Abstract: Abstract What is the difference between a virtual machine and a Docker container? A virtual machine (VM) is like a house. It is fully contained with its own plumbing and heating and cooling system. If you want another house, you build a new foundation, with new walls, new plumbing, and its own heating and cooling system. VMs are large. They start their own operating systems. Containers are like apartments in an apartment building. They share infrastructure. They can be many different sizes. You can have different sizes depending on the needs. Containers "live" in a Docker host. If you build a house, you need many resources. If you build an apartment building, each unit shares resources. Like an apartment, Docker is smaller and satisfies specific needs, is more agile, and more easily changed. This IBM® Redbooks® publication examines the installation and operation of Docker Enterprise Edition on the IBM Z® platform.

Generics: write code that doesn't need to know every detail about the data it's working with closures: writing code that can be run at a later time types and protocols: understanding how Swift's type system works, and how to make custom types that fit neatly into the language custom operators: creating your own representations for different ways objects can interact with each other. Literal convertibles: writing code that interacts nicely with built-in types. This talk is designed for existing programmers of any type, but does not necessarily require any Swift (or Objective-C) experience. At the end, attendees will understand these five essential components of the Swift, and how to use them to improve their code and be more "Swifty"."--Resource description page.

Abstract: IBM® DB2® Version 11.1 for z/OS® (DB2 11 for z/OS or just DB2 11 throughout this book) is the fifteenth release of DB2 for IBM MVS™. The DB2 11 environment is available either for new installations of DB2 or for migrations from DB2 10 for z/OS subsystems only. This IBM Redbooks® publication describes enhancements that are available with DB2 11 for z/OS. The contents help database administrators to understand the new extensions and performance enhancements, to plan for ways to use the key new capabilities, and to justify the investment in installing or migrating to DB2 11. Businesses are faced with a global and increasingly competitive business environment, and they need to collect and analyze ever increasing amounts of data (Figure 1). Governments also need to collect and analyze large amounts of data. The main focus of this book is to introduce recent DB2 capability that can be used to address challenges facing organizations with storing and analyzing exploding amounts of business or organizational data, while managing risk and trying to meet new regulatory and compliance requirements. This book describes recent extensions to DB2 for z/OS in V10 and V11 that can help organizations address these challenges.

Abstract: IBM® DB2® for IBM z/OS® helps lower the cost of managing data by automating administration, increasing storage efficiency, improving performance, and simplifying the deployment of virtual appliances. By automating tasks such as memory allocation, storage management, and business policy maintenance, DB2 is able to perform many management tasks itself, freeing up Database Administrators to focus on new projects. This IBM Redbooks® publication introduces autonomics for DB2 for z/OS. IBM provides several different components that, when combined, can create an autonomic database environment. All these respective components cover certain aspects of autonomics, which can collaborate into one coherent solution. In our evolution of autonomics and the need to move to smarter systems there has been a bigger drive to the concept of "Active" versus "Passive" autonomics. With the inclusion of the IBM Management Console for IMS™ and DB2 for z/OS and the Autonomics Director, it is now easier than ever to make that transition by leveraging the strength of the DB2 Utilities Solution Pack for z/OS all in one standardized and centralized interface. This publication guides you through the business reasons for adopting autonomic solutions, and provides step-by-step guidance to implement these capabilities in your DB2 for z/OS configuration. This publication is of interest primarily to DB2 Database Administrators and DB2 Systems Programmers, and for anyone looking to understand the benefits of DB2 autonomic solutions.

Abstract: Transforming data from operational data models to purpose-oriented data structures has been commonplace for the last decades. Data transformations are heavily used in all types of industries to provide information to various users at different levels. Depending on individual needs, the transformed data is stored in various different systems. Sending operational data to other systems for further processing is then required, and introduces much complexity to an existing information technology (IT) infrastructure. Although maintenance of additional hardware and software is one component, potential inconsistencies and individually managed refresh cycles are others. For decades, there was no simple and efficient way to perform data transformations on the source system of operational data. With IBM® DB2® Analytics Accelerator, DB2 for z/OS is now in a unique position to complete these transformations in an efficient and well-performing way. DB2 for z/OS completes these while connecting to the same platform as for operational transactions, helping you to minimize your efforts to manage existing IT infrastructure. Real-time analytics on incoming operational transactions is another demand. Creating a comprehensive scoring model to detect specific patterns inside your data can easily require multiple iterations and multiple hours to complete. By enabling a first set of analytical functionality in DB2 Analytics Accelerator, those dedicated mining algorithms can now be run on an accelerator to efficiently perform these modeling tasks. Given the speed of query processing on an accelerator, these modeling tasks can now be performed much quicker compared to traditional relational database management systems. This speed enables you to keep your scoring algorithms more up-to-date, and ultimately adapt more quickly to constantly changing customer behaviors. This IBM Redbooks® publication describes the new table type that is introduced with DB2 Analytics Accelerator V4.1 PTF5 that enables more efficient data transformations. These tables are called accelerator-only tables, and can exist on an accelerator only. The tables benefit from the accelerator performance characteristics, while maintaining access through existing DB2 for z/OS application programming interfaces (APIs). Additionally, we describe the newly introduced analytical capabilities with DB2 Analytics Accelerator V5.1, putting you in the position to efficiently perform data modeling for online analyti...

Abstract: Microservices is an architectural style in which large, complex software applications are composed of one or more smaller services. Each of these microservices focuses on completing one task that represents a small business capability. These microservices can be developed in any programming language. They communicate with each other using language-neutral protocols, such as Representational State Transfer (REST), or messaging applications, such as IBM® MQ Light. This IBM Redbooks® publication gives a broad understanding of this increasingly popular architectural style, and provides some real-life examples of how you can develop applications using the microservices approach with IBM Bluemix™. The source code for all of these sample scenarios can be found on GitHub (https://github.com/). The book also presents some case studies from IBM products. We explain the architectural decisions made, our experiences, and lessons learned when redesigning these products using the microservices approach. Information technology (IT) professionals interested in learning about microservices and how to develop or redesign an application in Bluemix using microservices can benefit from this book.

Abstract: This IBM® Redbooks® publication explains the capabilities of IBM WebSphere® Application Server Liberty profile (Liberty profile), which is lightweight, easy to install, and fast to use. Liberty profile provides a convenient and capable platform for developing and testing your web and OSGi applications. The Liberty profile server is built by using OSGi technology and concepts. The fit-for-purpose nature of the run time relies on the dynamic behavior that is inherent in the OSGi framework and service registry. As bundles are installed or uninstalled from the framework, their services are automatically added or removed from the service registry. The result is a dynamic, composable run time that can be provisioned with only what your application requires and responds dynamically to configuration changes as your application evolves. This book can help you install, customize, and configure several popular open source technologies that can be deployed effectively with the Liberty profile server. The following popular open source toolkits for the Liberty profile server were selected for this book based on the significant enhancements they provide to the web application development process: Apache Maven Spring Framework Hibernate Jenkins Opscode Chef Arquillian MongoDB In this book, the Todo sample demonstrates the use of multiple open source frameworks or toolkits with the Liberty profile server, including Maven, MongoDB, Spring, JPA, Arquillian, Wicket, and others. The Todo sample is a simple application that can be used to create, update, and delete todo items and todo lists, and put the todo items into a related todo list.

Abstract: Praise for Hands-On Microsoft Access "Bob has distilled the essence of database design and Access development into a highly valuable and easily understandable resource that I wish was available when I first started out." -Graham R. Seach, Microsoft Access MVP "If you've been using Access with that typical uncertainty, asking yourself 'Just how could I do that?' or 'Why isn't this working?', if you'd like to know what you're doing before you hit the wall, this book is probably perfect for you." -Olaf Rabbachin, CEO, IntuiDev IT-solutions "Life at the cutting edge of Access development is exciting and very challenging. The knowledge and experience gained over many years of research and trial-and-error has been hard won. But Bob's new book encapsulates the knowledge we now take for granted, and for the first time the beginner is afforded the opportunity to bypass all that hard work. In this his latest work, Bob has distilled the essence of database design and Access development into a highly valuable and easily understandable resource that I wish was available when I first started out." -Graham R Seach, MCP, MCAD, MCSD, Microsoft Access MVP, author "This is an excellent book for beginners, with an easy reading style. It is now on my recommended list of books that I hand out in every Access class that I teach." -M.L. "Sco" Scofield, Microsoft Access MVP, MCSD, Senior Instructor, Scofield Business Services "If you've been using Access with that typical uncertainty, asking yourself 'Just how could I do that?' or 'Why isn't this working?', or if you'd like to know what you're doing before you hit the wall, this book is perfect for you. Access is a tremendous product and a database is created using a few clicks; but without at least some theoretical background you're bound to encounter problems soon. I wish a book like this one would've been available when I started getting deeper into working with Access some ten years ago." -Olaf Rabbachin, CEO, IntuiDev IT-solutions "This book is for any level DB developer/user. It is packed full of real-world examples and solutions that are not the normal Northwind database that most Access books use. The examples and the technical content surrounding them are the real strength of the book. Schneider uses real-world scenarios that make for excellent reading. It made me want to go and redo a lot of my older Access DBs that were not written as well as they could have been. This book taught me different approaches to...

Abstract: Since development first began on Spring in 2003, there's been a constant buzz about it in Java development publications and corporate IT departments. The reason is clear: Spring is a lightweight Java framework in a world of complex heavyweight architectures that take forever to implement. Spring is like a breath of fresh air to overworked developers. In Spring, you can make an object secure, remote, or transactional, with a couple of lines of configuration instead of embedded code. The resulting application is simple and clean. In Spring, you can work less and go home early, because you can strip away a whole lot of the redundant code that you tend to see in most J2EE applications. You won't be nearly as burdened with meaningless detail. In Spring, you can change your mind without the consequences bleeding through your entire application. You'll adapt much more quickly than you ever could before. Spring: A Developer's Notebook offers a quick dive into the new Spring framework, designed to let you get hands-on as quickly as you like. If you don't want to bother with a lot of theory, this book is definitely for you. You'll work through one example after another. Along the way, you'll discover the energy and promise of the Spring framework. This practical guide features ten code-intensive labs that'll rapidly get you up to speed. You'll learn how to do the following, and more: install the Spring Framework set up the development environment use Spring with other open source Java tools such as Tomcat, Struts, and Hibernate master AOP and transactions utilize ORM solutions As with all titles in the Developer's Notebook series, this no-nonsense book skips all the boring prose and cuts right to the chase. It's an approach that forces you to get your hands dirty by working through one instructional example after another-examples that speak to you instead of at you.

Abstract: While the look and feel of an enterprise web application is certainly important, developers usually find themselves spending far too much time on the front-end presentation before they can get to coding the good stuff--the business logic at the heart of the program. Jakarta Struts addresses this issue by combining Java Servlets, Java ServerPages (JSP), custom tags, and messaging resources (like Java Message Service) into a unified, re-usable framework. The result is a cooperative, synergistic platform that's efficient and suitable for independent developers, large development teams, and everyone in between. The Struts Framework has become a highly popular open source project, but there's still woefully little documentation on the technology. What does exist is far too basic and lacks critical information for developers like you writing today's complex web applications. The revised and expanded Programming Jakarta Struts , 2nd Edition covers everything the successful earlier edition did--including an overview of the concepts involved in writing web applications; installation and configuration instructions for getting Struts up and running; a thorough discussion of how Struts implements the Model-View-Controller (MVC) design paradigm (known as the Model 2 approach) and how to interface with that pattern in your own applications; Logging, Validation, and Exception Handling with Struts; using Tiles; writing internationalization and localization code using Struts; and practical, real-world best practices for web applications--as well as plenty more: now fully up to date with Struts 1.1, this edition covers the latest material on tag libraries and the new JavaServerFaces (JSF) APIs and even includes all-new chapters on JSF, JSTL/EL, and security. With each enterprise system he s developed, author Chuck Cavaness has spent many grueling hours learning invaluable lessons about Struts and figuring out the dos and the don'ts of building web applications. He saves you time and headaches by sharing that invaluable real-world experience here, with his realistic, practical, here's how to do it approach to using the Struts Framework to its fullest potential.

Abstract: The new Oracle Application Server offers a wide range of functionality, including Java runtime and development tools, portal development tools, business intelligence, single sign-on identify management, and much more. It's so powerful and complex, in fact, that many people who use the product (or are considering using it) are familiar with only a portion of the entire range of its capabilities. The choices can be overwhelming. Few people grasp how the larger issues--such as the interplay between components or the various architectural choices in the product--play out in the Oracle Application Server. This new guide provides the perfect introduction to the Oracle Application Server for users of any level. Regardless of which of the server's capabilities you use, you'll benefit from this tightly focused, all-in-one technical overview. It's written for anyone who is concerned with using and managing web servers, doing Java development and deployment, using Oracle's own tools--like Forms and Reports, using or developing for Oracle Portal, or those who use and administer business intelligence, mobile or integration software. Divided into three concise sections, the book covers server basics, core components, and server functionality. The book leads with the history of Oracle Application Server, its architecture, management, standards, and third-party support for languages and tools such as Java, Perl, and HTTP. The next section covers Oracle's web server, containers for Java web caching, and the server's security features. And finally, the book discusses HTML development, Java development, and Oracle development. Although the book refers mainly to Oracle Application Server 10g, the authors also describe features in earlier product releases where necessary, particularly Oracle9i Application Server. More comprehensible than a large reference and more detailed than a primer, the book provides a foundation for understanding and using Oracle Application Server effectively and efficiently. Readers concentrate on the most important issues and components of the server, focusing primarily on principles rather than syntax. Designed to be the ideal first OracleAS book, Oracle Application Server 10g Essentials offers Oracle application developers and administrators everything they need to know about this powerful server.

Abstract: This is the SQL reference you'll reach for first, every time! If you're an SQL programmer, you can easily picture how useful a comprehensive, single-volume Transact-SQL command reference manual would be in streamlining your work. And if that book was rich in examples, was written with users of all levels of expertise in mind, and was even designed to fit comfortably on your desktop, you'd probably buy it right away, wouldn't you? Well, look no further- Transact-SQL Desk Reference , by noted programming instructor Deac Lancaster, is exactly the book you need. As it turns out, Transact-SQL Desk Reference is just the book Deac himself was looking for. The problem was, no such book existed, so he saved programmers everywhere a lot of trouble and he wrote it himself! The book answers the question, "How exactly do I write a statement to do a particular job?" by providing the full syntax of each command along with examples showing each command in action. Then, to assist you in making your code more portable, Transact-SQL Desk Reference shows where Transact-SQL diverges from the ANSI SQL standard. The commands are arranged by functional area and are well indexed and cross-referenced, making it as easy as possible to find what you're looking for-even if you don't know the command's name. Inside, you'll find: SQL commands grouped logically by purpose and function, plus an index so you can jump right to the command Definitions that give the full syntax of each command, along with examples of each command in use plus tips on maximizing portability Additional chapters covering RDBMS concepts, details of Transact-SQL, and advanced SELECT queries! Abstract: Praise for XForms: XML Powered Web Forms "XForms is an exciting new technology for designing Web forms in an elegant and accessible way. Raman's book provides strong motivations for flexibility in the design of human-machine interactions, and explains how to use XForms to this end in crystal-clear prose." - Eve Maler XML Standards Architect, Sun Microsystems "Interactive forms technology is the logical evolution of Web user interface design. XForms represents a significant leap forward in that evolution." - Sean McGrath CTO, Propylon "The greatest strength of this book is the skill with which T. V. Raman links the XForms technology with the larger context of the Web. The limitations of HTML forms, the ways in which XForms provides a better foundation for Web and Web service user interfaces, and the opportunities for an XForms-powered Web that is accessible to all users and devices are outlined and brought together in a compelling way." - Michael Champion Advisory Research and Development Specialist, Software AG "Raman's book gives the reader an excellent explanation of the emerging W3C XForms recommendation. It's a well-organized and well-written book that begins with a gentle introduction to the concepts that motivated the development of XForms and then provides a reasonable overview of the relevant XML technology related to XForms. Most of the book covers XForms components: user interface controls, model properties, functions, actions, and events. It concludes with XForms as a Web service, offering multi-modal access and accessibility. In light of the October 2003 deadline for U.S. federal agencies to comply with the mandate of the Government Paperwork Elimination Act (GPEA) to give citizens the opportunity to provide information online, this important technical work comes none too soon. As T. V. masterfully elucidates, XForms provides the 'last mile' in 'connecting users to their data.' Insightfully, he also observes 'the document is the human interface' to data-an understanding without which the challenge to make eGov services 'citizen-centered' simply cannot and will not be met." - Owen Ambur Cofounder and Cochair, XML Working Group, U.S. CIO Council "I found the author's straightforward style quite comfortable and informative. I heartily recommend this book, especially for government XML developers interested in the broader area of E-Forms. Understanding XForms is key to developing robust and flexible E-Forms solutions that separate cont...

Abstract: SQL in a Nutshell applies the eminently useful "Nutshell" format to Structured Query Language (SQL), the elegant--but complex--descriptive language that is used to create and manipulate large stores of data. For SQL programmers, analysts, and database administrators, the new second edition of SQL in a Nutshell is the essential date language reference for the world's top SQL database products. SQL in a Nutshell is a lean, focused, and thoroughly comprehensive reference for those who live in a deadline-driven world. This invaluable desktop quick reference drills down and documents every SQL command and how to use it in both commercial (Oracle, DB2, and Microsoft SQL Server) and open source implementations (PostgreSQL, and MySQL). It describes every command and reference and includes the command syntax (by vendor, if the syntax differs across implementations), a clear description, and practical examples that illustrate important concepts and uses. And it also explains how the leading commercial and open sources database product implement SQL. This wealth of information is packed into a succinct, comprehensive, and extraordinarily easy-to-use format that covers the SQL syntax of no less than 4 different databases. When you need fast, accurate, detailed, and up-to-date SQL information, SQL in a Nutshell , Second Edition will be the quick reference you'll reach for every time. SQL in a Nutshell is small enough to keep by your keyboard, and concise (as well as clearly organized) enough that you can look up the syntax you need quickly without having to wade through a lot of useless fluff. You won't want to work on a project involving SQL without it.

Abstract: Not a reference book, and not a tutorial either, the new second edition of the highly regarded Access Cookbook is an uncommonly useful collection of solutions to problems that Access users and developers are likely to face as they attempt to build increasingly complex applications.Although using any single "recipe" in the book will more than pay back the cost of the book in terms of both hours saved and frustration thwarted, Access Cookbook , Second Edition is much more than a handy assortment of cut-and-paste code. Each of the "recipes" examine a particular problem--problems that commonly occur when you push the upper limits of Access, or ones that are likely to trip up a developer attempting to design a more elegant Access application--even some things you never knew Access could do. The authors then, in a clear, accessible, step-by-step style, present the problems' solution. Following each "recipe" are insights on how Access works, potential pitfalls, interesting programming techniques that are used in the solution, and how and why the solution works, so you can adapt the problem-solving techniques to other similar situations.Fully updated for Access 2003, Access Cookbook , Second Edition is also one of the first books to thoroughly explore new support for .NET managed code and XML. All of the practical, real-world examples have been tested for compatibility with Access 2003, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. This updated new edition also covers Access and SharePoint, Access and SmartTags, Access and .NET; and Access and XML.Access power users and programmers at all levels, from the relatively inexperienced to the most sophisticated, will rely on the Access Cookbook for quick solutions to gnarly problems. With a dog-eared copy of Access Cookbook at your side, you can spend your time and energy where it matters most: working on the interesting facets of your Access application, not just the time-consuming ones.

Abstract: The vast majority of Oracle SQL books discuss some syntax, provide the barest rudiments of using Oracle SQL, and perhaps include a few simple examples. It might be enough to pass a survey course, or give you some buzz words to drop in conversation with real Oracle DBAs. But if you use Oracle SQL on a regular basis, you want much more. You want to access the full power of SQL to write queries in an Oracle environment. You want a solid understanding of what's possible with Oracle SQL, creative techniques for writing effective and accurate queries, and the practical, hands-on information that leads to true mastery of the language. Simply put, you want useful, expert best practices that can be put to work immediately, not just non-vendor specific overview or theory.Updated to cover the latest version of Oracle, Oracle 10g, this edition of the highly regarded Mastering Oracle SQL has a stronger focus on technique and on Oracle's implementation of SQL than any other book on the market. It covers Oracle s vast library of built-in functions, the full range of Oracle SQL query-writing features, regular expression support, new aggregate and analytic functions, subqueries in the SELECT and WITH clauses, multiset union operators, enhanced support for hierarchical queries: leaf and loop detection, and the CONNECT_BY_ROOT operator, new partitioning methods (some introduced in Oracle9i Release 2), and the native XML datatype, XMLType. Mastering Oracle SQL , 2nd Edition fills the gap between the sometimes spotty vendor documentation, and other books on SQL that just don't explore the full depth of what is possible with Oracle-specific SQL. For those who want to harness the untapped (and often overlooked) power of Oracle SQL, this essential guide for putting Oracle SQL to work will prove invaluable.

Abstract: For those of you who develop standalone Windows applications for PCs and other devices, Microsoft's .NET Windows Forms provide a much better way to get it done. This new technology gives you more power and flexibility for a fraction of the effort compared to classic Win32 development, with a streamlined programming model that deals automatically with many tedious details that once plagued developers. As with most things .NET, the only hitch is the learning curve. But that's where acclaimed author Jesse Liberty makes the difference with Programming .NET Windows Applications . With this tutorial, you will explore all aspects of using .NET Windows Forms class libraries and the associated programming tools in Visual Studio .NET, enabling you to build applications for the Windows 9x, Windows 2000 and Windows XP desktop platforms. Step-by-step, you'll learn ways to design applications that either function alone on a PC, or work in combination with your web-based application server to take advantage of the richer interface and higher level of security. The book also explains how your new Windows applications can sidestep problems that used to arise from the use of DLLs (known collectively as "DLL hell"), and how .NET Windows Forms can be used as an alternative to ASP.NET and browser-based approaches for building web application clients. Jesse Liberty definitely knows his stuff when it comes to the .NET platform. As the author of O'Reilly's Programming C# and Learning Visual Basic .NET , he's well-known for his clear and concise style that prompted one reviewer to say, "It's as if he knows exactly what questions I'm going to ask ahead of time." Jesse also co-authored Programming ASP.NET with contract programmer Dan Hurwitz, and now the two have teamed up again to bring you this comprehensive tutorial--without a doubt, the best source available for learning how to program with .NET Windows Forms.

Abstract: Starting with simple examples, you¿ll see how the multi-user, local area network applications that Visual FoxPro developers are used to building are constructed in Visual Basic .NET. You¿ll learn how to use Crystal Reports to build reports like the ones you build in FoxPro. You¿ll discover how to use DataAdapters and datasets instead of DBFs. You¿ll see examples of the paradigm shift that client-server programming imposes, and why .NET solves that problem (even when you wouldn¿t need to solve it in FoxPro.) And you¿ll learn how to give your FoxPro and Visual Basic applications smart client remote data access. You¿ll understand how to begin the construction of a database project in Visual Basic with a container form and a MainMenu instead of using _Screen and MSYSMENU. You¿ll learn how variables are declared and used; how menus are controlled; how to use events, and why you have to use events in VB when they¿re unnecessary in FoxPro. You¿ll learn how to build inheritable forms, Visual Basic¿s answer to FoxPro¿s form class templates, to reduce programming to a minimum. You¿ll learn why properties are like variables in FoxPro, but more like functions in VB. And you¿ll learn where Visual Basic adds features that you didn¿t have in FoxPro and didn¿t know that you needed. You¿ll learn where to look for all of those FoxPro commands and functions that you need. And in case you haven¿t yet used SQL Server with FoxPro, the examples will demonstrate how it¿s done first in FoxPro, then in VB .NET. Shows how to build a typical application in Visual FoxPro, including DBF, SQL Server and Internet access; then demonstrates how to build the same type of application in VB .NET Highlights the main differences in specific issues, including printing, events, data access, creation and use of properties Contains an appendix listing the principal FoxPro commands and functions and their Visual Basic equivalents Includes a table showing where to find the settings in the FoxPro¿s Tools, Options menu pages in VB .NET Shows how to access data remotely from your FoxPro and VB .NET applications Explains how project DLLs are created and used in other projects within a solution Shows how to use middle tier business objects to simplify ongoing development Source code downloadable from www.samspublishing.com
