Abstract: Relations between France and Britain have always been uneasy and ambivalent. But in cinema the WWII changed all that for a time. Although the two countries' wartime fortunes differed, post-war both were busy reintegrating returning servicemen and prisoners of war, and accomodating the changed aspirations of women. Margaret Butler examines these subjects and more in her comparative study of the cinemas of Britain and France during and after the war. Using the concept of continuity, she shows how cinema dealt directly with ideas of belonging and alienation, inclusion and exclusion, unity and div

Abstract: Optical communications technology is growing increasingly in importance, with a rapid pace of development. Innovative optical devices have emerged from the integration of semiconductor laser diodes, amplifiers and filters with optical waveguide technology. This well-researched volume traces the evolution of semiconductor laser amplifiers (SLAs) from these technologies. Focusing on the principle applications of SLAs, the author illustrates the growing importance of these functional components in the future of optical communications systems. This book will provide engineering and science students with a basic understanding of laser diode and optical amplification through the analysis of the performance characteristics of these devices both in theory and application. Practicing device engineers wishing to consolidate their knowledge in lightwave technology will also find this book an invaluable reference

Abstract: This volume brings together prominent archaeologists working in areas outside Western Europe to discuss the most recent evidence for the origins of the early Upper Paleolithic and its relationship to the origin of modern humans. With a wealth of primary data from archaeological sites and regions that have never before been published and discussions of materials from difficult-to-find sources, the collection urges readers to reconsider the process of modern human behavioral origins. Archaeological evidence continues to play a critical role in debates over the origins of anatomically modern humans. The appearance of novel Upper Paleolithic technologies, new patterns of land use, expanded social networks, and the emergence of complex forms of symbolic communication point to a behavioral revolution beginning sometime around 45,000 years ago. Until recently, most of the available evidence for this revolution derived from Western European archaeological contexts that suggested an abrupt replacement of Mousterian Middle Paleolithic with Aurignacian Upper Paleolithic adaptations. In the absence of fossil association, the behavioral transition was thought to reflect the biological replacement of archaic hominid populations by intrusive modern humans. The contributors present new archaeological evidence that tells a very different story: The Middle-Upper Paleolithic transitions in areas as diverse as the Levant, Eastern-Central Europe, and Central and Eastern Asia are characterized both by substantial behavioral continuity over the period 45,000-25,000 years ago and by a mosaic-like pattern of shifting adaptations. Together these essays will enliven and enrich the discussion of the shift from archaic to modern behavioral adaptations

Abstract: The 17 chapters in this book, which evolved from a conference on measuring the contributions of ITS sponsored by the California Department of Transportation in February 2002, examine the costs and benefits of ITS in an economic and business policy context. Section 1 examines the broad theme of how and what ITS contributes to the economy and how one makes a business case for ITS. Section 2 includes three chapters on ITS applications in mass transit. Section 3 explores ITS applications in the automobile/highway system. Section 4 considers integrative issues including how ITS is perceived and how it can be positioned to improve surface transportation. This volume will be especially useful to researchers and policy makers working in transportation, transportation engineering, and the economic analysis of transportation systems

Abstract: Annotation "The chapters in this volume evaluate the capacity of authorities to enforce the tax laws in a modern, global economy and examine the implications of failing to do so. Specific aspects of tax law, including tax shelters, issues relating to small businesses, tax software, role of tax preparers, and the objectives of tax simplification are examined in detail." "The volume also builds a conceptual basis for future scholarship, with regard not only to tax administration, but also to such fundamental questions as whether taxpayers respond mostly to economic incentives or are influenced by their experiences with the filing process and what is the proper framework for evaluating the allocation of resources within the IRS."--BOOK JACKET. Abstract: "Jack Triplett and Barry Bosworth analyze services sector productivity, demonstrating that fundamental changes have taken place in this sector of the U.S. economy. They show that growth in the services industries fueled the post-1995 expansion in U.S. productivity and assess the role of information technology in transforming and accelerating services productivity. In addition to their findings for the services sector as a whole, they include separate chapters for a diverse range of industries within the sector, including transportation and communications, wholesale and retail trade, and finance and insurance."--BOOK JACKET

Abstract: "The Savings and Loan Crisis: Lessons from a Regulatory Failure" sets the record straight about what actually happened to our banking institutions in the 1980s. As is documented by the highly respected and diverse group of former regulators, scholars and practitioners contributing to this book, the collapse of this industry was caused by a confluence of adverse economic conditions and misguided regulatory decisions. Poorly designed deposit insurance, faulty supervision, and restrictions on investments prevented savings and loans from adapting to a changing financial marketplace. Unable to use financial innovations, savings and loans could not hedge interest rate and credit risks. These factors blocked portfolio diversification and lay at the root of the crisis. The savings and loan crisis was an accident, but it was an avoidable one. Most of the factors responsible for causing and exacerbating the industry's problems were preventable, as is made clear in this volume. This book also provides an insider's view of the transformation of the financial services industry in the United States since the 1980s: how the managers and owners make decisions about product offerings and investments; how the regulators monitor performance and enforce the rules; and how Congress and the Administration influence and are influenced by the financial services industry. Lastly, it focuses attention on the lessons that should have been learned from this difficult period in the history of U.S. banking, and that should help prevent future banking crises everywhere.

Abstract: From publisher: If you are looking to brush up on your literary knowledge, check a favorite author's work, or see a year's bestsellers at a glance, The Chronology of American Literature is the perfect resource. At once an authoritative reference and an ideal browser's guide, this book outlines the indispensable information in America's rich literary past-from major publications to lesser-known gems--while also identifying larger trends along the literary timeline. Who wrote the first published book in America? When did Edgar Allan Poe achieve notoriety as a mystery writer? What was Hemingway's breakout title? With more than 8,000 works by 5,000 authors, The Chronology makes it easy to find answers to these questions and more. Authors and their works are grouped within each year by category: fiction and nonfiction; poems; drama; literary criticism; and publishing events. Short, concise entries describe an author's major works for a particular year while placing them within the larger context of that writer's career. The result is a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of some of America's most prominent writers. Perhaps most important, The Chronology offers an invaluable line through our literary past, tying literature to the American experience-war and peace, boom and bust, and reaction to social change. You'll find everything here from Benjamin Franklin's Experiments and Observations on Electricity, to Davy Crockett's first memoir; from Thoreau's Civil Disobedience to Edith Wharton' Ethan Frome; from meditations by James Weldon Johnson and James Agee to poetry by Elizabeth Bishop. Also included here are seminal works by authors such as Rachel Carson, Toni Morrison, John Updike, and Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. Lavishly illustrated-and rounded out with handy bestseller lists throughout the twentieth century, lists of literary awards and prizes, and authors birth and death dates-The Chronology of American Literature belongs on the shelf of every bibliophile and literary enthusiast. It is the essential link to our literary past and present

Abstract: "The concept of equalization labour is a measure of the degree of community, solidarity, reciprocity, redistribution, and equalization of the society under consideration. It is determined by a number of methods presented in this study, which also emphasizes the rationality, meanings, properties, and ways of practical implementation of this optimum distribution. This result is compared with the various distributive principles found in practice and in political, philosophical, and economic thinking, with the conclusion that most have their proper specific scope of application. The analytical presentation of the social ethics of economics is particularly enlightening."--Jacket

    Keywords: Gisu (African people)
Abstract: This collection of three documents about the Bagisu, all in English, covers a time span from the late nineteenth century to approximately 1989. The Bagisu or Gisu live on the western slopes of the now extinct volcano Mount Elgon in eastern Uganda. Lugisu (Masaba), the language of the Bagisu, is a Bantu language in the larger Niger-Congo group of languages. A concise summary of most major features of Bagisu ethnography from around the 1890s to 1954 can be found in LaFontaine. This is supplemented by Roscoe's earlier account of Bagisu ethnography that deals with information from the late nineteenth through the early twentieth centuries. While this latter document does contain some unique cultural data, LaFontaine questions the validity of some of Roscoe's information (e.g., the existence of cannibalism among the Bagisu). Heald's work on the Bagisu is based on the author's fieldwork in Central Bugisu from 1965-1969, and is a detailed study of the various ways in which violence is expressed in Bagisu society and the manner in which it is brought under control. This document presents data on the reputation and history of violence among the Bagisu, statistics on homicide, the association of violence with manhood and the expression of anger, the ordeal of circumcision, behavior and treatment of witches and thieves, hostility management in the community, and the establishment of vigilante groups and drinking companies to control violence

    Keywords: Bakairi Indians ; Bakairí
Abstract: This collection of 7 documents is about the Bakairi, a Carib-speaking group living on Upper Xingu River in the state of Mato Grosso in south central Brazil. The German explorer Steinen wrote the earliest accounts of the Bakairi based on his one-month stay with them during his 1884 trip down the Xingu river and his travels among the tribes located along the Kulisehu River, in the Upper Xingu area in 1887. Abreu wrote an early account of Bakairi language, mythology, and religion based on 1892 Portuguese texts. Schmidt includes the history of the Bakairi subsequent to Steinen's expedition and up to the year 1927. During this period of time, numerous socio-political and cultural changes took place among the Bacairi. He describes three different Bacairi groups: the Eastern, Western, and Xinguanos. Altenfelder Silva describes the culture of the Bakairi Indians of Mato Grosso circa 1940 including their technology, kinship terminology, pantheon, ceremonies, shamanism, and the series of ritualistic seclusions, or uanki, that occur at intervals during the life cycle. Oberg's account is based on his fieldwork among the people living on the Government Indian Post on the Rio Paranatinga during June 1947. It should be noted that the information presented in this source, obtained primarily from informants, relates to an earlier period in Bacairi history (ca. 1907) when they lived on the Rio Kuliseu. Data presented pertain to settlement patterns, subsistence activities, house types, furniture, language, culture history and early European contacts, population, dress and personal ornaments, organization of labor, social organization, the life cycle, puberty rites, marriage, burial, shamanism, games, ceremonialism and mythology

Abstract: The Zia are a Keres-speaking pueblo tribe who live on the Jemez River, 35 miles northwest of Albuquerque, New Mexico. This collection of eight documents is about the Zia. The classic work is by Leslie White and was based on his fieldwork from 1928-1929 and return visits during the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. He focused mostly on secret societies, including membership, recruitment, and ceremonies. Two of the documents are by Hoebel. The first is a brief account of Zia history and culture that was also published in the Handbook of North American Indians. The second is about Zia law. There is no private law. Clans and lineages have no role in the legal process. All cases are brought before the governor and a council comprised of the heads of secret societies. Lange has written a detailed account of the famous Green Corn Dance; Hawley et al. a nutritional study; Polese on the Zia sun symbol; and Stevenson on child birth. The bibliography of citations to works on Zia Pueblo is also taken from vol. 9 of the Handbook on North American Indians, Southwest

Abstract: This collection of 23 documents is about the Early Icelanders and covers the time span from the first Norse settlement in Iceland around 874 A.D. to Iceland's incorporation into the kingdom of Norway in approximately 1262 A.D. The major focus is on the Commonwealth Period from 930 to 1262 A.D. Much of the cultural data gathered for this period comes from the analysis and interpretation of a number of Icelandic sagas written primarily in the thirteenth century. The most comprehensive study of the social, economic, and political changes taking place in Medieval Iceland over a four hundred year period is The dynamics of medieval Iceland by Durrenberger. This study begins with the first Norse settlement in Iceland around 874 A.D. and ends with the incorporation of Iceland into the kingdom of Norway in 1264 A.D. Fourteen of these documents were originally published in: From sagas to society, edited by Gísli Pálsson

Abstract: These 22 documents are about the inhabitants of Iceland. The time span ranges from about the middle of the nineteenth century to the late twentieth, with a particular focus on the period of the l940s to the 1980s. Most of the works are widely diversified in subject coverage, although there is emphasis on the economy, especially in regard to the marine fisheries and whaling. The status of women and women's movements in Iceland are the topics of the works by Kristmundsdóttir, Skakptadóttir, and Björnsdóttir. Gurdin's is a study of domestic violence in Iceland. Other topics covered by other authors include ethnolinguistics, zooarchaeology, kinship, literacy and literacy practice, and an analysis of the Icelandic sagas as works of fiction or historical fact

Keywords: Gisu (African people) ; Gisu ; Gisu

Keywords: Bakairi Indians ; Bakairí ; Bakairí

Abstract: Lower Chinookans is a reference to the group of Chinookan language speakers living on the northwest coast of the United States in the states of Washington and Oregon and on both banks of the Lower Columbia River from its mouth to just beyond the Willamette River. The group consists of the Chinook proper, the Clackamas, Clatsop, Shoalwater Chinook, Wahkiakum, and Cathlamet (Kathlamet). This collection of 10 English language documents deals with the Chinookans of the Lower Chinook region. The major time focus of this collection is from the late eighteenth century through the nineteenth. The most comprehensive traditional ethnographies of the Lower Chinookans can be found in Ray's Lower Chinook ethnographic notes and Silverstein's Chinookans of the Lower Columbia. Other major topics discussed in other documents include songs, beliefs about sickness and death, and humor and verbal irony

Abstract: This collection consists of of 94 English language documents and one translation from the German. While the time coverage is vast (from 800 B.C. to the 1980s) and there is good historical depth, the focus is primarily on rural Greek society in the latter half of the 20th century, particularly in the mainland regions of Boeotia, Piraeus, Kokinia, Zagor, Epiros, and central Macedonia and the major Aegean or Greek islands of Crete, Rhodes, Lesbos, and the Cyclades (Tinos, Anafi). Also included are comprehensive studies on the Sarakatsani nomads of the Zagori, Epirus, Thessaly, and central Greece regions. Several documents deal with the city of Athens

Boileau
Abstract: Annotation, "During the last years, many meetings, seminars, conferences, and books have been conducted and written to celebrate the hundredth anniversary of Pope Leo XIII's encyclical Rerum novarum (May 15, 1891). We hope in this book to give the reader an historical background to this celebration. No other historian in Catholic circles enjoys the reputation of Canon Roger Aubert. Thus, we are presenting ten of his articles that have to do with Catholic social teaching." "These articles give very measured descriptions of the struggles, defeats, and successes that mark the birth of Catholic social teaching. Their reading should produce great wonder and awe at the stance taken by the Church over the last hundred years. That they have not been adhered to and that they are called "our best kept secret" underlines the fact and the struggle that we all have to become truly Christian."--BOOK JACKET.
