    Abstract: "Thousands of intact ceramic bowls and plates as well as fragments made in the medieval Byzantine empire survive to this day. Decorated with figural and non-figural imagery applied in a variety of techniques and adorned with colourful paints and glazes, the vessels can tell us much about those who owned them and those who looked at them. In addition to innumerable ceramic vessels, a handful of precious metal bowls and plates survive from the period. Together, these objects make up the art of dining in medieval Byzantium. This art of dining was effervescent, at turns irreverent and deadly serious, visually stunning and fun. It is suggestive of ways in which those viewing the objects used a quotidian and biologically necessary (f)act - that of eating - to reflect on their lives and deaths, their aspirations and their realities. This book examines the ceramic and metal vessels in terms of the information offered on the foods eaten, the foods desired and their status; the spectacle of the banquet; the relationship between word and image in medieval Byzantium; the dangers of taste; the emergence of new moral and social ideals; and the use of dining as a tool in constructing and enforcing hierarchy. This book is of appeal to scholarly and non-scholarly audiences interested in the art and material culture of the medieval period and in the social history of food and eating"--

    Abstract: Poverty and inequality have pervaded British society to this day, but this has not always been self-evident to contemporaries - popular understandings have depended on existing knowledge. Inequality Knowledge provides the first detailed history of the numbers about the gap between rich and poor. It shows how they were produced, used, and suppressed at times, and how activists, scientists, and journalists eventually wrestled control over the figures from the state. The book traces the making and the politics of statistical knowledge about economic inequality in the United Kingdom from the post-war era to the 1990s. What kind of knowledge was available to contemporaries about socio-economic disparities in Britain and how they evolved over time? How was this knowledge produced and by whom? What did policy makers and civil servants know about the extent of poverty and inequality in British society and to what extent did they take the distributional impact of their social and fiscal policies into account? Far from just a technical matter, inequality knowledge had far-reaching implications for key debates and the wider political culture in contemporary Britain. Historicizing inequality knowledge speaks to a long tradition of historical research about social class divisions and cultural representations of economic disparities in twentieth-century Britain.

    Abstract: Obdachlose gehören zum städtischen Alltag. Sie sind sichtbar und werden zugleich kaum wahrgenommen. Nadine Recktenwald blickt in die historischen Räume der Obdachlosen wie Asyle, Notunterkünfte und selbstangeeignete Orte. Sie untersucht deren Erfahrungen mit urbanen Strukturen, sozialstaatlichen Maßnahmen und gesellschaftlicher In- und Exklusion. In der Weimarer Republik profitierten Obdachlose erstmals von kommunaler Sozialfürsorge. Zugleich blieb Obdachlosigkeit bis 1974 ein Straftatbestand. Diese Ambivalenz zwischen Fürsorge und Strafe ermöglichte Handlungsspielräume für die Betroffenen ebenso wie für die staatlichen Akteure. Insbesondere aber nicht nur im Nationalsozialismus wurden Obdachlose verdrängt und verfolgt. Mit einem raumanalytischen Ansatz, umfangreichen Quellen und Einzelbiografien erforscht die Autorin, wie Obdachlose spezifische soziale Praktiken ausbildeten, um ihre gesellschaftliche Position zu beeinflussen. Eindrucksvoll zeigt sie die Interaktionen der Betroffenen untereinander ebenso wie mit Ämtern, der Justiz und den städtischen Öffentlichkeiten. Eine aufschlussreiche Sozial- und Stadtgeschichte der Obdachlosen in der Weimarer Republik, im Nationalsozialismus und in der Bundesrepublik.

In ihnen finden sich metrische und harmonisch-melodische Konzepte sowie grundlegende Neuerungen in der Organisation des Zusammenspiels und im Umgang mit improvisierter Musik, die heute fester Bestandteil des Jazz sind. Der Autor geht den Ursprüngen und Vorläufern dieser Konzepte nach, untersucht die biografischen Bezüge der Protagonisten zu den Konzepten und zum Zeitgeist und betrachtet die Rezeptionsgeschichte der Alben.
    Abstract: The year 1959 saw the release of Dave Brubeck's "Time Out", John Coltrane's "Giant Steps", Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue", Bill Evans' "Portrait in Jazz" and Ornette Coleman's "The Shape of Jazz to Come", all style-defining albums that were groundbreaking in the development of jazz. They contain metrical and harmonic-melodic concepts as well as fundamental innovations in the organisation of ensemble playing and the handling of improvised music, which are an integral part of jazz today. The author traces the origins and antecedents of these concepts, examines the protagonists' biographical references to the concepts and the zeitgeist, and looks at the reception history of the albums.

    Abstract: This volume brings together a series of discussions by scholars from a range of disciplinary, (trans)regional and epistemic perspectives that came out of the Berlin-based "co2libri" networking initiative, with longstanding collaborative partners based in the global South. "Co2libri" stands for "conceptual collaboration: living borderless research interaction". As an interdisciplinary and transregional oriented initiative, co2libri envisages a multicentric perspective that integrates neglected positions of Southern theory and praxis into the heart of academic conversations. Co2libri’s collaborative endeavor builds on long-standing active connections with partners in Africa, South and Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. Instead of setting an agenda from the North, it proposes to figure out ways forward through collaborative engagement, building on relationships of mutual trust. Using formats that facilitate substantial and open-ended discussion, we are re-thinking theory and method, academic practices, and research ethics, while keeping material inequalities in view.

    Abstract: Die zahlreichen Schicksale der Verfolgten des Nationalsozialismus sind faktenreich belegt, stehen aber im Spannungsfeld zur regionalen Erinnerungskultur nach 1945. Was bedeuten diese Spannungen heute? Maria Anna Willer untersucht Strukturen und Prozesse der Ausgrenzung in der Face-to-Face-Gesellschaft eines Dorfes am bayrischen Alpenrand zur Zeit der NS-Herrschaft und beleuchtet dessen Erinnerungskultur. In Anlehnung an Foucault beschreibt sie im Modell eines »Dispositivs der NS-Verfolgung« die engmaschigen Strukturen der Kontrolle und Überwachung sowie Widerstand und Hilfeleistungen als Kategorien der NS-Diktatur auf dem Dorf. Es zeigt sich: Nach 1945 ist eine Kontinuität der Ausgrenzung erkennbar, wenn die Erinnerung an Opfer der NS-Verfolgung verdrängt wird.

    Abstract: "What is Colonialism? develops a clear and rigorous account of what colonialism is and how it works. It draws on and synthesizes recent work in cognitive science, affective science, and social psychology, along with Marxism and related forms of analysis. Hogan begins with some fundamental conceptual distinctions, such as the degree to which a group shares beliefs, dispositions, and skills versus the degree to which they share identification with a category. Building on these distinctions, he defines colonialism in terms of political, economic, and cultural autonomy, clarifying the nature of culture and autonomy particularly. He goes on to articulate an invaluable systematic account of the varieties of colonialism. The final chapters outline the motives of imperialists, differentiating these from their ideological rationalizations, and sketching the harms caused by colonialism.     Abstract: Klappentext: Das Gräberfeld mit 208 Brand- und 49 Körperbestattungen war vom ausgehenden 1. Jh. n. Chr. bis in den Beginn des 5. Jhs. belegt und gibt einen Einblick in Bestattungsbrauchtum und Beigabensitten in einer ländlichen Nekropole über mehr als 300 Jahre hindurch. Neben einer archäologisch-kulturhistorischen Auswertung beinhaltet die Arbeit naturwissenschaftliche Analysen von Textilresten, Farbpigmenten sowie menschlichen Knochen und Tierknochen.
    Abstract: Klappentext engl.: The cemetery with 208 cremations and 49 inhumations was in use from the end of the 1st Century AD until the beginning of the 5th Century AD and provides an insight into burial customs and burial rites in a rural necropolis aver a period of more than 300 years. In addition to an archaeological-cultural-historical evaluation, the work includes scientific analyses oftextile remains, colour pigments and human and animal bones.

    Abstract: Wer das Berliner Olympiagelände besucht, stolpert unweigerlich über das Fortwirkungen der NS-Monumentalität des Geländes – und auch über ihre bis heute weitgehend ungebrochene Tradierung von völkischer und antisemitischer Monumentalität. Die Kritik daran ist vielfältig, aber bisher eher lose verwoben: Wo steht die Debatte – oder: wo stehen die Debatten? Welche Perspektiven gibt es, aus historischer, musealer, künstlerischer, politischer, sportlicher oder denkmalschützender Perspektive? Wo lassen sich Brücken der Kritik schlagen, wo sind unterschiedliche Perspektiven widersprüchlich, an welchen Stellen bedarf es grundlegender Neuorientierung oder Neujustierung der Debatte? Der Sammelband versucht, diese Fragen anzureißen, Wege der Auseinandersetzung zu skizzieren oder zu initiieren, aber auch grundlegende Probleme zu benennen.
    Abstract: Anyone who visits Berlin’s Olympic Park will inevitably stumble across the continued effects of the site's Nazi monumentality—and also its largely unbroken tradition of ethnic and anti-Semitic monumentality. The criticism of this is diverse, but so far rather loosely interwoven: Where does the debate stand—or, indeed, where do the debates stand? What views are there from the perspectives of history, museums, art, politics, sport or monument protection? Where can bridges of criticism be built, where are the different perspectives contradictory, and where is fundamental reorientation or readjustment of the debate(s) required? This anthology attempts to address these questions, not only to outline or initiate paths of debate but also to identify fundamental problems.

Moreover, the court constituted a forceful nexus in the social world, which was central to the legitimacy and authority of rulership. As such, courts shaped European politics and culture: architecture, art, fashion, patronage, and cultural exchanges were integral to the spectacle of European courts. Researchers have convincingly emphasised the public nature of courtly events, procedures, and ceremonies. Nevertheless, court life also involved pockets of privacy, which have yet to be systematically addressed. This edited collection addresses this lacuna and offers interpretations that urge us to reassesses the public nature of European courts. Thus, the proposed publication will fertilise the grounds for a discussion of the past and future of court studies.     Abstract: This book focuses on the development of bilateral Jewish-Muslim relations in London and Amsterdam since the late-1980s. It offers a comparative analysis that considers both similarities and differences, drawing on historical, social scientific, and religious studies perspectives. The authors address how Jewish-Muslim relations are related to the historical and contemporary context in which they are embedded, the social identity strategies Jews and Muslims and their institutions employ, and their perceived mutual positions in terms of identity and power. The first section reflects on the history and current profile of Jewish and Muslim communities in London and Amsterdam and the development of relations between Jews andMuslims in both cities. The second section engages with sources of conflict and cooperation. Four specific areas that cause tension are explored: the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; antisemitism and Islamophobia; attacks by extremists; and the commemoration of wars and genocides. In addition to ‘trigger events’, what stands out is the influence of historical factors, public opinion, the ‘mainstream’ Christian churches and the media, along with the role of government.     Abstract: Archival research into policing and surveillance of migrant women illuminates pressing contemporary issues. Examining little-known policing archives in France, Senegal, and Cambodia, Jennifer Anne Boittin unearths the stories of hundreds of women labelled 'undesirable' by the French colonial police and society in the early 20th century. These 'undesirables' were often women travelling alone, women who were poor or ill, women of colour, or women whose intimate lives were deemed unruly. In considering how ordinary women pursued autonomy, security, companionship, or simply a better existence in the face of surveillance and control, 'Undesirable' illuminates pressing contemporary issues of migration and violence.

    Abstract: 2014 konnte Ulrich Trebbin aufdecken, dass die Guillotine, mit der die Geschwister Scholl ermordet wurden, seit Jahrzehnten im Depot des Bayerischen Nationalmuseums in München vor der Öffentlichkeit verborgen wurde. Im Königreich Bayern wurden damit Menschen hingerichtet, die aus Lust, Hass oder Habgier gemordet hatten. Ab 1933 dann eliminierte der NS-Staat mit der Guillotine vor allem sogenannte "Volksschädlinge" und Widerstandskämpfer. Bekannt sind vielen noch die Mitglieder der Weißen Rose oder der "Räuber Kneißl", doch die allermeisten der insgesamt mehr als 1.300 Opfer des Fallbeils sind heute vergessen. 1945 schließlich ließ der Staat die Guillotine von der Bildfläche verschwinden. Bis heute. Denn sie ist mit einem Ausstellungsverbot belegt, und niemand darf sie sehen. Dieses Buch erzählt die Geschichte dieses schrecklichen und spannenden Gegenstandes - mit Fingerspitzengefühl, ohne Sensationsgier.

    Abstract: Since 1945, medical advancements and demographic change have fundamentally altered the end of life. Florian Greiner traces the different responses in East and West: the emergence of hospice movements and palliative medicine, the fight for assisted dying, and churches' search for religious meaning. His pioneering study starts with the experiences of World War II and ends with the reunified Federal Republic.
    Abstract: Tod und Sterben entwickelten sich in der Zeitgeschichte zu zentralen gesellschaftlichen Konfliktthemen. Wo war der beste Ort zum Sterben? Wie lange sollte das Leben mit Hilfe der modernen Medizin verlängert werden? Was brauchte der Mensch für einen „guten Tod"? Und durfte über ein vermeintliches Tabuthema überhaupt gesprochen werden? Die Pionierstudie von Florian Greiner untersucht erstmals die Auseinandersetzungen um das Lebensende in beiden deutschen Staaten und der wiedervereinten Bundesrepublik. Greiner zeigt, wie sehr das Sterben nach 1945 zum Gegenstand religiöser, politischer und ökonomischer Deutungskämpfe wurde. Kirchen, Pharmaindustrie, Gesundheitspolitik, Medizin, Sozialwissenschaften, Massenmedien und neue zivilgesellschaftliche Organisationen wie die Hospiz- und Sterbehilfebewegung stritten über das Lebensende. Mittels vieler zuvor unerschlossener Quellen aus staatlichen, kirchlichen und privaten Archiven zeigt Greiner, wie die „Entdeckung des Sterbens" das Selbstverständnis moderner Gesellschaften prägte - und wie sehr die Erfahrungen unserer Gegenwart dadurch beeinflusst werden.

    Abstract: This volume presents an overview of methodologies to identify and study foodways in the archaeological record. It also includes definitions, information, and examples for students and professionals to understand the basic analytical approaches, methods, and themes critical to archaeological studies of foodways. One of the main goals of this book is to show that foodways can help us better understand many aspects of a culture and can be studied from the material culture recovered from archaeological sites. It is important to stress that foodways are, and should be, studied by more than zooarchaeologists and paleoethnobotanists. Foodways encompass the biological and cultural need for sustenance, and thus are a research area that incorporates a multitude of artifact types, analytical specialties, and research questions. Foodways are a tangled web of ideas and behaviors that structure diet, subsistence strategies, cuisines, and the use of food to express identity. While foodstuffs are primary components to foodways, the consumption of material foods is inherently social. Food, dishes, and cuisines are expressions of the people, culture, and time in which they are created. Foodways Archaeology is devoted specifically to the archaeological study of the intersection of food, culture, history, and traditions as viewed in the archaeological record

    Abstract: Burma's Pop Music Industry is the first book to explore the contemporary pop music industry in a country that is little known or understood in the West. Based on years of fieldwork in Burma/Myanmar, Heather MacLachlan's work explores the ways in which aspiring musical artists are forging a place within the highly repressive social and political context that is Burma today. It deals sensitively with issues such as negotiating local and global styles,performance contexts and practices, and, more importantly, with ethical issues such as the anonymity of informants and the place of Western ethnomusicologists in countries outside the West.
