Abstract: Consider this scenario: You walk into a building and a sensor identifies you through your mobile phone. You then receive a welcoming text telling you when lunch will be served, or perhaps a health warning based on allergy information you've stored in your profile. Maybe you'll be flagged as a security threat. How is that possible? This O'Reilly report explores ambient computing-hands-free, 24/7 wireless connectivity to hardware, data, and IT systems. Enabling that scenario requires a lot of work behind the scenes to determine network connectivity, device security, and personal privacy. With an ambient-computing technology stack already in the works, resolving those issues is only a matter of time. Through interviews with front-line tech pioneers-including Ari Gesher (Kairos Aerospace) and Matthew Gast (Aerohive Networks)-author Mike Barlow explores how real-time analytics can enable real-time decision making. How will simple beacons broadcast information to your phone as you pass businesses on your morning walk? How can emotional speech analysis monitor the emotional state of employees, students, or people in crowds? Pick up this report and find out.

Abstract: Soon enough, the Internet of Things will play a dominant role in the economies of countries and regions around the globe. Many players are already involved, but so far no single company, agency, or department can be held accountable if (and when) things go wrong. Simply put, today's IoT is like Dodge City in the Old West before the U.S. Marshals arrived. In this report, Mike Barlow examines what it will take to enact a set of realistic rules-including frameworks, policies, standards, and common procedures-for governing the IoT. You'll look at five broad and challenging areas: cyber security, privacy, software licensing, data use and ownership, and government regulation. There's no shortage of models for an IoT governance framework, and the case for developing a set of common standards is strong. But implementation challenges, fixed mindsets, and stubborn attitudes are standing in the way.

Abstract: Using log data to create value isn't new to mechanized industries. But in today's data-driven environment-particularly with the rise of the Internet of Things-this type of data exhaust can be converted from inactive, latent assets to critical-path components of an overall production ecosystem. In this report, Cameron Turner provides three real-world case studies in which his company, The Data Guild, served as a product co-development consultancy. You'll learn how an energy efficiency firm, a tech company, and a healthcare organization combined their historical logs with newly generated sensor data from the IoT. By leveraging machine learning to proactively identify efficiency and opportunity through prediction and recommendation, each company was able to deploy an ROI-generating solution and gain a significant business advantage. This report also provides advice for successfully implementing IoT data, as well as key factors to consider when performing data analysis.

Abstract: Data traffic has increased roughly 60 percent annually over the past two decades, according to one estimate. But that's nothing compared to the Internet of Things, a network of billions of "chatty machines" that will soon produce vast amounts of additional data. How prepared is your organization to handle the traffic expected from all your smart machines and sensors? In this O'Reilly report, Mike Barlow interviews several industry experts about the challenges and opportunities that businesses, organizations, and individuals in every sector of the economy will face in the next few years. Barlow explores options that include edge computing (running analytics at or near devices and machines), upgrading last-mile network links, working with software-defined networks (SDNs), and looking at solutions from the emerging smart city movement. If your organization is involved with the nascent IoT or its larger cousin, the Industrial Internet, this is one report you can't afford to ignore.

Abstract: Though data is increasingly seen as a source of power and wealth, very few organizations today realize what they have. Companies collect an astonishing volume and variety of data, but most of them lack the skills and experience needed to identify and gauge the value of these assets. And so they tend to give all of their data equal weight. In this O'Reilly report, Greg Fell and Mike Barlow examine the risks and financial costs organizations face when they treat all data equally. Through interviews with several industry experts, you'll get advice for determining the value of the data you collect, depending on who in your company is using it, how and where it's being used, and when and why they're using it. Pick up a copy of this report to learn the "5Ws and 1H" of data usage, the C-I-A (confidentiality, integrity, and availability) approach for managing data risk, seven core strategies for monetizing data, and a method for mapping the risk/reward tradeoffs of your data.

Abstract: Digging for answers to your pressing business questions probably won't resemble those tidy case studies that lead you step-by-step from data collection to cool insights. Data science is not so clear-cut in the real world. Instead of high-quality data with the right velocity, variety, and volume, many data scientists have to work with missing or sketchy information extracted from people in the organization. In this O'Reilly report, Jerry Overton-Distinguished Engineer at global IT leader DXC-introduces practices for making good decisions in a messy and complicated world. What he simply calls "data science that works" is a trial-and-error process of creating and testing hypotheses, gathering evidence, and drawing conclusions. These skills are far more useful for practicing data scientists than, say, mastering the details of a machine-learning algorithm. Adapted and expanded from a series of articles Overton published on O'Reilly Radar and on the CSC Blog, each chapter is ideal for current and aspiring data scientists who want to go pro, as well as IT execs and managers looking to hire in this field. The report covers: Using the scientific method to gain a competitive advantage The skill set you need to look for when choosing a data scientist Why practical induction is a key part of thinking like a data scientist Best practices for writing solid code in your data science gig How agile experimentation lets you find answers (or dead ends) much faster Advice for surviving (and even thriving) as a data scientist in your organization

Abstract: With the push for IoT-enabled solutions comes the need for reliable IoT platforms, especially for companies that require industrial-grade IoT capabilities. This O'Reilly report examines various features that heavy-equipment B2B industries should expect in an IoT platform, as well as the key attributes you should be looking for when choosing a platform vendor. Up to this point, much of the effort in developing an IoT solution has gone into platform building. But if you are to gain a competitive advantage in the marketplace, you can't afford to build technology stacks from scratch to accommodate hardware, firmware, software, edge computing, analytics, business systems integration, and many other components. In this report, author Matthew Perry explains what an industrial-grade IoT platform ideally should include, from bidirectional connectivity and distributed computing to availability, scalability, and reliability. You'll also learn how to assess your IoT strategy and find a vendor that can fulfill your specific needs. Matthew J. Perry is a writer and editor with a particular interest in how the Internet of Things can make cities smarter. He has written for Cisco Systems and collaborated on ten published books. He lives in New York City.

Abstract: Has design finally arrived? Venture capital firms with multimillion-dollar portfolios have recently begun to add design partners to work with startups during their formative stages. In this report, Irene Au-Design Partner at Khosla Ventures-describes what this emerging role means to designers, investors, and entrepreneurs. Through interviews with design partners in several VC firms, Au explains that a design partner's job is to provide design leadership. They may advise CEOs or work directly with leaders within the companies to help them succeed, but they don't do any hands-on design work for these companies or even tell them what the design of their product should be. By using design as a problem-solving tool, introducing design thinking into companies, and coaching leaders on how to create environments where design can be successful, design partners teach startups how to build design-oriented cultures during the most nascent stages of a company's life. Through the course of this report, you'll explore: What the design partner role means to designers, investors, and entrepreneurs Commonly asked questions about the role of design partner How design partners approach the job, and how they measure success Challenges that design partners face when working with startups What interested designers can do to prepare-or position-themselves for a design partner role

It also provides a completely different way of thinking about application and service delivery. In this report, Josh Stella, co-founder and CEO of Fugue, explains that embracing immutability means giving up the data center mindset, which focuses on individual machine uptime and maintenance, for a more flexible approach using API-driven infrastructure-as-code. Stella describes the advantages of working with immutable infrastructure-particularly automated instance replacement and autoscaling-and provides a look at current implementations in the marketplace. You'll also learn best practices for integrating immutable patterns into your workflow. Abstract: From computer vision to game playing, artificial intelligence (AI) has made a lot of progress in the past few years. Companies such as Google and Facebook have already placed huge bets on this technology, and over the next decade, AI features will steadily creep into one product after another. In this O'Reilly report, you'll examine the state of AI today and where we might be headed in coming years. To explain today's AI capabilities, authors Ben Lorica and Mike Loukides look at prominent examples such as Google's AlphaGo, self-driving cars, and face recognition-AIs that consist of narrow solutions to specific problems. Can researchers develop general intelligence flexible enough for an AI to learn without supervision, or choose what it wants to learn? This report takes a deeper look into: The meaning of "general intelligence" when applied to AIs Moving AIs from supervised learning to unsupervised learning Why AIs can easily solve problems that humans find challenging, but not problems that humans find easy The differences between autonomous AIs and assistive AIs that augment our intelligence Factors that have made AI a hot topic in recent years Today's successful AI systems, such as machine learning and computer vision OpenAI and the push to make AI research open and visible to the public

Abstract: The oil and gas industry was one of the first aggregators of what we now call "big data," but the amount of information these companies currently collect is truly unprecedented. In 1990, one square kilometer yielded 300 megabytes of seismic data; in 2015, it was 10 petabytes-33 million times more. This report features highlights from recent Strata+Hadoop World conferences to demonstrate how the petroleum industry uses data science in their operations today. Oil companies use machine learning to mitigate short-term operational risk and to optimize long-term reservoir management. But, as author Naveen Viswanath explains, machine learning models alone can't distinguish between good and bad data or reasonable and unreasonable results. Human intelligence-including a deep understanding of how data sources fit into business use cases-is crucial for making these distinctions. With this report, you'll learn the challenges these companies face when collecting a variety of data for seismic research, drilling, mechanical maintenance, worldwide logistics, and even gas station retail.

Abstract: Many regard FinTech as another example of technological disruption, but FinTech solutions need to integrate with existing systems in the financial industry, not replace them. As this report explains, "integration" between emerging technology and the entrenched financial services infrastructure is an ongoing challenge. There is much progress, but many hurdles remain. Through interviews with financial, technology, and legal experts, author Mike Barlow explores efforts to make financial services platforms more developer-friendly. Many software architects see modular software based on microservices and service-oriented architecture (SOA) as the way forward, but the financial industry's regulatory environment is a significant barrier to overcome. Download this report and learn how FinTech startups are creating novel types of business models in Africa and Asia, where there are far fewer traditional banks, and in Europe and the US, where financial institutions generally avoid the market for small business loans.

Abstract: If you want to design apps for smart watches, it's important to know that different platforms have vastly different capabilities. Apple Watch and Android Wear, for instance, serve primarily as smartphone extensions with fast CPUs, bright displays, and relatively short battery life. Pebble's watches improve on this with better battery life and screens that work outdoors. Garmin watches take battery life and durability a step further. It's said that if you know how to build a boat, you can build things that will stand up to any environment this planet can throw at you. The "boatbuilders" at Garmin have created watches for long-term use in punishing, sometimes extreme conditions (such as a 24-hour ultra marathon). In this report, author Brian Jepson takes you on a hands-on tour of Garmin and its Connect IQ SDK. Garmin goes furthest in prioritizing run time and resilience over raw processing power, but as you'll discover, the watch does not sacrifice the functionality you need to develop first-class fitness- and health-related applications. This report explores both the advantages and constraints of working with Connect IQ. Explore Garmin's ability to collect data from users and return timely results to them Start developing for Connect IQ by using templates for four kinds of apps Work with example projects in Connect IQ, including ways to read data from an ANT+ sensor Get developer resources for building wearable apps that do more with less Brian Jepson is an O'Reilly editor, hacker, and co-organizer of Providence Geeks and the Rhode Island Mini Maker Faire. Abstract: One of the joys of web development is the chance to use the latest technologies, but relying on new tools can have unintended consequences. This O'Reilly report explains how today's massive, resource-heavy websites limit the options for millions of users, and shows you what you can do to make your sites and apps more inclusive. A growing number of people around the world who can't afford high-speed Internet-or have slow, unreliable connections-often resort to smartphones with restrictive data plans just to take care of basics such as banking or job hunting. How can you build sites that work everywhere, on every network? Author Adam Scott provides options and best practices to help you: Expose permanent, human-readable links-rather than change your URL when you upgrade your site Use responsive web design to ensure your site conforms to a range of viewport sizes Develop applications that perform well in a variety of network conditions Include offline capabilities that let users work with your site even when network connections are poor As the Web continues to play an increasingly large role in our daily lives, these features will help your online product fulfill Tim Berners-Lee's promise of a global communication network that enables people to participate fully, no matter what connection they use.

Abstract: This past autumn, O'Reilly Media for the first time conducted an anonymous online survey of salaries of designers, UX/UI specialists, and others in the design space. This in-depth report presents complete survey results which demonstrate how variables such as job title, location, use of specific tools, and the types of tasks performed affect salary and other compensation. The survey attracted more than 300 designers, managers, and directors from 25 countries. Most of them work onweb and mobile products or connected devices in a wide variety of industries. Respondents' median salaries have been sorted according to: Work location (country or US region), age, gender, and education Job title, such as director, manager, consultant, developer, analyst, and designer Company size, products and services produced, team size, and design processes used Professionals they work with most, including programmers, other designers, and product managers A range of tasks, including user research, usability testing, information architecture, UI design, prototyping, and project management Tools used most often, from Dropbox, Slack, and GitHub to Adobe Illustrator, Sketch, and InVision, to Google Analytics and HTML/CSS Curious how you would do in a different location, or how different skills and responsibilities might affect your salary? Download this free report to gain insight from these potentially career-changing findings, and learn how to plug your own information into the survey's linear model. To stay up to date on this research, your participation is critical. Abstract: Like any committed organization, your company wants to attract and keep loyal employees who are creatively productive and engaged with their work. And those workers want to be appreciated for the job they do. This report shows you how to align both goals, with guidelines for a powerful process that's often undervalued: one-on-one meetings between managers (or team leaders) and the people in their charge. Author Esther Schindler explains that one-on-one meetings can help managers break down barriers, give and receive useful and immediate feedback, and ultimately build team loyalty. With the best practices in this report, you can transform these meetings from an irritating waste of time into a valuable "special time" for both workers and managers. Learn why one-on-ones are important for developing trust, aligning tasks, and mentoring Conduct these meetings as a conversation-and don't be afraid to be personal Make the process work by scheduling recurring meetings and building in follow-up Get guidelines for what (and what not) to talk about during one-on-one meetings and for dealing with tricky situations and negative feedback Judge your success with a checklist for self-assessment Esther Schindler is a longtime tech industry journalist who's translated geek-talk into English since 1992. Abstract: The power industry is undergoing an significant transformation toward smart energy. Internet-connected smart devices to regulate and save energy are certainly part of the picture, but as this comprehensive O'Reilly report explains, the key piece is the emergence of reliable energy-storage solutions. Today, people can outfit their homes, factories, and offices with rechargeable lithium-ion batteries from Tesla and other companies to store energy from any power source. Author Darren Beck describes how energy storage changes the game for renewable energy, which up until now has been a niche player because of its intermittent supply. Homeowners and businesses will be able to produce their own clean energy and share it on the grid. It's the beginning, Beck says, of decentralized energy production that can not only reduce the use of fossil fuels-drastically-but also set up a vast network of distributed storage. And it's coming sooner rather than later. Download this report to learn: Why Tesla has spurred interest in energy storage-and why the company open-sourced its patents for the technology What a network of distributed storage will look like How smart meters can track energy demand across the grid in real time How peer-to-peer business models can be used in a sharing economy for energy Why owners of multi-tenant properties can set up micro virtual utilities How consumers can store electricity when the cleanest energy choices come online Darren Beck has more 25 years of combined experience in business development, strategy, technology, and sustainability. In addition to writing about green practices in IoT for O'Reilly Media, Darren serves as Director of Environmental Initiatives for Sprint, and is as an Advisory Board Member for DaVinci Global, an organization designed to be the world's leading source of insights into nature-inspired design for innovation, business, and finance.

Abstract: Over the last 20 years, companies have invested roughly $3-4 trillion in enterprise software. These investments have been primarily focused on the development and deployment of single systems, applications, functions, and geographies targeted at the automation and optimization of key business processes. Companies are now investing heavily in big data analytics ($44 billion alone in 2014) in an effort to begin analyzing all of the data being generated from their process automation systems. But companies are quickly realizing that one of their key bottlenecks is Data Variety-the silo'd nature of the data that is a natural result of internal and external source proliferation. The problem of big data variety has crept up from the bottom-and the cost of variety is only appreciated when companies attempt to ask simple questions across many business silos (divisions, geographies, functions, etc.). Current top-down, deterministic data unification approaches (such as ETL, ELT, and MDM) were simply not designed to scale to the variety of hundreds or thousands or even tens of thousands of data silos. Download this free eBook to learn about the fundamental challenges that Data Variety poses to enterprises looking to maximize the value of their existing investments-and how new approaches promise to help organizations embrace and leverage the fundamental diversity of data. Readers will also find best practices for designing bottom-up and probabilistic methods for finding and managing data; principles for doing data science at scale in the big data era; preparing and unifying data in ways that complement existing systems; optimizing data warehousing; and how to use "data ops" to automate large-scale integration.

Abstract: Why do we cook the way we do? Are you the innovative type, used to expressing your creativity instead of just following recipes? Do you want to learn to be a better cook or curious about the science behind what happens to food as it cooks? More than just a cookbook, Cooking for Geeks applies your curiosity to discovery, inspiration, and invention in the kitchen. Why do we bake some things at 350°F/175°C and others at 375°F/190°C? Why is medium-rare steak so popular? And just how quickly does a pizza cook if we overclock an oven to 1,000 F/540 C? Author and cooking geek Jeff Potter provides the answers to these questions and more, and offers his unique take on recipes -- from the sweet (a patent-violating chocolate chip cookie) to the savory (slow-cooked brisket). This book is an excellent and intriguing resource for anyone who enjoys cooking or wants to experiment in the kitchen. Discover what type of cook you are and calibrate your tools Learn about the important reactions in cooking, such as protein denaturation, Maillard reactions, and caramelization, and how they impact the foods we cook Gain firsthand insights from interviews with researchers, food scientists, knife experts, chefs, writers, and more, including author Harold McGee, TV personality Adam Savage, and chemist Hervé This
