Abstract: "The Struggle for Jerusalem's Holy Places investigates the role of architecture and urban identity in relation to the political economy of the city and its wider state context seen through the lens of the holy places. Reflecting the broad disciplinary backgrounds of the authors, this book provides perspectives from architecture, urbanism, and politics, and provides in-depth investigations of historical, ethnographic and policy-related case studies. The research is substantiated by fieldwork carried out in Jerusalem over the past ten years as part of the ESRC Large Grants project 'Conflict in Cities'. By analysing new dynamics of radicalisation through land seizure, the politicisation of parklands and tourism, the strategic manipulation of archaeological and historical narratives and material culture, and through examination of general appropriation of Jerusalem's varied rituals, memories and symbolism for factional uses, the book reveals how possibilities of co- existence are seriously threatened in Jerusalem. Shedding new light on the key role played by everyday urban life and its spatial settings for any future political agreements about the city and its religious sites, this book is a useful reference work for students and scholars of Middle East Studies, Architecture, Religion and Urban Studies"--

Abstract: "Developing Equitable Education Systems This book focuses on the need to develop education systems that are able to overcome the impact of social disadvantage. It provides a practical base for educators and practitioners to develop their individual ways of working and to create a sense of equity within their particular school context. As Government policy moves to extend the diversity of provision within school systems, this book encourages a whole school reform that will avoid the fragmentation of school systems, avoiding the creation of a situation whereby the improvement of one school leads to a decline in the performance of others. At an important time in global, political and educational change, this informative book will be an invaluable aid to anyone researching or working with education policy and politics. It will greatly interest anyone involved with the sociology of education as well as those professionals in organizations and companies guiding the future of education"-- Provided by publisher
Abstract: "This book focuses on the need to develop education systems that are able to overcome the impact of social disadvantage. It asks why, despite years of reform the poorest children are still not well served by the education system, and by and large attend the lowest-performing schools. Working with a community of schools in one Local Education Authority in England over four years, this team of high-profile, internationally renowned researchers throws light on the challenges of driving the school system into a more equitable direction.Throughout this book, the advantages of an inquiry based approach to educational systems are explored. Whilst this has been found to be effective in individual schools, its use as a strategy for system change is problematic within current policy contexts. With this in mind, the authors analyse the nature of these difficulties in order to formulate proposals for moving education systems in a more equitable direction. "Developing Equitable Education Systems" focuses on the idea that a sense of fairness, however ill-defined, is a powerful starting point for schools to enquire into their own practice and provision. It provides a practical base for educators and practitioners to develop their individual ways of working and to create a sense of equity within their particular school context. Abstract: "Education policy is being reformed and re-worked on a global scale. Policies are flowing and converging to produce a singular vision of best practice based on the methods and tenets of the neo-liberal imaginary. Philanthropy, business and the governments are coming together in new networks and sites of policy outside of the framework of the nation state. This book is a first step in recording, mapping and making sense of the most important aspects of these new relations and dynamics of policy.Using the approach of policy sociology and the methods of social network analysis, Stephen Ball explores the policy activities of edu-businesses, neo-liberal advocacy networks and policy entrepreneurs, and of social enterprises and new philanthropy. He also addresses the ways in which education and education policy itself are now being exported and bought and sold as profitable commodities and how entrenched problems of educational development and educational quality and access are now being addressed through market solutions. That is, by the involvement of private providers in the delivery of educational services, both independently and on behalf of the state. Ball argues that significant changes are taking place in how policy and public services get done and suggests that the sum of these changes indicates the beginning of the end of state education in its welfare form. A set of new, blurred relationships and interests within policy and within state education are outlined. This book will be of interest to practising policy analysts and theorists and will be a learning resource for policy studies students: the issues and examples are topical; the literature employed is diverse and up-to-date; and the analysis engages with cutting-edge debates in political science, sociology, social policy and social geography. Abstract: "Do private and philanthropic solutions to the problems of education signal the end of state education in its 'welfare' form? Education policy is being reformed and re-worked on a global scale. Policies are flowing and converging to produce a singular vision of 'best practice' based on the methods and tenets of the 'neo-liberal imaginary'. Philanthropy, business and the governments are coming together in new networks and sites of policy outside of the framework of the nation state. This book is a first step in recording, mapping and making sense of the most important aspects of these new relations and dynamics of policy. Using the approach of 'policy sociology' and the methods of social network analysis the book explores the policy activities of edu-businesses, neo-liberal advocacy networks and policy entrepreneurs, and of social enterprises and 'new' philanthropy. It also addresses the ways in which education and education policy itself are now being exported and bought and sold as profitable commodities and how entrenched problems of educational development and educational quality and access are now being addressed through 'market solutions'. That is, by the involvement of private providers in the delivery of educational services, both independently and on behalf of the state. Universities, schools and education services are being acquired as assets by private equity companies. Private storefront schools are being set-up by local entrepreneurs and through franchising arrangements, funded through microloans"--

Abstract: "This outstanding collection, written by sophisticated and engaged Arab architects/urbanists, is a stunning sequel to 'Planning Middle Eastern Cities' (2004) Like its predecessor, it does three things: effectively demolishes the monopoly 'orientalists' had over the topic; integrates grounded Arab scholarship with mainstream 'western' critical urban theory; and, by detailing the diverse ways Arab cities are responding to globalization, challenges oversimplified debates on 'The Global City'. Studies of Arab/Islamic cities used to be the province of 'outsiders' who not only prematurely generalized to a genre, but encapsulated it in timelessness. In contrast, the case studies included in the earlier volume (Dubai, Sana'a, Baghdad, Algiers, Tunis, and Cairo), now supplemented in this volume by three older cities (Amman, Beirut, and Rabat) and five newer oil cities (Riyadh, Kuwait City, Manama, Doha and Abu-Dhabi), focus, often critically, on their rapid transformations. Each case study traces its colonial and post-colonial history, the evolution of its distinctive social and physical structures, and its intersection with the region and the world. It pays particular attention to, inter alia, the effects of recent wars, migration patterns, petroleum prices, noting the increased role of 'rulers' in city planning/real estate investment both within and between Arab countries. Each traces the increased interactions between multinational firms and local developers as they strategize and compete to elevate themselves to global city status. Neoliberalism and State-sponsored advanced capitalism are all implicated in the painful task of balancing identity and post-modernity. A must read!" -- Janet Abu-Lughod, Professor Emerita, Northwestern University and The Graduate Faculty, New School for Social Research, USA Winner of The International Planning History Society (IPHS) Book Prize
