    Abstract: "The distinctive sound of the swing-driven guitar style of Django Reinhardt has become almost synonymous with a carefree, bohemian Frenchness to fans all over the world. However, we in the US refer to his music using a telling designation: Django is known here as the father of gypsy jazz. In France, the cultural significance of the musical style--called jazz manouche in reference to his origins in the Manouche subgroup of Romanies (known pejoratively as "Gypsies")--is fraught both for the Manouche and for the white French men and women eager to claim Django as a native son. In Django Generations, ethnomusicologist Siv B. Lie explores the complicated ways in which Django's legacy and jazz manouche express competing notions of what it means to be French. Though jazz manouche is overwhelmingly popular in France, Manouche people are more often treated as outsiders. However, some Manouche people turn to their musical heritage to gain acceptance in mainstream French society. Considering all of the characteristics and roles attributed to Django--as a world-renowned jazz musician, as an artistic pioneer, as a representative of French heritage, and as a Manouche--jazz manouche becomes a potent means for performers and listeners to articulate their relationships with French society, actual or hoped-for. Weaving together a history of jazz manouche and ethnographic fieldwork undertaken in the bars, festivals, family events, and cultural organizations where jazz manouche is performed and celebrated, Lie offers insight into how a musical genre can channel arguments about national and ethnoracial belonging. She argues that an uncomfortable cohabitation of Manouche identity and French identity lies at the heart of jazz manouche, which is what makes it so successful and powerful"--

    Abstract: "At the close of the Second World War, waves of African American musicians migrated to Paris, eager to thrive in its reinvigorated jazz scene. Jazz Diasporas challenges the notion that Paris was a color-blind paradise for African Americans. On the contrary, musicians...and African American artists based in Europe like writer and social critic James Baldwin...adopted a variety of strategies to cope with the cultural and social assumptions that greeted them throughout their careers in Paris, particularly in light of the cultural struggles over race and identity that gripped France as colonial conflicts like the Algerian War escalated. Through case studies of prominent musicians and thoughtful analysis of personal interviews, music, film, and literature, Rashida K. Braggs investigates the impact of this post-war musical migration. Examining a number of players in the jazz scene, including Sidney Bechet, Inez Cavanaugh, and Kenny Clarke, Braggs identifies how they performed both as musicians and as African Americans. The collaborations that they and other African Americans created with French musicians and critics complicated racial and cultural understandings of who could play and represent "authentic" jazz. Their role in French society challenged their American identity and illusions of France as a racial safe haven. In this post-war era of collapsing nations and empires, African American jazz players and their French counterparts destabilized set notions of identity.     Abstract: 'Sounds French' reveals how French society mediated the challenges of globalization through the consumption and production of popular music, itself increasingly an expression of globalized culture. As recorded music became more commonplace and crossed national boundaries in the second half of the twentieth century, French musicians and their audiences articulated new types of communal identities around popular music genres that reflected the impact of social, political, economic, and cultural transformations after the 1950s.

    Abstract: Rap, techno, électro, house, jungle, trip hop... ces styles musicaux se sont installés dans le paysage discographique français depuis la fin des années 1990. À travers les succès commerciaux retentissants ou les coups d'éclat de leurs animateurs, ils sont apparus comme des fenêtres ouvertes sur les plaisirs, les désirs et les maux de la jeunesse. « Jeunes », les musiques rap et électroniques le sont en effet à double titre : filles d'esthétiques postmodernes et de bricolages technologiques dernier cri, elles sont aussi sociologiquement attachées à l'adolescence et à l'entrée dans la vie adulte. En montrant ces « nouveaux »musiciens au travail, l'auteur entraîne le lecteur loin des clichés réducteurs associant ces cultures musicales à une « perte de repères » ou à une mauvaise humeur à la mode. L'articulation entre création artistique et critique sociale, l'invention et la diffusion de modèles d'organisation alternatifs en matière de production discographique sont mises au jour. Dans cet univers professionnel très actuel, la banalisation des « home-studios » et l'extension des responsabilités de l'artiste permettent en effet aux individus de faire carrière en multipliant les projets (de disques et de labels) et les casquettes (de musicien et de manager). Peinture vivante des relations de travail et au travail dans un milieu artistique fondé sur la mobilité, cet ouvrage permet enfin de comprendre les évolutions récentes du monde du disque vers une réactivité et une souplesse toujours plus grandes.

    Abstract: The Jazz Age. The phrase conjures images of Louis Armstrong holding court at the Sunset Cafe in Chicago, Duke Ellington dazzling crowds at the Cotton Club in Harlem, and star singers like Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey. But the Jazz Age was every bit as much of a Paris phenomenon as it was a Chicago and New York scene. In Paris Blues, Andy Fry provides an alternative history of African American music and musicians in France, one that looks beyond familiar personalities and well-rehearsed stories. He pinpoints key issues of race and nation in France's complicated jazz history from the 1920s through the 1950s. While he deals with many of the traditional icons such as Josephine Baker, Django Reinhardt, and Sidney Bechet, among others what he asks is how they came to be so iconic, and what their stories hide as well as what they preserve. Fry focuses throughout on early jazz and swing but includes its re-creation reinvention in the 1950s. Along the way, he pays tribute to forgotten traditions such as black musical theater, white show bands, and French wartime swing. Paris Blues provides a nuanced account of the French reception of African Americans and their music and contributes greatly to a growing literature on jazz, race, and nation in France.--

Politik und Medien warfen ihm vor, durch Gewalt verherrlichende Texte eine Mitverantwortung dafür zu tragen. Bis heute wird der französische Rap beschuldigt, Gewalt zu verherrlichen oder zu begünstigen, wie diverse Polemiken und Klagen gegen verschiedene Rapper illustrieren. Aber welchen Rap-Songs oder -Strömungen wird eigentlich von wem Gewalt unterstellt und warum? Sind diese Zuschreibungen musik-, textimmanent oder diskursiv begründet, oder beruhen sie gar auf einem Kommunikationsproblem? Diese Fragen beantwortet die Arbeit mit Hilfe von fünf Fallstudien aus dem aktuellen französischen Rap. Sie hinterfragt, auf welchen Ebenen der Songs Gewalt vorhanden, wie sie ausgeprägt ist, in welchem Kontext sie steht und wie sie von verschiedenen gesellschaftlichen Gruppen im öffentlichen Diskurs rezipiert wird.     Description / Table of Contents: Immigration has become a contentious issue in Europe in recent decades, with immigrants being accused of resisting integration and threatening the secular fabric of nationhood. The most extreme form of this unease has invented and demonized an Islamic 'other' within Europe. This book poses central questions about this global staging of difference. How has such anxiety increased exponentially since 9/11? Why has the Muslim veil been singled out as a metaphor in debates about citizenship? Lastly, and most fundamentally, who sets the criteria for constructing the ideal citizen? This study explores the issue of gender and immigration in the national contexts of Germany and France, where the largest minority populations are from Turkey and North Africa, respectively. The author analyzes fictional works by the Turkish-German writers Emine Sevgi Özdamar and Zafer Şenocak and by Francophone writer Malika Mokeddem. All three deconstruct binary oppositions and envision an alternate third space that allows them to break out of the confines of organized religion. In the latter part of the book, the voices of young Muslim women are foregrounded through interviews. The concluding chapter on the pedagogical tool Deliberative Dialogue suggests ways to navigate such contentious issues in the Humanities classroom

    Description / Table of Contents: While popular music and the mass media in France are firmly established areas of enquiry, there have been relatively few academic studies of the youth and popular music press. This book focuses on Salut les copains (Hi Buddies/Mates) (1962-76), which achieved a circulation of a million copies within its first year, at its peak sold around twice as many magazines as its nearest competitors, and has now become synonymous with the development of youth culture in 1960s France. In the few existing accounts of Salut les copains cultural commentators have tended to view the magazine as a neutral, apolitical vehicle for French yé-yé pop stars. However, this full-length study reveals how written texts in Salut les copains (editorial, letters and advertising) both supported and challenged dominant ideologies concerning culture, the nation, youth and gender during the turbulent 1960s and 1970s

    Abstract: In The Navigation of Feeling: A Framework for the History of Emotions, William M. Reddy offers a theory of emotions which both critiques and expands upon recent research in the fields of anthropology and psychology. Exploring the links between emotion and cognition, between culture and emotional expression, Reddy applies this theory of emotions to the processes of history. He demonstrates how emotions change over time, how emotions have a very important impact on the course of events, and how different social orders either facilitate or constrain emotional life. In an investigation of Revolutionary France, where sentimentalism in literature and philosophy had promised a new and unprecedented kind of emotional liberty, Reddy's theory of emotions and historical change is successfully put to the test

    Abstract: Rap, techno, électro, house, jungle, trip hop... ces styles musicaux se sont installés dans le paysage discographique français depuis la fin des années 1990. À travers les succès commerciaux retentissants ou les coups d’éclat de leurs animateurs, ils sont apparus comme des fenêtres ouvertes sur les plaisirs, les désirs et les maux de la jeunesse. « Jeunes », les musiques rap et électroniques le sont en effet à double titre : filles d’esthétiques postmodernes et de bricolages technologiques dernier cri, elles sont aussi sociologiquement attachées à l’adolescence et à l’entrée dans la vie adulte. En montrant ces « nouveaux »musiciens au travail, l’auteur entraîne le lecteur loin des clichés réducteurs associant ces cultures musicales à une « perte de repères » ou à une mauvaise humeur à la mode. L’articulation entre création artistique et critique sociale, l’invention et la diffusion de modèles d’organisation alternatifs en matière de production discographique sont mises au jour. Dans cet univers professionnel très actuel, la banalisation des « home-studios » et l’extension des responsabilités de l’artiste permettent en effet aux individus de faire carrière en multipliant les projets (de disques et de labels) et les casquettes (de musicien et de manager). Peinture vivante des relations de travail et au travail dans un milieu artistique fondé sur la mobilité, cet ouvrage permet enfin de comprendre les évolutions récentes du monde du disque vers une réactivité et une souplesse toujours plus grandes.
