    Abstract: Spätestens mit den Debatten zu einer zunehmenden Polarisierung der deutschen und anderer europäischer Gesellschaften rückt die Frage nach Prozessen der Radikalisierung in den Blick. Neben individuellen Radikalisierungen sind es vor allem gesellschaftliche Rahmenbedingungen, die für die Radikalisierung, manchmal sogar ganzer Gruppen, verantwortlich zeichnen. Im vorliegenden Buch werden unter Einbezug unterschiedlicher Perspektiven Prozesse der Radikalisierung und damit verbundenen Co-Radikalisierung auf rechtsextremer und muslimischer Seite untersucht und diskutiert.     Abstract: Dieses Open-Access-Buch behandelt die Frage, wie und warum es dazu kommt, dass Menschen schwere islamistische Gewalttaten, etwa in Form terroristischer Anschläge oder gewaltsamer Hasskriminalität, in Westeuropa begehen wollen. Das im Rahmen des Buches entwickelte Erklärungsmodell nähert sich der Beantwortung dieser Frage in zwei Schritten: erstens wird erklärt, wie und warum Menschen überhaupt bereit werden, im Namen einer Ideologie zu töten. Die allermeisten Menschen, die sich hin zu einer solchen Gewaltbereitschaft radikalisieren, begehen allerdings keine Gewalttat. Daher wird zweitens dargelegt, unter welchen Bedingungen diese ideologiebasierte Gewaltbereitschaft in einer konkreten Gewalthandlung in Westeuropa gipfelt. Das entwickelte Erklärungsmodell wird im Anschluss empirisch überprüft. Der Fokus richtet sich dabei insbesondere auf die theoretisch formulierten Bedingungen der Tatbegehung. Diese Annahmen werden am Beispiel realisierter oder geplanter islamistischer Gewaltstraftaten in Westeuropa zwischen 2000-2013 getestet. Der Autor Marco-Thejesh Lohmann ist derzeit im Bereich der Islamismusprävention in Deutschland tätig. Er arbeitet in einem Präventionsprogramm, das darauf abzielt, der Radikalisierung junger Menschen möglichst frühzeitig entgegenzuwirken.

    Abstract: "How do religious, ethnic, and national identities interact in religiously homogenous ethnic conflicts? Is it possible for religion to act as a resolution tool in such conflicts? Why? Why not? In search for answers to these questions, Under the Banner of Islam focuses on the ambivalent role Sunni Islam has played in Turkey's Kurdish conflict-both as a conflict-resolution tool and as a tool of resistance-in the last two decades. Relying mainly on participant observation in Civil Friday Prayers and 62 interviews conducted in three different cities in Turkey (Istanbul and the majority-Kurdish Diyarbakir and Batman) between June 2012 and June 2013, it demonstrates that Sunni Islam has had a very limited impact as a conflict-resolution tool in Turkey. Blending interview data with a detailed historical institutional analysis that goes back as early as the nineteenth century, it argues that the strength of Turkish and Kurdish nationalisms, the symbiotic relationship between Turkey's religious and political fields, religious elites' varying conceptualizations of religious and ethnic identities, and the recent political developments in the region (particularly the establishment of an autonomous Kurdish region, Rojava, in Syria) have all contributed to this outcome. The resulting narrative is not only a record of religion, ethnicity, and nationalism in Turkey's Kurdish conflict, but also an investigation of how ethnic and religious identities are negotiated in conflict resolution and how symbolic boundaries are drawn in ethnic conflict zones"--

Der Autor Valerian Thielicke ist derzeit wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Lehrstuhl für Politische Theorie und Ideengeschichte am Institut für Politik- und Verwaltungswissenschaften der Universität Rostock.     Abstract: The author carves out the entanglements of jihadist ideology and warfare with geographical concepts at Africa’s periphery of the Islamic world: geographical knowledge about the boundary between the "Land of Islam" and the "Land of War"; the pre-colonial construction of "the Muslim" and "the unbeliever"; and the transfer of ideas between political elites and mobile actors (traders, pilgrims, slaves, soldiers), whose reports helped shape new definitions of the African frontier of Islam. Research for this book is based on the study of a very wide range of Arabic and West African (Hausa, Fulfulde) manuscripts. Their policies reveal the persistent reciprocity of jihadist warfare and territorial statehood, of Africa and the Middle East.

    Abstract: In 2014, the declaration of the Islamic State caliphate was hailed as a major victory by the global jihadist movement. But it was short-lived. Three years on, the caliphate was destroyed, leaving its surviving fighters - many of whom were foreign recruits - to retreat and scatter across the globe. So what happens now? Is this the beginning of the end of IS? Or can it adapt and regroup after the physical fall of the caliphate? In this timely analysis, terrorism expert Colin P. Clarke takes stock of IS - its roots, its evolution, and its monumental setbacks - to assess the road ahead. The caliphate, he argues, was an anomaly. The future of the global jihadist movement will look very much like its past – with peripatetic and divided groups of militants dispersing to new battlefields, from North Africa to Southeast Asia, where they will join existing civil wars, establish safe havens and sanctuaries, and seek ways of conducting spectacular attacks in the West that inspire new followers. In this fragmented and atomized form, Clarke cautions, IS could become even more dangerous and challenging for counterterrorism forces, as its splinter groups threaten renewed and heightened violence across the globe.

    Abstract: The 1998 attacks against US embassies in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam attest to al-Qaeda’s durable presence in Africa, yet Islamist-inspired radical organisations in the continent have gained much attention of late, the result of their campaigns of insurgent and terrorist violence directed against the state in Algeria, Somalia, Nigeria, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Uganda, Djibouti and Kenya. These groups include Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, Harakat Al Shabaab, Boko Haram, the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa, and Ansar Dine. This book explains why the Idea of Jihad is alive and well in sub-Saharan Africa, even after more than thirty years of Western and global efforts to curtail it, and how most important organisations are formed by the interaction between the often under-estimated local and global dynamics. Stig Jarle Hansen has been researching African radical violent Islamism for more than fifteen years and is well placed to explain how and why such groups emerged, whether they manifest any specific traits compared with other violent Islamists, and what is likely to be their impact beyond the African continent. He also discusses the response of African and Western governments to this phenomenon.

Ebenfalls wird die Bekämpfung der Terrorismusfinanzierung untersucht. Diese überarbeitete zweite Auflage konzentriert sich in den Kapiteln eins und zwei einerseits noch ausführlicher und intensiver auf die Analyse der Phänomenbereiche islamistischer Terrorismus, Islamismus und Salafismus. Andererseits werden in diesen beiden Kapiteln aktuelle islamistisch-terroristische Anschläge wie z.B. in Hamburg sowie Barcelona und Cambrils noch intensiver und umfassender auf den Ebenen Radikalisierungshintergründe und taktisches Vorgehen der Terroristen untersucht.     Abstract: Das Erstarken rechtspopulistischer Bewegungen führt zu einer Normverschiebung in europäischen Gesellschaften und erzeugt Spannungen, die sich in Polarisierung widerspiegeln. Es geht dabei weniger um Migration selbst als um die Prozesse, die stattfinden, wenn Migrant*innen und ihre Nachkommen ihre Rechte einfordern. Die Frage des Umgangs mit Migration wird so zur Chiffre für Anerkennung von Gleichheit in demokratischen Gesellschaften. Naika Foroutan zeigt, dass die Migrationsfrage zur neuen sozialen Frage geworden ist – an ihr werden Verteilungsgerechtigkeit und kulturelle Selbstbeschreibung ebenso wie die demokratische Verfasstheit verhandelt. »Wie hältst Du es mit der Migration?« steht für die Frage danach, was ausgehandelt werden muss, damit die plurale Demokratie zusammenhält.     Abstract: Since the elections of 2002, Erdogan's AKP has dominated the political scene in Turkey. This period has often been understood as a break from a 'secular' pattern of state-building. But in this book, Ceren Lord shows how Islamist mobilisation in Turkey has been facilitated from within the state by institutions established during early nation-building. Lord thus challenges the traditional account of Islamist AKP's rise that sees it either as a grassroots reaction to the authoritarian secularism of the state or as a function of the state's utilisation of religion. Tracing struggles within the state, Lord also shows how the state's principal religious authority, the Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) competed with other state institutions to pursue Islamisation. Through privileging Sunni Muslim access to state resources to the exclusion of others, the Diyanet has been a key actor ensuring persistence and increasing salience of religious markers in political and economic competition, creating an amenable environment for Islamist mobilisation.

Alle verbinden in unterschiedlicher Weise das Anliegen der Rückkehr zu den Quellen mit fortwährender Erneuerung der moralischen Ordnung des Gemeinwesens und individueller Ermahnung.
    Abstract: Die Aufschlüsselung der unterschiedlichen Deutungen von islāh liefert zugleich neue Erkenntnisse über Prozesse der Herstellung und Aushandlung gruppenübergreifender Zugehörigkeit und politischer Legitimität im Übergang von vorkolonialen zu kolonialen Formen der Staatlichkeit in Marokko.

    Abstract: 〈p〉What makes radical world views so attractive? And how can the revival of extremism be explained from the perspective of cultural and social studies? If major narratives were supposed to be found on the dump of history, they have lately found their way back into the discourse with the return of fundamentalism. This book assesses and explains the emergence since 2011 of Sunni jihadist organisations in Syria’s fledgling insurgency, charts their evolution and situates them within the global Islamist project. Unprecedented numbers of foreign fighters have joined such groups, who will almost certainly continue to host them. External factors are scrutinised, including the strategic and tactical lessons learned from other jihadist conflict zones, the complex interplay between Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State and how it has influenced the jihadist sphere in Syria.     Abstract: How do specific secular and religious ideologies - such as nationalism, neoliberalism, atheism, Pentecostalism, Tablighi Islam, and shamanism-gain popularity and when do they lose traction? To answer these questions, Mathijs Pelkmans critically examines the trajectories of a range of ideologies as they move into the post-Soviet frontier in Central Asia. Ethnographically rooted in the everyday life of a former mining town in southern Kyrgyzstan, Fragile Conviction shows how residents have dealt with the existential and epistemic crises that arose after the collapse of the Soviet Empire. Residents became enchanted by the truths of Muslim and Christian missionaries, embraced the teachings of neoliberal and nationalist ideologues, and were riveted by the visions of shamanic healers. But no matter how much enthusiasm and hope these ideas first engendered, the commitment to any of them rarely lasted very long.Pelkmans finds that there is an inverse relationship between the tenacity and the effervescence of collective ideas, between their strength to persist and their ability to trigger committed action. Introducing the concept of pulsation, he argues in Fragile Conviction that ideational power must be understood in relation to three aspects: the voicing of the idea, its tension with everyday reality, and its reverberation within groups of listeners. The conclusion that the power of conviction is rooted in the instability of sociocultural contexts is a message that has relevance far beyond urban Central Asia.

Challenging common views of Islam as hostile to critical thinking, Ahmad delineates thriving traditions of critique in Islamic culture, focusing in large part on South Asian traditions. Ahmad contemplates and interrogates Greek and Enlightenment notions of reason and critique, and he notes how they are invoked in relation to "others," including Muslims. Drafting an alternative genealogy of critique in Islam, Ahmad reads religious teachings and texts, drawing on sources in Hindi, Urdu, Farsi, and English, and demonstrates how they serve as expressions of critique. Throughout, he depicts Islam as an agent, not an object, of critique."--

    Abstract: Jennifer Klöckner untersucht Dienstleistungen von Verbänden der freien Wohlfahrtspflege und von türkisch-islamischen Vereinen sowie die Motive ihrer freiwilligen MitarbeiterInnen. Mit Hilfe von Expertengesprächen von Verbandsvertretern sowie einer standardisierten Befragung von freiwilligen und hauptamtlichen MitarbeiterInnen analysiert die Autorin Beweggründe der Akteure. Der interdisziplinäre theoretische Ansatz der Studie integriert sozialpsychologische Ansätze im Rahmen der Motiverforschung, soziologische Theorien zur Erklärung des Einflusses individueller soziodemographischer Eigenschaften der Freiwilligen und ihres Netzwerks auf die Motive und freiwillige Arbeit in verschiedenen Organisationen sowie ökonomische Theorien zur Erklärung des Einflusses von Anreizen der Organisationen auf die Motive freiwilliger Arbeit.     Abstract: This volume focuses on interpreting the changing domestic and regional dynamics in the Arab world and Iran. Its chapters discuss an array of countries, events, actors, and issues - from an examination of the Arab Spring and the Tunisian democratic transition, to an exploration of the role of Saudi-Iranian geostrategic rivalry, to the impact of ethnic and sectarian politics in Syria, Iraq, and across the region. Chapters from expert contributors are organized into three parts. The first section of the volume covers the aspects and dynamics of change in the Arab world. The second examines the role of Islam, Islamism, Islamic governance, and sectarian and ethnic politics in the region. The third section focuses on Iranian domestic and regional politics.     Abstract: Der "Islamische Staat" beruht auf zwei Pfeilern: auf seinem Territorium und auf einer digitalen Infrastruktur, mit der er hocheffizient organisiert wird. Abdel Bari Atwan, der das IS-Gebiet bereist und zahllose Interviews mit Jihadisten geführt hat, bietet in seinem Buch erstmals Einblicke in die digitalen Institutionen und Kommandostrukturen des IS und stellt dessen führende Köpfe vor. Viele Computerspiele faszinieren durch die Verbindung von mittelalterlichem Ambiente und Hightech. Genau hier liegt für viele Jihadisten auch die Faszination des IS, der eine "mittelalterliche" Ordnung mit Hilfe des Internets aufrechterhält. Das Steuersystem orientiert sich am Koran, wird aber digital organisiert. Das Finanzwesen beruht auf dem Zinsverbot, verwaltet aber den Staatshaushalt und die Einnahmen aus Ölexport, Antiquitätenhandel und Entführung mit elektronischen Krypto-Währungen. Das Bildungswesen sorgt für Koranlektüre, aber auch für digital kompetenten Nachwuchs - auch weiblichen. Der Propagandaapparat setzt auf die Inszenierung von Gewalt und beschäftigt dafür eine ganze Armee von Fotografen, Video-Filmern und Spiele-Entwicklern. Atwan beschreibt die Rolle des Darknet und erklärt, warum die Cyber-Jihadisten dem elektronischen "Counter-Jihad" immer eine Nasenlänge voraus sein werden. Sein alarmierender Bericht sollte allen zu denken geben, die den IS mit militärischen Mitteln besiegen wollen.

    Abstract: Employing a theoretical framework based on the concept of identity loss, this book seeks to understand why increased integration has stimulated greater radicalization among the Muslim populations in Western Europe. Through extensive field research in four European countries - the UK, the Netherlands, Germany and France - the authors investigate three key questions: 1) Why are 2nd and 3rd generations of Muslims in Europe more radical than their parents?; 2) Why does Europe experience more "home-grown terrorism" today than thirty or forty years ago?; 3) Why do some European countries feature more radical Muslim communities than others? The book reveals that these three puzzling questions can be solved when analyzing the loss of individuality if the face of integration and identification with European society. While Individualist and structural approaches fail to explain radicalization of Muslims in Europe, this study, by framing radicalization through coupling the public discourse with identity loss, provides a much needed insight into the process of radicalization. Explaining radicalization and gaining an understanding of the drivers of radicalization is crucial to prevent and mitigate intercultural alienation, to further develop immigration policies, redress integration failures as well as to avoid dangerous oversimplifications. This book contributes not only to understanding why greater integration is matched by increasing radicalization, but its insights also contribute to developing ideas about how radicalization can be prevented or overcome and integration policies can be enhanced. This book will be of much interest to students of terrorism and counter-terrorism, radical Islam, war and conflict studies, European politics, IR and security studies.

    Abstract: Rezension: Wer den Wind sät, wird Sturm ernten - Michael Lüders beschreibt die westlichen Interventionen im Nahen und Mittleren Osten seit der Kolonialzeit und erklärt, was sie mit der aktuellen politischen Situation zu tun haben. Sein neues Buch liest sich wie ein Polit-Thriller - nur leider beschreibt es die Realität. Eine Geschichte erscheint in unterschiedlichem Licht, je nachdem, wo man beginnt sie zu erzählen. Und wir sind vergesslich. Das iranische Verhältnis zum Westen versteht nur, wer den von CIA und MI6 eingefädelten Sturz des demokratischen Ministerpräsidenten Mossadegh im Jahr 1953 berücksichtigt. Ohne den Irakkrieg von 2003 und die westliche Politik gegenüber Assad in Syrien lässt sich der Erfolg des "Islamischen Staates" nicht begreifen. Wer wissen will, wie in der Region alles mit allem zusammenhängt, der greife zu diesem Schwarzbuch der westlichen Politik im Orient.
