    Abstract: This collection of essays explores the complex relations between Christians and Muslims at the dawn of the modern age. It begins by examining two seminal works by Nicholas of Cusa: De pace fidei, a dialogue seeking peace among world religions written after the conquest of Constantinople in 1453, and Cribratio Alkorani (1460-61), an attempt to confirm Gospel truths through a critical reading of the Qur'an. After considering Nicholas, his sources, and his context, the book explores a wider range of late medieval texts on Christian-Muslim relations-not only Christian writings about Islam but also Muslim responses to Christianity. The book's focus is historical, but it can also contribute to efforts at increasing Muslim-Christian understanding today

    Abstract: This volume illustrates both theoretically and empirically the differences between religious diversity and religious pluralism. It highlights how the factual situation of cultural and religious diversity may lead to individual, social and political choices of organized and recognized pluralism. In the process, both individual and collective identities are redefined, incessantly moving along the continuum that ranges from exclusion to inclusion. The book starts by first detailing general issues related to religious pluralism. It makes the case for keeping the empirical, the normative, the regulatory and the interactive dimensions of religious pluralism analytically distinct while recognizing that, in practice, they often overlap. It also underlines the importance of seeking connections between religious pluralism and other pluralisms. Next, the book explores how religious diversity can operate to contribute to legal pluralism and examines the different types of church-state relations: eradication, monopoly, oligopoly and pluralism. The second half of the book features case studies that provide a more specific look at the general issues, from ways to map and assess the religious diversity of a whole country to a comparison between Belgian-French views of religious and philosophical diversity, from religious pluralism in Italy to the shifting approach to ethnic and religious diversity in America, and from a sociological and historical perspective of religious plurality in Japan to an exploration of Brazilian religions, old and new. The transition from religious diversity to religious pluralism is one of the most important challenges that will reshape the role of religion in contemporary society. This book provides readers with insights that will help them better understand and interpret this unprecedented transition

    Abstract: "In recent years bitter controversies have erupted across Europe and the Middle East about women's veiling, and especially their wearing of the face-veil or niqab. Yet the deeper issues contained within these controversies--secularism versus religious belief, individual freedom versus social or family coercion, identity versus integration--are not new but are strikingly prefigured by earlier conflicts. This book examines the state-sponsored anti-veiling campaigns which swept across wide swathes of the Muslim world in the interwar period, especially in Turkey and the Balkans, Iran, Afghanistan and the Soviet republics of the Caucasus and Central Asia. It shows how veiling was officially discouraged and ridiculed as backward and, although it was rarely banned, veiling was politicized and turned into a rallying-point for a wider opposition. Asking a number of questions about this earlier anti-veiling discourse and the policies flowing from it, and the reactions which it provoked, the book illuminates and contextualizes contemporary debates about gender, Islam and modernism"--

    Abstract: This book traces the transformations of Soviet and post-Soviet Islam within the former collectivised villages in Central Asia, the Caucasus and Inner Russia. The authors provide rich evidence for the close interplay between Soviet kolkhoz administrations and the religious personnel of Islam on the local lore. They show how this connection prepared the ground for the emergence of alternative Muslim congregations in already the post-Stalinist Soviet Union — long before the phenomenon became broadly visible during the boom of public religious practice in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
    Abstract: The larger part of the Muslim population in the Soviet realm lived and continues to live in rural areas. Other than in many parts of the presentay world of Islam, alternative, selfsegregated, often antiestablishment Muslim congregations emerged outside the big urban agglomerations of the former USSR. Among other factors of this emergence can be mentioned: the mass resettlements operated from the 1940s to the 1970s towards cashcrop growing lowlands; the tight limitation on the drift from the land by the Soviet authorities; the relative autonomy enjoyed by rural production units endowed with specialised economic profiles; and the liberalisation of religious practice in the wake of de-Stalinisation. Eleven case studies trace the transformations of Soviet and post-Soviet Islam within the former collectivised villages in Central Asia, the Caucasus and Inner Russia. The authors provide rich evidence for the close inter­play between Soviet kolkhoz administrations and the religious personnel of Islam on the local lore.     Abstract: Die Säkularisierungsthese geht davon aus, dass Modernisierung in ihren unterschiedlichen Facetten zu einem Bedeutungsverlust von Religion und Kirche in der Gegenwart führt.     Abstract: As the European public sphere becomes increasingly shaped by debates surrounding Islam, this book asks whether it is possible to rethink the public sphere, conceiving of it not as a site of consensus, but as one of antagonism and confrontation. With rich case studies drawn from various sites across Europe, such as France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK, Islam and Public Controversy in Europe examines a range of public controversies, including mosque construction, ritual slaughter, Sharia councils, burqa bans and love and marriage, to address the question of how cases of 'Islamic difference' might be addressed outside the confines of established normative discourses, which focus on freedom of religion, minority rights or multiculturalism. Acknowledging the creative role of dissent, this book explores the manner in which public controversies shed new light on understandings of aesthetics, animal rights, freedom of speech, the uniformity of secular law and modes of individual emancipation.Developing an innovative conceptual framework and elaborating the notion of controversy as a methodological tool, Islam and Public Controversy in Europe draws our attention to the processes of interaction, confrontation and mutual transformation, thereby opening up a new horizon for rethinking difference and pluralism in Europe. As such, it will appeal to scholars across the social sciences with interests in religion, integration, cultural difference and the public sphere. There were many natural philosophers who actually crossed the border between the two worlds, and, inside each of these worlds, there was a vast spectrum of doctrines, arguments and intellectual practices. The expression mechanical philosophy is burdened with ambiguities. It may refer to at least three different enterprises: a description of nature in mathematical terms; the comparison of natural phenomena to existing or imaginary machines; the use in natural philosophy of mechanical analogies, i.e. analogies conceived in terms of matter and motion alone.However mechanical philosophy is defined, its ambition was greater than its real successes. There were few mathematisations of phenomena. The machines of mechanical philosophers were not only imaginary, but had little to do with the machines of mecanicians.     Abstract: Religion is back again in Europe after never having been gone. It is manifest in the revival of religious institutions and traditions in former communist countries, in political controversies about the relationship between the church(es) and the state and about the freedom of religion and the freedom to criticize religion, and in public unease about religious minorities. This book is about religion and civil society in Europe. It moves from general theoretical and normative approaches of this relationship, via the examination of national patterns of religion-state relations, to in-depth analyses of the impact of religion and secularization on the values, pro-social attitudes and civic engagement of individuals. It covers Europe from the Lutheran North to the Catholic South, and from the secularized West to the Orthodox East and Islamic South-East with comparative analyses and country studies, concluding with an overall Europe-USA comparison.
