Abstract: It has long been recognized that R&D plays a key role in the global battle for technological leadership. However, due to intense competition and rivals' imitations, firms are not always able to reap rewards from their innovations. Mario Kafouros theoretically and empirically examines the impacts of innovation and scientific knowledge on the productivity performance of multinational corporations, and the conditions under which companies benefit from their technological discoveries. The book also investigates the extent to which the research efforts of other companies can contribute to a firm's productivity, and how multinationals build on external inventions, ideas and knowledge. The results confirm that not all firms can benefit from innovation, and indicate that whilst some companies can turn technological advances into a powerful competitive weapon, innovation for others is merely a defense mechanism. To provide a clearer understanding of the relationship between innovation and firm productivity performance, the book also investigates a number of additional issues including the costs of R&D, the association between the Internet and R&D efficiency, and the role of competition, internationalization, firm size and technological opportunities. This book will appeal to academics and researchers in the fields of international business, innovation and R&D, productivity and firm performance, the economics of technological change, and knowledge management. As the author examines the conditions under which firms benefit from innovation, managers, R&D directors, economists and government agents may also use the research findings in order to develop strategies and policies to maximize the impacts of innovation

Abstract: O. Yul Kwon uses an institutional framework to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the environmental and operational dynamics of international business in South Korea from the rapid growth period 1963-1996, through recovery from the 1997 financial crisis, to the present. The study assesses that the South Korean market and business practices will maintain some sui generis characteristics because of the country's idiosyncratic culture and singular form of institutional development in the recent past. The book contains comprehensive analysis of macro-level topics (such as business opportunities, cultural influence, country risk and market configuration) and micro-level topics (including business negotiation, business ethics, management of international joint ventures and the management system). This book delivers a wealth of valuable information for a scholarly audience including undergraduate and postgraduate students and academics in international business, as well as for firms considering market entry into South Korea

Abstract: Business Networks and Strategic Alliances in China addresses how knowledge transfer and innovation are interwoven within complex networks and how social capital contributes to the acquisition of crucial resources and business success in multi-type enterprises in China. The book explains how China's remarkable global economic impact in recent years has developed from foreign investment and that the dominant vehicle for economic development has been the International Joint Venture (IJV) between Chinese manufacturers and overseas enterprises. Strict guidelines on FDI mean that foreign firms have been obliged to form relationships with Chinese organizations. The authors illustrate that as a direct result, the quality and nature of the relations, networks, and alliances forged is crucial for the success of Chinese businesses. A sophisticated empirical, theoretical, comparative and historical guide to understanding the nature of business networks in China is provided by this work. As such, it makes a distinct contribution to the furtherance of evidence-based management theory and practice and will strongly appeal to those with an interest in management, international business and Asian studies

Abstract: This book presents various empirical analyses of cross border strategies adopted by global firms with a particular emphasis on the European and East Asian experiences. It also provides studies of the trends and prospects of regional economic integration, focusing mainly on East Asia. The book addresses the topic of economic integration from both a corporate perspective and a policy perspective. The contributors illustrate the powerful integrative effects of cross border strategies of global firms and their impact on the increasing economic interdependence between countries, as shown for example by production sharing within multinational corporate networks. For their part, governments and policy makers are endeavouring to influence the path of globalisation by means of international cooperation, among which the shaping of regional economic areas is an outstanding one. While Europe still stands unrivalled in terms of its regional integration achievements, East Asian countries are also trying to forge their own path by building preferential trade and investment links on a regional basis. Such attempts are still in their infancy, but they raise some healthy debates to which this edited book makes a valuable contribution. Corporate Strategies in the Age of Regional Integration will appeal to scholars and researchers of economics, business and regional studies

Abstract: The Korean Economy examines how Korea's inward FDI-led globalization, particularly since the financial crisis of 1997, has been experienced, understood, managed and often strongly resisted in various economic, social and cultural domains. It is an in-depth analysis combining perspectives from politics and economics, examining a number of grievances as seen through the eyes of actual foreign investors operating in Korea. The authors argue that it is precisely these obstacles that need to be addressed if Korea is to live up to its full potential in terms of becoming a truly attractive magnet for FDI and comprehensively integrating into the global economy. The authors make a convincing case that the challenges Korea currently faces are by no means limited to institutional and policy reforms, but rather are entrenched in an anti-globalization mindset shared by all sectors of society. This critical examination of the Korean government's inward FDI policies includes the experiences of around 50 CEOs of operating MNCs in Korea including various chambers of commerce and law firms. It also examines both perceptions and realities of the Korean market from in-depth interviews with over 50 foreign CEOs of MNCs operating in Korea, as well as a critical examination of Korea's current efforts to become a Northeast Asian business centre. This book will appeal to academics and postgraduate students of Asian studies and international business, the foreign business community (including existing and potential foreign investors to the Korean market) as well as government and policy makers

Abstract: Craig Julian argues that the International Joint Venture (IJV) phenomena represents two opposing trends. On the one hand, an analysis of the number of new IJVs reveals that they are becoming increasingly popular as a mode of overseas market entry and expansion. On the other hand, however, the significance of a robust growth trend is overshadowed by the incidence of high failure. The book examines the factors influencing the marketing performance of IJVs in South East Asia, including market characteristics, conflict, commitment, product characteristics, marketing orientation, control, trust, partner's contributions and partner's needs. A unique composite measure incorporating financial, strategic and perceptual tools is used to determine the marketing performance of IJVs, and directions for future research are provided. Managers are then guided in better managing and improving the success of their IJVs, and the importance of top management team composition to IJV performance is also highlighted. International Joint Venture Performance in South East Asia provides the most comprehensive list of references on joint venture academic research to date with 60 pages of references on joint venture research. As such, this book will be invaluable to both academics and practitioners with an interest in international business research and the management of IJVs

Abstract: Characterized by new analytical insights and methods in the field of international business, this collection of articles by Alan Rugman and Alain Verbeke celebrates their long and productive work together on issues facing top managers of multinational enterprises. Fueled by their belief in the need for better theory in multinational strategic management, the authors have explored a number of different facets in this increasingly important realm. They have organized the work into five sections: the foundations of a new theory of multinational strategic management, a radically new examination of multinational strategic management, national competitiveness, the relatively under-researched but increasingly important issue of environmental strategies of multinational enterprises, and the interactions between multinational strategic management and public policy. This outstanding collection, inspired by the occasion of Alan Rugman's 60th birthday, will be of great interest to scholars and practitioners of international business and management, as well as to economists and lawyers

Abstract: This book explores the regional strategy and management of Japanese MNEs in Europe. Ken-ichi Ando investigates, using case studies of the auto and pharmaceutical industries, how these companies can, and do, overcome the inherent difficulties and opportunities of trading in Europe, including the problems posed by cultural differences and geography, alongside the opportunities of expanding markets. While these companies are global players, they must increasingly be aware of, and evolve in response to, European economic integration. The strategy setting and management are influenced by company- and industry-specific factors, and some common features can be found. The locational and entry strategies are based both on the multinationals' own resources and capability, and on the changing locational conditions, while pan-European management is conducted to achieve the benefits of 'multinationality' at the regional level. The mutual relationships between the location of subsidiaries, the entry mode, and the pan-European operation are clearly shown from the detailed analysis at the company level. The impacts and limits of the EU on multinationals are also confirmed in the book, and the importance of national characteristics is suggested. Scholars and graduate students studying international business and economics, as well as European integration will find this book of great interest

Abstract: Foreign investment has surged across emerging markets. This unique comparative study presents the first systematic evidence on the entry mode, business environment and their interrelationships in emerging markets. It integrates strategic management and economic policy analysis, and provides new insights for both business managers and government policymakers. The book investigates foreign direct investment (FDI) strategies in four important emerging economies: Egypt, India, South Africa and Vietnam. These countries liberalized their economies in the 1990s with the intention of attracting greater FDI inflows. This book assesses whether they have been successful in achieving this goal. The authors adopt a comparative perspective, and use a large enterprise survey plus three individual case studies in each country. They investigate the strategies of foreign direct investors, focusing on the relationship between the investment climate, the mode of entry (acquisition, greenfield or joint venture), company performance, and spillovers to the host economy. The book outlines how the interactions between international businesses and the local policy environment influence the entry strategies of firms. Academics and researchers with an interest in international business, emerging markets, economic development and strategic management will find this book informative and insightful

Abstract: This major book provides a new understanding of systems of corporate governance, notably in the USA, Japan and the EU. It discusses how governance influences corporate cultures and strategies, particularly in response to the effects of deepening integration in the world economy. These effects present challenges for governments, obliging them to focus increasingly on problems of the management of structural and foreign trade policies. Challenges in international financial markets also have to be confronted by policymakers as industries are funded more and more through cross-border investments, which reflect the responses of systems of corporate governance to globalization. The book links studies of corporate governance with surveys of efficiencies and failures in international financial markets, as well as examining aspects of corporate governance systems that have special significance for the management of economic policies as globalization continues. The contributors advocate increased international cooperation to promote more structural complementarities in the world economy
