    Abstract: Vor dem Hintergrund des demografischen Wandels und einer steigenden Zahl Älterer, steht die Gesellschaft vor der Aufgabe, Ideen und Konzepte zu entwickeln, engagierten Älteren sinnvolle Perspektiven zur gleichberechtigten Partizipation zu bieten. Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich vor diesem Hintergrund mit der Motivation älterer Menschen, sich in der nachberuflichen Lebensphase für das Gemeinwohl zu engagieren. Empirischer Ausgangspunkt für die Fragestellung war das Modellprogramm „Erfahrungswissen für Initiativen“, das im Auftrag des Bundesministeriums für Familie, Senioren, Frauen und Jugend in zehn Bundesländern mit der Zielstellung durchgeführt worden ist, ein Handlungs- und Strukturkonzept zu entwickeln, mit dem das Erfahrungswissen Älterer für den Freiwilligenbereich nutzbar gemacht werden kann. Die auf der Grundlage von leitfadengestützten Interviews erhobenen Daten der Stichprobe mit einem Durchschnittsalter von 63 Jahren weisen einen eindeutigen Zusammenhang zwischen lebensgeschichtlichen Ereignissen und konkreten Engagementtätigkeiten nach. Engagement in der nachberuflichen Lebensphase speist sich demnach aus historischen, gesellschaftlichen, kulturellen und familiären Erfahrens- und Erlebensräumen, die in gemeinwohlorientierten Projekten erneut sichtbar werden. Als maßgebliche Einflussfaktoren gelten die Lebensphase der Kindheit und Jugend im Kontext der Kriegs- und Nachkriegszeit, elterliches Vorbild und familiäre Prägung, die Familiengründung, berufliche Entwicklungen und Weiterbildungsteilnahme sowie krisenhafte Lebensereignisse und das Erleben der Phase des Übergangs vom Arbeitsleben in die Phase der Nachberuflichkeit.
    Abstract: In the content of the demographic challenge an increasing number of older people has been searching for a new and active role in society. Therefore voluntary work becomes more and more necessary and develops as an important component in society. It is necessary to develop innovative ideas and concepts according of getting chances for the involvement of these people in local communities. The actual study works on the topic of individual motivation of older people, who decide to become volunteers after their career. The empiric background of the research was the Federal Model Programme „Experience for Initiatives“, that took place under authority of the Federal Ministry für Familiy Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth. About 1.000 older people at the age range from 55 to 70 and older have taken part in courses to become a seniortrainer and get active across the ages. Their aim is to work with children, young and older people and become ambassadors for a new image of old age. The results of the study show the very high importance of individual biography according to the decision to start volunteer work after the family phase and career. Especially the familiar background, historical events (World War Two and the Political Change in Germany) and critical life events influence the way of volunteering. Biographical themes become topical in present volunteer projects of the older people and they are to find in the different fields of community life, where seniors are active. It is obvious, that there exists a great wealth of knowledge and life long experience, that can establish community life and innovation apart from traditional ways of volunteer work.

    Abstract: Diese Dissertation untersucht die Rolle der Massenmedien am Anfang der politischen Transformationsprozesse in den vormals realsozialistischen Staaten Mittel- und Osteuropas am Fallbeispiel der DDR und Ungarn in vergleichender Perspektive. Obwohl existierende Forschungsstudien von einem Zusammenhang zwischen Medien und Demokratisierung ausgehen, fehlten bislang empirisch überzeugende Nachweise über die Rolle der Medien auf die Demokratisierungsprozesse in der Region. Somit wurde ein zentraler – jedoch bislang weitgehend vernachlässigter – Aspekt der Transformationsforschung von dieser Arbeit aufgegriffen. Die Untersuchung konzentriert sich auf die Rolle der Printmedien in der Region, und geht insbesondere der Frage nach, ob die Medien eher als „Katalysator“ der Demokratisierungsprozesse oder doch als „Mitläufer“ zu betrachten sind. Anhand einer vergleichenden Inhaltsanalyse von jeweils zwei offiziellen Tageszeitungen in beiden Ländern zwischen 1989 und 1990, wird in der Arbeit gezeigt, dass die Medien eine aktive und positive Rolle während den unmittelbaren Transformationsprozessen hatten, also als „Katalysatoren“ zu betrachten sind. Die Arbeit kommt zum Ergebnis, dass die Medien die jeweiligen Transformationen zwar selber nicht einzuleiten vermochten, sie jedoch die Ereignisse und die Dynamik, unmittelbar als die jeweilige „Wende“ eingeleitet wurde, verstärkten.
    Abstract: This thesis examines the role played by the mass media at the beginning of the political transformation of the former socialist states of central and eastern Europe, through a direct comparison of the GDR and Hungary. Although existing studies have suggested a casual relationship between the media and democratization, a lack of empirical evidence on the role of the media in democratization processes in the region still existed. Here, a central - but up to now largely neglected - aspect of the research on democratic transformation processes is thus analysed. The thesis attempts to answer the question of whether the media led or followed the democratization processes that were underway in the region by concentrating on print media. Through a comparative content analysis of two official newspapers in each country of analysis between 1989 to1990, it is suggested that the media assumed an active and positive role during the immediate transformation processes. Although the media were not able to initiate the respective transformations, they did act as a catalyst on the unfolding events as soon as the beginning of the demise of the socialist state systems were initiated.

    Abstract: Mittels einer Untersuchung von standardisierten Praktiken (Stadtrundgängen und Stadtrundfahrten) und Dispositiven (Stadtkarten, Reiseführer) fürs „Touren“ von Städten zeigt diese Dissertation, (1) wie die Stadt Berlin in ein virtuelles Objekt, nämlich, einen touristischen Zielort, transformiert wird, ( 2) wie diese Transformation nicht nur durch die Bewegung von Touristen im Raum und das Unterwegssein ermöglicht wird, sondern durch touristische Kommunikation über die Stadt, und (3) wie diese emergente touristische Stadt in einer multiplen und polykontexturalen städtischen Öffentlichkeit eingebettet ist, wo sie in verschiedenen Typen von Beziehung mit naheliegenden Inszenierungen der Stadt eintritt, wie die der Stadt-Marketing und der kollektiven Erinnerungspolitik. Drei weitere Aspekte sind zu erwähnen, die den gesamten Text subtil anregen. Die Dissertation stellt eine neue Theorie des Tourismus als Kommunikationsform, und nicht als Form des Reisens, auf; sie integriert die Luhmannsche Kommunikationstheorie mit der Akteur-Netzwerk-Theorie, und sie ist durchaus empirisch, basierend auf einer jahrlangen ethnographischen Untersuchung (2005-2006) von Praktiken und Dispositiven des „Tourens“ im zeitgenössischen Berlin.
    Abstract: Through the study of standardized practices (walking tours, bus-tours) and devices (maps, guidebooks) for touring cities, this dissertation shows (1) how the city of Berlin is transformed into a virtual object, namely, an urban destination, (2) how such transformation is enabled not simply by tourist movement in space and being away from ‚home‘, but by tourist communication on the city, and (3) how this emergent tourist city is embedded in a multiple and polycontextural urban public sphere, in which it enters into different types of relationship with neighbouring enactments of the city, such as those of city-marketing and collective memory. Subtly informing the whole text there are three aspects to be mentioned: the dissertation proposes a new theory of tourism as a form of communication, not of travel; it integrates Luhmann’s communication theory with actor-network theory; and it is throughout empirical, based on a year-long ethnographic study (2005-2006) of touring practices and devices in contemporary Berlin.

    Abstract: Im Zeitraum 1989 bis 2005 sind per Saldo 1,6 Millionen Menschen aus den neuen in die alten Bundesländer gezogen. Die Mehrheit dieser Binnenwanderer war zwischen 18 und 29 Jahre alt und die Mehrheit war weiblich. Als Ergebnis dieser anhaltenden geschlechtsselektiven Wanderung ist in den neuen Bundesländern eine stark unausgewogene Geschlechterproportion in der Wohnbevölkerung entstanden. In der Altersgruppe der 18- bis 29-Jährigen lag die Geschlechterproportion in den neuen Bundesländern (einschließlich Berlin) im Jahr 2005 nur bei 90 Frauen zu 100 Männern und sank in zahlreichen Landkreisen auf Werte von weniger als 85 zu 100. Eine so unausgewogene Geschlechterproportion ist auch im europäischen Maßstab ungewöhnlich und kommt in keinem ähnlich großen und dicht besiedelten Gebiet vor. Als eine wesentliche Ursache der disproportionalen Wanderung wird ein erhebliches Bildungsgefälle zwischen jungen Frauen und Männern in den neuen Bundesländern identifiziert. Das hohe Bildungsniveau von Frauen ist dabei nicht nur als ökonomischer Faktor für den Fortzug zu sehen: Da Frauen Partnerschaften mit geringer gebildeten Partnern meiden, werden auch Paarbeziehungen mit westdeutschen Männern und damit das Verbleiben in Westdeutschland wahrscheinlicher. Als Ursache für die Auseinanderentwicklung des Bildungsniveaus von Frauen und Männern in den neuen Bundesländern sieht die Studie die Kollision eines Geschlechterarrangements, das seine Wurzeln in der DDR-Geschichte hat, mit den ökonomischen und gesellschaftlichen Veränderungen nach der Wiedervereinigung. Das Rollenbild von Frauen, gekennzeichnet durch hohe Wertschätzung ökonomischer Selbstständigkeit und Orientierung auf Tätigkeiten im qualifizierten Dienstleistungsbereich, erweist sich im wirtschaftlichen und gesellschaftlichen Strukturwandel als prinzipiell anpassungsfähiger als jenes der Männer, deren klassische Tätigkeiten in Industrie und Handwerk eine tief greifende Entwertung erfahren haben.
    Abstract: Between the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the year 2005, 1.6 million people have migrated from East Germany (the former German Democratic Republic – GDR) to West Germany. The majority of these migrants were female and between the ages of 18 and 29. This unbalanced migration has caused a disproportionate sex ratio in the East German population. The sex ratio (in the age group between 18 and 29) in 2005 was only 90 women per 100 men and in many remote counties the ratio was less than 85 to 100. In such a large and densely populated area this phenomenon is unique within Europe. This study identifies the development of a considerable discrepancy in educational levels between women and men in Eastern Germany as one important cause for the disproportionate sex ratio in migration. The higher educational level of women is not only an economic factor: Since women generally prefer partners with at least the same educational level, relationships between East German women and West German men has become much more likely than the opposite. As a cause for the discrepancy in educational levels the study highlights a clash between gender roles rooted in GDR history and structural changes that took place after German reunification. The role model of women – a high valuation of economic independence and orientation towards professions in the service sector – proves to be more adaptable to the economic and social changes in East Germany than the role model of men, whose classical vocations in industry and crafts experience a considerable devaluation.

    Abstract: Wie sieht gute und alltagstaugliche Wohnarchitektur aus Sicht der Bewohner aus? 1.600 Mieterhaushalte in städtischen Wohnungen von acht deutschen Städten und eine kleine Kontrollgruppe von Eigentümern wurden in Face-To-Face-Interviews befragt. Ein Standardfragebogen wurde mit Computergraphiken und Animationen kombiniert. Der Blick gilt nicht der Gebäudehülle, sondern dem Inneren, dem Raumkonzept, der inneren Erschließung und der Freiraumzuordnung. Die Ergebnisse sind ein Leitfaden zum bedarfsgerechten Neu- und Umbau von städtischen Wohnungen für Bauherren und Planer. Die Architekturnutzer, überwiegend städtische Mieter, erhalten eine Stimme im Qualitätsdialog. Dem interessierten Laien wird eine Übersicht über vorhandene und mögliche Typologien des städtischen Wohnens vorgelegt. In den raumsoziologischen Diskurs wird ein Beleg dafür eingebracht, dass das Gebaute die Wohnweise und die Vorstellungswelt über richtiges Wohnen prägt. Die Studie ist ein Brückenschlag zwischen wohnsoziologischer Grundlagen- und anwendungsorientierter Marktforschung. Der Wunsch nach intelligenten Verbindungen von besonntem privaten Außenraum und Wohnung durchzieht die Ergebnisse wie ein grüner Faden. Es ist aus Sicht der Nutzer das Qualitätskriterium Nummer Eins und eine Kritik an vielen Defiziten städtischen Wohnens. Dem Planer zeigt es die Prioritäten eines bedarfsgerechten Neu- und Umbaus von städtischen Wohnungen auf. Das Gewohnte prägt das Gewünschte. Bewohnergruppen mit vergleichbaren soziodemographischen Merkmalen urteilen in Berlin anders als in Dresden oder Bochum. Der vorhandene Wohnungsbestand ist nicht nur das Ergebnis einer historisch spezifischen Wohnweise, sondern zugleich Prägestock und Begrenzung für das gelebte und das gewünschte Wohnen.
    Abstract: What has good housing architecture to be like, when the occupants are questioned.This leading question guidelines a survey among 1,600 tenants-households in eight German cities. Mainly designed as a post occupancy-evaluation the study contributes guidelines for a more userfriendly planning in urban housing construction and renovation. The survey was carried out by face-to-face interviews assisted by a standardized questionnaire, computer graphics and animation. It focuses on the inside, on floorplans, the idea of the floor plan, interior access and the combination of the interior and the private space outdoors. Space- sociology benefits from the results, as they prove, that the way of construction determines housing habits and housing needs. By means of a catalogue showing several common types of floor plans the occupants were consulted and got basic informations in order to distinguish, to evaluate and to choose among existing types of apartments. This work builds a bridge between basic resarch in housing sociology and user oriented market surveys. Unlike most studies on housing needs and demands, this survey does not operate by the fiction of a transparent line of products at housing markets and freedom of choice. Both, the design of the questionnaire and the shown types of floor-plans take the restrictions of the urban housing market into consideration as well as they mark the boundary of lower income demand and a limited knowledge about housing architecture. Many results underline the importance of intelligent links between interior and private space outdoors. Like a “green thread” running through the evaluation it’s a lesson about Number One quality issue from the view of users. We want, what we are used to. The existing housing stock engraves and restricts both, the historical residential manner and housing needs.

    Abstract: Diese Arbeit untersucht die Partizipationsmodi der Migrantennachkommen in Frankreich und Deutschland, insbesondere junger Menschen mit einem türkischen Hintergrund in Deutschland und einem maghrebinischen Hintergrund in Frankreich. Individuen bewegen sich in gesellschaftlichen Räumen, die für das individuelle und kollektive Handeln sowohl Opportunitäten bieten als auch durch Grenzen gekennzeichnet sind. Indem die historischen, institutionellen und strukturellen Rahmenbedingungen Frankreichs und Deutschlands verglichen werden, können die Unterschiede zwischen den Partizipationsmodi junger Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund analysiert werden. Die Auswertung repräsentativer Daten für Frankreich und Deutschland zeigt, dass die Migrantennachkommen in Frankreich deutlich höhere Bildungsabschlüsse erreichen als in Deutschland, wenn gleich die Situation polarisierter ist. Diese Bildungsungleichheiten wirken sich auf die Modi der Partizipation am Arbeitsmarkt aus. Trotz der Defizite der Migrantennachkommen in Deutschland im Hinblick auf das erreichte Bildungsniveau, haben diese eine relativ bessere Situation im Hinblick auf ihre Beschäftigung. Die Nachkommen maghrebinischer Migranten in Frankreich erfahren Arbeitslosigkeit und berufliche Disqualifizierung – trotz relativ hoher Bildungsabschlüsse. Die Partizipationsmodi verweisen auf zwei unterschiedliche, jedoch sich nicht ausschließende soziale Logiken: eine soziale Distanzierung durch Relegation in Deutschland und eine soziale Distanzierung durch Diskriminierung in Frankreich. Schließlich haben der nationale Rahmen und die Diskriminierungserfahrung einen Einfluss auf die von ihnen entwickelten Formen von Zugehörigkeit. So tendieren Jugendliche mit maghrebinischem Hintergrund, die Diskriminierung erfahren eher dazu, ihre Zugehörigkeit zur französischen Nation aufzukündigen. Dagegen hat die Diskriminierungserfahrung keinen Effekt auf das Zugehörigkeitsgefühl türkischer Migrantennachkommen in Deutschland.
    Abstract: This doctoral thesis analyses the modes of participating of young people of migrant origin, in particular those of North-African origin and of Turkish origin in today’s France and Germany respectively. Especially, it deals with their educational achievements, their transition into the labour market and their forms of belonging (citizenship and elective participation). The results from French and German micro-data indicate that despite their severe difficulties in terms of school achievements, young people of Turkish origin have a more favorable working life than young people of North-African origin who are more successful in the educational system. The former experience unemployment, instability and declassing more frequently in their working life. Two types of processes of social distancing emerge from those results: through relegation in Germany and through discrimination in France. Those processes trace back to institutional, structural and symbolic mechanisms. Furthermore, both the national framework and experience of discrimination influence the forms of belonging of those population groups in different ways.
    Abstract: Cette thèse analyse les modes de participation des descendants de migrants, en particulier maghrébins en France et turcs en Allemagne. Selon le cadre national dans lequel ils évoluent, les descendants de migrants n’ont pas les mêmes opportunités et ne font pas face à des contraintes similaires. Ainsi, en confrontant les conditions institutionnelles et structurelles propres aux sociétés française et allemande, il est possible de s’interroger sur les variations des modes de participation des descendants de migrants. Plusieurs dimensions sont étudiées : les inégalités dans l’accès aux titres scolaires, les transitions sur le marché du travail, le type d’emploi et les formes d’appartenance (lien de citoyenneté et lien de participation élective). Les résultats fondés sur l’exploitation quantitative de grandes enquêtes montrent que les descendants de migrants turcs, malgré leur situation d’échec scolaire, ont une vie professionnelle plus favorable que les descendants de migrants maghrébins qui ont quant à eux des diplômes plus élevés. Ces derniers, contrairement aux premiers, connaissent plus souvent le chômage, ils ont quitté le secteur industriel dans lequel étaient concentrés leurs parents, et subissent souvent un déclassement et une instabilité professionnelle. Les résultats obtenus laissent apparaître deux types de logiques sociales : la mise à distance sociale par la relégation en Allemagne et par la discrimination en France. Ces logiques sociales renvoient à des mécanismes institutionnels, structurels et symboliques précis qui sont développés et théorisés dans ce travail. Enfin, les descendants de migrants ne développent pas les mêmes formes d’appartenance. Alors que l’expérience du rejet amène les descendants de migrants maghrébins à révoquer leur appartenance à la société française, les descendants de migrants turcs sont maintenus dans un entre-soi qui, en quelque sorte, « va de soi ».

    Abstract: Die Meinungen über die Chancen einer Demokratisierung im Nahen und Mittleren Osten sind geteilt. Diese Arbeit versucht für Ägypten eine Einschätzung zu geben. Als bevölkerungsreichstes und eines der politisch bedeutsamsten Länder der Region könnte es eine Vorbildfunktion einnehmen. Die Dissertation untersucht an einem Fallbeispiel, den Ausschreitungen zwischen Muslimen und Christen in einem oberägyptischen Dorf 1999/ 2000, in welcher Form und in welchem Ausmaß sich staatliche Akteure, religiöse Institutionen und die Bürger zum heiklen Thema der Gefährdung der Rechte von Minderheiten im öffentlichen Diskurs zu Wort melden und dabei das Kriterium des Pluralismus, im Sinne von Toleranz und Ablehnung von Gewalt, erfüllen. Pessimistische Stimmen versagen dem Nahen und Mittleren Osten insbesondere wegen der dort vorherrschenden Religion eine Reformierbarkeit der politischen Kultur und stigmatisieren den Islam als Demokratisierungshindernis. Diese Arbeit beobachtet jedoch, dass es empirisch bereits einige Merkmale gibt, die auf eine Zunahme von Pluralismus in der ägyptischen Gesellschaft hindeuten. Sie zeigt die Anzeichen für die Herausbildung einer freien Öffentlichkeit und einer Zivilgesellschaft auf, die langfristig auf die Konsolidierung von Demokratie und nicht auf deren Zerstörung hinarbeitet. Gleichzeitig ist diese Arbeit eine Art in Szene gesetztes, lebendiges „Who is who?“ der gegenwärtigen Minderheiten- und Menschenrechtsbewegung in Ägypten. 1
    Abstract: The current status of democratization and civil society development in Egypt through the example of the discourse on the indigenous Christian minority of the Copts. Opinions regarding the chances of democratization in the Middle East are divided. The thesis attempts to give an evaluation in the case of Egypt. As the most populous and one of the politically most influencing countries of that region Egypt could take the function of a role model. The dissertation investigates, on the basis of a case study – the clashes between Muslims and Christians in an Upper Egyptian village in 1999/ 2000 - in what form and to what extent state actors, religious institutions and citizens take a stand in public discourse on the sensitive issue of endangering the rights of minorities and thereby meet the criteria of pluralism in the sense of tolerance and rejection of violence. Pessimistic voices deny the Middle East a reformability of its political culture particularly with regard to the predominating religion there and stigmatize Islam as an obstacle to democratization. This study however, shows empirically that there are already some indications that point towards an increase of pluralism in Egyptian society and towards the development of a free public sphere and a civil society that in the long term can lead to the consolidation of democracy and not to its destruction. At the same time this study is a kind of status report and “Who’s who?” of the current minority – and human rights movement in Egypt.

    Abstract: Wissenschaftler, die sich mit der populären Hindu-Religion in Indien befassen, waren schon immer von mündlichen Texten und Ritualen fasziniert, aber überraschenderweise wurden bisher nur wenige Versuche unternommen, die Beziehung zwischen Ritualen und Texten systematisch zu analysieren. Das vorliegende Buch trägt dazu bei, diese Lücke zu schließen. Die Studie konzentriert sich auf die Dynamik eines lokalen (nicht-brahmanischen) Rituals, seine modulare Organisation und innere Logik, die Interaktion zwischen narrativem Text und Ritual sowie die Bedeutung des lokalen bzw. translokalen Charakters des Textes im rituellen Kontext. Sie zeigt, dass die Untersuchung von Texten in ihrem Kontext hilft, die Komplexität religiöser Traditionen und die Art und Weise, in der Ritual und Text programmatisch eingesetzt werden, besser zu verstehen. Die Autorin bietet eine anschauliche Beschreibung eines bisher unbeachteten Ritualsystems sowie die erste Übersetzung eines Textes namens Icakkiyamman-Katai (IK). Der in tamilischer Sprache verfasste IK stellt eine wesentlich erweiterte Form einer Kernversion dar, die wahrscheinlich bis ins siebte Jahrhundert n. Chr. zurückreicht. Im Gegensatz zur klassischen Quelle ist dieser Text in eine lebendige Tradition eingebunden und wird ständig neu gestaltet. Eine Reihe von Textversionen wurde in Form eines Konspekts zusammengefasst, der Aufschluss über die Variabilität bzw. Stabilität des Textes gibt und unser Wissen über bardische Kreativität erweitert.     Abstract: Zusammenfassung: Participatory development is the most widespread form of development today, where participation implies that beneficiaries are empowered to take development into their own hands in addition to being encouraged to cooperate with the government to ensure sustainability of their initiatives. Participatory development has been deemed particularly suitable for socially excluded groups, following the formula: participation equals inclusion and social exclusion is the opposite of participation. In this dissertation I will show that participation in development projects can take various forms and bring about unexpected outcomes. This finding is based on two field studies of NGO-led social inclusion interventions, one focusing on a tribe called Sahariyas in India and the other on a Roma (i.e. Gypsy) community in Montenegro. I argue that on one hand, the beneficiaries desired to have access to services and to be included in “the project of modernity” but on the other, they were much more interested in improving the wellbeing of their group than in working toward social integration with the mainstream. This state of affairs calls attention to some limitations that can be found in these participatory development projects, one of them being the tendency among NGOs to prioritize representations of project success over the real impact of their project on the beneficiaries

    Abstract: In the early years of the Republic, as Americans tried to determine what it meant to be an American, they also wondered what it meant to be an American child. A defensive, even fearful, approach to childhood gave way to a more optimistic campaign to integrate young Americans into the Republican experiment. In this work, historians unearth the experiences of and attitudes about children and youth during the decades following the American Revolution. Beginning with the revolution itself, the contributors explore a broad range of topics, from the ways in which American children and youth participated in and learned from the revolt and its aftermaths, to developing notions of ideal childhoods as they were imagined by new religious denominations and competing ethnic groups, to the struggle by educators over how the society that came out of the Revolution could best be served by its educational systems. The volume concludes by foreshadowing future child saving efforts by reformers committed to constructing adequate systems of public health and child welfare institutions. Rooted in the historical literature and primary sources, this book is a resource in our understanding of origins of modern ideas about children and youth and the conflation of national purpose and ideas related to child development

    Abstract: Uzi Leibner aims to provide the most accurate picture possible of the nature and history of the rural settlement in the Lower Galilee during Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods when this region played an important role in the development of both Judaism and Christianity. In an attempt to draw a historical reconstruction based on systematic data, a test case area in the »heart« of ancient Galilee was chosen for this research. Uzi Leibner used two distinct disciplines: the study of the relevant historical sources and the advanced archaeological field survey. Greek, Latin, Hebrew and Aramaic sources concerning settlements in the region were translated and discussed. Some fifty archaeological sites from the periods under discussion were identified and surveyed. The analysis of the finds enabled the author to draw a detailed portrait of settlement - including periods of construction, abandonment, prosperity and decline in each site and in the region as a whole. This book sheds new light on major historical issues such as the origins of the Galilean Jewry in the Second Temple Period, the First Jewish Revolt and its outcomes, the Jews of Galilee under Christian regime, demography, economy, continuity and decline

    Abstract: Die Polizeiführung bemüht sich seit geraumer Zeit um die Einstellung von Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund und um eine Erhöhung des Frauenanteils in den eigenen Reihen. Dies führt - zumindest in Bezug auf Geschlecht – zu einem rapiden Wandel in der Zusammensetzung des Personals. Sonja M. Dudek untersucht, wie Polizistinnen und Polizisten organisationsinterne Veränderungsprozesse in Bezug auf mehr Heterogenität kommentieren, reflektieren und bewerten. Der Schwerpunkt der empirischen Untersuchung liegt auf der Analyse polizeitypischer Umgangsweisen mit Vielfalt. Für die vorliegende Untersuchung erhielt die Autorin den Preis der Deutschen Hochschule der Polizei 2007.

    Abstract: Der soziale, kulturelle und ökonomische Wandel von einer fordistisch geprägten Industriegesellschaft zu einer postindustriellen Wissensgesellschaft stellt die Steuerung urbaner Zusammenhänge durch die Stadtplanung vor neue Herausforderungen. Oliver Frey arbeitet das Modell einer "amalgamen Stadt" heraus und benennt die spezifischen Bedingungen von Urbanität als Kennzeichen einer "kreativen Stadt". Es wird aufgezeigt, wie die Überlagerungen von gemischten Strukturen im Sinne einer Heterogenität sozialer Gruppen sowie durch vielschichtige Nutzungen der Orte eine Ressource für die städtische Zivilgesellschaft darstellen. Die Studie wurde mit dem Rudolf-Wurzer Preis für Raumplanung 2008 von der Stadt Wien und der Technischen Universität Wien ausgezeichnet. Das Buch wendet sich an Dozierende und Studierende der raumbezogenen Sozialwissenschaften, der Raumplanung, Geographie sowie Architektur und enthält wertvolle Hinweise für die Praxis der Stadtentwicklung.

    Abstract: Why is national identity such a potent force in people's lives? And is the force positive or negative? In this thoughtful and provocative book, Elizabeth Theiss-Morse develops a social theory of national identity and uses a national survey, focus groups, and experiments to answer these important questions in the American context. Her results show that the combination of group commitment and the setting of exclusive boundaries on the national group affects how people behave toward their fellow Americans. Strong identifiers care a great deal about their national group. They want to help and to be loyal to their fellow Americans. By limiting who counts as an American, though, these strong identifiers place serious limits on who benefits from their pro-group behavior. Help and loyalty are offered only to 'true Americans,' not Americans who do not count and who are pushed to the periphery of the national group

Nachhaltiger Konsum und ein gesteigertes Verantwortungsbewusstsein waren die Schlagworte der neuen Verbraucherpolitik, die sich zum Leitbild des informierten Verbrauchers verdichten. In politischen Handlungs- und Entscheidungsprozessen haben sich die auf Sicherheit, Gesundheitsverträglichkeit und Wirtschaftlichkeit gerichteten Verbraucherinteressen als vergleichsweise durchsetzungsschwach erwiesen. Sie stehen damit repräsentativ für das politische Schicksal aller Gemeinwohlinteressen, deren Durchsetzungschance paradoxerweise mit dem Grad ihrer Allgemeinheit schwindet.     Abstract: Addressing an issue that has puzzled the linguistics community for many years, this book offers a novel approach to the exceptional wide scope behaviour of indefinites. It is the first book explicitly dedicated to exceptional wide scope phenomena. Its unique approach offers an explanation for the fact that it is only a proper subset of the indefinites that shows this exceptional wide scope behaviour. The author draws a careful distinction between genuine and apparent scope readings, a distinction that is usually not taken care of and has thus led to certain confusions. In particular, it is argued that functional readings have to be kept strictly apart from non-functional ones and that all proposals that use functional mechanisms to explain the phenomena at hand face severe problems. The existing body of literature on the main issues of the book is thoroughly reviewed. This makes the book well suited as background literature for graduate seminars on those topics.

Christal Morehouse evaluates the anti-human trafficking policy in the United States of America and the Federal Republic of Germany. The author uncovers policy gaps and hidden policy agendas which weaken the German and American governments’ ability to combat human trafficking.     Abstract: Im Herbst 2007 entbrannte der Streit um den Bau einer Moschee im Frankfurter Stadtteil Hausen.
