Abstract: When Flesh Becomes Word collects nine different examples of British libertine literature that appeared before 1750. Three of these--The School of Venus (1680), Venus in the Cloister (1725), and A Dialogue Between a Married Lady and a Maid (1740)--are famous "whore dialogues," dramatic conversations between an older, experienced woman and a younger, inexperienced maid. Previously unavailable in an affordable edition, these dialogues combine sex; education, medical folklore, and erotic literature in a decidedly proto-pornographic form. This edition presents other important examples of libertine literature, including bawdy poetry, a salacious medical treatise, an irreverent travelogue, and a criminal biography. The combination of The combination of both popular and influential texts; presented in this edition provides an accessible introduction to the variety of material available to eighteenth-century readers before the publication of John Cleland's Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure in 1749; 1700 - 1799

Abstract: Main description: Recent research has led to a weakening of the two classical hypotheses on the story of David's rise and a succession narrative. Instead, attention has focussed on the texts in II Samuel 1-5, which are seen as being of crucial importance for the literary genesis of the story of David. The present study reveals a first continuous account from before the time of exile, which was produced in the 7th century BC. Thus it explains David's double kingship of Israel and Juda as a proto-deuteronomistic foundation narrative from the late Age of Kings. The study closes with a sketch of the editorial history of the David narratives in II Samuel and a revision of the historical records.

Abstract: Today, the study of regions is central to academic analysis and policy deliberation on how to respond to the rise of the knowledge economy. Regional Economies as Knowledge Laboratories illustrates how newer types of regional analysis--utilising scientometrics, knowledge services measures and university networks, and concepts such as knowledge life cycles, experimental knowledge creation, and knowledge ethics--are leading to a perception that regional economies increasingly resemble knowledge laboratories

Abstract: Annotation, Throughout the Middle East, Islamist charities and social welfare organizations play a major role in addressing the socioeconomic needs of Muslim societies, independently of the state. Through case studies of Islamic medical clinics in Egypt, the Islamic Center Charity Society in Jordan, and the Islah Women's Charitable Society in Yemen, Janine A. Clark examines the structure and dynamics of moderate Islamic institutions and their social and political impact. Questioning the widespread assumption that such organizations primarily serve the poorer classes, Clark argues that these organizations in fact are run by and for the middle class. Rather than the vertical recruitment or mobilization of the poor that they are often presumed to promote, Islamic social institutions play an important role in strengthening social networks that bind middle-class professionals, volunteers, and clients. Ties of solidarity that develop along these horizontal lines foster the development of new social networks and the diffusion of new ideas

Abstract: The Gilded Age-the time between Reconstruction and the Spanish-American War-marked the beginnings of modern America. The advertising industry became an important part of selling the American Dream. Americans dined out more than ever before, and began to take leisure activities more seriously. Women's fashion gradually grew less restrictive, and architecture experienced an American Renaissance. Twelve narrative chapters chronicle how American culture changed and grew near the end of the 20th century. Included are chapter bibliographies, a timeline, a cost comparison, and a suggested reading lis

Note: Includes bibliographical references and index , Biographical note: Habilitationsschrift, Theologische Fakultät der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena, 2003. Die Untersuchung schließt mit einer redaktionsgeschichtlichen Skizze der Daviderzählungen im zweiten Samuelbuch und einer Revision der geschichtlichen Zeugnisse , Main description: Recent research has led to a weakening of the two classical hypotheses on the story of David's rise and a succession narrative. The study closes with a sketch of the editorial history of the David narratives in II Samuel and a revision of the historical records , Review text: "Anhänge mit redaktionsgeschichtlichem Gesamtbild, Übersetzung, Stellen- und Sachregistern erschließen den pointierten und anregenden Entwurf, der sich als sehr gewichtiger Beitrag zur Redaktionsgeschichte der Samuelbücher erweisen dürfte."K. Die Beiträge entstanden 1999-2002 im Rahmen der Arbeitsgruppe The Formation of the Book of the Twelve der Society of Biblical Literature.
Abstract: Main description: For some years the view has become established that the Book of the Twelve is a systematically structured literary unity. An exegesis which takes the final canonical text seriously undertakes to understand the structure and theological intention of this unity. The papers collected here attempt to reveal significant structures which overarch the individual components. Particular emphasis is placed on the reconstruction of thematic threads which are created when individual prophets take up topics from their predecessors (e.g. Jehovah's Day, conversion, role of the peoples) and intensify them. The papers were written between 1999 and 2002 under the aegis of the Society of Biblical Literature's Working Group on The Formation of the Book of the Twelve.
Abstract: Review text: "The papers in this book are of highest academic quality, and they are essential reading for a scholar interested in doing serious work on the Minor Prophets. This book is highly recommended."Kevin Mellish in: Religious Studies Review 4/2007 "Der Sammelband leistet einen wertvollen Beitrag zur Forschung. Die Vielfalt der behandelten Themen samt den sich ergebenden Querbeziehungen zwischen Artikeln mit unterschiedlicher hermeneutischer und/oder methodischer Grundausrichtung kann zu einer Fülle von neuen Fragen und Fragestellungen anregen."Ruth Scoralick in: Biblische Zeitschrift 1/2005

Abstract: Rinaldo Walcott's groundbreaking study of black culture in Canada, Black Like Who?, caused such an uproar upon its publication in 1997 that Insomniac Press has decided to publish a second revised edition of this perennial best-seller. With its incisive readings of hip-hop, film, literature, social unrest, sports, music and the electronic media, Walcott's book not only assesses the role of black Canadians in defining Canada, it also argues strenuously against any notion of an essentialist Canadian blackness. As erudite on the issue of American super-critic Henry Louis Gates' blindness to black

Abstract: Featuring essays by leading historians, this brief history is a timely introduction to the interrelated themes of race, ethnicity, and immigration in American history. The book is comprehensive both chronologically -- spanning from 1600 to 2000 and covering everything from the Trail of Tears to the Black Power movement -- and in terms of ethnic groups addressed: it examines not only the history of black-white relations in America, but also the experiences of Irish Catholics, Native Americans, Latinos, Jews, and many others.

Abstract: Publisher's description: In The Great War and the Language of Modernism, Vincent Sherry reopens long unanswered questions regarding the influence of the 1914 war on the verbal experiments of modernist poetry and fiction. Sherry recovers the political discourses of the British campaign and establishes the language to which literary modernism responds with its boldest initiatives. In its wholly new reading of Woolf, Eliot, and Pound, this book restores the historical content and depth of this literature and reveal its most daring import

Abstract: There is currently a popular view that the world is undergoing profound changes in the fundamental relationships upon which it is organised. In particular, there is widespread talk of a 'globalised' economy, facilitated by and associated with 'new' technologies and practices. There is a further consensus that within this 'globalised', 'new' economy, regionalisation in some form is important. The aim of this volume is to address these topical issues, presenting perspectives from which they can be analysed and exploring specific aspects in greater detail. The contributors provide a framework for understanding current trends, and suggest approaches that highlight appropriate ways forward in the context of both opportunities and dangers. In doing so, they discuss specific cases and explore detailed policy possibilities, including the prospect of stimulating change through multinational engagement and debate

Abstract: This fascinating study investigates the experience of English poverty between 1700 and 1900 and the ways in which the poor made ends meet. The phrase 'economy of makeshifts' has often been used to summarise the patchy, desperate and sometimes failing strategies of the poor for material survival. In The poor of England some of the leading, young historians of welfare examine how advantages gained from access to common land, mobilisation of kinship support, resorting to crime, and other marginal resources could prop up struggling households. The essays attempt to explain how and when the poor secured access to these makeshifts and suggest how the balance of these strategies might change over time or be modified by gender, life-cycle and geography. This book represents the single most significant attempt in print to supply the English 'economy of makeshifts' with a solid, empirical basis and to advance the concept of makeshifts from a vague but convenient label to a more precise yet inclusive definition.

Yet the intersection of gender and immigration has received little attention in contemporary social science literature and immigration research. This book brings together some of the best work in this area, including essays by pioneers who have logged nearly two decades in the field of gender and immigration, and new empirical work by both young scholars and well-es

Abstract: How did grammatical gender in English get replaced by a system dependent on natural gender? How is this related to 'irregular agreement' (she for ships) and 'sexist' language use (generic he) in Modern English? This study, based on extensive corpus data, offers an important historical perspective on these controversial questions

Abstract: The Anthropology of Religious Conversion paints a picture of conversion far more complex than its customary image in anthropology and religious studies. Conversion is very seldom simply a sudden moment of insight or inspiration; it is a change both of individual consciousness and of social belonging, of mental attitude and of physical experience, whose unfolding depends both on its cultural setting and on the distinct individuals who undergo it. The book explores religious conversion in a variety of cultural settings and considers how anthropological approaches can help us understand the pheno

Note: Includes bibliographical references and index , Biographical note: Dr. Paul L. Redditt is professor for the Old Testament at Georgetown College, Kentucky/USA. Dr. Aaron Schart is professor for Old und New Testament at the University of Essen , Main description: For some years the view has become established that the Book of the Twelve is a systematically structured literary unity. The papers were written between 1999 and 2002 under the aegis of the Society of Biblical Literature's Working Group on The Formation of the Book of the Twelve , Main description: Seit einigen Jahren hat sich die Auffassung durchgesetzt, dass das Zwölfprophetenbuch eine planvoll gestaltete literarische Großeinheit ist. Die Beiträge entstanden 1999-2002 im Rahmen der Arbeitsgruppe The Formation of the Book of the Twelve der Society of Biblical Literature , Review text: "The papers in this book are of highest academic quality, and they are essential reading for a scholar interested in doing serious work on the Minor Prophets. This book is highly recommended."Kevin Mellish in: Religious Studies Review 4/2007 "Der Sammelband leistet einen wertvollen Beitrag zur Forschung. Die Vielfalt der behandelten Themen samt den sich ergebenden Querbeziehungen zwischen Artikeln mit unterschiedlicher hermeneutischer und/oder methodischer Grundausrichtung kann zu einer Fülle von neuen Fragen und Fragestellungen anregen."Ruth Scoralick in: Biblische Zeitschrift 1/2005

The implications of the book's ideas are deep and extensive' Julia Guivant, University of Florianopolis, Brazil Something is wrong with our agricultural and food systems. Despite great progress in increasing productivity in recent decades, hundreds of millions of people remain hungry and malnourished, and further millions suffer for eating too much food or the wrong sort. Agri-Culture envisages the expansion of a new form of food production and consumption founded on more ecological principles and in harmony with the cultures, knowledges and collective capacities of the producers themselves. It draws on many stories of successful agricultural transformation in developing and industrialized countries, but with a warning that true prosperity will depend on the radical reform of the institutions and policies that control global food futures, and fundamental changes in the way we think. The time has come for the next agricultural revolution.

Abstract: For many, Johannesburg resembles the imagined spectre of the urban future. Global anxieties about catastrophic urban explosion, social fracture, environmental degradation, escalating crime and violence, and rampant consumerism alongside grinding poverty, are projected onto this city as a microcosm of things to come. Decision-makers in cities worldwide have attempted to balance harsh fiscal and administrative realities with growing demands for political, economic and social justice. This book investigates pragmatic approaches to urban economic development, service delivery, spatial restructuring, environmental sustainability and institutional reform in Johannesburg. It explores the conditions and processes that are determining the city's transformation into a cosmopolitan metropole and magnet for the continent.

Abstract: Language in South Africa (LiSA) debates the role of language and language planning in the reconstruction, development and transformation of post-apartheid democratic South Africa. The 1996 constitution of South Africa is founded on the political philosophy of pluralism and is directed at promoting democratic values, equity and non-discrimination, human rights, national unity and the development of all the country's communities. The question asked in LiSA is how language planning can contribute towards the attainment of these national ideals. Set against the language political realities of the

Abstract: "In this study, Nancy Henry introduces a new set of facts that place George Eliot's life and work within the contexts of mid nineteenth-century British colonialism and imperialism. Henry examines Eliot's roles as an investor in colonial stocks, a parent to emigrant sons, and a reader of colonial literature. She highlights the importance of these contexts to our understanding of both Eliot's fiction and her situation within Victorian culture. Henry argues that Eliot's decision to represent the empire only as it infiltrated the imaginations and domestic lives of her characters illuminates the nature of her realism. The book also re-examines the assumptions of post-colonial criticism about Victorian fiction and its relation to empire."--Jacket

Abstract: Once viewed solely in relation to the history of feminism, Mary Wollstonecraft is now recognised as a writer of formidable talent across a range of genres, including journalism, letters and travel writing. This is the first collected volume to address all aspects of Wollstonecraft's momentous and tragically brief career, paying attention not only to A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, but also to the full range of her work. A chronology and bibliography offer further essential information for scholars and students of this remarkable writer

Abstract: Appelbaum surveys literature from 1603 to the 1660s and shows how its ideal politics were engaged in the reality of political and social struggle. He also shows how self-defeating the exercise could be. In an era of political and religious conflict, writers asserted themselves as the authors of social and political ideals. But they also constructed systems in which the assertion of utopian mastery would have no place, and an ideal politics could no longer be imagined. This study will interest political and cultural historians as well as literary critics

Abstract: Britain's role in the First World War has been portrayed mainly through literature, films and plays, in most cases with a marked un-historical, anti-war spirit. This book follows the controversy from 1918 to the present, and concludes that historians are finally permitting the War to be placed in proper perspective

Abstract: "Greg Clingham examines Johnson's writing, including his biographical writing, as it intersects with eighteenth-century thought on literature, history, fiction, and law, and in its subsequent compatibility with, and resistance to, modern theory. Clingham's widely researched study provides an account of Johnson's intellectual positions that incorporates the challenges they pose to recent critical theory, and argues for Johnson's inclusion in a new theorization of terms such as "authority," "nature," and "memory.""--Jacket
