    Abstract: How biodiversity classification, with its ranking of species, has social and political implications as well as implications for the field of information studies. The idea that species live in nature as pure and clear-cut named individuals is a fiction, as scientists well know. According to Robert D. Montoya, classifications are powerful mechanisms and we must better attend to the machinations of power inherent in them, as well as to how the effects of this power proliferate beyond the boundaries of their original intent. We must acknowledge the many ways our classifications are implicated in environmental, ecological, and social justice work-and information specialists must play a role in updating our notions of what it means to classify. In Power of Position, Montoya shows how classifications are systems that relateone entity with other entities, requiring those who construct a system to value an entity's relative importance-by way of its position-within a system of other entities. These practices, says Montoya, are important ways of constituting and exerting power. Classification also has very real-world consequences. An animal classified as protected and endangered, for example, is protected by law. Montoya also discusses the Catalogue of Life, a new kind of composite classification that reconciles many local ("traditional") taxonomies, forming a unified taxonomic backbone structure for organizing biological data. Finally, he shows how the theories of information studies are applicable to realms far beyond those of biological classification

    Abstract: Das Fahrrad ist das langlebigste und weitest verbreite Fahrzeug der Welt, von dem in seiner zweihundertjährigen Geschichte mehr als eine Milliarde Exemplare gebaut wurden. Erst seit dreißig Jahren haben eine internationale Konferenz und die mikrohistorische Feinarbeit der nationalen Vintage-Vereine quellenbasierte Erkenntnisse gesammelt, die einen neuen Blick auf die Fahrradgeschichte ermöglichen. Dieses Buch bietet erstmals eine länderübergreifende und umfassende Darstellung der technischen und historischen Entwicklung des Fahrrads von den frühesten Laufmaschinen als Reitpferdersatz bis hin zu modernen Rennrädern, Mountainbikes und Liegerädern. Es zeichnet die Entwicklung des Fahrrads auch anhand der einzelnen Komponenten wie Antrieben, Schaltungen, Federungen, Bremsen, Lichtanlagen, Speichenrädern und Luftreifen nach, die von Erfindern und Herstellern hinsichtlich Material, Ergonomie und Fahrphysik zuwege gebracht wurden.     Abstract: Die etwa 2.000 Klein- und Mittelstädte in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland sind ein wichtiger Bestandteil unseres Siedlungsnetzes. In ihnen lebt etwa die Hälfte der Einwohner des Landes. Zentrale Herausforderungen der Stadterneuerung in ihnen, wie der Strukturwandel in Handel und Gewerbe, der Verfall überkommener historischer Substanz, die Zunahme von Leerständen und Problemimmobilien und die allgemein sinkende Vitalität, werden häufig nicht aktiv genug bearbeitet. Vielerorts gibt es zwar sehr aktive Bürger*innen, die sich in Vereinen und informellen zivilgesellschaftlichen Netzwerken organisieren und intensiv in die Stadtentwicklung einbezogen werden wollen, doch Perspektivlosigkeit, Überalterung und Nachwuchsmangel und der Mangel an Ressourcen begrenzen oft ihre Möglichkeiten deutlich. Obwohl in den einzelnen Kommunen ein großer Wissens- und Erfahrungsschatz über neue Verfahren und Instrumente der Stadterneuerung vorhanden ist, sind gute Beispiele aus Klein- und Mittelstädten häufig wenig bekannt und wurden bisher nur in Ansätzen wissenschaftlich untersucht. Hier setzt der vorliegende Band mit seinem inhaltlichen Schwerpunkt auf der Situation der Stadterneuerung in Klein- und Mittelstädten an. Neben eher grundsätzlichen Beiträgen widmet er sich auch Erfahrungen aus der Praxis in ganz unterschiedlichen Förderkontexten. Die Herausgebenden Dr.-Ing. Uwe Altrock ist Professor für Stadterneuerung und Planungstheorie an der Universität Kassel. Dr.-Ing. Detlef Kurth ist Professor für Stadtplanung an der TU Kaiserslautern. Dr.-Ing.     Abstract: In India over the past century, electrification has meant many things: it has been a colonial gift of modern technology, a tool of national integration and political communication, and a means of gauging the country's participation in globalization. Electric lights have marked out places of power, and massive infrastructures have been installed in hopes of realizing political promises. In A Moral Technology, the grids and wires of an urban public utility are revealed to be not only material goods but also objects of intense moral concern. Leo Coleman offers a distinctive anthropological approach to electrification in New Delhi as more than just an economic or industrial process, or a "gridding" of social and political relations. It may be understood instead as a ritual action that has formed modern urban communities and people’s sense of citizenship, and structured debates over state power and political legitimacy.Coleman explores three historical and ethnographic case studies from the founding of New Delhi as an imperial capital city, to its reshaping as a national capital for post-independence India, up to its recent emergence as a contemporary global city. These case studies closely describe technological politics, rituals, and legal reforms at key moments of political change in India, and together they support Coleman’s argument that ritual performances, moral judgments, and technological installations combine to shape modern state power, civic life, and political community.

    Abstract: Am Anfang war Tacitus: Der römische Historiker schildert in seiner ›Germa­nia‹ die Gebiete östlich des Rheins wenig vorteilhaft als »durch Wälder grauenerre­gend«. Seine ›Annalen‹ berichten über eine Schlacht im »Teutoburger Wald« zwischen Römern und Germanen, deren Anführer Hermann der Cherusker zum »Be­freier Germaniens« geworden sei. Als dann im Zuge der Befreiungskriege um 1800 Anfänge eines deutschen Nationalbewusstseins entstehen, besinnen sich Dichter und Denker genau auf diesen anti-urbanen, naturnahen Waldmythos. Der Wald als unverbildete Natur wird zum deutschen Ideal – im Gegensatz zur verbildeten, städtischen Zivilisation Frankreichs.     Abstract: This book seeks to communicate to both a global and local audience, the key attributes of pre-industrial African metallurgy such as technological variation across space and time, methods of mining and extractive metallurgy and the fabrication of metal objects. These processes were transformative in a physical and metaphoric sense, which made them total social facts. Because the production and use of metals was an accretion of various categories of practice, a chaine operatoire conceptual and theoretical framework that simultaneously considers the embedded technological and anthropological factors was used. The book focuses on Africa’s different regions as roughly defined by cultural geography. On the one hand there is North Africa, Egypt, the Egyptian Sudan, and the Horn of Africa which share cultural inheritances with the Middle East and on the other is Africa south of the Sahara and the Sudan which despite interacting with the former is remarkably different in terms of technological practice. For example, not only is the timing of metallurgy different but so is the infrastructure for working metals and the associated symbolic and sociological factors. The cultural valuation of metals and the social positions of metal workers were different too although there is evidence of some values transfer and multi-directional technological cross borrowing. The multitude of permutations associated with metals production and use amply demonstrates that metals participated in the production and reproduction of society. Despite huge temporal and spatial differences there are so many common factors between African metallurgy and that of other regions of the world. For example, the role of magic and ritual in metal working is almost universal be it in Bolivia, Nepal, Malawi, Timna, Togo or Zimbabwe. Similarly, techniques of mining were constrained by the underlying geology but this should not in any way suggest that Africa’s metallurgy was derivative or that the continent had no initiative. Rather it demonstrates that when confronted with similar challenges, humanity in different regions of the world responded to identical challenges in predictable ways mediated as mediated by the prevailing cultural context. The success of the use of historical and ethnographic data in understanding variation and improvisation in African metallurgical practices flags the potential utility of these sources in Asia, Latin America and Europe. Aufbauend auf neueren methodischen Ansätzen der Raumsoziologie geht Benjamin Schenk der Neuordnung sozialer Räume im Zeitalter der Dampfmaschine nach. Damit leistet er einen wichtigen Beitrag zu aktuellen Debatten über die Geschichte räumlicher Ordnungen in Europa und die Spezifika von Russlands Aufbruch in die Moderne. Frithjof Benjamin Schenk ist Professor für Osteuropäische Geschichte an der Universität Basel. Nach dem Studium der Osteuropäischen Geschichte, Neueren und Neuesten Geschichte und Volkswirtschaftslehre in Marburg, Berlin (FU) und St. Petersburg arbeitete er als wissenschaftlicher Assistent und Dilthey-Fellow der Volkswagenstiftung an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. Zu seinen Forschungsschwerpunkten zählen die Geschichte von Erinnerung und Konzepten kollektiver Identität in Russland und Ostmitteleuropa, kognitive Karten (Mental Maps), Mobilitäts- und Raumgeschichte, vergleichende Imperiengeschichte, Autobiografik sowie die Geschichte politischer Gewalt.

    Abstract: This volume of essays examines the problem of mind, looking at how the problem has appeared to neuroscientists (in the widest sense) from classical antiquity through to contemporary times. Beginning with a look at ventricular neuropsychology in antiquity, this book goes on to look at Spinozan ideas on the links between mind and body, Thomas Willis and the foundation of Neurology, Hooke’s mechanical model of the mind and Joseph Priestley’s approach to the mind-body problem. The volume offers a chapter on the 19th century Ottoman perspective on western thinking.     Abstract: The history of artificial cold has been a rather intriguing interdisciplinary subject (physics, chemistry, technology, sociology, economics, anthropology, consumer studies) which despite some excellent monographs and research papers, has not been systematically exploited. It is a subject with all kinds of scientific, technological as well as cultural dimensions. For example, the common home refrigerator has brought about unimaginably deep changes to our everyday lives changing drastically eating habits and shopping mentalities. From the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 21st, issues related to the production and exploitation of artificial cold have never stopped to provide us with an incredibly interesting set of phenomena, novel theoretical explanations, amazing possibilities concerning technological applications and all encompassing cultural repercussions.     Abstract: The natural world is marked by an ever-increasing loss of varied habitats, a growing number of species extinctions, and a full range of new kinds of dilemmas posed by global warming. At the same time, humans are also working to actively shape this natural world through contemporary bioscience and biotechnology. In Cloning Wild Life, Carrie Friese posits that cloned endangered animals in zoos sit at the apex of these two trends, as humans seek a scientific solution to environmental crisis. Often fraught with controversy, cloning technologies, Friese argues, significantly affect our conceptualizations of and engagements with wildlife and nature.By studying animals at different locations, Friese explores the human practices surrounding the cloning of endangered animals. She visits zoos—the San Diego Zoological Park, the Audubon Center in New Orleans, and the Zoological Society of London—to see cloning and related practices in action, as well as attending academic and medical conferences and interviewing scientists, conservationists, and zookeepers involved in cloning. Ultimately, she concludes that the act of recalibrating nature through science is what most disturbs us about cloning animals in captivity, revealing that debates over cloning become, in the end, a site of political struggle between different human groups. Moreover, Friese explores the implications of the social role that animals at the zoo play in the first place—how they are viewed, consumed, and used by humans for our own needs. A unique study uniting sociology and the study of science and technology, Cloning Wild Life demonstrates just how much bioscience reproduces and changes our ideas about the meaning of life itself

Dies führte zu Unsicherheiten und im Kontext der Gentechnologie zu jahrzehntelangen Kontroversen über ihre Bewertung. In einer historischen Diskursanalyse erfasst Samia Salem die Auseinandersetzungen über die Rote und Grüne Gentechnologie in der BRD seit den 1960er Jahren in ihrer gesamten Breite. Die Betrachtung der augenscheinlich unüberschaubaren Diskussionen aus der Vogelperspektive ermöglicht die Identifizierung von Kontinuitäten und Diskontinuitäten sowie ihre Zusammenhänge mit anderen Technikdiskursen. Die Analysen konzentrieren sich auf die bedeutenden Akteursgruppen und ihre Rolle für die Diskussion, darunter Mediziner, Biowissenschaftler, Politiker, Interessenverbände, Kirchenvertreter und Theologen sowie Bauern und Landwirte. Begleitet wird die Diskursanalyse u. a. von Fragen nach der Beeinflussung durch die Reproduktionstechnologie oder Kernenergie.

    Abstract: Um das westliche Bündnis im Ost-West-Konflikt nach innen zu stabilisieren, setzten die USA auf auswärtige Kultur- und Informationspolitik. In der Bundesrepublik wandten sich etwa 20 Amerikahäuser und Deutsch-Amerikanische Institute an die westdeutsche Bevölkerung, um Sympathien für die Politik und die Werte der USA zu erzeugen. Sie waren jedoch nicht nur Mittler im amerikanischen Auftrag, sondern durch vielfältige Beziehungen fest in der westdeutschen Kulturlandschaft verankert. In der Öffentlichkeit standen sie als symbolische Orte für "Amerika" – im positiven wie im negativen Sinne. Reinhild Kreis analysiert die Strukturen, Zielvorgaben und das Instrumentarium der amerikanischen Kultur- und Informationspolitik in der Bundesrepublik, Themenkarrieren und -konjunkturen sowie die Amerikahäuser und DAI in ihren lokalen Beziehungsgefügen. An der Schnittstelle von USA und Bundesrepublik, Außen- und Kulturpolitik, Regierung und Öffentlichkeit zeigt die Untersuchung der Amerikahäuser und Deutsch-Amerikanischen Institute die Gestaltung, Dynamiken und Spannungen der transatlantischen Beziehungen seit den 1960er Jahren unterhalb der diplomatischen Ebene.

    Abstract: Nel giugno del 1783 i fratelli Montgolfier aprirono la via delle nuvole con un mezzo 'più leggero dell'aria', la mongolfiera, 120 anni dopo, altri due fratelli, Wilbur e Orville Wright, conquistarono la terza dimensione con un mezzo 'più pensate dell'aria', l'aeroplano. Due modi differenti per raggiungere quello che Wilbur definì 'il più grande desiderio dell'umanità': volare. In questa breve storia del volo, vengono raccontate le gesta di quanti con ardore e follia, criterio e scelleratezza hanno tentato la via dei cieli: sono quei temerari che per guadagnarsi il sogno hanno messo in conto ossa rotte e cadute rovinose. Di alcuni è rimasta la gloria e il ricordo scolpito nella storia, ad altri un nome perduto nelle cronache di un tempo che fu. E quando a inizio Novecento si diffondono i primi brevetti di pilota, l'era pionieristica del volo inizia a volgere al termine. Ma per quei temerari a bordo di macchine volanti questo significa solo compiere imprese sempre più ardite lungo la via delle nuvole.

    Abstract: While much has been written upon Social Darwinism, the historical impact of Darwinism upon theories of war and human aggression has been sadly neglected. This book is the first to study this discourse in depth. It challenges the received view that Darwinism generated essentially aggressive and warlike social values and pugnacious images of humankind.     Abstract: The HMMM2008 International Symposium on History of Machines and Mechanisms is the third event of a series started in 2000 as the main activity of the IFToMM Permanent commission for History of MMS, Mechanism and Machine Science. The aim of History of Machines and Mechanisms conferences is to establish an international forum for presenting and discussing historical developments in the field of Mechanism and Machine Science (MMS). The subject area covers all aspects of the development of HMM, such as machines, mechanisms, kinematics, design methods, etc., that are related to people, events, objects, indeed, anything that assisted in the development of the HMM, and is presented in the form of reasoning and arguments, demonstration and identification, and description and evaluation. The HMM2008 Proceedings contain 26 papers by authors from all over the world. The topics include historical development on mechanism and machine theory, historical figures and their works, history of mechanical engineering, ancient machines and mechanisms, reconstruction design of ancient devices, mechanism and machine design, and engineering education. This book is of interest to researchers, graduate students and engineers specializing or promoting the history of science and technology, in particular on mechanism and machine science. This book will provide the readers with extensive background information on the origin and the history of the invention of fundamental machines and mechanisms, and will undoubtedly provide further understanding and motivation for their own research and/or consultancy work.

    Abstract: Little is known of Soviet and Russian lunar exploration although, in fact, the Soviet Union/Russia: Sent the first spaceships past the moon, the first to hit the moon and the first to circle the moon Was first to soft land on and orbit the moon Was first to send a spaceship around the moon and recover it on Earth Came very close to sending a cosmonaut around the moon first Built and successfully tested, in Earth orbit, a lunar lander Pioneered sophisticated, precise high-speed reentries into the Earth's atmosphere Came close to perfecting a giant moon rocket, the N-1 Retrieved three sets of rock samples from the moon by automatic spacecraft Landed advanced roving laboratories that explored the moon for months on end, traveling 48km Designed long-term lunar bases. These were remarkable achievements requiring a considerable level of engineering sophistication and have a place in the contemporary story of astronautics. Recent landings on Mars use, essentially, the very techniques developed by Russia to land on and explore the moon in the 1960s and 1970s. As an acknowledged expert and author of several books on the Soviet and Russian space programme, Brian Harvey is ideally suited to cover not only the engineering and scientific side but also the human stories of the Soviet and Russian lunar programme. These include those of the cosmonaut squad that trained to land on the moon, but was stood down, and of the designers who tried to realise the dream of a Russian moon, from Tikhonravov to Mishin: a Soviet lunar programme was first proposed by designer Mikhail Tikhonravov in a children’s magazine in 1951 and he persuaded a sceptical Soviet leadership of the value of a moon programme. Following Sputnik, the first lunar flights quickly achieved the key goals of hitting, circling and photographing the moon in 1959. The Soviet Union achieved all the early ‘firsts’ in lunar exploration, such as soft landing and orbiting the moon, and Brian Harvey will recount the frantic efforts to rival America’s Apollo and the dramatic hours of 21st July 1969, when Russia tried to soft land Luna 15 in the Sea of Crises even as Armstrong and Aldrin explored the moon in the nearby Sea of Tranquility

    Abstract: Ironically, the loss of Challenger in January 1986 fired my interest in space exploration more than any other single event. I was nine years old. My parents were, at the time, midway through moving house and, luckily, the TV was one of the few domestic items still to be packed. I watched the entire horror unfold live on all of the network stations. Admittedly, my fascination with rockets and astronauts, stars and planets had begun several years earlier, but Challenger's destruction turned it from an occasional hobby to a fascination which has remained with me ever since. In September 1988, aged 11,1 came home from school to watch STS-26 return the Shuttle fleet to orbital operations. Five years later, I gave a speech on the STS-51L disaster to my teacher as part of my GCSE English assessment. Another decade passed and, now a teacher myself, I returned to my school one cold Monday morning to explain to my pupils what had happened to Challenger's sister ship, Columbia, a few days earlier. In some ways, the loss of Columbia affected me more deeply than Challenger

    Abstract: Philip Baker charts the history of manned space stations from the very beginning in a logical, chronological order. The Mir space station was one of the greatest human achievements in modern history, and a thorough telling of its story is essential to this book. During its life it grew and evolved into a truly international outpost, with visitors from all over the world taking advantage of the only permanent space station in orbit at that time. This book will be the only one of its kind to tell the whole story of the manned space stations from both nations, from the very beginning, to the current ISS story, and to the possibilities beyond. Each chapter of this book will contain interviews with many of the primary participants, including the astronauts, cosmonauts, designers, mission controllers, doctors and managers most directly involved in the flights.     Abstract: Die Entwicklung und Akzeptanz genetischer Konzepte der 1920er und 30er Jahre waren durch rassen- und geschlechterpolitische Prämissen bestimmt. Deutlich wird dies in der Gegenüberstellung der wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten von Fritz Lenz und Richard Goldschmidt, führender Genetiker am Kaiser-Wilhelm-Institut für Biologie und 1936 zur Emigration gezwungen. Der Rassenhygieniker Lenz vertrat das Ideal einer streng dichotomen Geschlechterordnung als Teil völkischer Überlegenheitsansprüche der Nordischen Rasse und der Forderung nach Rassenreinheit. Dagegen war die Vorstellung von einer Kontinuität zwischen zwei Geschlechtern Teil einer politischen Agenda, in der Rassenzugehörigkeit und -reinheit nicht als soziales Ordnungskriterium fungierten. Zu diesem politischen Konflikt gehörten zwei alternative genetische Konzepte. Die US-amerikanische Schule um Thomas Hunt Morgan lieferte Lenz ein Konzept eindeutiger Gene für eine biologisch begründete Rassen- und Geschlechterdifferenz. Goldschmidts Konzept tat dies nicht. Es war anhand der Vererbung und Ausbildung des Geschlechts mittels Kreuzung verschiedener geographischer Populationen von Insekten entwickelt. Diese „Rassenkreuzungen“ ergaben „intersexuelle“ Tiere mit uneindeutigem Geschlecht und dienten Lenz als Beweis, daß „Rassenmischung“ beim Menschen zu Degeneration führe, da sie die Geschlechterdifferenz verwische. Im Konflikt um die beiden Genkonzepte waren Rasse und Geschlecht keine analogen Kategorien zur Klassifikation von Menschen, sondern bedingten sich gegenseitig. Die Wahl des Genkonzepts war mit dem politischen Ziel verbunden: Rassen- und Geschlechterhierarchie oder liberale Koexistenz verschiedener Menschen ohne rassistische Trennungslinien.
