Abstract: In the first study of the kind, Susan Blackburn examines how Indonesian women have engaged with the state since they began to organise a century ago. Voices from the women's movement resound in these pages, posing demands such as education for girls and reform of marriage laws. The state, for its part, is shown attempting to control women. The book investigates the outcomes of these mutual claims, and the power of the state and the women's movement in improving women's lives. It also questions the effects on women of recent changes to the state, such as Indonesia's transition to democracy and the election of its first female president. The wider context is important. On some issues, like reproductive health, international institutions have been influential, and as the largest Islamic society in the world, Indonesia offers special insights into the role of religion in shaping relations between women and the state.--Publisher description

Abstract: This book accounts for the structural differences between 'non-creole' language varieties - such as African-American English - and their European source languages. John Holm argues that these differences resulted from 'partial restructuring', whereby some of the source languages' features were retained, but many features from the non-native speakers' language were also introduced

Abstract: This book explores major shifts and reorientations in the recent history of American Anthropology, reflecting the author's vision of what anthropology is and what it has the potential to become. The book engages three fundamental intellectual-political challenges that American anthropology is destined to confront (or at its peril, avoid): becoming more self-reflexive, achieving theoretical and methodological holism, and defense of universal human rights

Abstract: The "Troubles" in Northern Ireland have endured for so long that eventually the abnormal has become normal. This volume examines the processes by which society has become gradually dehumanised, and how the inhuman conditions, under which people have been forced to live so long, have come about. The authors seek to understand this situation and build upon the current literature, using their different personal and professional backgrounds to great effect to create a wider perspective. They describe the political background, the framework of Kleinian psychoanalysis, and then bring the two together

Abstract: Modernisation in Africa has created new freedoms but also new problems. Multiparty democracy, privitisation and structural change have not always created stable and prosperous communities as hoped, and violence continues to be endemic in amny areas of African life - from civil war and political strife to urban, class, ethnic and gender violence. Violence and Belonging explores the crucial, formative role of violence in shaping people's ideas of who they are in uncertain postcolonial contexts. Focusing on fieldwork from across the continent, it asks how everyday violence ties in with wider poli

Abstract: Welches politische System bietet langfristig Frieden, Gerechtigkeit und Humanität?

Abstract: Since its inception, the United States has defined itself as a nation of immigrants and a land of religious freedom. But following September 11, 2001 American openness to immigrants and openness to other beliefs have come into question. In a timely manner, Religion and Immigration provides comparative perspectives on Protestants, Catholics, Muslims and Jews entering the American scene. Will Muslims seek and receive inclusion in ways similar to Catholics and Jews generations before? How will new immigrant populations influence and be influenced by current religious communities? DDC: 303.4834

Abstract: CNN called Richard Thieme a member of the cyber avant-garde. Digital Delirium named him one of the most creative minds of the digital generation. Now Richard Thieme's wisdom on the social and cultural dimensions of technology is available in a single volume. Islands in the Clickstream ranges beyond the impact of technology to spirituality, psychological insight, and social commentary. Now that people are used to living in virtual worlds and move easily between online and offline worlds, they want to connect that experience to the deeper issues of our lives, including spiritual issues. Some examples include Dreams Engineers Have, The Crazy Lady on the Treadmill, and Whistleblowers and Team Players. These essays raise serious questions for thoughtful readers. They have attracted favorable commentary from around the world and a fanatic, almost rabid fan base. * This author has become an extremely popular and highly visible talking head. He is a rare personality in the otherwise bland world of technology commentators. * The book leverages the loyalty of his audience in the same way Bill O'Reilly's The O'Reilly Factor and Al Franken's Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them do. * The book is an easy read intended to provoke thought, discussion and disagreement.

Brief biographies of influential theorists demonstrate how ideas are embodied and personified. This volume is highly useful for courses in human geography, the history and

Abstract: The value of multi-disciplinary research lies in the exchange of ideas and methods across the traditional boundaries between areas of study. It could be argued that many of the advances in science and engineering take place because the ideas, methods and the tools of thought from one discipline become re-applied in another. The topic of "the visual" has become increasingly important as advances in technology have led to multi-media and multi-modal representations, and extended the range and scope of visual representation and interpretation in our lives. Under this broad heading there are many different perspectives and approaches, from across the entire spectrum of human knowledge and activity. The editors and authors of this book aim to break down cross-disciplinary barriers, by bringing together people working in a wide variety of disciplines where visual representations and interpretations are exploited. Contributions come from researchers actively investigating visual representations and interpretations in a wide variety of areas, including art history, biology, clinical science, cognitive science, computer science, design, engineering, linguistics, mathematics, philosophy, physics, psychology, and sociology. The book provides a forum for wide-ranging and multi-disciplinary contributions on visual representations and interpretations. * Contributors include researchers actively investigating visual representations and interpretations * Content spans a wide variety of areas including but not limited to biology, sociology, and computer science * Discusses how new technology has affected "the visual" representation of information

Abstract: Main description: Recent research has led to a weakening of the two classical hypotheses on the story of David's rise and a succession narrative. Instead, attention has focussed on the texts in II Samuel 1-5, which are seen as being of crucial importance for the literary genesis of the story of David. The present study reveals a first continuous account from before the time of exile, which was produced in the 7th century BC. Thus it explains David's double kingship of Israel and Juda as a proto-deuteronomistic foundation narrative from the late Age of Kings. The study closes with a sketch of the editorial history of the David narratives in II Samuel and a revision of the historical records.

Abstract: Review quote: 2004-09-01, Das Magazin, "Ein Grundlagenwerk."
Was aber verbirgt sich hinter all diesen Begriffen?
