    Description / Table of Contents: Over the past few years, the cross-disciplinary field of research devoted to family and kinship history in Europe has seen the emergence of an important stream of studies developing wide-ranging comparative perspectives on great spaces and long periods. Their hypotheses and interpretative models differ somewhat with regard of the factors taken into account, and of the underlying logic identified for these processes. The first part of this volume presents a broad discussion of these recent developments. The chapters in the second part have an alpine focus and are dealing more or less directly with the theoretical framework proposed by Dionigi Albera's book, Au fil des generations. The contributions to the third part of the book are further opening up the field. They leave the alpine terrain and are dedicated to some European contexts, with approaches that are generally influenced by the experience of Albera's analysis of Alpine Europe

    Abstract: This book examines recent debates on the political dynamics of cosmopolitanism, particularly in its connection with European civil society and the public sphere. The aim of the volume is to trace to what extent cosmopolitanism corresponds to «second modernity», with the latter concept referring to the potential for consensus, the creation of multiple political alternatives and the recognition of otherness. The book accordingly explores questions about democratic legitimacy and the formation of social and political institutions and presents empirical research on phenomena such as global violence.The volume is intended to constitute a cosmopolitan project in itself, comprising contributions from scholars with very diverse approaches. Together, these contributions provide a stimulating analysis of what cosmopolitanism can offer to socially and politically diverse twenty-first-century societies

In den letzten Jahrzehnten wurde dem Leid der tibetischen Flüchtlinge sehr viel Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt und in Bildbänden, Filmen, Studien und Romanen dokumentiert. Die Nachkommen der Flüchtlinge fanden bisher aber nur wenig Beachtung. Doch gerade weil sie die Erfahrungen und Erlebnisse ihrer Eltern und Grosseltern nicht teilen, ihre Sozialisation in einem anderen Land erfahren haben und sich dennoch stark mit dem Schicksal Tibets verbunden fühlen, drängen sich kulturwissenschaftliche Fragen auf - vor allem die nach ihrer Verbindung zur tibetischen Herkunft. Die vorliegende Studie befasst sich erstmals ausführlich mit Biografien von Tibeterinnen und Tibetern der zweiten Generation in Indien und in der Schweiz. Zentrale kulturelle Aspekte wie der Bezug zum Buddhismus, zur tibetischen Sprache oder zu Rezeptionen tibetischer Identität werden mit zahlreichen Zitaten, Bildern und Forschungsanekdoten eindrucksvoll dargestellt.     Description / Table of Contents: This book deals with the subject of identity and identification within contemporary cultural studies and includes a selection of papers from the 14th International 'Culture & Power' Conference held in Ciudad Real, Spain, in 2010. The volume contributes to contemporary debates on identity-construction practices from various theoretical positions in different social, historic and national contexts. The initial section presents various theoretical discussions on how identity construction and identification phenomena are framed within current disciplinary debates about cultural studies and its future as an academic inter- and transdisciplinary field of enquiry. In the following sections, identity and identification processes are analysed from a variety of perspectives. In particular, the articles delve into the construction of marginalised identities and the exploration of identification processes that subvert dominant, established or accepted cultural identities.     Description / Table of Contents: This volume attempts to critically re-think the ways in which facts and myths, histories and fictions that shape current and past understandings of (the US of) «America» have been perceived, assimilated, transformed and, in sum, «translated» in the arena of global culture, especially in Europe. The essays presented analyze notions of «America» and «Americanness», and their interpretation, transformation and appropriation through linguistic translation, adaptation, domestication and re-imagination, at all levels of the cultural semiosphere. Essays focus on trans-Atlantic and trans-American migration and displacement of political ideas, economic models, and cultural discourses. How has translation served as a way of rewriting certain crucial stories, tropes, or images across different cultural media or genres? What are the challenges of translating gender identity and ethnic and cultural connections? How have political ideas and cultural practices been negotiated across the Atlantic over the centuries? This volume develops from some of the papers presented at the Twentieth International Conference of the Italian Association for North-American Studies (AISNA) held at the University of Torino in September 2009
