    Abstract: In People's Diplomacy, Kazushi Minami shows how the American and Chinese people rebuilt US-China relations in the 1970s, a pivotal decade bookended by Richard Nixon's 1972 visit to China and 1979 normalization of diplomatic relations. Top policymakers in Washington and Beijing drew the blueprint for the new bilateral relationship, but the work of building it was left to a host of Americans and Chinese from all walks of life, who engaged in "people-to-people" exchanges. After two decades of estrangement and hostility caused by the Cold War, these people dramatically changed the nature of US-China relations. Americans reimagined China as a country of opportunities, irresistible because of its prodigious potential, while Chinese reinterpreted the United States as an agent of modernization, capable of enriching their country and rejuvenating their lives.     Abstract: This book examines how the COVID-19 pandemic has engendered a new and challenging environment in which borders drawn around people, places, and social structures have hardened and new ones have emerged. Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, borders closed or became unwelcoming at the international, national, sub-national, and local levels. Debate persists as to whether those countries and territories that tightly managed their borders, like New Zealand, Australia, or Hong Kong, got it ‘right’ compared to those that did not. Without doubt, a majority of those who suffered and died throughout the pandemic have been those from vulnerable populations. Yet on the other hand, efforts taken to manage the spread of the disease, such as through border management, have also disproportionately affected those who are most vulnerable. How then is the right balance to be struck, acknowledging, too, the economic and other imperatives that may dissuade governments from taking public health steps? This book considers how international organizations, countries, and institutions within those countries should conceive of, and manage, borders as the world continues to struggle with COVID-19 and prepares for the next pandemic. Engaging a range of international, and sub-national, examples, the book thematizes the main issues at stake in the control and management of borders in the interests of public health.     Abstract: This open access book examines places on the margins and the dynamics through which a marginal position of a place is created. Specifically, it explores how places, mostly in sparsely populated areas, often perceived as immobile and frozen in time, come into being and develop through interference of everyday mobilities and creative practices that cut across the spheres of culture and nature as usually defined. Through fieldwork and case studies from areas in Iceland, Finland, Greenland, and Scotland, the book’s twelve chapters draw out the multiple relations through which places emerge, where people compose their lives as best they can with their surroundings. A special concern is to explore the links between travelling, landscape, and material culture and how places and margins are enacted through mobilities and creative practices of humans and other beings. The emphasis on mobility disturbs the perception of a place as a bounded entity and offers a useful and necessary understanding of places as mobile and fluid.     Abstract: In 2015 many camps were opened to accommodate newly arriving migrants in Berlin. Christian Sowa studies this form of accommodation. Moving beyond an exclusive focus on borders and migration, he argues that camp accommodation must be thought of and studied as part of the urban context and as a specific form of housing. The study provides an in-depth case study, discusses policy alternatives, argues for »housing for all instead of camps«, and contributes to bringing urban and migration studies into public discussion.     Abstract: Racism is once again an issue in Germany. Few studies have addressed the changing manifestations of racism in West Germany and in post-1990 Germany. The essays in this collection trace an arc of continuity from post-1945 völkisch ideology to the beginnings of right-wing terrorism, to the consequences of legislation concerning foreigners, and to issues of identity politics.
    Abstract: Rassismus ist ein vieldiskutiertes Gegenwartsthema – doch die spezifisch deutschen Aspekte und Brüche in der jüngeren Geschichte des Phänomens sind noch kaum erforscht. Nach einer ausführlichen Skizze und Analyse der westdeutschen Rassismushistorie durch den Herausgeber nimmt der Band in chronologischer Gliederung exemplarische Facetten in den Blick. Die Beiträge schlagen einen Bogen von den Kontinuitäten völkischen Denkens nach 1945 und den Anfängen des Rechtsterrorismus hin zu den Fragestellungen, die das frühe 21. Jahrhundert betreffen. Analysiert werden u. a. das sich verändernde linke wie rechte Rassismus-Verständnis nach 1968, die Aporien der frühen Rassismus-Forschung und des Multikulturalismus, sowie die Ära der "völkischen Ekstase" nach der Wiedervereinigung. Brennende Asylbewerberunterkünfte und die NSU-Mordserie zeigten, wie virulent der Rassismus in Deutschland noch ist, der in den identitätspolitischen Debatten jüngst unter neuen Vorzeichen thematisiert wird.

    Abstract: This book analyzes the coloniality of the concept of taste that gastronomy constructed and normalized as modern. It shows how gastronomy's engagement with rationalist and aesthetic thought, and with colonial and capitalist structures, led to the desensualization, bureaucratization and racialization of its conceptualization of taste. The Coloniality of Modern Taste provides an understanding of gastronomy that moves away from the usual celebratory approach. Through a discussion of nineteenth-century gastronomic publications, this book illustrates how the gastronomic notion of taste was shaped by a number of specifically modern constraints. It compares the gastronomic approach to taste to conceptualizations of taste that emerged in other geographical and philosophical contexts to illustrate that the gastronomic approach stands out as particularly bereft of affect. The book argues that the understanding of taste constructed by gastronomic texts continues to burden the affective experience of taste, while encouraging patterns of food consumption that rely on an exploitative and unsustainable global food system.     Abstract: Diese Dissertation nutzt die Heterogenität der Geschlechterrolleneinstellungen in der deutschen Bevölkerung, um zu untersuchen, ob individuelle Geschlechterrolleneinstellungen den allmählichen Bedeutungsverlust der Ehe erklären können. Mit Hilfe der Event-History-Analysis von Daten der PAIRFAM-Umfrage wird in drei empirischen Studien untersucht, ob und wie Geschlechterrolleneinstellungen die Heiratswahrscheinlichkeit beeinflussen. Eine Querschnittsbetrachtung des Zusammenhangs zwischen Geschlechtsrolleneinstellungen und Heiratsverhalten zeigt, dass Geschlechterrolleneinstellungen in der Stichprobe mit Zeitpunkt und Wahrscheinlichkeit einer Heirat korreliert. Befragte, die traditionalistische oder konservative Einstellungen vertreten, heiraten eher als Liberale und Egalitäre. In einer Längsschnittbetrachtung werden die Auswirkungen von Einstellungsänderungen im Laufe der Zeit erforscht, wobei häufige Änderungen der Geschlechtsrolleneinstellungen mit späteren und weniger wahrscheinlichen Übergängen zur Ehe korrelieren. Eine Betrachtung beider Partner untersucht, wie sich Paare mit kohärenten Geschlechterrolleneinstellungen von nicht übereinstimmenden Paaren unterscheiden, wobei eine gemeinsame Einstellung nicht mit einer höheren Heiratswahrscheinlichkeit korreliert ist. Paare, die mit unterschiedlichen Einstellungen beginnen und zu einer gemeinsamen Einstellung gelangen, heiraten jedoch mit höherer Wahrscheinlichkeit. Diese Dissertation trägt zur aktuellen Literatur bei, indem sie den Zusammenhang zwischen Geschlechterrolleneinstellungen und Heirat untersucht. Durch die Anwendung von Handlungstheorien auf Mikroebene und die Übertragung von Makro-Theorien des demografischen Wandels auf die Einzel- und Paarebene zeige ich, dass Geschlechterrolleneinstellungen eine potenzielle Triebkraft des demografischen Wandels sind. Sie beeinflussen die Wahrscheinlichkeit einer Heirat und stellen einen potenziellen Übertragungsmechanismus für Theorien des Wandels auf Makroebene dar.
    Abstract: This dissertation leverages the heterogeneity in gender role attitudes in the German population to investigate if individual attitudes towards gender roles can explain the gradual loss of relevance of marriage. Using event history analysis on data from the PAIRFAM survey, I test if and how gender role attitudes influence the likelihood of marrying in three empirical studies. Chapter 3 offers a cross-sectional assessment of the empirical relationship between gender role attitudes and marital behavior. Gender role attitudes are in the sample correlated with the timing and likelihood of marriage. Respondents expressing traditionalist or conservative attitudes are more likely to marry than liberals and egalitarians. Chapter 4 investigates the relationship with a longitudinal outlook, exploring the effect of attitude change over time. Here I show that respondents whose attitudes are more stable over time tend to be more likely to marry, while frequent changes in gender role attitudes correlate with later and less likely transitions to marriage. Chapter 5 focuses on both partners, investigating how couples with gender attitudes that are coherent differ from mismatched couples. I show that sharing a common attitude is uncorrelated to more likely marriages. However, couples who start with different attitudes and reach a shared one are more likely to marry. This dissertation contributes to the current literature by exploring the connection between attitudes and marriage. By applying micro-level theories of action and transposing macro-level theories of demographic change at the individual and couple level, I show that gender role attitudes are indeed a potential driver of demographic change through their role in shaping the likelihood of marriage, offering a potential mechanism of transmission for macro-level theories of change.

The primary anchoring question is whether and how class becomes a condition of possibility for coping with traumas. What does it mean to experience deindustrialization, crises, or domestic violence from a specific class position? Do the coping mechanisms differ along the lines of class, gender, race or ethnicity? The text negotiates such questions, traveling back and forth from psychoanalysis to sociology, and from the global to the local, while critically engaging with memories, narratives, and myths engraved into social and personal histories. Through a dialogic quest for what is silenced, and what is salient within oral, written, and visual testimonies, it foregrounds what the upper classes prefer to neglect: the traumatizing core of the new class divide.     Abstract: Waiting for the Revolution to End explores the Syrian revolution through the experiences of citizens in exile. Based on more than three years of embedded fieldwork with Syrians displaced in the border city of Gaziantep (southern Turkey), the book places the Syrian revolution and its tragic aftermath under ethnographic scrutiny. It charts the evolution from peaceful uprising (2011) to armed confrontation (2012), descent into fully fledged conflict (2013) and finally to proxy war (2015), to propose an understanding of revolution beyond success and failure. While the Assad regime remains in place, the Syrian revolution (al-thawra) still holds a transformational power that can be located on intimate and world-making scales. Charlotte Al-Khalili traces the unintended consequences of revolution and its unexpected consequences to reveal the reshaping of Syrian life-worlds and exiles’ evolving theorizations, experiences and imaginations of al-thawra. She describes the in-between spatio-temporal realm inhabited by Syrians displaced to Turkey as they await the revolution’s outcomes, and maps the revolution’s multidimensional and multi-scalar effects on their everyday life. By following the chronology of events inside Syria and Syrians’ geography of displacement, the book makes the relation between revolution and displacement its centerpiece, both as an ethnographic object and an analytical device.     Abstract: Für US-amerikanische Schulen wurden seit der Bürgerrechtsbewegung Antidiskriminierungsgesetze und -strategien entwickelt bzw. erkämpft, doch bleibt Rassismus für sie weiterhin ein wirkmächtiges Phänomen. In einer ethnographischen Diskursanalyse untersucht Saskia Terstegen, welche Bedeutsamkeit der Differenzdimension Race in der Schule für die (De-)Privilegierung von Schüler:innen, Lehrer:innen und Adminstrator:innen zukommt. Hierfür werden subjektivierungs-, diskurs- und rassismustheoretische Perspektiven auf Race, whiteness und Widerstand entwickelt. Auf Basis von Daten, die an zwei Highschools zur Zeit der Wahl Donald Trumps zum Präsidenten der USA entstanden sind, wird herausgearbeitet, wie whiteness als schulische Norm anerkannt und herausgefordert wird. Mit dem Konzept des schulischen Raceregimes unterbreitet die Studie einen machttheoretischen Vorschlag, um das Verhältnis der Stabilisierung und Irritation von Rassismus in der Schule vor dem Hintergrund pädagogischer Verhältnisse zu fassen. Die Autorin Dr. Saskia Terstegen ist wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Fachbereich Erziehungswissenschaften der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main. Zu ihren Forschungsschwerpunkten zählen Macht, Subjektivierung und Bildung; Biographien, Bildung(sinstitutionen) und Differenz in Migrationsgesellschaften; soziale Ungleichheit und diskriminierungskritische Perspektiven sowie Methoden und Methodologien qualitativer Sozialforschung.

    Abstract: Pauline Albrecht untersucht in ihrer Studie den Übergang junger Geflüchteter in den Arbeitsmarkt und verknüpft hiermit die Berufsbildungs- mit der Migrationsforschung. Am Forschungsstil der Grounded Theory orientiert werden Bildungs- und Erwerbsbiografien junger Menschen, die das Berliner Übergangssystem durchlaufen haben, rekonstruiert. Ausgehend von berufsvorbereitenden Angeboten werden Anschlussverläufe von geflüchteten Jugendlichen erforscht. Die subjektive Perspektive der jungen Fluchtmigrant*innen zeigt differenzierte Wahrnehmungs- und Umgangsweisen in der Auseinandersetzung mit dem Bildungs- und Ausbildungssystem, wohingegen die institutionelle Perspektive der pädagogischen Fachkräfte unterschiedliche Anforderungen an die jungen Menschen heranträgt und somit systemische Bedingungen der Berufsvorbereitung aufrechterhält. Die Frage, wie sich Anschlussverläufe aus der Berufsvorbereitung entwickeln, wird hinsichtlich einer Perspektivengegenüberstellung aufgegriffen. Zum Teil zeigen sich hier Überschneidungen sowie positive Passungsverhältnisse, jedoch auch Gegensätzlichkeiten und Widersprüche. Die Studie schließt eine erziehungswissenschaftliche Forschungslücke hinsichtlich des Übergangs junger Menschen mit Fluchthintergrund in den ersten Arbeitsmarkt. Die Autorin Pauline Albrecht ist wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin an der Fachhochschule Potsdam im Fachbereich Sozial- und Bildungswissenschaften. In dem partizipativen, qualitativen Forschungsprojekt "laeneAs - ländliche Bildungsumwelten von Geflüchteten in der beruflichen Ausbildung" untersucht sie die Herausforderungen, die sich Geflüchteten während der Ausbildung stellen. .

    Abstract: Seit dem Ersten Weltkrieg galten Massenkommunikation und Propaganda als integrale Faktoren des politischen und militärischen Geschehens. Damit wuchs der Bedarf an systematischer Expertise und wissenschaftlicher Erforschung. Während des Zweiten Weltkrieges und im Kalten Krieg wurde die Planung, Beobachtung und Analyse von Propaganda zu einem wichtigen Feld strategischer Wissensproduktion. Im Wege einer dreiseitig verflochtenen Wahrnehmungs- und Beziehungsgeschichte untersucht Benno Nietzel, welche Rolle Kommunikationsexperten und Wissenschaftler in der Propaganda dreier Länder spielten: in den Vereinigten Staaten, in Deutschland und der Sowjetunion. Verschiedene Akteursgruppen konkurrierten jeweils um Gehör, Einfluss und Zuständigkeiten auf dem Gebiet der Propaganda. Aus ihren Erfolgen und ihrem Scheitern ergibt sich eine alternative Geschichte von Verwissenschaftlichungsprozessen und Expertentum im 20. Jahrhundert, die von Ungleichzeitigkeiten, Gegenläufigkeiten und Widersprüchen gekennzeichnet ist

    Abstract: "A "remake" of C. Wright Mills' The Power Elite, this book charts patterns of elite domination amid paradigmatic changes in the structuring of U.S. social institutions and political life since the postwar period that lay bare the essentially corrupt and authoritarian nature of neoliberal capitalism and the power elites behind it. Driven by an inexhaustible pursuit of profits and wealth accumulation, power elites of the last half century conceived of and imposed a new form of global capitalism that has positioned the "free market" as an ultimate political and cultural authority. In the process, they have suppressed policies and rules, social movements, and political organizations that might impede profitability and exacted an unspeakable toll on human and planetary life. Similar to Mills, The New Power Elite elucidates the means through which today's elites accumulate wealth and power, including the subordination of military and governmental systems, media and culture, and labor, finance, and production to "market imperatives." It departs from Mills, however, in accounting for major transformations in the political geography of corporations and labor, the rise of finance capital, and role of U.S. imperialism in the structuring of global capitalism. And, unlike Mills, the book argues that while the American State, mass media, and cultural institutions can still operate as a sites of contestation, political, military, and cultural institutions today should not be considered as autonomous from market forces, as their principal function is to serve the interests of capital and operate on its behalf"--

    Abstract: This book analyzes the coloniality of the concept of taste that gastronomy constructed and normalized as modern. It shows how gastronomy's engagement with rationalist and aesthetic thought, and with colonial and capitalist structures, led to the desensualization, bureaucratization and racialization of its conceptualization of taste. The Coloniality of Modern Taste provides an understanding of gastronomy that moves away from the usual celebratory approach. Through a discussion of nineteenth-century gastronomic publications, this book illustrates how the gastronomic notion of taste was shaped by a number of specifically modern constraints. It compares the gastronomic approach to taste to conceptualizations of taste that emerged in other geographical and philosophical contexts to illustrate that the gastronomic approach stands out as particularly bereft of affect. The book argues that the understanding of taste constructed by gastronomic texts continues to burden the affective experience of taste, while encouraging patterns of food consumption that rely on an exploitative and unsustainable global food system.
