    Abstract: Increasingly, organizations are looking beyond conventional data provided by data aggregators and vendors in their industry. But alternative data, because of the way it’s generated and collected, is typically noisy and often ephemeral. A model’s ability to learn and correctly predict future outcomes is greatly influenced by the underlying data. Clean, complete data can make the difference between deriving correct and incorrect conclusions. Incomplete data can restrict its application to only a small set of techniques. And for alternative data sources, missed data is almost impossible to recover. Anjali Samani (CircleUp) explains two simple frameworks for evaluating a dataset’s candidacy for smoothing and quantitatively determining the optimal imputation strategy and the number of consecutive missing values that can be imputed without material degradation in signal quality. To extract meaningful signals from alternative data, it’s necessary to apply denoising and imputation to generate clean and complete time series. There are numerous ways to smooth a noisy data series and impute missing values, each with relative strengths and weaknesses. Smoothing removes noise from the data and allows patterns and trends to be identified more easily. It can, however, make a series appear less volatile than it is and may mask the very patterns you’re seeking to identify. So you have to know when you should and shouldn’t smooth a series, and if it is smoothed, what type of smoothing you should apply. Similarly, missing observations in time series can be imputed in many ways. These are covered in detail in both academic and practitioner literature. What caused the missing values in the first place and how the data is going to be used in downstream applications can often inform the most appropriate strategy for imputation. However, when there are multiple options to choose from, you have to objectively choose between different strategies and identify how many consecutive missing values can be safely imputed.     Abstract: When you access a web page, bidders such as Criteo must determine in a few dozens of milliseconds if they want to purchase the advertising space on the page. At that moment, a real-time auction takes place, and once you remove all the communication exchange delays, it leaves a handful of milliseconds to compute exactly how much to bid. In the past year, Criteo has put a large amount of effort into reshaping its in-house machine learning stack responsible for making such predictions—in particular, opening it to new technologies such as TensorFlow. Unfortunately, even for simple logistic regression models and small neural networks, Criteo’s initial TensorFlow implementations saw inference time increase by 100, going from 300 microseconds to 30 milliseconds. Nicolas Kowalski and Axel Antoniotti outline how Criteo approached this issue, discussing how Criteo profiled its model to understand its bottleneck; why commonly shared solutions such as optimizing TensorFlow build for the target hardware, freezing and cleaning up the model, and using accelerated linear algebra (XLA) ended up being lackluster; and how Criteo rewrote is models from scratch, reimplementing cross-features and hashing functions using low-level TF operations in order to factorize as much as possible all TensorFlow nodes in its model.     Abstract: The TensorFlow ecosystem contains many valuable assets. One of which is the highly acclaimed TensorFlow high-level API. It’s critical for a fast and lightweight approach to reducing lead time in deep learning model development and hypothesis testing. It’s now possible to quickly and easily develop a novel deep learning solution to meet an important need in practice: data bias and augmentation in NLP. Solving this problem would have a far-reaching impact in model bias, offensive-language detection, language personalization, and classification. KC Tung (Microsoft) details his work to satisfy a need of an enterprise customer (one of the largest airlines in the world) for a model that can accurately review, classify, and store texts from aircraft maintenance logs to comply with FAA regulations on aviation safety. The customer’s data is imbalanced and biased toward certain categories. Training machine learning models with imbalanced data inevitably leads to model bias, and text generation is a novel and important approach for data augmentation. In NLP, many current approaches to augmenting minority data are unsupervised and are limited to synonym swap, insertion, deletion, or oversampling. These generalized approaches often lead to a trade-off between precision and recall. They also don’t work well in practice, as enterprise data is almost always domain specific. There needs to be a better framework to generate new corpus by learning from any domain-specific underrepresented text. KC presents a novel deep learning framework built with TensorFlow to quickly achieve this goal. A benchmark model is trained on the balanced dataset. From this dataset a class is undersampled as the underrepresented, minority class text. Then a gated recurrent unit (GRU) model learns to generate more underrepresented text, which helps training a long short-term memory (LSTM) model that classifies text. The result on holdout data shows that the model trained with generated text is surprisingly effective. Classification accuracy, precision, and recall at each class are all on par with the benchmark model without compromising precision or recall. Participants in Architectural Katas, moderated by Neal Ford, work together virtually in small groups of their choosing to solve a challenge an actual organization is facing. Everyone gets the chance to practice their craft with a real software architecture problem in a safe and social environment, and the finalists and winners earn well-deserved bragging rights (not to mention an intriguing line on their résumé). Plus a selected organization working for social good will have some of its gnarliest software architecture problems solved. How it works : You put together a first-rate team of three to five people, ready to tackle an architecture challenge. We’ll share the architecture problem with you at the kickoff on October 20. Then your team will have to solve it, working virtually in whatever way is best for you (video calls, group chat, shared docs, etc.). Teams will submit their solutions by November 3 and reconvene at the semifinals on November 17 to find out which will move on to the finals on December 3. At the finals, one member of each team will present their solutions to the judges and a winner will be announced.
