    Abstract: The book presents Cognitive Linguistics as a framework for the study of cultural variation in world Englishes and within languages in general by offering a corpus-based analysis of the linguistic realization of the cultural model of community in African English. It also reflects on the role of English in intercultural communication and positions Cognitive Linguistics within a wider hermeneutic tradition.     Abstract: The book is the first of its kind to establish Cognitive Linguistics as a research paradigm within the field of world Englishes. The authors survey the main tenets of both areas of linguistic enquiry and suggest that the theoretical and methodological apparatus developed both within Cognitive Linguistics generally and within its novel sub-discipline Cognitive Sociolinguistics can overcome certain limitations inherent in traditional approaches to cultural variation in language. They present a case study of the linguistic realization of the cultural model of community in African English as an exemplar for the investigation of cultural models in other varieties of English. Corpus-linguistic methods are combined with conceptual metaphor analysis and blending theory to elucidate a vast network of conceptualizations salient to speakers of African English. The findings, based on computer corpora and a range of additional sources, are discussed against the background of work in anthropology, religious studies, and political science. The book also reflects on the role of English in intercultural communication and concludes with a comparison of Cognitive Linguistics and pragmatic functionalism, placing the former in the wider framework of a hermeneutic philosophy that stresses dialogic understanding.

    Abstract: Scholars in the field of communication research have extensively studied television viewing in general and watching television news in particular. The book looks at the subject from an integrative theoretical perspective. Based on Schutzean sociology and action theoretical approaches to media use, the author argues that immediate social influences and other everyday life situations largely determine television use, and that the influence of short-term situational characteristics are often overlooked in person-centered explanatory models. In three empirical studies, the role of short-term situations and the influence of immediate social surroundings is analyzed. The use of Discrete Time Event History Analysis is an innovative way to look at household diary data. Findings reveal how family members influence each other in many ways. Watching television turns out to be an integral part of everyday life in the family, but also a force that may reduce family interaction. It is shown that television may serve as a surrogate for those family members that are not present, and that family members while present at home follow each others example. Partners are shown to mimic each other, children to mimic their parents, and parents follow the example set by their children. Television news viewing, in contrast to general television viewing is less determined by the immediate influence of others. Also, the individual motivations for news viewing vary throughout the day. First exposure to television news appears to be motivated by other factors than subsequent exposure. A need for 'surveillance' dominates first exposure, but subsequent exposure appears to be governed by other, more 'ritualistic' motivations. The book is important to scholars, graduate-level students and practitioners who are concerned with theoretical and methodological insights in the phenomenon of television viewing in everyday life.

    Abstract: "When, how and why do clothes become fashion? Fashion is more than mere clothing. It is a moment of invention, a distillation of desire, a reflection of a zeitgeist. It is also economically relevant relying on an intricate network of manufacture, marketing and retail. Fashion is both medium and message but it does not explain itself. It requires language and images for its global mediation. It develops from the prescience of the designer and is dependent on acceptance by observers and wearers alike.     Abstract: The book presents a discourse analysis of police interrogations involving U.S. Hispanic suspects accused of crimes. The study is unique in that it concentrates on interrogations involving suspects whose first language is not English and police officers who have a rudimentary knowledge of Spanish. It examines the pitfalls of using police officers as interpreters at custodial interrogations. Using an interactional sociolinguistic discourse analytical approach, the book offers a microlinguistic examination of interrogations involving persons accused of murder, child molestation, and kidnapping. Communication difficulties are shown to arise from suspects' limited proficiency in English and police officers' equally limited proficiency in Spanish, coupled with the unwillingness of these officers to remain in interpreter footing. The volume demonstrates how pidginization and asymmetrical communicative accommodation can emerge in such situations of highly unequal power relations. It also demonstrates how cultural factors such as acquiescence to interlocutors of greater authority and higher socioeconomic status can lead persons of certain Latin American backgrounds to engage in ""gratuitous concurrence"", answering ""yes"" to police questions even when it is clear that that these yes-tokens are not truly affirmative responses to those questions. In addition, the book provides evidence of the kinds of abuse that can result from police interrogations that are not electronically recorded. Coerced Confessions reviews appellate cases involving police interpreters spanning a thirty-four-year period, and concludes that the Miranda rights are placed in jeopardy when a police officer is assigned the role of interpreter at a custodial interrogation.

    Abstract: A key challenge in the development of safety cases for the deep geological disposal of radioactive waste is handling the long time frame over which the radioactive waste remains hazardous. The intrinsic hazard of the waste decreases with time, but some hazard remains for extremely long periods.     Abstract: Geological settings selected as potential host formations for the deep geological disposal of radioactive waste are chosen for, among other assets, their long-term stability and buffering capacity against destabilising events and processes. These proceedings present the outcomes of a geosphere stability workshop, held in November 2007, that focused on crystalline and other types of hard, fractured rocks. The workshop underscored the fact that many such rocks are intrinsically stable environments that evolve extremely slowly and provide good buffering against external events and processes. The proceedings show a good understanding of the processes and events that can affect crystalline rocks and, although there is less confidence in predicting exactly when and where such events will occur and the volume of rock that will be affected, the extent of the impacts on a geological repository can be confidently addressed using bounding approaches supported by geological information from similar sites around the world.

    Abstract: Many countries have recognised that greater use of nuclear power could play a valuable role in reducing carbon dioxide emissions. However, given the high capital cost and complexity of nuclear power plants, financing their construction often remains a challenge. This is especially true where such financing is left to the private sector in the context of competitive electricity markets. This study examines the financial risks involved in investing in a new nuclear power plant, how these can be mitigated, and how projects can be structured so that residual risks are taken by those best able to manage them. Given that expansion of nuclear power programmes will require strong and sustained government support, the study highlights the role of governments in facilitating and encouraging investment in new nuclear generating capacity.

    Abstract: It is a dynamic time for the nuclear power sector. Existing reactor control rooms are undergoing various forms of modernisation. New reactors are being built in many countries and advanced reactors are being designed through international co-operation to support power generation for decades to come. The new technologies and concepts that are being considered in this context could impact upon the roles of the plant operators and thus plant safety. It is therefore important that the potential implications – both positive and negative – are evaluated and understood. Through this technical opinion paper, the NEA Committee on the Safety of Nuclear Installations (CSNI) has sought to identify a set of research topics that should be explored in order to enhance knowledge of the human and organisational factors concerned. Research to address the topics described in this paper will provide the technical basis to help ensure that the benefits of new technology are realised and that the potential negative effects are minimised. This paper should be of particular interest to research organisations and other stakeholders (including regulatory agencies, international organisations and industry organisations) that could support this research and benefit from its results.

    Abstract: Nuclear power plant modifications may be needed for a number of different reasons. These include physical ageing of plant systems, structures and components; obsolescence in hardware and software; feedback from operating experience; and opportunities for improved plant safety, reliability or capability. However, experience has also shown that weaknesses in the design and/or implementation of modifications can present significant challenges to plant safety. They can also have a considerable impact on the commercial performance of the plant. It is therefore important that the plant modification process reflect a recognition of the potential impact of human errors and that it incorporate suitable measures to minimise the potential for such errors. In this context, the NEA Committee on the Safety of Nuclear Installations (CSNI) and its Working Group on Human and Organisational Factors organised an international workshop in 2003 to discuss the role of human and organisational performance in the nuclear plant modification process. This technical opinion paper represents the consensus of specialists in human and organisational factors (HOF) in the NEA member countries on commendable practices and approaches to dealing with nuclear plant modifications. It considers factors that should be taken into account when developing a modification process and identifies some lessons learnt from application of the process. The paper should be of particular interest of nuclear safety regulators and nuclear power plant operators.

    Abstract: Errors during maintenance and periodic testing are significant contributors to plant events. These errors may not always be revealed by post-maintenance tests and may remain undetected for extended periods until the affected system is called upon to function. It is therefore important that the plant maintenance process take into account the potential impact of human and organisational errors, and that it incorporate suitable measures to minimise the potential for such errors. The NEA Committee on the Safety of Nuclear Installations (CSNI) and its Working Group on Human and Organisational Factors organised an international workshop to discuss the role of human and organisational performance on maintenance. This technical opinion paper represents the consensus of specialists on human and organisational factors in NEA member countries on commendable practices and approaches to dealing with nuclear power plant maintenance. It sets out a framework for including a systematic consideration of human and organisational factors in the plant maintenance process. The paper should be of particular interest to nuclear safety regulators and nuclear power plant operators.

    Abstract: Nuclear power plants require a wide variety of specialised equipment, materials and services for their construction, operation and fuelling. There has been much consolidation and retrenchment in the nuclear industry since the 1980s, with the emergence of some large global nuclear companies. Electricity market liberalisation in many OECD countries has meanwhile placed nuclear plant operators under increased competitive pressure.These structural changes in both the producer and consumer sides of the nuclear industry have had implications for the level of competition in the nuclear engineering and fuel cycle markets. With renewed expansion of nuclear power now anticipated, this study examines competition in the major nuclear industry sectors at present, and how this may change with a significant upturn in demand.

    Abstract: Abstract: "Dass behinderte Menschen anders sind als 'wir Normalen' (Erving Goffman), wird üblicherweise nicht auf gesellschaftliche Einflüsse zurückgeführt, sondern auf gesundheitliche Störungen und Auffälligkeiten, die als objektiv feststellbare 'Naturtatsachen' angesehen werden. Entsprechend wird 'Behinderung' (disability) zumeist umstandslos mit 'Beeinträchtigung' (impairment) gleichgesetzt. In jüngster Zeit haben allerdings die Disability Studies darauf aufmerksam gemacht, dass es auch im Falle von Behinderung keine unhintergehbare Natur gibt. Demzufolge ist Behinderung ein eher unscharfer Oberbegriff, der sich auf eine bunte Mischung von unterschiedlichen Merkmalen bezieht, die nichts anderes gemeinsam haben als das Stigma sozialer Abweichung. Die Verfasstheit des europäischen Gemeinwesens tritt dabei zunehmend in Widerspruch zur Verfasstheit des sozialen Konstituenten von Herrschaft, der weder als 'Demos' noch als 'Volk' in einem gesamteuropäischen Entscheidungszusammenhang in Erscheinung tritt. Allerdings mündet die Konstitutionalisierung der EU in dem Postulat eines 'europäischen Demos' als Voraussetzung der Legitimität europäischen Regierens. Einerseits zeigt sich deutlich, dass die Bildungsexpansion die Kluft zwischen bildungsnahen und bildungsfernen Schichten nicht schließen konnte und der erhoffte Struktureffekt ausgeblieben ist. Andererseits kann man einen Niveaueffekt der Bildungsexpansion beobachten: vor allem Mädchen und Kinder aus mittleren Schichten konnten individuelle Bildungsaufstiege realisieren. Der Vortrag geht über diese gut etablierte Perspektiven hinaus: Wenn hier von sozialer Vererbung von Bildungsgewinnen aus der Bildungsexpansion die Rede ist, geht es um die Frage, wie nachhaltig diese Anhebung des Bildungsniveaus der Bevölkerung durch die Bildungsexpansion war.     Abstract: Abstract: "Die Bezeichnung 'Poststrukturalismus' ist ein Sammelbegriff, der recht heterogene französische Denkansätze der 1960er bis 1980er Jahre retrospektiv zusammenfasst, die sich selbst nicht so bezeichnet haben. In der deutschen Rezeption der 1970er und vor allem 1980er Jahre war das Label 'postmodernes Denken' ausschlaggebend, um die Arbeiten Derridas, Foucaults, Lyotards und anderer zu charakterisieren. Dabei stand nicht der Gegensatz des Poststrukturalismus zum Strukturalismus im Zentrum, sondern die Frage, ob es verantwortbar sei, auf die normative Kategorie des Subjekts zu verzichten. Während von Foucault und Derrida her die Historisierung bzw. Dekonstruktion des Subjekts zentral war, die Figur des Subjekts also auf die Gegenstandsseite der Untersuchung geschoben wurde, erkannten Gegner unterschiedlicher Provenienz genau darin eine Aufgabe aufklärerischer Prinzipien. Die Ursachen dafür sind längst nicht vollständig erkannt und zahlreiche - wohl aber zu wenige - Forschungsvorhaben beschäftigen sich mit deren Analyse. Noch weniger wird allerdings am anderen Ende der Frage, wie denn eine 'nachhaltigere', besser abgestimmte Lebensweise aussehen könnte, geforscht. Vorstellungen einer Totalität der Gesellschaft werden nicht nur infrage gestellt, sondern rücken spätestens in den neunziger Jahren zugunsten von Theorien in den Hintergrund, die entweder 'Gesellschaft' auf Konstruktionen von Individuen, auf subjektive Erfahrungen und mikrosoziale Interaktionen zurückführen oder diese aufgrund zunehmender Entgrenzungserscheinungen nicht mehr als ein, wenn auch zum Teil widersprüchliches und dynamisches, zusammenhängendes Ganzes betrachten. Diese Prozesse gehen soweit, dass man in postmodernen soziologischen Theorien sogar vom Ende des Sozialen (Baudrillard) spricht.     Abstract: Abstract: "Forschungsgegenstand ist die Entwicklung eines Modells zur Analyse komplexer Entscheidungsprozesse. Im Zentrum steht dabei die Modellierung der interaktiven Einflüsse zweier oder mehrerer Akteure auf die Entscheidung. Die Besonderheit des Modells liegt dabei nicht nur in der Ermittlung der unterschiedlich starken relativen Einflüsse der Verhandlungspartner auf das Ergebnis. Es lässt sich darüber hinaus der soziale Prozess, in dem die Entscheidung getroffen wurde und der zu der Entscheidung beigetragen hat, im Rahmen des Modells berücksichtigen. So kann mit dem Modell der Verhandlungs- bzw. Entscheidungsprozess zwischen mindestens zwei Akteuren in seiner Dynamik abgebildet werden. Als Basis zur Modellierung von Entscheidungsprozessen dient das von Sobel und Arminger entwickelte nichtlineare simultane Probit-Modell, das in verschiedener Weise verallgemeinert wird, so dass es auf unterschiedliche Entscheidungsprozesse (Multi-Actor-, Multi-Decision-, Multi-Wave-Design) angewandt werde

Hier scheint sich ihr eine konflikthafte Ambivalenz für beide Geschlechter anzudeuten, wobei die Verunsicherung auf beiden Seiten (wenn auch je unterschiedlich) neben der Möglichkeit der Verflüssigung von stereotypen Körperbildern auch die Gefahr der Rigidisierung und Wiederaufnahme tradierter Formen mit sich bringt.     Abstract: Abstract: "Eine weitere Besonderheit konsumvermittelter Vergesellschaftung ist der Bezug auf Objekte, jedenfalls wenn es sich im klassischen Sinne um materielle Güter, also Waren handelt, was zumindest in historischer Perspektive lange Zeit ausschlaggebend gewesen ist. Das charakteristische und kulturkritisch oft hervorgehobene Moment der Unverbindlichkeit des Konsums erwächst aus der Warenform, also der Dekontextualisierung der Konsumobjekte, die somit auf Märkten disponibel werden. Aber auch die von der Soziologie früh bemerkte symbolische Dimension des Konsums (aus der soziale Mechanismen wie Mode oder Distinktion abzuleiten sind) ist objektvermittelt: Es sind die konsumierten oder begehrten Objekte, welche sozial wirksam werdende Bedeutungen transportieren. Vor diesem Hintergrund steht in Michael Makropoulos' Vortrag der Vergleich des Konsums mit einem weiteren, für die Moderne charakteristischen Medium objektvermittelter Vergesellschaftung - der Architektur."     Abstract: Abstract: Nach der modernen Privatisierung und soziologischen Entzauberung des familiären Zusammenlebens entdecken Wissenschaftler und Politiker nun wieder die Familie als den besten Ort, um Kinder zu zeugen und großzuziehen sowie als die beste Form der Gesundheits- und Altenpflege. Auch der deutsche Wohlfahrtsstaat, der aus Kostengründen sein sozialpolitisches Engagement zusammenstreicht, erhöht sein Budget für Familienpolitik. Ist dieses Geld gut investiert? Erfüllt tatsächlich die Familie diese biologischen Aufgaben am besten? Und von welcher Familie ist hier eigentlich die Rede? Die Autorin versucht in ihrem Beitrag, diese Fragen mit Blick auf die Gesundheitsproduktion in Familien anhand empirischer Daten aus dem Sozio-Ökonomischen Panel von 1984 bis 2003 zu beantworten.     Abstract: Abstract: "Das Referat setzt an einem paradoxen Phänomen alternder Gesellschaften an. Weder der höhere medizinische und gesundheitliche Standard und dessen positiven Folgen für die Leistungsfähigkeit Älterer, noch die gestiegene Lebenserwartung führen zu einer 'natürlichen' Anpassung von Altersbildern. Im Gegenteil, momentan gehört 'Ageism' (Altersstereotype und zugehörige Diskriminierungen) zur Alltagskultur. Das Defizitmodell des Alters bleibt - wider lebensweltlicher Erfahrungen und wissenschaftlicher Befunde - offenbar deutungsmächtig. Im medialen Diskurs werden zudem die Prognosen der Demographen zu Vorhersagen von Naturkatastrophen stilisiert und damit eine Hysterie gegenüber Alterungsprozessen angeheizt. Gleichzeitig wird deutlich, dass ältere Arbeitnehmer nicht nur länger arbeiten könnten, sondern dieses nun auch als notwendig und erforderlich diskutiert wird.     Abstract: Abstract: "Im Vortrag wird über eine Erhebung der kognitiven sozialen Struktur bei im zweiten Semester Studierenden der Medienwissenschaften der Universität Siegen berichtet. Bei der kognitiven sozialen Struktur wird die Repräsentation des Beziehungsnetzwerks bei den einzelnen Teilnehmern abgefragt. Wenn man davon ausgeht, dass die Beziehungen der anderen für das eigene Handeln eine Rolle spielen, dann sind solche kognitiven Repräsentationen von enormer Bedeutung. Unterstützung für die Wichtigkeit der wahrgenommenen Beziehungen für das eigene Handeln findet man in der Theorie, insbesondere bei Überlegungen zur Transitivität von Beziehungen, etwa bei der 'Balance Theory'. Dabei ist es unbedeutend, ob die im Kopf präsenten Beziehungen tatsächlich existieren, selbst die nur imaginierten Beziehungen sind verhaltenswirksam.     Abstract: Abstract: Claude Lévi-Strauss hielt im Jahr 1962 in Genf aus Anlass des 250. Geburtstages von Jean Jacques Rousseau eine Rede, in der er Rousseau als einen Begründer der Wissenschaften vom Menschen präsentierte. Im gleichen Jahr publizierte Lévi-Strauss sein Buch über das "Wilde Denken", wo er in seiner berühmt gewordenen Auseinandersetzung mit Sartre darauf verweist, dass "das letzte Ziel der Wissenschaften vom Menschen nicht das ist, den Menschen zu konstituieren, sondern ihn aufzulösen". Binnen eines Jahres erklärte Lévi-Strauss Rousseau also einerseits zum Begründer der Wissenschaften vom Menschen, andererseits sah er jedoch das Ziel der soeben auf Rousseau verpflichteten Humanwissenschaften ausgerechnet in der Auflösung ihres Gegenstandes.
