    Abstract: "In 1918, as Europe's continental empires were violently replaced with a patchwork of nominally post-imperial nation-states, elites in Poland drew on the global language of civilization to launch a state-building mission in the non-ethnically Polish, nationally contested, and war-torn region of Volhynia. By following eastward in the footsteps of border guards, military settlers, provincial administrators, regional activists, health professionals, urban planners, teachers, and academics, the work traces how a colorful cast of characters adapted the prevailing language of European imperialism while simultaneously rejecting the very idea that they could act imperialistically in an historically Polish borderland. Their tension-ridden approaches were never static. Some Polish nationalists declared that they alone could act as benign civilizational conduits in mainly Ukrainian villages and predominantly Jewish towns, while others attempted to craft a regional identity. But by the eve of the Second World War, the province had become a testing ground for visions of demographic transformation that favoured antisemitic schemes of Jewish emigration and the forced assimilation of non-Polish Slavs. Throughout, doubts about the national strength of local Poles, competitions between diverse groups of self-declared civilizers, and mounting anxieties about the rise of Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, meant that Volhynia served as an arena for redefining the precise contours of the modern Polish nation. Rather than simply a successor state embroiled in the quintessentially east European problem of "national minorities," Poland was a place where people engaged with the concept of civilization, recasting its meaning in conceptual spaces between empire and nation-state

    Abstract: Based on published primary and secondary materials and oral interviews with some eighty communal and organizational leaders, experts and scholars, this book both provides a comparative systematic account of the reconstruction of Jewish communal life in Germany and in Austria (where 98% live in the capital, Vienna) after 1945. The author explains the process of communal reconstruction over the next six decades, and its outcomes in the two countries. The monograph focuses on the variety of prevailing perceptions about the state of Israel, the relationship to the country of residence, the Jewish religion, the memory of the Shoah, the influx of post-soviet immigrants etc. Cohen-Weisz examines the changes in Jewish group identity and its impact on communal development. The study analyzes the similarities and differences in regard to the political, social, institutional and identity developments of the two communities, and their members' changing attitudes toward, and relationship with the surrounding societies. The study seeks to show how these developed in diverse national political circumstances and varying governmental policies.

It uses aspects of contemporary pantribal practices such as the inter-tribal pow wow, substance abuse recovery programs such as the Wellbriety Movement, and political involvement to provide insights into contemporary Native religious identity. Simply put, this book addresses the question what does it mean to be an Indigenous American in the 21st century, and how does one express that indigeneity religiously? It proposes that practices and ideologies appropriate to the pan-Indian context provide much of the foundation for maintaining a sense of aboriginal spiritual identity within modernity. Individuals and families who identify themselves as Native American can participate in activities associated with a broad network of other Native people, in effect performing their Indian identity and enacting the values that are connected to that identity.

    Abstract: Between 1880 and 1914 several million Eastern Europeans migrated West. Much is known about the immigration experience of Jews, Poles, Greeks, and others, notably in the United States. Yet, little is known about the paths of mass migration across "green borders" via European railway stations and ports to destinations in other continents. Ellis Island, literally a point of passage into America, has a much higher symbolic significance than the often inconspicuous departure stations, makeshift facilities for migrant masses at European railway stations and port cities, and former control posts along borders that were redrawn several times during the twentieth century. This volume focuses on the journeys of Jews from Eastern Europe through Germany, Britain, and Scandinavia between 1880 and 1914. The authors investigate various aspects of transmigration including medical controls, travel conditions, and the role of the steamship lines; and also review the rise of migration restrictions around the globe in the decades before 1914.

    Abstract: The fragility of the liberal democratic state after 1789 is illustrated in the history of the European Jews from the French Revolution to the Holocaust. Emancipation and hope of emancipation amongst the European Jewish population created a plethora of Jewish identities and forms of patriotism. This book takes the original approach of studying European Jewish patriotism as a whole, with particular attention given to creative literature. Despite their growing awareness of racial, genocidal hatred, most European Jews between 1789 and 1939 tended to be patriotic toward the countries of their citizenship, an attitude reflected in the literature of the time. Yet, the common assumption among emancipated Jews that anti-Semitism would fade in a world governed by reason proved false. For millions of European Jews, the infinite possibilities they associated with emancipation came to nothing. The Jewish experience exposed many of the weaknesses and failings of the liberal multicultural state, and demonstrated that its survival cannot be taken for granted but is dependent on vigilance and struggle. By focusing on Jewish patriotism from 1789-1939, this book explores the nature of the liberal state, how it can fail, and the conditions needed for its survival.

    Abstract: Die jüdische Traditionsbildung hat über Jahrtausende und über Kontinente hinweg die Vorstellung einer ungebrochenen Existenz des Judentums erzeugt. Alfred Bodenheimer legt die Wurzeln dieser außerordentlichen Traditionsbildung frei und zeigt, wie sich diese Vorstellung bis heute zu erhalten vermochte. Ausgehend von dem Konzept des Trauma-Transports macht er deutlich, dass dem ungebrochenen Erzählfluss der jüdischen Tradition immer ein Gebrochenes zugeordnet ist, die jüdische Geschichte sich als Krisengeschichte herausstellt. Der Akt des Erzählens erweist sich dabei als Integrationsfigur, die das Schicksal von Exil und Diaspora vermittelt und mit Sinn füllt. Der Autor untersucht in vier zusammenhängenden Essays die Veränderung dieses Erzählens und die Gefährdungen jüdischer Traditionsbildung vom biblischen Zeitalter bis in die Gegenwart, die nach der Shoah und der Gründung des Staates Israel vor völlig neue Herausforderungen gestellt ist.   Biographische Informationen Alfred Bodenheimer, geb. 1965, Professor für Religionsgeschichte und Literatur des Judentums an der Universität Basel, daneben bis 2008 Professor für Hebräische und Jüdische Literatur an der Hochschule für Jüdische Studien in Heidelberg und von 2005 - 2008 deren Rektor. Kritisch beäugen seine israelischen Freunde die junge Deutsche, und auch Yorams Mutter Aliza ist wenig begeistert von der Wahl ihres Sohnes. In Deutschland geht es dem jungen Paar kaum anders: Die viel und stolz zitierte "Aufarbeitung der Vergangenheit" scheint an der polierten Oberfläche der Realität abgeperlt zu sein. Aber die Gefährdungen des Glücks kommen nicht nur von außen. Yoram, dem leidenschaftlichen Architekten, gelingt es nicht immer, seine Gefühle von den Albträumen der Kindheit zu lösen. Und auch die drei Frauen in seinem Leben, Aliza, Carla und die Tochter Vered, haben ihre eigenen Erinnerungen, Ängste und Hoffnungen.
