehen, der Medienberichterstattung und ihren Folgen ist deshalb komplexer als die Medienwirkungsforschung vermuten lässt.     Abstract: Sex Scene suggests that what we have come to understand as the sexual revolution of the late 1960s and early 1970s was actually a media revolution. In lively essays, the contributors examine a range of mass media-film and television, recorded sound, and publishing-that provide evidence of the circulation of sex in the public sphere, from the mainstream to the fringe. They discuss art films such as I am Curious (Yellow), mainstream movies including Midnight Cowboy, sexploitation films such as Mantis in Lace, the emergence of erotic film festivals and of gay pornography, the use of multimedia in sex education, and the sexual innuendo of The Love Boat. Scholars of cultural studies, history, and media studies, the contributors bring shared concerns to their diverse topics. They highlight the increasingly fluid divide between public and private, the rise of consumer and therapeutic cultures, and the relationship between identity politics and individual rights. The provocative surveys and case studies in this nuanced cultural history reframe the "sexual revolution" as the mass sexualization of our mediated world.Contributors. Visual media has dominated cultural studies, affording an incomplete record of the modern era. This edited volume presents an original analysis of the role of sound in Latin American and Caribbean societies, from the late nineteenth century to the present. The contributors examine the importance of sound in the purveyance of power, gender roles, race, community, religion, and populism.     Abstract: This book provides the first comprehensive account of trauma as a critical concept in the study of modern visual media, from Freud to the present day, explaining how contemporary trauma studies emerged from research on Holocaust representation in which the audiovisual testimony of survivors was posed as an authentic alternative to popular television and film dramatizations. It argues that the media coverage of 9/11 and the subsequent 'war on terror,' however, has revealed how the formation of communities of witness and commemoration around 'traumatic events' can perpetuate violence and inequality. The book explains how Benjamin, Adorno and Barthes, drawing from psychoanalysis, analyzed the roles of fantasy, ideology and collective identification in mass media, and began to understand trauma as an authentic experience of modernity. It proposes that the insights of these earlier theorists, along with more recent arguments by Derrida, Agamben and Zizek, continue to provide important perspectives on today's politics of mediated shock and terror.

    Abstract: Soziale Konstrukte wie (europäische) Öffentlichkeiten entstehen nicht allein durch die Generierung und massenmediale Vermittlung politischer Inhalte, sondern letztlich in den kommunikativen Praktiken und Anschlusshandlungen der Menschen auf der Publikumsebene. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, die Rolle des Publikums bei der Herstellung europäischer Öffentlichkeit theoretisch und empirisch herauszuarbeiten. Es wird ein pragmatischer Theorieansatz entwickelt, demzufolge die Menschen auf der Basis ihrer Medienrezeptionen Betroffenheit von EU-politischen Entscheidungen und Problemlagen wahrnehmen und in entsprechende Diskurse eintreten. Durch die diskursive Aneignung und Lokalisierung des Rezipierten in ihren jeweiligen politischen, kulturellen und sozialen Kontexten werden die Mediennutzer von Mitgliedern eines Medienpublikums zu denen eines Öffentlichkeit konstituierenden Bürgerpublikums. Empirisch untersucht werden die Aneignungs- und Sinngebungsprozesse durch das Publikum sodann im Rahmen qualitativer Fallstudien am Beispiel der EU-Verfassungsdebatte in Frankreich, Italien und Deutschland.

    Abstract: When reporters asked about the Bush administration's timing in making their case for the Iraq war, then Chief of Staff Andrew Card responded that "from an marketing point of view, you don't introduce new products in August." While surprising only in its candor, this statement signified the extent to which consumer culture has pervaded every aspect of life. For those troubled by the long reach of the marketplace, resistance can seem futile. However, a new generation of progressive activists has begun to combat the media supremacy of multinational corporations by using the very tools and techniques employed by their adversaries. In OurSpace, Christine Harold examines the deployment and limitations of "culture jamming" by activists. These techniques defy repressive corporate culture through parodies, hoaxes, and pranks. Among the examples of sabotage she analyzes are the magazine Adbusters' spoofs of familiar ads and the Yes Men's impersonations of company spokespersons. While these strategies are appealing, Harold argues that they are severely limited in their ability to challenge capitalism. Indeed, many of these tactics have already been appropriated by corporate marketers to create an aura of authenticity and to sell even more products. For Harold, it is a different type of opposition that offers a genuine alternative to corporate consumerism.
