    Abstract: When the Chinese communists came to power in 1949, they promised to 'turn society upside down'. Efforts to build a communist society created hopes and dreams, coupled with fear and disillusionment. The Chinese people made great efforts towards modernization and social change in this period of transition, but they also experienced traumatic setbacks. Covering the period 1949 to 1976 and then tracing the legacy of the Mao era through the 1980s, Felix Wemheuer focuses on questions of class, gender, ethnicity, and the urban-rural divide in this new social history of Maoist China. He analyzes the experiences of a range of social groups under Communist rule - workers, peasants, local cadres, intellectuals, 'ethnic minorities', the old elites, men and women. To understand this tumultuous period, he argues, we must recognize the many complex challenges facing the People's Republic. But we must not lose sight of the human suffering and political terror that, for many now ageing quietly across China, remain the period's abiding memory.

    Abstract: This interdisciplinary study explores how classical ideals of generosity influenced the writing and practice of gift giving in medieval Europe. In assuming that medieval gift giving was shaped by oral 'folk models', historians have traditionally followed in the footsteps of social anthropologists and sociologists such as Marcel Mauss and Pierre Bourdieu. This first in-depth investigation into the influence of the classical ideals of generosity and gift giving in medieval Europe reveals to the contrary how historians have underestimated the impact of classical literature and philosophy on medieval culture and ritual. Focusing on the idea of the gift expounded in the classical texts read most widely in the Middle Ages, including Seneca the Younger's De beneficiis and Cicero's De officiis, Lars Kjær investigates how these ideas were received, adapted and utilised by medieval writers across a range of genres, and how they influenced the practice of generosity

Von der aktiven Befürwortung über die stille Akzeptanz bis hin zum Widerstand einte die geteilte deutsche Gesellschaft, dass sie sich ihrer Existenz nicht entziehen konnte. Spätestens mit dem Brexit und der Wahl Donald Trumps folgte die schmerzhafte Einsicht, dass es sich dabei um Illusionen gehandelt hatte. Tatsächlich wird erst jetzt das Ausmaß des Strukturwandels der Gesellschaft sichtbar: Die alte industrielle Moderne ist von einer Spätmoderne abgelöst worden, die von neuen Polarisierungen und Paradoxien geprägt ist - Fortschritt und Unbehagen liegen dicht beieinander.     Abstract: Border regions are often considered to be the neglected margins. In this book, Paul Nugent argues that through a comparison of the Senegambia and the trans-Volta (Ghana/Togo), we can see that the geographical margins have shaped notional centres at least as much as the reverse. Through a study of three centuries of history, this book demonstrates that states were forged through an extended process of converting a topography of settled states and slaving frontiers into colonial borders. It argues that post-colonial states and larger social contracts have been configured very differently as a consequence. It underscores the impact on regional dynamics and the phenomenon of peripheral urbanism. Nugent also addresses the manner in which a variegated sense of community has been forged amongst Mandinka, Jola, Ewe and Agotime populations who have both shaped and been shaped by the border. This is an exercise in reciprocal comparison and shuttles between scales, from the local and the particular to the national and the regional.

    Abstract: This is the story of how women in France and Britain between 1915 and 1933 appropriated the cultural identity of female war veteran in order to have greater access to public life and a voice in a political climate in which women were rarely heard on the public stage. The 'veterans' covered by this history include former nurses, charity workers, secret service agents and members of resistance networks in occupied territory, as well as members of the British auxiliary corps. What unites these women is how they attempted to present themselves as 'female veterans' in order to gain social advantages and give themselves the right to speak about the war and its legacies. Alison S. Fell also considers the limits of the identity of war veteran for women, considering as an example the wartime and post-war experiences of the female industrial workers who led episodes of industrial action

    Abstract: Karen Offen offers a magisterial reconstruction and analysis of the debates around relations between women and men, how they are constructed, and how they should be organized, that raged in France and its French-speaking neighbors from 1870 to 1920. The 'woman question' encompassed subjects from maternity and childbirth, and the upbringing and education of girls to marriage practices and property law, the organization of households, the distribution of work inside and outside the household, intimate sexual relations, religious beliefs and moral concerns, government-sanctioned prostitution, economic and political citizenship, and the politics of population growth. The book shows how the expansion of economic opportunities for women and the drop in the birth rate further exacerbated the debates over their status, roles, and possibilities. With the onset of the First World War, these debates were temporarily placed on hold, but they would be revived by 1916 and gain momentum during France's post-war recovery

    Abstract: In seinem neuen Buch rekonstruiert Axel Honneth die Idee der Anerkennung in der Vielfalt der Bedeutungen, die sie seit Beginn der Moderne in Europa angenommen hat. Mit Blick auf drei wirkmächtige europäische Denktraditionen - die französische, die britische und die deutsche - zeichnet er nach, wie sie aufgrund unterschiedlicher politisch-sozialer Herausforderungen jeweils ganz verschiedene philosophische Interpretationen und gesellschaftspolitische Ausprägungen erfahren hat. Während in Frankreich mit "reconnaissance" die Gefahr des individuellen Selbstverlustes assoziiert wird, gilt der Prozess der "recognition" in Großbritannien als Bedingung der normativen Selbstkontrolle; und hierzulande meint Anerkennung auch die Vollzugsform allen wahren Respekts unter Menschen. Erstaunlich ist, dass keine dieser drei Bedeutungen, deren Wurzeln bis ins 17. Jahrhundert zurückreichen, in der Gegenwart an Einfluss verloren hat.     Abstract: Plague, a devastating and recurring affliction throughout the Renaissance, had a major impact on European life. Not only was pestilence a biological problem, but it was also read as a symptom of spiritual degeneracy and it caused widespread social disorder. Assembling a picture of the complex and sometimes contradictory responses to plague from medical, spiritual and civic perspectives, this book uncovers the place of music - whether regarded as an indispensable medicine or a moral poison that exacerbated outbreaks - in the management of the disease. This original musicological approach further reveals how composers responded, in their works, to the discourses and practices surrounding one of the greatest medical crises in the pre-modern age. Addressing topics such as music as therapy, public rituals and performance and music in religion, the volume also provides detailed musical analysis throughout to illustrate how pestilence affected societal attitudes toward music

    Abstract: This is a revolutionary reinterpretation of the French past from the early fifteenth century to the establishment of the Third Republic, focused on public challenges and defenses of masculine hierarchy in relations between women and men. Karen Offen surveys heated exchanges around women's 'influence'; their exclusion from 'authority'; the increasing prominence of biomedical thinking and population issues; concerns about education, intellect, and the sexual politics of knowledge; and the politics of women's work. Initially, the majority of commentators were literate and influential men. However, as more and more women attained literacy, they too began to analyze their situation in print and to contest men's claims about who women were and should be, and what they should be restrained from doing, and why. As urban print culture exploded and revolutionary ideas of 'equality' fuelled women's claims for emancipation, this question resonated throughout francophone Europe and, ultimately, across the seas

    Abstract: This innovative study of poverty in Independent Ireland between 1920 and 1940 is the first to place the poor at its core by exploring their own words and letters. Written to the Catholic Archbishop of Dublin, their correspondence represents one of the few traces in history of Irish experiences of poverty, and collectively they illuminate the lives of so many during the foundation decades of the Irish state. This book keeps the human element central, so often lost when the framework of history is policy, institutions and legislation. It explores how ideas of charity, faith, gender, character and social status were deployed in these poverty narratives and examines the impact of poverty on the lives of these writers and the survival strategies they employed. Finally, it considers the role of priests in vetting and vouching for the poor and, in so doing, perpetuating the discriminating culture of charity

    Abstract: Following the ICC intervention in 2005, northern Uganda has been at the heart of international justice debates. The emergent controversy, however, missed crucial aspects of Acholi realities: that the primary moral imperative in the wake of wrongdoing was not punishment but, instead, the restoration of social harmony. Drawing upon abundant fieldwork and in-depth interviews with almost 200 women, Holly Porter examines issues surrounding wrongdoing and justice, and sexual violence and rape, among the Acholi people in northern Uganda. This intricate exploration offers evidence of a more complicated and nuanced explanation of rape and its aftermath, suggesting a re-imagining of the meanings of post-atrocity justice, whilst acknowledging the role of sex, power and politics in all sexual experiences between coercion and consent. With its wide investigation of social life in northern Uganda, this provocative study offers vital analysis for those interested in sexual and gender violence, post-conflict reconstruction and human rights

    Abstract: The market for print steadily expanded throughout the eighteenth-century Atlantic world thanks to printers' efforts  to ensure that ordinary people knew how to read and use printed matter. Reading is and was a collection of practices, performed in diverse, but always very specific ways. These practices were spread down the social hierarchy through printed guides. Eve Tavor Bannet explores guides to six manners or methods of reading, each with its own social, economic, commercial, intellectual and pedagogical functions, and each promoting a variety of fragmentary and discontinuous reading practices. The increasingly widespread production of periodicals, pamphlets, prefaces, conduct books, conversation-pieces and fictions, together with schoolbooks designed for adults and children, disseminated all that people of all ages and ranks might need or wish to know about reading, and prepared them for new jobs and roles both in Britain and America.

    Abstract: This is a revolutionary reinterpretation of the French past from the early fifteenth century to the establishment of the Third Republic, focused on public challenges and defenses of masculine hierarchy in relations between women and men. Karen Offen surveys heated exchanges around women's 'influence'; their exclusion from 'authority'; the increasing prominence of biomedical thinking and population issues; concerns about education, intellect, and the sexual politics of knowledge; and the politics of women's work. Initially, the majority of commentators were literate and influential men. However, as more and more women attained literacy, they too began to analyze their situation in print and to contest men's claims about who women were and should be, and what they should be restrained from doing, and why. As urban print culture exploded and revolutionary ideas of 'equality' fuelled women's claims for emancipation, this question resonated throughout francophone Europe and, ultimately, across the seas.

    Abstract: In this book, Hella Eckardt offers new insights into literacy in the Roman world by examining the tools that enabled writing, such as inkwells, styli and tablets. Literacy was an important skill in the ancient world and power could be and often was, exercised through texts. Eckardt explores how writing equipment shaped practices such as posture and handwriting and her careful analysis of burial data shows considerable numbers of women and children interred with writing equipment, notably inkwells, in an effort to display status as well as age and gender. The volume offers a comprehensive review of recent approaches to literacy during Roman antiquity and adds a distinctive material turn to our understanding of this crucial skill and the embodied practices of its use. At the heart of this study lies the nature of the relationship between the material culture of writing and socio-cultural identities in the Roman period

    Abstract: Als 1986 Risikogesellschaft erschien, machte das Ulrich Beck schlagartig berühmt. Der Soziologe wies nicht nur auf die Nebenfolgen der Industriemoderne hin, er betonte zugleich, dass die Welt sich auch dann permanent verändert, wenn wir meinen, einen vorübergehenden Zustand mit Institutionen und Konzepten einfrieren zu können. Mit beispielloser Neugier spürte Beck den Indizien des Wandels nach und öffnete uns mit der Lust an der terminologischen Innovation die Augen für Individualisierung, Globalisierung und die Transformation der Arbeitswelt. Am 1. Januar 2015 verstarb Ulrich Beck überraschend und viel zu früh. Bis zu seinem Tod arbeitete er an einem Buch, das beides ist: Summe und radikale Weiterführung seiner Theorie. Während es früher Fixpunkte gab, an denen wir erkennen konnten, was stabil blieb und was nicht, erleben wir heute eine allumfassende Verwandlung, die uns orientierungslos werden lässt. Die Metamorphose der Welt ist der Versuch, diese Globalisierung des Wandels zu verstehen und hochaktuelle Herausforderungen wie Erderwärmung und Migration auf den Begriff zu bringen.

    Abstract: Das Besondere ist Trumpf, das Einzigartige wird prämiert, eher reizlos ist das Allgemeine und Standardisierte. Der Durchschnittsmensch mit seinem Durchschnittsleben steht unter Konformitätsverdacht. Das neue Maß der Dinge sind die authentischen Subjekte mit originellen Interessen und kuratierter Biografie, aber auch die unverwechselbaren Güter und Events, Communities und Städte. Spätmoderne Gesellschaften feiern das Singuläre. Ausgehend von dieser Diagnose, untersucht Andreas Reckwitz den Prozess der Singularisierung, wie er sich zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts in Ökonomie, Arbeitswelt, digitaler Technologie, Lebensstilen und Politik abspielt. Mit dem Anspruch einer Theorie der Moderne zeigt er, wie eng dieser Prozess mit der Kulturalisierung des Sozialen verwoben ist, welch widersprüchliche Dynamik er aufweist und worin seine Kehrseite besteht. Die Gesellschaft der Singularitäten kennt nämlich nicht nur strahlende Sieger. The book discusses the resourcefulness of languages, both local and global, in view of the ongoing transformation of African societies as much as for economic development. From a novel 'applied African sociolinguistics' perspective it analyses the continuing effects of linguistic imperialism on postcolonial African societies, in particular regarding the educational sector, through imposed hegemonic languages such as Arabic and the ex-colonial languages of European provenance. It offers a broad interdisciplinary scientific approach to the linguistic dimensions of sociocultural modernisation and economic development in Africa, written for both the non-linguistically trained reader as much as for the linguistically trained researcher and language practitioner

    Abstract: Emotions underpin how political communities are formed and function. Nowhere is this more pronounced than in times of trauma. The emotions associated with suffering caused by war, terrorism, natural disasters, famine and poverty can play a pivotal role in shaping communities and orientating their politics. This book investigates how 'affective communities' emerge after trauma. Drawing on several case studies and an unusually broad set of interdisciplinary sources, it examines the role played by representations, from media images to historical narratives and political speeches. Representations of traumatic events are crucial because they generate socially embedded emotional meanings which, in turn, enable direct victims and distant witnesses to share the injury, as well as the associated loss, in a manner that affirms a particular notion of collective identity. While ensuing political orders often re-establish old patterns, traumatic events can also generate new 'emotional cultures' that genuinely transform national and transnational communities.

    Abstract: Wenn Beschleunigung das Problem ist, dann ist Resonanz vielleicht die Lösung. Dies ist, auf die kürzestmögliche Formel gebracht, die Kernthese des neuen Buches von Hartmut Rosa, das als Gründungsdokument einer Soziologie des guten Lebens gelesen werden kann. An seinem Anfang steht die Behauptung, dass sich die Qualität eines menschlichen Lebens nicht in der Währung von Ressourcen, Optionen und Glücksmomenten angeben lässt. Stattdessen müssen wir unseren Blick auf die Beziehung zur Welt richten, die dieses Leben prägt und die dann, wenn sie intakt ist, Ausdruck stabiler Resonanzverhältnisse ist. Um dies zu begründen, präsentiert Rosa zunächst das ganze Spektrum der Formen, in denen wir eine Beziehung zur Welt herstellen, vom Atmen bis hin zu kulturell ausdifferenzierten Weltbildern. Dann wendet er sich den konkreten Erfahrungs- und Handlungssphären zu – etwa Familie und Politik, Arbeit und Sport, Religion und Kunst –, in denen wir spätmodernen Subjekte Resonanz zwar suchen, aber immer seltener finden. Das hat maßgeblich mit der Steigerungslogik der Moderne zu tun, die sowohl Ursache als auch Folge einer gestörten Weltbeziehung ist, und zwar auf individueller wie kollektiver Ebene. Denn auch die großen Krisentendenzen der Gegenwartsgesellschaft – Ökokrise, Demokratiekrise, Psychokrise – lassen sich resonanztheoretisch analysieren, wie Rosa in seiner Soziologie der Weltbeziehung zeigt. Als eine umfassende Rekonstruktion der Moderne in Begriffen ihrer historisch realisierten Resonanzverhältnisse wagt sie den Versuch, den Rahmen für eine erneuerte Kritische Theorie abzustecken. „Warum haben wir immer zu wenig Zeit? Der Beschleunigungskritiker Hartmut Rosa wurde bekannt, weil er wissenschaftlich beschreibt, was viele fühlen. Jetzt hat der Soziologe ein Gegenprogramm zum gehetzten Leben entwickelt“ (Spiegel).
