In this book, Jocelyne Cesari investigates the relationship between modernization, politics, and Islam in Muslim-majority countries such as Egypt, Iraq, Pakistan, Tunisia, and Turkey - countries that were founded by secular rulers and have since undergone secularized politics. Cesari argues that nation-building processes in these states have not created liberal democracies in the Western mold, but have instead spurred the politicization of Islam by turning it into a modern national ideology. Looking closely at examples of Islamic dominance in political modernization - for example, nationalization of Islamic institutions and personnel under state ministries; reliance on Islamic references in political discourse, religiously motivated social unrest, or violence; and internationalization of Islam-aligned political movements or conflicts - this study provides a unique overview of the historical and political developments from the end of World War II to the Arab Spring that have made Islam the dominant force in the construction of the modern states, and discusses Islam's impact on emerging democracies in the contemporary Middle East"--

    Abstract: "In recent years bitter controversies have erupted across Europe and the Middle East about women's veiling, and especially their wearing of the face-veil or niqab. Yet the deeper issues contained within these controversies--secularism versus religious belief, individual freedom versus social or family coercion, identity versus integration--are not new but are strikingly prefigured by earlier conflicts. This book examines the state-sponsored anti-veiling campaigns which swept across wide swathes of the Muslim world in the interwar period, especially in Turkey and the Balkans, Iran, Afghanistan and the Soviet republics of the Caucasus and Central Asia. It shows how veiling was officially discouraged and ridiculed as backward and, although it was rarely banned, veiling was politicized and turned into a rallying-point for a wider opposition. Asking a number of questions about this earlier anti-veiling discourse and the policies flowing from it, and the reactions which it provoked, the book illuminates and contextualizes contemporary debates about gender, Islam and modernism"--

    Abstract: Die Säkularisierungsthese geht davon aus, dass Modernisierung in ihren unterschiedlichen Facetten zu einem Bedeutungsverlust von Religion und Kirche in der Gegenwart führt. Diese These ist seit 15 Jahren zum Gegenstand kontroverser Diskurse geworden. Während einige Soziologen, Politikwissenschaftler und Historiker an ihren grundlegenden Aussagen festhalten, mehren sich die Stimmen, die die gewachsene massenmediale Sichtbarkeit und die zunehmende politische Relevanz von Religionen anführen, um den in der Säkularisierungsthese unterstellten Zusammenhang zwischen Modernisierung und Säkularisierung in Frage zu stellen. Diese Quellen können wir verstehen, wenn wir an ihre Aussagen nicht mit unserer heutigen Denkweise herangehen, sondern versuchen, sie aus der Perspektive ihrer Entstehungzeit zu erfassen. In diesem Buch haben sich christliche und muslimische Theologinnen und Theologen dem Thema Gewalt in der Bibel und im Koran gestellt. Anhand von Textbeispielen und hermeneutischen Zugangsweisen werden die Probleme angesprochen und Möglichkeiten zum Verständnis und zur Auslegung erörtert.

    Abstract: In den bisherigen Forschungen zu »muslimischen« Denkerinnen und Denkern sind die dichotomisch verwendeten Begriffe »Moderne« und »Islam« zentral. Dabei wird »Moderne« meist mit »westlich«, »säkular«, »reformerisch« und neuerdings »global« gleichgesetzt - und »Islam« mit »orientalisch«, »religiös«, »traditionell« und »partikular«.Abbas Poya nimmt einen Wechsel der »Erzählperspektive« vor. Anhand von vier gegenwärtig wichtigen iranischen Autoren - Al-e Ahmad, Shari'ati, Sorush und Malekyan - untersucht er den Transformationsprozess in den heutigen islamisch-intellektuellen Diskursen im Lichte global vorherrschender postkolonialer Zustände und zeigt, dass ihre Gedankengänge durch die sogenannten islamischen/orientalischen Ideen ebenso geformt sind wie durch die vermeintlich säkularen/westlichen Vorstellungen
    Abstract: In previous research on »Muslim« thinkers and philosophers, the dichotomously applied terms »modern« and »Islam« are central. Therein, »modern« is mostly equated with »Western«, »secular«, »reformist«, and, most recently, »global«, whereas »Islam« is equated with »oriental«, »religious«, »traditional«, and »particular«.Abbas Poya breaks from the »narrative perspective«: On the basis of four current and important Iranian writers - Al-e Ahmad, Shari'ati, Sorush, and Malekyan - he examines the transformation process in today's Islamic intellectual discourses in the light of global dominant post-colonial conditions and shows that the thought processes are shaped by so-called Islamic/oriental ideas as well as by supposed secular/western ideas

    Abstract: This book responds to the often loud debates about the place of Muslims in Western Europe by proposing an analysis based in institutions, including schools, courts, hospitals, the military, electoral politics, the labor market, and civic education courses. The contributors consider the way people draw on practical schemas regarding others in their midst who are often categorized as Muslims. Chapters based on fieldwork and policy analysis across several countries examine how people interact in their everyday work lives, where they construct moral boundaries, and how they formulate policies concerning tolerable diversity, immigration, discrimination, and political representation. Rather than assuming that each country has its own national ideology that explains such interactions, contributors trace diverse pathways along which institutions complicate or disrupt allegedly consistent national ideologies. These studies shed light on how Muslims encounter particular faces and facets of the state as they go about their lives, seeking help and legitimacy as new citizens of a fast-changing Europe.

In einer eindringlichen Auseinandersetzung mit Hannah Arendt, Emmanuel Lévinas, Walter Benjamin, Primo Levi und den Palästinensern Edward Said und Mahmoud Darwish entwickelt sie eine neue jüdische Ethik, die sich gegen die von Israel ausgeübte und vom Zionismus legitimierte staatliche Gewalt sowie Israels koloniale Unterdrückung von Bevölkerungsgruppen wendet. Diese Ethik steht ein für die Rechte der Unterdrückten, für die Anerkennung des Anderen und die Infragestellung der jüdischen Souveränität als alleinigem Bezugsrahmen der israelischen Staatsraison. Aus der Erfahrung von Diaspora und Pluralität heraus plädiert Butler für einen Staat, in dem Israelis und Palästinenser, Juden und Nichtjuden gleichberechtigt zusammenleben.     Abstract: In these conference proceedings particular attention is paid to the performance of burials and burial rites between 1300 and 750 BC. A change in burial customs took place in large parts of central Europe during the 13th century BC. The dead were no longer buried in inhumation graves - as was customary until then - but were burned and laid to rest in urns. This transformation of burial customs is probably connected to far reaching changes in society and religious beliefs
    Abstract: In dem vorliegenden Kongressband werden Bestattung und Ritual in der Region zwischen Mitteleuropa und Griechenland zwischen 1300 und 750 v. Chr. besondere Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt. Im 13. Jahrhundert v. Chr. fand in weiten Teilen Mitteleuropas eine radikale Veränderung der Grabsitten statt. Die Toten wurden nicht mehr, wie bis dahin üblich, in Körpergräbern bestattet, sondern verbrannt und in Urnen beigesetzt. Es ist wahrscheinlich, dass sich hinter dem Wandel des Begräbnisrituals weitreichende Veränderungen der Gesellschaft und der religiösen Vorstellungen verbergen

    Abstract: Die ‚Integrationsdebatte‘ nach Thilo Sarrazins Buch ‚Deutschland schafft sich ab‘ offenbarte ein Paradox – eine wachsende Akzeptanz des kulturellen Pluralismus, besonders unter jüngeren Menschen, und zugleich massive kulturelle Ressentiments in der Einwanderungsgesellschaft. Der renommierte Migrationsforscher und Politikberater Klaus J. Bade beleuchtet Ursachen, Hintergründe und bedrohliche Folgen dieser paradoxen Spannung. Ihr Ergebnis ist eine gefährliche Ersatzdebatte anstelle der verdrängten Diskussion um die neue Identität in der Einwanderungsgesellschaft. Das Buch beschreibt diese Ersatzdebatte als ‚negative Integration‘: die Selbstvergewisserung der Mehrheit durch die Ausgrenzung einer großen – muslimischen – Minderheit. Die Politik verkennt die Brisanz dieser negativen Integration, solange sie ‚Integrationspolitik‘ nicht als Gesellschaftspolitik für alle versteht. Mit scharfem Blick identifiziert Bade Zusammenhänge von Wortgewalt und Tatgewalt am Beispiel antimultikulturell und antiislamisch motivierter Bluttaten aus jüngster Zeit: dem Breivik-Massaker in Norwegen und den Serienmorden des Nationalsozialistischen Untergrunds (NSU) in Deutschland. Mit der Zunahme von Integrationserfolgen und der pragmatischen Akzeptanz kultureller Vielfalt sind in Deutschland auch aus kultureller Angst geborene fremdenfeindliche Abwehrhaltungen gewachsen, vor allem gegenüber dem Schreckgespenst Islam. Im Umgang mit den Themen Einwanderung, Integration und Islam ist ein kritischer Punkt erreicht.
