    Abstract: History has always dealt with people, yet often gazing at the people from the perspectives of the non-people - colonizers, intruders, outsiders and the privileged elite insiders - who seem to have internalized the 'mainstream' perspective framed by the outsiders. In this context a group of scholars working on Darjeeling felt that there was a need for an inclusive people's history of the Darjeeling hills.The present volume tries to fill this gap of the missing voices of the people of the Darjeeling hills and their cultures through re-writing inclusive history of society and culture from 'below', not only by de coding the elements that are treated as tradition, but also the trans formations in the realms of arts and ecology. For, the tribal-scape of the Darjeeling hills is not a static/frozen zone and the people (hence, the geo-space) are in continuous transition from traditional beings towards becoming neo-traditional. Accepting history as constantly 'extra mural' the objectives of the book are to focus on un documented histories related to harmony, intimacy, belongingness and environ mental care and thereby, interact the living with what is often projected as 'dead', by rejecting to abide by any given set of references as the final/'scientific'/authentic and, thereby, opening up with other kinds of historical dialogue with the understated historical items that are accessible in Darjeeling.Taylor & Francis does not sell or distribute the print version of this book in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka

    Abstract: During Israel's military operation in Gaza in the summer of 2014 the commanding officer of the Givati infantry brigade, Col. Ofer Vinter, called on his troops to fight "the terrorists who defame the God of Israel". This unprecedented call for religious war by a senior IDF commander caused an uproar, but it was just one symptom of a profound process of religionization, or de-secularization, that Israeli society has been going through since the turn of the twenty-first century. This book analyses and explains the reasons for the religionization of Israeli society, a process known in Hebrew as hadata. It argues that this process had its origins in the 1967 war, has been accelerating since 2000, and is manifested in a number of key social fields. It further argues that Jewish religion, inseparable from Jewish nationality, was embedded in Zionism from its inception at the end of the 19th Century but was subdued to a certain extent in favour of the national aspect in the interest of building a modern nation-state. In addition to discussing religionization in the military, the educational system, and the media of mass communications, the book includes a major chapter on the religionization of the Israeli visual fine arts field, a topic that has not been researched before now. Through careful examination of religionization, this book sheds light on a major development in Israeli society, which will additionally inform our understanding of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. As such, it is a key resource for students and scholars of Israel Studies, and those interested the relations between religion, politics and nationalism, secularization and new social movements

    Abstract: Do liminal embodied experiences such as illness, death and dying affect literary form? In recent years, the concept of embodiment has been theorized from various perspectives. Gender studies have been concerned with the cultural implications of embodiment, arguing to move away from viewing the body as a prediscursive phenomenon to regarding it as an acculturated body. Age studies have extended this view to the embodied experience of ageing, while drawing attention to the ways in which the ageing body, through its materiality and plasticity, restricts the possibilities of (de)constructing subjectivity. These current debates on embodiment find a strong counterpart in literary representation. The contributions to this anthology investigate how and to what extend physical borderline experiences affect literary form.

    Abstract: "The conception of modernity as a moment of severance from a primitive past runs parallel to the conception of Europe as the 'locus of history.' The essays in this volume contest the temporal and spatial divisions--between Europe and the rest of the world; modernity and tradition; and between European rationality and Asia's excesses--which the conventional narrative of modernity creates. Drawing from Chinese and Indian culture and history instead, the authors of the book explore the Eurocentric ideas of modernity to see it in a transcultural and pluralistic light. The volume proposes an understanding of modernity not as a moment of rupture from the past but as a process of continuity and renewal. By studying the Bhakti movement, Confucian democracy, and the maritime and agrarian economies of China and India, this book showcases the dynamism in these cultures. These in turn challenge stereotypes which portray Asia as a 'moribund continent' characterized by 'Orientalist despotism' and stagnation. By exploring these on a theoretical plane, the authors expand and enlarge the terms of debate and revisit devalued terms and concepts like tradition, religion, authority, rural and provincial as resources for modernity. This volume will be of great interest to researchers and academicians working in the areas of history, Sociology, Cultural Studies, literature, geopolitics, South Asian and East Asian Studies"

    Abstract: As contemporary socio-ecological challenges such as climate change and biodiversity preservation have become more important, the three pillars concept has increasingly been used in planning and policy circles as a framework for analysis and action. However, the issue of how culture influences sustainability is still an underexplored theme. Understanding how culture can act as a resource to promote sustainability, rather than a barrier, is the key to the development of cultural sustainability. This book explores the interfaces between nature and culture through the perspective of cultural sustainability. A cultural perspective on environmental sustainability enables a renewal of sustainability discourse and practices across rural and urban landscapes, natural and cultural systems, stressing heterogeneity and complexity. The book focuses on the nature-culture interface conceptualised as a place where experiences, practices, policies, ideas and knowledge meet, are negotiated, discussed and resolved. Rather than looking for lost unities, or an imaginary view of harmonious relationships between humans and nature based in the past, it explores cases of interfaces that are context-sensitive and which consciously convey the problems of scale and time. While calling attention to a cultural or 'culturalised' view of the sustainability debate, this book questions the radical nature-culture dualism dominating positive modern thinking as well as its underlying view of nature as pre-given and independent from human life.

    Abstract: Around the term 'place' a process of theory formation has emerged in English-language philosophy with hermeneutic and phenomenological orientation, which in Germany has until now rarely been acknowledged. This book changes that - with both foundational philosophical contributions from relevant authors on thinking about 'place' as well as with articles which illustrate the difficulties of 'place' via individual analyses of concrete examples. It addresses among others the meaning of 'place' in literature, popular media such as film and computer games, cults and myths, as well as in the fusion of economy and everyday experience.
    Abstract: Rund um den Begriff »Ort« hat in der englischsprachigen Philosophie hermeneutischer und phänomenologischer Prägung ein Prozess der Theoriebildung eingesetzt, der in Deutschland bislang nur wenig rezipiert wurde. Der Band ändert dies - er vereint sowohl grundlegende philosophische Beiträge zum Ortsdenken einschlägiger Autor_innen als auch Beiträge, in denen die Ortsproblematik an konkreten Beispielen in Einzelanalysen verdeutlicht wird. Zum Thema wird dabei u.a. die Bedeutung des Ortes in der Literatur, in populären Medien wie Film und Computerspielen, in Kult und Mythos sowie in der Verquickung von Ökonomie und Alltagserfahrung.

    Abstract: "After decades of mismanagement and direct military rule, Myanmar's contested transition to a more democratic government has rapidly shifted the outlook in this significant Southeast Asian nation. Since 2011, the removal of Western sanctions and new foreign investments have resulted in high rates of economic growth and an expanding middle class, albeit from a very low base. In a result unthinkable a few years earlier, former political prisoner and Nobel laureate, Aung San Suu Kyi, and her party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), formed a national government in early 2016. However, despite significant political and economic reforms since the liberalisation process commenced, the transition to civilian rule remains constrained by the military's 2008 Constitution, which guarantees that it operates unfettered by civilian oversight. As a result, although some ethnic conflicts have abated, others continue to fester while new conflicts have erupted. With a daunting task ahead the NLD government has made some progress in removing the vestiges of repressive military-era laws but many remain untouched and some of the practices of the new government provide unwelcome reminders of its authoritarian history. This timely Handbook describes the political, economic, cultural and strategic dimensions of this crucial period of transition in Myanmar life. It presents explanations for contradictory trends, including those that defy some of the early narratives about the comprehensive transformation of Myanmar life. The Handbook also considers the impact of major environmental, strategic, demographic and cultural trends which help in understanding that Myanmar's development will be an ongoing task"--

    Abstract: Wir leben in einer verflochtenen und dennoch geteilten Welt: Asymmetrien, Grenzziehungen und Politiken der Differenz bringen gleichzeitig die Trennlinien und den gemeinsamen Kontext für globales Zusammenleben hervor. Diese Ambivalenz schlägt sich auch in der deutschen Auswärtigen Kulturpolitik nieder, die sich ursprünglich an den Ordnungen des Nationalen orientiert hat, seit der Jahrtausendwende aber zunehmend auch geopolitische Bruchlinien und Konflikte als ihre Arbeitsfelder begreift. Basierend auf Feldforschungen in Berlin, Ramallah, Sarajevo, Tel Aviv und Jerusalem zeichnet Jens Adam Formierungs- und Übersetzungsprozesse einer neuen Policy nach. Er eröffnet damit Einblicke in translokale Wissens- und Handlungsräume, in denen sich Ordnungen des Nationalen und Potenziale der Kosmopolitisierung kreuzen. Ausgezeichnet mit dem ifa-Forschungspreis Auswärtige Kulturpolitik 2016.

    Abstract: 'Do it yourself'? - DIY is a practice with shifting conjunctures and slogans. This volume attempts to provide a critical revision of the phenomenon, and as such, is at odds with the standard (marketable) texts, which often amount to nothing more than praise and instructions. In an empirical fashion, the authors here deal with the interplay between the discourses and practices of DIY. Central to this is the contextualization of the micro-logical findings with the macro-structural dimensions of these activities, from the most diverse individuals - the examples range from 3D-printing in Palestinian refugee camps to urban beekeeping in Germany, right up to bicycle building in Budapest

Anne Rohrbach zeigt, wie kulturelle Projekte Frei-Räume in einer fragmentierten Gesellschaft öffnen und einen wichtigen Beitrag dazu leisten können, translokale Erinnerungs- und Widerstandsräume zu etablieren.

    Abstract: For Harry Redner, the phrase "beyond civilization" refers to the new and unprecedented condition the world is now entering - specifically, the condition commonly known as globalization. Redner approaches globalization from the perspective of history and seeks to interpret it in relation to previous key stages of human development. Redner studies the role played by capitalism, the state, science, and technology. He aims to show that they have had a catalytic impact on civilization through their reductive effect on society, culture, and individualism.     Abstract: Wie erlernen Kinder Emotionen und welche Rolle spielt dabei ihre soziale und kulturelle Umwelt? Gabriel Scheidecker untersucht die - bisher primär in westlichen Kontexten erforschte - Sozialisation von Emotionen erstmals in Madagaskar. Auf der Basis einer 15-monatigen Feldforschung in einer ländlichen Region der Insel beschreibt er detailliert die emotionalen Erfahrungen von Kindern in Verbindung mit den Erziehungsidealen und -praktiken ihrer Bezugspersonen. Im Fokus steht die Ausbildung einer kulturspezifischen moralischen Furcht gegenüber den Eltern sowie die feine Ausdifferenzierung von Wut. Damit erweitert der Band die Forschung zur Emotionssozialisation um eine kulturanthropologische Perspektive

    Abstract: The city of Tangiers in Morocco was for a long time a site of seductions, where painters, literati, and bon vivants could discover all of the delights of the Orient. After the »white dove on Africa's shoulder« disappeared from Europe's consciousness for 30 years, it is now experiencing a new economic and cultural boom. At the center of this book are the inhabitants of the city: how do they deal with the changes, and how do they recall the city's cosmopolitan past? What is the significance of the spirit-beings, what of the trance fraternities? What is the reputation of the city as a site of sin and sexual fulfillment all about? Dieter Haller's ethnography shows that rediscovering Tangiers is certainly worth the effort

    Abstract: Urban diversity has become de rigueur as a discursive line in contemporary contributions to urban development. However, the fact that this interplay of identities also influences social space has so far been overlooked. 'As one calls into the forest, so it will resound' - this familiar German saying proves to be an unreliable maxim: that which townsfolk might call into 'their' neighborhood only echoes back off its façades in a fragmentary fashion, as a wish, idealization or hope. Andreas Thiesen sketches out concepts of reflexive urban development, reveals errors in planning and renegotiates the 'problem of participation', which even today is yet to be resolved

Hierbei überrascht der Umgang mit den eigenen Sachen - nicht zuletzt, weil er mitunter destruktiv ist.     Abstract: This volume aims to encourage subjecting post-humanist transformations to experiments both in thought and in practice.     Abstract: This book helps in negotiating the - supposedly rigid - boundaries between the fields of art, theory, and activism. The thinking about artistic, theoretical, and activist questioning of power asymmetries along and between social categorizations such as gender, sexual orientation, class, (dis)ability, and perceived ethnicity or religion supports and inspires the fight against inequality and discrimination. The contributions show how the corresponding practices have differentiated in recent years, bringing together different forms of knowledge. They additionally show how these may be harnessed to the benefit of emancipatory movements

    Abstract: Abstoßung und Anreiz, Verbieten und Verschweigen, Thematisierung und Dethematisierung - dem Tabu wohnen Ambivalenzen inne, die auf besondere Weise für historische Beobachtungen produktiv gemacht werden können. Seit der kreativen Neuentdeckung durch Freud steht das Tabu im Zeichen einer Beobachtung eigener Kultur und zielt auf die Entdeckung von verborgenen gesellschaftlichen Vektoren. Die Beiträge des Bandes gehen den Spuren dieser produktiven Ambivalenz in Texten und Artefakten vergangener und gegenwärtiger Verhältnisse nach. Dabei stehen die politischen ebenso wie die ästhetischen und epistemischen Dimensionen des Tabus im Mittelpunkt. Ob beim Engel der Paulusapokalypse, im Schoß der mittelalterlichen Königin, in der Hollywood-Produktion »Minority Report« oder in den aktuellen Diskussionen zum deutschen Inzestverbot - Tabus werden da sichtbar, wo in der kulturellen Performanz Reibung entsteht
