In einen neuerdings erkennbaren Aufbruch hin zur Thematik »Gott« in der neutestamentlichen Forschung reiht sich dieser Band zum Gottesbild im Johannesevangelium ein. Den Beiträgen geht es um den Blick auf Gott selbst. Hier war es Ziel, sich auf die Konturen des Gottesbildes im Johannesevangelium zu konzentrieren und dieses aus unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln – auch im Vergleich mit anderen johanneischen Schriften und paulinischem Denken – zu beleuchten. Which were the different ways of making gods visible, and the specific functions of these representations? Might these material and visual representations help us to better understand official cults, as well as private cults? What was the role of images in the royal cult? Was the king the only “image” of the gods, or could all humans fulfill this role? Why were cult images forbidden? Does the biblical prohibition have any precedent or parallel in the ancient Near-East, or elsewhere? And how do the ways of representing gods and humans change in the absence of cultic images? The conference Representing Gods and Humans in the Ancient Near-East and in the Bible, held at the Collège de France, Paris, on May 5-6 2015, sought to shed light on these questions surrounding the image, a critical issue for our understanding of ancient as well as modern religions

    Abstract: Die Europa-Idee, die in den Nachkriegsjahren wirksam war, ist heute verdunstet. Diese Idee war stark geprägt vom Christentum, dem der alte Kontinent seine geistige Einheit verdankt. Die Institutionen des Christentums sind dabei konkurrierenden Interessen ihrer Mitglieder ausgesetzt, verlieren deren Zustimmung in unterschiedlicher Weise und haben das konfliktträchtige Potential ihrer konfessionellen Vielfalt noch nicht ganz überwunden. Daneben haben sogenannte fundamentalistische Richtungen innerhalb traditioneller Weltreligionen – in Europa außer dem Christentum auch das Judentum und der Islam – regen Zulauf. Der Band hinterfragt die traditionelle Rolle religiöser Werte für die Union, ihre Transformation in der Geschichte und behandelt ihre Gegenwart und Zukunft. Letzteres tut er zum einen mit Hinblick auf die Frage nach der Zugehörigkeit des Islam zu Europa – in seiner gegenwärtigen Präsenz als auch in seinem historisch-kulturellen und philosophischen Einfluss –, zum anderen im Vergleich zwischen der (in sich noch unterschiedlichen) europäischen Konzeption des Verhältnisses von Religion und Staat und anderer westlicher Staaten, namentlich den USA

    Abstract: Friedhöfe sind Trauerorte und langlebige Biotope des regionalen Gedächtnisses. Denn Grabmale erzählen nicht nur Familiengeschichte, sondern auch Stadtgeschichte. Die Geschichte eines Gemeinwesens ist immer auch die Geschichte von Toten und Totengedenken. Die Toten und ihre letzten Ruhestätten gehören nicht nur den Angehörigen. Im kulturellen Gedächtnis mischen sich Privates und Öffentliches, Grabstelle und öffentlicher Raum. Gedächtnis bekommt hier eine räumliche Gestalt, es kann begangen werden. Kirchen und Kommunen sind als Friedhofsträger und Erinnerungsgemeinschaften herausgefordert, diese Bedarfe in eine sinnvolle Gestalt zu überführen. In interdisziplinärer Weite werden aus sozialwissenschaftlicher, kulturwissenschaftlicher und theologischer Perspektive die sepulkral-memorialen Formen diskutiert und ausgelotet.

    Abstract: Modern Chinese history told from a Buddhist perspective restores the vibrant, creative role of religion in postimperial China.     Abstract: The debate over the compatibility of Confucian culture with democracy is an ongoing one. Yet, few books in the existing literature have dealt specifically with the relationship between Confucian culture (as opposed to Confucianism or general cultural factors) and democracy. Prior to the end of the Second World War, no Confucian society was democratic, so the debate could only be done in an abstract sense. Only after the war did Japan emerge as a democratic country, and it is not a perfect case of the Confucian culture - for one, its Confucian legacy is diluted; moreover, its postwar transition to democracy was, to a large extent, externally imposed rather than internally generated. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, South Korea and Taiwan joined what Samuel P Huntington termed the "hird wave of democratization". Finally, at least two societies with strong Confucian heritage turned democratic, and unlike Japan, their democratic transition resulted mainly from internal political dynamics. Confucian Culture and Democracy represents a comprehensive effort to examine the linkages between Confucian culture and democracy. Building on the empirical evidence from South Korea and Taiwan, and examining semi-democratic societies with extensive experiences in electoral politics like Singapore and Hong Kong, this book provides readers with an empirical and detailed coverage of democratization and democratic governance in various Confucian societies. Japan - as a country influenced by Confucianism, is also analyzed, together with China - whether China joins the family of democratic states is undoubtedly an important concern for many in the region and beyond

    Abstract: In these conference proceedings particular attention is paid to the performance of burials and burial rites between 1300 and 750 BC. A change in burial customs took place in large parts of central Europe during the 13th century BC. The dead were no longer buried in inhumation graves - as was customary until then - but were burned and laid to rest in urns. This transformation of burial customs is probably connected to far reaching changes in society and religious beliefs
    Abstract: In dem vorliegenden Kongressband werden Bestattung und Ritual in der Region zwischen Mitteleuropa und Griechenland zwischen 1300 und 750 v. Chr. besondere Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt. Im 13. Jahrhundert v. Chr. fand in weiten Teilen Mitteleuropas eine radikale Veränderung der Grabsitten statt. Die Toten wurden nicht mehr, wie bis dahin üblich, in Körpergräbern bestattet, sondern verbrannt und in Urnen beigesetzt. Es ist wahrscheinlich, dass sich hinter dem Wandel des Begräbnisrituals weitreichende Veränderungen der Gesellschaft und der religiösen Vorstellungen verbergen

    Abstract: Die Wende von 1989 bzw. 1991 hat die Religionsgemeinschaften in den ehemals kommunistischen Staaten Südosteuropas auf die Bühne der politischen Öffentlichkeit zurückgebracht. Sie wurden aufgewertet, aber nicht unbedingt in spiritueller, sondern in institutioneller, politischer und nationaler Hinsicht. Heute, zwei Jahrzehnte nach der Wende, erheben die Religionsgemeinschaften Südosteuropas häufig den Führungsanspruch in der Gesellschaft – nicht nur in religiöser und moralischer, sondern auch in national-politischer Hinsicht. Bei ihren Versuchen, die Gesellschaft zu sakralisieren, profanisieren sie sich jedoch häufig selbst. Mit diesen Phänomenen befassen sich die in diesem Band enthaltenen Beiträge, die in Form von Referaten im Rahmen der vom 16. bis 18.     Abstract: "The growing connections between media, culture, and religion are increasingly evident in our society today but have rarely been linked theoretically until now. Beginning with the decline of religious institutions during the latter part of the 20th century, Rethinking Media, Religion, and Culture focuses on issues such as the increasing autonomy and individualized practice of religion, the surge of media and media-based icons that are often imbued with religious qualities, and the ensuing effect on cultural practices. Editors Stewart M. Hoover and Knut Lundby examine each of these issues and the implicatiors of major recent findings of religious, media, and cultural studies as they pertain to one another. In a primary effort, the leading class of contributors to this work effectively triangulate these three separate areas into a coherent whole.     Abstract: The articles included in this Yearbook of the Sociology of Islam are focused on two perspectives: Some link the comparative analysis of Islam to ongoing debates on the Axial Age and its role in the formation of major civilizational complexes, while others are more concerned with the historical constellations and sources involved in the formation of Islam as a religion and a civilization.More than any other particular line of inquiry, new historical and sociological approaches to the Axial Age revived the idea of comparative civilizational analysis and channeled it into more specific projects. An exegesis which takes the final canonical text seriously undertakes to understand the structure and theological intention of this unity. The papers collected here attempt to reveal significant structures which overarch the individual components. Particular emphasis is placed on the reconstruction of thematic threads which are created when individual prophets take up topics from their predecessors (e.g. Jehovah's Day, conversion, role of the peoples) and intensify them. The papers were written between 1999 and 2002 under the aegis of the Society of Biblical Literature's Working Group on The Formation of the Book of the Twelve , Main description: Seit einigen Jahren hat sich die Auffassung durchgesetzt, dass das Zwölfprophetenbuch eine planvoll gestaltete literarische Großeinheit ist. Eine den kanonischen Endtext ernst nehmende Exegese macht sich zur Aufgabe, diese Einheit in Aufbau und theologischem Anliegen zu verstehen. Die versammelten Beiträge gehen signifikanten, die Einzelschriften übergreifenden Strukturen nach. Besonderes Gewicht wird auf die Rekonstruktion thematischer Fäden gelegt, die dadurch entstehen, dass die einzelnen Propheten Themen ihrer Vorgänger (z.B. Tag Jahwes, Umkehr, Rolle der Völker) aufgreifen und neu zuspitzen.     Abstract: During the 1920s much attention was paid to the history of Jews in Germany since the Enlightenment and the subject became popular again, with renewed emphasis, after 1945. Many historians were deeply committed to understanding and explaining the tragic path that led from the emancipation of the Jews to the Holocaust. For a long time, much less work was done on the history of Jews in Germany in earlier periods, particularly the period between the late Middle Ages and the Enlightenment. This book is the first comprehensive account of Jewish-Gentile relations in central Europe from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century. It lays particular emphasis on cultural, economic, social, and political issues, and incorporates much new research

    Abstract: The Jains have exerted an influence on Indian Society and religion out of proportion with their relatively small numbers. The Assembly of Listeners: Jains in Society addresses the sociology of the Jains and discusses the notion of the 'community' based on religious affiliation in India. Topics covered include Jain ideals and identity; women in the Jains community; popular Jainism; Jain reform and Jain identity in the UK. This collection is an important theoretical addition to the study of Indian society, which has previously focused mainly on caste and class politics as the fundamental social units.
