Abstract: Education is vital for economic success, both at the national and the individual level. But education also has significant social effects. This report is OECD’s first attempt to gather and synthesise developments in measuring these social effects. The report focuses on two broad areas: health, and civic and social engagement. In general, better educated people are healthier, and take more part in civic activities. Why should this be so? This publication draws on findings from 13 OECD countries (Austria, Flemish Belgium, Canada, Japan, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom [England and Scotland] and the United States) to provide new models and insights into these important contemporary issues.

Abstract: Based on the Adult Literacy and Life Skills survey conducted in Bermuda, Canada, Italy, Mexico (Nuevo Leon), Norway, and the United States of America in 2003 and 2004, this book presents an initial set of findings that shed new light on the twin processes of skill gain and loss. The book opens with an explanation of the goals and conceptual approach of the survey and comparative profiles of adult skills in participating countries. It then looks at the relationship between education and skills and adult learning and skills. Additional chapters compare the employability of younger and older populations in participating countries, skills and economic outcomes, skills and information and communications technologies, skills and immigration, the effects of parental education on skills, and the effect of skills on health.--Publisher's description

Abstract: Educational attainment is an ever more important factor in shaping young people's life chances. Changing economic and social conditions - information and communication technologies, the globalisation of economic activity, greater personal responsibility and autonomy in all aspects of life - have given knowledge and skills an increasingly central role in the economic success of individuals and nations. In the OECD countries, upper secondary diplomas have become a minimum for successfully entering the labour market and a basis for further participation in lifelong learning.
Abstract: This book presents the results of the project on young adults with low levels of education, conducted jointly by the OECD and the Canadian Policy Research Networks. It examines the extent to which young men and women with low levels of education are marginalized, the role family background plays in making it possible to complete the recognized minimal level of education, and how immigrants overcome the cultural and language gaps to find employment.--Publisher's description
