    Abstract: Die ‚Integrationsdebatte‘ nach Thilo Sarrazins Buch ‚Deutschland schafft sich ab‘ offenbarte ein Paradox – eine wachsende Akzeptanz des kulturellen Pluralismus, besonders unter jüngeren Menschen, und zugleich massive kulturelle Ressentiments in der Einwanderungsgesellschaft. Der renommierte Migrationsforscher und Politikberater Klaus J. Bade beleuchtet Ursachen, Hintergründe und bedrohliche Folgen dieser paradoxen Spannung. Ihr Ergebnis ist eine gefährliche Ersatzdebatte anstelle der verdrängten Diskussion um die neue Identität in der Einwanderungsgesellschaft. Das Buch beschreibt diese Ersatzdebatte als ‚negative Integration‘: die Selbstvergewisserung der Mehrheit durch die Ausgrenzung einer großen – muslimischen – Minderheit. Die Politik verkennt die Brisanz dieser negativen Integration, solange sie ‚Integrationspolitik‘ nicht als Gesellschaftspolitik für alle versteht. Mit scharfem Blick identifiziert Bade Zusammenhänge von Wortgewalt und Tatgewalt am Beispiel antimultikulturell und antiislamisch motivierter Bluttaten aus jüngster Zeit: dem Breivik-Massaker in Norwegen und den Serienmorden des Nationalsozialistischen Untergrunds (NSU) in Deutschland. Mit der Zunahme von Integrationserfolgen und der pragmatischen Akzeptanz kultureller Vielfalt sind in Deutschland auch aus kultureller Angst geborene fremdenfeindliche Abwehrhaltungen gewachsen, vor allem gegenüber dem Schreckgespenst Islam. Im Umgang mit den Themen Einwanderung, Integration und Islam ist ein kritischer Punkt erreicht.

    Abstract: This collection critically examines "tolerance," "secularism," and respect for religious "diversity" within a social and political system dominated by Sufi brotherhoods. Through a detailed analysis of Senegal's political economy, essays trace the genealogy and dynamic exchange among these concepts while investigating public spaces and political processes and their reciprocal engagement with the state, Sunni reformist and radical groups, and non-religious organizations. The anthology provides a rich and nuanced historical ethnography of the formation of Senegalese democracy, illuminating the complex trajectory of the Senegalese state and reflecting on similar postcolonial societies. Offering rare perspectives on the country's "successes" since liberation, the volume identifies the role of religion, gender, culture, ethnicity, globalization, politics, and migration in the reconfiguration of the state and society, and it makes an important contribution to democratization theory, Islamic studies, and African studies

    Abstract: Conspicuously, Islam has become a key concern in most European societies with respect to issues of immigration, integration, identity, values and inland security. As the mere presence of Muslim minorities fails to explain these debates convincingly, new questions need to be asked: How did »Islam« become a topic? Who takes part in the debates? How do these debates influence both individual as well as collective »self-images« and »image of others«? Introducing Switzerland as an under-researched object of study to the academic discourse on Islam in Europe, this volume offers a fresh perspective on the objective by putting recent case studies from diverse national contexts into comparative perspective.

    Abstract: Since the 1990s, there has been a growing concern about the resurgence of extremist and radical movements in the Western world. Although a variety of challenges to the liberal democratic order have emerged, the main focus of concern among academics, policy-makers and practitioners within Europe and beyond has been on the growth and activities of Islamists and to a lesser extent the extreme right. However, these forms of extremism are seldom placed alongside each other, and in a manner that is sensitive to both the causes and consequences of extremist mobilization. This book presents new empirical research on the causes of these two 'new' extremisms in 21st Century Britain and the appropriate responses to it by both the state and civil society. Both forms of extremism pose vital questions for those concerned with the development of a more cohesive and stable society.     Abstract: Bei der dieser Studie handelt es sich um eine sozialwissenschaftliche Untersuchung der ersten Deutschen Islam Konferenz (DIK). Ausgangspunkt der Analyse ist die Beobachtung, dass sich der deutsche Integrationsdiskurs trotz des seit 2006 intensivierten Dialogs zwischen Staat und muslimischen Repräsentanten weiterhin als kontrovers darstellt und eine Reihe von integrationspolitischen Problemfeldern ungelöst sind. Vor diesem Hintergrund untersucht die Abhandlung die Funktion und Reichweite der DIK und ihre Implikationen für die Integrationspolitik in Deutschland. Die Betrachtung nimmt außerdem eine Einordnung der Islam Konferenz in die Integrationspolitik deutscher Bundesregierungen im Zeitraum von 1998 bis 2009 vor und ermöglicht es damit nicht nur, spezifische Policy-Charakteristika der Einrichtung zu identifizieren, sondern ebenso ihre Rolle im politischen Gesamtkontext unter Einbeziehung der islamistischen Terroranschläge vom 11. September 2001 zu erfassen. Die Betrachtung der ersten Islam Konferenz ist methodisch als quantitative Einzel-fallstudie konzipiert und hat mehrere Adressaten: die politischen Akteure, die autochthone deutsche Gesellschaft als auch die muslimische Gemeinschaft. Als Analysegrundlage fungieren neben einer detaillierten Dokumentenanalyse zwölf Expertenbefragungen mit Teil-nehmern und Beobachtern der DIK. Für die Untersuchung und Bewertung des Konferenzre-sultate kommen die Auswertungskategorien des akteurzentrierten Institutionalismus zum Einsatz, der den theoretisch-analytischen Bezugsrahmen der Studie bildet. Die zentralen Ergebnisse und Befunde der Untersuchung werden in Form von sieben zusammenfassenden Thesen dargestellt. Hierbei wird ein durchweg ambivalentes Bild des dreijährigen Dialogprozesses gezeichnet.
    Abstract: The present study is a social science-focussed research paper on the first German Islam Conference (DIK). The starting point of the analysis is the observation that the recent German integration discourse is still controversial and that a series of integration problems remain unresolved – despite the intensified dialogue between the national government and Muslim representatives. Against this background, the study analyses the function and scope of the DIK as well as its implications on Germany''s integration policy. The investigation reviews the Islam Conference in the context of the integration policy of the German Federal government in the period from 1998 to 2009, identifies specific policy characteristics of the institution, and evaluates the conference within the overall political context, including the Islamist terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001. Form a methodical point of view, this analysation of the first Islam Conference is considered a quantitative individual case study addressed towards: the political actors, the autochthonous German society as well as towards the Muslim community. Apart from a detailed document analysis, the study is based upon twelve expert interviews among DIK participants and observers. For researching and evaluating the conference’s results, the evaluation categories of actor-centered institutionalism are used, which provides the theoretical and analytical framework of the study. The study''s crucial results and findings are represented in the form of seven summarizing theses. Here, a consistently ambivalent picture of the three-year dialogue process is drawn.

    Abstract: Der Kampf der Kulturen sähe so aus: die westlichen Demokratien auf der einen, der Islam auf der anderen Seite. Zwei Welten, gefangen in ihren historischen, kulturellen und religiösen Unterschieden und daher zum Konflikt verurteilt.« Auf der Grundlage dieses dualistischen Denkens, so Todorov, gibt es keinen Raum für Dialog. Die Folge: Unnachgiebigkeit, ja, sogar Krieg mit allen Mitteln. Die Demokratie ist zu verteidigen, aber Angst und Ressentiment führen schnell zu Fehlreaktionen. Der Zweck heiligt nicht immer die Mittel, manchmal so lehrt die Geschichte kann das Mittel schlimmer sein als die Krankheit. In seinen Reflexionen, die Jahrhunderte europäischer Geschichte einbeziehen, untersucht Todorov die Begriffe Barbarei und Zivilisation, Kultur und kollektive Identität, um jene Konflikte zu interpretieren, die heute zwischen den westlichen Ländern und dem Rest der Welt bestehen. Anhand von aktuellen Kontroversen illustriert und kommentiert Todorov alarmierende Anzeichen für Zivilisationsverluste und plädiert für eine kulturtheoretisch anspruchsvollere Deutung dieser Konfliktlagen. Kulturelle Vielfalt und universal gültige zivilisatorische Werte sind kein Widerspruch, auch wenn der Siegeszug der geschichtsphilosophischen Denkfigur, die Samuel Huntington auf die Formel vom »Kampf der Kulturen« gebracht hat, ein manichäisches Weltbild zu zementieren versucht. Der »Krieg gegen den Terror« als Reaktion auf dieses Weltbild führt zu einer bedenklichen Verwischung von Zielen und Mitteln, die am Ende sogar die Folter im Westen wieder salonfähig macht. Und so besteht die Gefahr, aus Angst vor den Barbaren selbst zu Barbaren zu werden. Es gilt zu erkennen, dass jegliche Identität grundlegend plurikulturell konstruiert, dass Kulturen keine Essenzen, sondern Konstruktionen mit bestimmten Funktionen sind, denen der Mensch nicht schicksalhaft ausgeliefert ist.
