    Abstract: Cairo Pop is the first book to examine the dominant popular music of Egypt, shababiyya. Scorned or ignored by scholars and older Egyptians alike, shababiyya plays incessantly in Cairo, even while Egyptian youth joined in mass protests against their government, which eventually helped oust longtime Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak in early 2011. Living in Cairo at the time of the revolution, Daniel Gilman saw, and more importantly heard, the impact that popular music can have on culture and politics. Here he contributes a richly ethnographic analysis of the relationship between mass-mediated popular music, modernity, and nationalism in the Arab world.Before Cairo Pop, most scholarship on the popular music of Egypt focused on musiqa al-ṭarab. Immensely popular in the 1950s and '60s and even into the '70s, musiqa al-ṭarab adheres to Arabic musical theory, with non-Western scales based on tunings of the strings of the 'ud-the lute that features prominently, nearly ubiquitously, in Arabic music. However, today one in five Egyptians is between the ages of 15 and 24; half the population is under the age of 25. And shababiyya is their music of choice. By speaking informally with dozens of everyday young people in Cairo, Gilman comes to understand shababiyya as more than just a musical genre: sometimes it is for dancing or seduction, other times it propels social activism, at others it is simply sonic junk food.In addition to providing a clear Egyptian musical history as well as a succinct modern political history of the nation, Cairo Pop elevates the aural and visual aesthetic of shababiyya-and its role in the lives of a nation's youth

    Abstract: Dieser Band zeigt, dass sich gerade im Zusammenwirken unterschiedlicher Disziplinen ein gehaltvoller Begriff raumzeitlicher Organisation in den Künsten und über sie hinaus konturieren lässt.Im Zentrum steht dabei der Begriff des Rhythmus, der in den verschiedenen künstlerischen Disziplinen, aber auch in der Geschichte und der Kulturwissenschaft von Bedeutung ist. Die Beiträge gehen dem im Zusammenhang mit den damit verbundenen Begriffen der Balance und des Metrums nach, wobei sie weitergehende theoretische Perspektiven formulieren, die selbst in der Musikwissenschaft ein Desiderat sind.
    Abstract: This volume demonstrates that a richer notion of spatiotemporal organization in the arts and beyond can allow contouring, especially in the interaction of different disciplines. Central to this is the concept of rhythm, which is meaningful for various artistic disciplines as well as history and cultural studies. The contributions follow up on the related concepts of balance and of meter, whereupon they formulate further theoretical perspectives which are a desideratum even in musicology.

    Abstract: Amy Absher’s The Black Musician and the White City tells the story of African American musicians in Chicago during the mid-twentieth century. While depicting the segregated city before World War II, Absher traces the migration of black musicians, both men and women and both classical and vernacular performers, from the American South to Chicago during the 1930s to 1950s. Absher takes the history beyond the study of jazz and blues by examining the significant role that classically trained black musicians played in building the Chicago South Side community. By acknowledging the presence and importance of classical musicians, Absher argues that black migrants in Chicago had diverse education and economic backgrounds but found common cause in the city’s music community.

    Abstract: Dieser Band bündelt erstmals aktuelle Arbeiten zur Popgeschichte und macht das Thema Pop als relevanten Forschungsgegenstand der Zeitgeschichte sichtbar. Mit Fallstudien aus vier Jahrzehnten, die von politischer Mobilisierung über technische Innovation und Vermarktung bis zur Körperbildung reichen, zeigt er ein breites Spektrum möglicher Zugänge anhand exemplarischer Beispiele auf. Zudem bildet die Textsammlung ein Korrektiv zu Ansätzen der Literatur-, Kultur- und Medienwissenschaften, die sich Popkultur in erster Linie über Theoriebildung nähern und nur selten auf breiter empirischer Quellengrundlage arbeiten

    Abstract: With famous music manuscripts such as the St Emmeram codex or the Trent codices and the rise of a musical elite with singer-composers around Dufay and Binchois, the years around 1430 belong to a crucial period in late-medieval music history. The present volume comprises 13 case studies on polyphonic as well as monophonic repertories with a particular focus on the city of Vienna. For the first time, the ‘simultaneity’ of ‘non-simultaneous’ phenomena is scrutinized for Central Europe and for the cultural exchange with neighbouring territories of the Holy Roman Empire, of England, Bohemia and Northern Italy.Due to its specific urban profile and the geographical position, late-medieval Vienna offers an excellent starting point for the study of musical repertories in Central Europe and their appropriation as cultural practice in the first half of the fifteenth century. The ‘simultaneity’ of ‘non-simultaneous’ phenomena is closely connected to the coexistence of different patterns of music patronage within court and nobility, the university, a variety of ecclesiastical institutions (among them the collegiate church of All Saints, later St Stephen’s Cathedral), and diverse strands of upper- and middle-class citizens on the one hand, cultural exchange with neighbouring territories of the Holy Roman Empire, of England, Bohemia and Northern Italy on the other. Manifold strands of polyphonic and monophonic repertories (both sacred and profane), compositional techniques, regionally bound stylistic peculiarities, strategems of music patronage, institutional (or even personal) collectionism, furthermore aspects of music iconography and the role of music within the history of ideas are scrutinized in thirteen chapters, which are conceived as case-studies, plus a detailed thematical introduction. In sum, this is an invaluable contribution to a better understanding of a crucial period of late-medieval music history

    Abstract: Was sind die Widerstaendigkeiten des Jazz? Zu dieser Frage haben sich im Laufe der Jazzgeschichte zwei zentrale Interpretationen herausgebildet. So gilt Jazz einerseits als afroamerikanische Subversion gegen rassistische Unterdrueckung. Andererseits wird das emanzipatorische Potential dieser Musik gerne der Improvisation zugeschrieben. Anhand von historischem Material und Interviews mit Jazzmusikern geht der Autor diesen etablierten Selbstverstaendlichkeiten des Jazz kritisch nach und untersucht die Dialektik von Herrschaft und Befreiung unter kulturindustriellen Imperativen.

Diesen professionellen Reflexions- und Entwicklungsprozess soll dieser Band unterstützen, indem er fragt, welche Ausgrenzungsphänomene es in den Angeboten, Projekten und Programmen der Kulturellen Bildung gibt und welche spezifischen Möglichkeiten künstlerische und kulturpädagogische Praxis bietet, um Ausgrenzung zu erkennen und zu ihrer Überwindung beizutragen.     Abstract: Rap, techno, électro, house, jungle, trip hop... ces styles musicaux se sont installés dans le paysage discographique français depuis la fin des années 1990. À travers les succès commerciaux retentissants ou les coups d'éclat de leurs animateurs, ils sont apparus comme des fenêtres ouvertes sur les plaisirs, les désirs et les maux de la jeunesse. « Jeunes », les musiques rap et électroniques le sont en effet à double titre : filles d'esthétiques postmodernes et de bricolages technologiques dernier cri, elles sont aussi sociologiquement attachées à l'adolescence et à l'entrée dans la vie adulte. En montrant ces « nouveaux »musiciens au travail, l'auteur entraîne le lecteur loin des clichés réducteurs associant ces cultures musicales à une « perte de repères » ou à une mauvaise humeur à la mode. L'articulation entre création artistique et critique sociale, l'invention et la diffusion de modèles d'organisation alternatifs en matière de production discographique sont mises au jour. In Softly, with Feeling, Edward Berger tells Wilder's remarkable story from his youth in working-class Philadelphia and his apprenticeship in the big bands, to his experience as one of the first 1,000 black Marines during World War II, and his achievements in the worlds of jazz, classical, and popular music. Reminiscences by Wilder and his colleagues, including renowned Philadelphia-area musicians Jimmy Heath and Buddy DeFranco help place Wilder's experiences within a broader context of American musical and social history. Wilder's modesty and ability to perform in many musical genres may have prevented him from achieving popular recognition, but in Softly, with Feeling, his legacy and contributions to music and culture are assured. - Edward Berger is a writer/photographer, whose other books include "Benny Carter: A Life in American Music" (with Morroe Berger and James Patrick) and "Bassically Speaking: An Oral History of George Duvivier". He produced two Grammy-winning albums for jazz great Benny Carter, has been a long-time cohost of Jazz from the Archives on WBGO-FM, Newark, and regularly teaches at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Swing University. He retired as Associate Director of the Rutgers Institute of Jazz Studies in 2011, but continues to serve IJS as a consultant.
