    Abstract: This book analyzes the reforms that led to a differentiated landscape of higher education systems after university practices and governance were considered poorly adapted to contemporary settings and to their new missions. This has led to a growing institutional differentiation in many higher education systems. This differentiation has certainly contributed to making the institutional landscape more diverse across and within higher education systems. This book covers this diversity. Each part corresponds to a different but complementary way of looking at reforms and highlights what can be learnt on specific cases by adopting a specific perspective. The first part analyzes the ongoing reforms and their evolution, identifies their internal contradictions, as well as the redefinitions and reorientations they experience, and reveals the ideas, representations, ideologies and theories on which they are built. The second part includes comparison between countries but also other comparative perspectives such as how one reform is developed in different regions of the same country, as well as how comparable reforms are declined to different sectors. The last part addresses the impact of the reforms. What is known about the effectiveness of such instruments on higher education systems?     Abstract: Incorporating both theoretical and practical perspectives, this volume of papers explores varied aspects of peer review of teaching in higher education.     Abstract: A revised survey of Rembrandt’s complete painted oeuvre. The question of which 17th-century paintings in Rembrandt’s style were actually painted by Rembrandt himself had already become an issue during his lifetime. It is an issue that is still hotly disputed among art historians today. The problem arose because Rembrandt had numerous pupils who learned the art of painting by imitating their master or by assisting him with his work as a portrait painter. He also left pieces unfinished, to be completed by others. The question is how to determine which works were from Rembrandt’s own hand. Can we, for example, define the criteria of quality that would allow us to distinguish the master’s work from that of his followers? Do we yet have methods of investigation that would deliver objective evidence of authenticity? To what extent do research techniques used in the physical sciences help? Or are we, after all, still dependent on the subjective, expert eye of the connoisseur? The book provides answers to these questions. Prof. Ernst van de Wetering, the author of our forthcoming book which deals with these questions, has been closely involved in all aspects of this research since 1968, the year the renowned Rembrandt Research Project (RRP) was founded. In particular, he played an important role in developing new criteria for authentication. Van de Wetering was also witness to the way the often overly zealous tendency to doubt the authenticity of Rembrandt’s paintings got out of hand. In this book he re-attributes to the master a substantial number of unjustly rejected Rembrandts. He also was closely involved in the (re)discovery of a considerable number of lost or completely unknown works by Rembrandt. The verdicts of earlier specialists - including the majority of members of the original RRP (up to 1989) - were based on connoisseurship: the self-confidence in one’s ability to recognise a specific artist’s style and ‘hand’. Over the years, Van de Wetering has carried out seminal research into 17th-century studio practice and ideas about art current in Rembrandt’s time. In this book he demonstrates the fallibility of traditional connoisseurship, especially in the case of Rembrandt, who was par excellence a searching artist.     Abstract: This book addresses some of the key questions that scientists have been asking themselves for centuries: what is knowledge? What is information? How do we know that we know something? How do we construct meaning from the perceptions of things? Although no consensus exists on a common definition of the concepts of information and communication, few can reject the hypothesis that information - whether perceived as « object » or as « process » - is a pre-condition for knowledge. Epistemology is the study of how we know things (anglophone meaning) or the study of how scientific knowledge is arrived at and validated (francophone conception). To adopt an epistemological stance is to commit oneself to render an account of what constitutes knowledge or in procedural terms, to render an account of when one can claim to know something. An epistemological theory imposes constraints on the interpretation of human cognitive interaction with the world. It goes without saying that different epistemological theories will have more or less restrictive criteria to distinguish what constitutes knowledge from what is not. If information is a pre-condition for knowledge acquisition, giving an account of how knowledge is acquired should impact our comprehension of information and communication as concepts. While a lot has been written on the definition of these concepts, less research has attempted to establish explicit links between differing theoretical conceptions of these concepts and the underlying epistemological stances. This is what this volume attempts to do.     Abstract: This volume provides a nuanced empirical assessment of the extent to which the academic profession is internationalized at the beginning of the 21st century.     Abstract: This book discusses how teaching and research have been weighted differently in academia in 18 countries and one region, Hong Kong SAR, based on an international comparative study entitled the Changing Academic Profession (CAP). It addresses these issues using empirical evidence, the CAP data. Specifically, the focus is on how teaching and research are defined in each higher education system, how teaching and research are preferred and conducted by academics, and how academics are rewarded by their institution. Since the establishment of Berlin University in 1810, there has been controversy on teaching and research as the primary functions of universities and academics. The controversy increased when Johns Hopkins University was established in 1876 with only graduate programs, and more recently with the release of the Carnegie Foundation report Scholarship Reconsidered by Ernest L. Boyer in 1990. Since the publication of Scholarship Reconsidered in 1990, higher education scholars and policymakers began to pay attention to the details of teaching and research activities, a kind of ‘black box’ because only individual academics know how they conduct teaching and research in their own contexts

    Abstract: This book proposes that the highest expression of ethics is an aesthetic. It suggests that the quintessential performance of any field of practice is an art that captures an ethic beyond any literal statement of values. This is toadvocate for a shift in emphasis,away from current juridical approaches to ethics (ethicalcodes or regulation), toward ethics as an aesthetic practice-away from ethics as a minimal requirement, toward ethics as an aspiration. The book explores the relationship between art and ethics: a subject that has fascinated philosophers from ancient Greece to the present. It explores this relationship in all the arts: literature, the visual arts, film, the performing arts, and music. It also examines current issues raised by ‘hybrid’ artists who are working at the ambiguous intersections between art, bioart and bioethics and challenging ethical limits in working with living materials. In considering these issues the book investigates the potential for art and ethics to be mutually challenged and changed in this meeting. The book is aimed at artists and students of the arts, who may be interested in approaching ethics and the arts in a new way. It is also aimed at students and teachers of ethics and philosophy, as well as those working in bioethics and the health professions. It will have appeal to the ‘general educated reader’ as being current, of considerable interest, and offering a perspective on ethics that goes beyond a professional context to include questions about how one approaches ethics in one’s own life and practices

    Abstract: Bis heute wird der Tod Karls VI. und der Regierungsantritt Maria Theresias 1740 als eine einschneidende Zäsur in der österreichischen Geschichte gesehen. Doch nun stellt sich vor dem Hintergrund eines weitergefassten Schnittstellenbegriffes (Reinhart Koselleck) die Frage, ob der zweifellos grundlegende Wandel zwischen 1720 und 1780 nicht differenzierter gesehen werden muss. Ausgehend vom Raum des Wiener Hofes, an dem der Herrscherwechsel in seinen Auswirkungen am ehesten dokumentiert werden kann, wird aus der Sicht sogenannten Hofkünste versucht, Kontinuitäten und Diskontinuitäten aufzuzeigen

    Abstract: This volume deals with the so-called new Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and their interrelationship with Muslims and the interpretation of Islam. This volume taps into what has been labelled Media Studies 2.0, which has been characterized by an intensified focus on everyday meanings and ‘lay’ users - in contrast to earlier emphases on experts or self-acclaimed experts. This lay adoption of ICT and the subsequent digital ‘literacy’ is not least noticeable among Muslim communities. According to some global estimates, one in ten internet users is a Muslim. This volume offers an ethnography of ICT in Muslim communities. The contributors to this volume also demonstrate a new kind of moderation with regard to more sweeping and avant-gardistic claims, which have characterized the study of ICT previously. This moderation has been combined with a keen attention to the empirical material but also deliberations on new quantitative and qualitative approaches to ICT, Muslims and Islam, for instance the digital challenges and changes wrought on the Qur’an, Islam’s sacred scripture. As such this volume will also be relevant for people interested in the study of ICT and the blooming field of digital humanities. Scholars of Islam and the Islamic world have always be engaged and entangled in their object of study. The developments within ICT have also affected how scholars take part in and influence public Islamic and academic discussions. This complicated issue provides basis for a number of meta-reflexive studies in this volume. It will be essential for students and scholars within Islamic studies but will also be of interest for anthropologists, sociologists and others with a humanistic interest in ICT, religion and Islam

    Abstract: During the last decades ranking has become one of the most controversial issues in higher education and research. It is widely recognized now that, although some of the current rankings can be severely criticized, they seem to be here to stay. In addition, rankings appear to have a great impact on decision-makers at all levels of higher education and research systems worldwide, including in universities. Rankings reflect a growing international competition among universities for talent and resources; at the same time they reinforce competition by their very results. Yet major concerns remain as to the rankings' methodological underpinnings and to their various impacts. This book presents a comprehensive overview of the current 'state of the art' of ranking in higher education and research, and introduces a completely new approach called 'multidimensional ranking'. In part 1 rankings are discussed in the broader context of quality assurance and transparency in higher education and research. In addition the many current ranking methodologies are analyzed and criticized, and their impacts are explored. In part 2 a new approach to ranking is introduced, based on the basic idea that higher education and research institutions have different profiles and missions and that the performances of these institutions should reflect these differences. This multidimensional approach is operationalized in a new multidimensional and user-driven ranking tool, called U-Multirank. U-Multirank is the outcome of a pilot project, sponsored by the European Commission, in which the new ranking instrument was designed and tested at a global scale. Contents: 1.     Abstract: This is the fifth volume of A CORPUS OF REMBRANDT PAINTINGS, which will consist of six volumes in total. The CORPUS is dedicated to the painted works of Rembrandt. It aims to isolate Rembrandts own works from the great volume of Rembrandt-like paintings, produced by his many pupils and followers, sometimes with the involvement of the master himself. The fourth volume (Springer 2005) was dedicated to Rembrandts self-portraits. This fifth volume is about the small-scale history and genre paintings. The so-called histories (paintings, etchings and drawings with biblical or mythological scenes) were considered to be the most challenging assignments for an artist. All kinds of artistic insights and skills known in Rembrandts time as the basic aspects of the art of painting - played a role in the creation of this kind of work, especially in the history paintings. Systematic research into this hitherto little known area has revealed a rich, and often fresh understanding of Rembrandts own way of thinking about these basic aspects, which makes the present volume a unique and innovative contribution to the history of art.     Abstract: From 1890 until 1938 in Vienna, Jewish theatre was a lively and fascinating part of the theatrical scene. Yiddish operettas and melodramas, serious plays and so-called Jargonschwänke were staged. The widespread texts of these Jewish theatre-evenings, in Yiddish and German, are discussed and analysed in this work.After an introduction, the aesthetical and dramaturgical basics of Jewish drama are presented. As the study shows, Jewish drama has got a very strong connection to non-Jewish theatre. Especially the dramaturgic forms can be found in non-Jewish drama before it emerges in Jewish texts, like the so-called lebnsbild. In the 19th century, it was popular on the Viennese stages, around 1900 it was a main genre of New York City's Yiddish theatres. Jargon and shund are terms often used to describe Yiddish plays and theatre - these terms are discussed in the present work as well as the cliché of Jewish self-mockery and self-hatred.The most prominent themes Jewish plays are dealing with are: love, marriage and family; anti-Semitism; stories and heroes from ancient Jewish history; myths and legends. The broad spectrum of plays about family and social life shows its importance in Jewish history and presence. The different political and historical situations of Jews in Western and Eastern Europe become evident in text concerning anti-Semitism. In Yiddish operettas and melodramas heroes from ancient Jewish history and the bible are shown, and in the 1920s plays about Dibbuks and Golems were most popular.A bibliography of Jewish dramas, complete with existing translations, builds the last part of this work
    Abstract: Jüdische Theatertexte, wie sie von 1890 bis 1938 in Wien aufgeführt und / oder geschrieben wurden, stehen im Zentrum dieser Arbeit. Dazu zählen jiddische Singspiele, Melodramen und ernsthafte Dramen ebenso wie Texte berühmter deutschjüdischer Autoren der Wiener Moderne und die sogenannten Jargonschwänke, die äußerst populär waren.Nach einer Einführung in die Thematik werden die ästhetischen und dramaturgischen Grundlagen der jüdischen Dramatik vorgestellt. Dabei wird klar, dass diese aus der nichtjüdischen Theaterwelt stammen, wie etwa das im jiddischen Theater wichtige Genre des Lebensbildes, das auf Wiener Bühnen des 19. Jahrhunderts zu finden war. Die in der zeitgenössischen Kritik und in der Theatergeschichtsschreibung oft negativ verwendeten Begriffe Schund und Jargon für das Jiddische und dessen Theatertexte werden im weiteren diskutiert. Außerdem wird auf das Klischee von der angeblich so starken Neigung von Juden zu Selbstpersiflage und Selbstverhöhnung eingegangen.Im zentralen Teil werden die jüdischen Dramen, nach Themen geordnet, vorgestellt und analysiert. Wesentliche Themenbereiche sind: Liebe und Partnerwahl, Ehe und Familie; Antisemitismus; Geschichten und Legenden aus der Zeit vor der Diaspora sowie Mythen und Legenden.Die Breite und Vielfalt der Familiendramen verweist auf die zentrale Bedeutung der Familie innerhalb der jüdischen Geschichte und Kultur. In den Dramen, der Hauptthema Antisemitismus ist, werden die unterschiedlichen Lebensbedingungen sowie die sozialen und politischen Grundlagen der Juden in West- und Osteuropa evident. Geschichten und Legenden aus der Zeit vor der Diaspora, vor allem aus der Bibel, bilden die Stoffen jiddischer Singspiele und Operetten, die ebenso vorgestellt werden wie die dramatischen Bearbeitungen der Golem- und Dibbuk-Sagen.Die Arbeit schließt mit einer umfassenden Dramenbibliographie, die nicht nur die verwendeten Texte umfasst, sondern auch die jeweiligen Übersetzungen, um Zugänge zu diesen Texten und eine weitere Auseinandersetzung damit zu ermöglichen

    Abstract: Diese Arbeit ist der Versuch, durch die Verbindung von kunsthistorischen und politikgeschichtlichen Erkenntnissen ein genaueres korrekteres Bild der behandelten Epochen zu erhalten. Die Allegorie der Austria ist dabei das Instrument zur genauen Evaluierung der jeweiligen nationalen und staatspolitischen Vorstellungen. Die Allegorie der Austria verkörpert dabei sehr genau die jeweiligen politischen Konstellationen. Die dynamische Austria mit der rudolphinischen Hauskrone bedeutet die Prädominanz des Herrscherhauses, die bürgerliche Austria mit der Mauerkrone die Vorstellungen dieser Bevölkerungsschicht, vor allem im deutschsprachigen Teil von Österreich, die Stellung des Staates über dem Herrscher der Sinne Hegels, sowie auch die siegreiche Austria mit dem Lorbeerkranz als Zeichen der Überwindung der Revolution von 1848. Gerade im Vielvölkerstaat der Habsburger, wo die divergierenden gesamtstaatlichen und nationalen Sichtweisen zu Konflikten führen mußten, ist so die Allegorie der Austria ein wichtiger Hinweis auf die jeweilige Stellung der Öffentlichkeit zu der angedeuteten Problematik. Der in der Arbeit vorgegebene Zeitraum umfaßt die Periode vom Beginn des Aufstiegs Österreichs zur Großmacht bis zum Ende der Monarchie nach dem ersten Weltkrieg. Dabei werden verschiedene künstlerische Aspekte in einer neueren und genaueren Betrachtungsweise angesprochen, wie zum Beispiel der Zyklus von 13 Porträts aus dem Umfeld von Rudolph II. im Linzer Museum Nordico, die in der großen Ausstellung über diesen Herrscher "Prag um 1600" nicht repräsentiert waren und die am Beginn der Austria-Allegorie in der bildenden Kunst stehen, oder die Denkmalsentwürfe Otto Wagners, die im Großteil der Literatur über diesen Architekten nur als Gelegenheitsentwürfe bezeichnet werden, aber in Wahrheit ernstzunehmende Auseinandersetzungen Wagners mit der nationalen Kunst sind. Ein weiterer gedanklicher Ansatzpunkt ist der Vergleich des Ringens um einen modernen Gesamtstaat vor allem seit dem Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts im Verhältnis zum heutigen Europa mit seinen überstaatlichen Strukturen. Dazu gehört die im Weltkrieg aufgekommene Idee von Mitteleuropa unter Einschluß der Türkei und der Wiedererrichtung des Königreiches Polen als Pufferstaat gegenüber dem revolutionären Russland.     Abstract: The intention of this paper is to give a correct inside in the review of the discussed periods. It tries to achieve this by using the means of Art History and Political History to get an exact inside. The allegorical representation of the Austria in this case is the means to get it. It stands for the specific aspects of the time, so for instance the dynastic Austria with the crown of Emperor Rudolph II. meaning the predominance of the ruling Habsburgs, the civic Austria with the mural crown showing the ideas of the middle class, especially in the German speaking parts of the country, with the acceptance of the predominance of the state over the ruler, according to Hegel, or also the victorious Austria with the laurel wreath as a symbol of the conquest of the revolution of 1848. The Habsburg monarchy including many different nations was the proper breeding ground of dissatisfaction and diversified nationalistic ideas. So the representation of the Austria is an important means of showing these ideas. The periods the paper is working on are roughly speaking starting with the time of the beginning of the position of the monarchy as one of the ruling powers of Europe until her dissolution and the end of World War I. Different aspects of art history are also dealt with. So for example the 13 portraits of Habsburg rulers in the Museum Nordico at Linz, which are positioned in the time of Rudolph II. and mark the beginning of the representation of the allegory of the Austria, or the designs for monuments by Otto Wagner which are dealt with in the many books on this architect only as a side issue, whereas they are a very important part of wagners work and show his national feelings, towards his fatherland. It is furthermore interesting to look at the nationalistic problems shown in this paper and compare them with contemporary Europe and the overcoming of them. These ideas are not new, the date back to the 19th and especially the beginning of the 20th century when the Monarchy tried to overcome the problems with the slogan of Großösterreich (Greater Austria). During World War one followed the idea of Mitteleuropa (Central Europe) including Turkey and the institution of a Polish State to hold off revolutionary Russia

    Abstract: Das vorgelegte Werk ist als 1. Band einer zweiteilig geplanten Publikation verfasst worden, die sich mit den kulturhistorischen und architekturgeschichtlichen Aspekten der Hotel- und Villenbauten am Semmering im südlichen Niederösterreich beschäftigt. Die Arbeit ist eine Fortsetzung eines vom FWF geförderten Forschungsprojekts (Nr. P 13959 ) unter der wissenschaftlichen Leitung und Begutachtung des Antragstellers (Univ.-Prof.Dr. Mario Schwarz). Gegenstand der Untersuchungen und Ausführungen dieses Bandes ist die kulturgeschichtliche Stellung und Bedeutung der Südbahngesellschaft bei der Erschließung der Semmering-Region als erstrangig bedeutendes Naherholungsgebiet des Wiener Bürgertums im späten 19. Jahrhundertwende bis zum Ersten Weltkrieg. Die Untersuchung zeigt, dass die Aufschließung dieses Gebiets hauptsächlich auf die Initiative des Direktors der Südbahngesellschaft Friedrich Schüler sowie auf den Hofbildhauer Franz Schönthaler zurückgeht. Die Umsetzung der Planungen im Bereich der Hotelarchitektur ist in der ersten Phase auf Architekt Franz Wilhelm, den Mitarbeiter des Erbauers des Wiener Südbahnhofes Wilhelm Flattich zurückzuführen, in einer zweiten Phase auf die Architekten Alfred Wildhack und Robert v. Morpurgo. Die Forschungen der Verfasserin erschließen sowohl zu den bisher gänzlich unbearbeiteten Werken dieser Architekten, als auch zu ihren Biographien wichtige Erkenntnisse. Völlig neue, wichtige Ergebnisse brachte die Untersuchung hinsichtlich der Zusammenhänge der Hotelbauten am Semmering mit den großen Hotelanlagen der Südbahngesellschaft in Toblach (Dobiacco; von Wilhelm Flattich) und Abbazia (Opatija; von Alfred Wildhack u.a.) als Aktivitäten einer corporate identity der Bahngesellschaft. Diese Ergebnisse stellen die Südbahngesellschaft mit an die Weltspitze der berühmten Hotelaanlagen von Eisenbahngesellschaften, für die die Autorin zahlreiche Vergleichsbeispiele von Großbritannien bis in die USA anführt. Die Verfasserin erschließt damit den Bereich eines bisher erst in wenigen Ansätzen erforschten Gebiets der Architekturgeschichte. Sowohl vom Ambiente als auch von den gewählten Stileigenschaften der Bauten bestehen jedoch auch wichtige Bezüge der Hotelarchitektur des Semmering zu den Hotelbauten in der Schweiz.     Abstract: The present manuscript is intended to be part I of a publication in two volumes, which deals with the historic architecture in the region of "Semmering" in southern Lower Austria from the point of view of art history, cultural history and history of architecture. The study was attempted in continuation of the FWF-project P 13959 under scientifical direction and supervision of the applicant (Prof.Dr. Mario Schwarz). Main topic of this study is the role and importance of the "Suedbahngesellschaft" (Southern Railway Company) in the process of the formation of the Semmering-region as a first-rate holiday resort of the Viennese society during the late 19th century up to the beginning of World War I. The study shows that the forming of this region mainly depended on the initiative of Friedrich Schueler, the Southern Railways Company's director, and Franz Schoenthaler, sculptor in duty of the Imperial Court. The materialization of the planning in the field of hotel-architecture in the first phase was due to architect Franz Wilhelm - collaborator of Wilhelm Flattich, who designed the railway-station of the Southern Railway Company at Vienna, in the second phase due to the architects Alfred Wildhack and Robert v. Morpurgo. The author's research brought a lot of new insight in work and biographies of these architects, who have been neglected so far by the art history. New, important results were achieved by this study concerning the links between the Semmering hotel-architecture and the grand hotel-resorts at Dobiacco (Toblach; architect: Wilhelm Flattich) and Opatija (Abbazia; architect: Alfred Wildhack e.a.), built by the Southern Railway Company as well, which have to be seen as activities in sense of the company's "corporate identity". Thus the company appears among the leading entrepreneurs in the world as founder of railway-hotels. The author presents several famous examples of this kind of hotels from Great Britain to the USA. Here the study is entering a field of architectural research, which still stands at the beginning. There are also important relations between the Semmering hotel-architecture and the historical hotels of Switzerland. In a large panorama the author includes the Semmering hotels in the general regional development of the "Wiener Hausberge" (hills and mountains near Vienna) during the second half of 19th century, especially in the time after the construction of the Semmering railway.     Abstract: The history is intended as the first comprehensive examination of the role of Austrian history in the visual arts of the Habsburg monarchy between 1804 and 1918. At its centre are the following three key questions: What status did the general preoccupation with history acquire? What where the favorite historical subjects for artistic representation? What significance did the Habsburgs´own history (almost endlessly "extendible" all the way back to its fictitious mythical beginnings) hold for the issues of the day? Works of art contribute to the creation of traditions in a double sense: a given work simultaneously contains and creates history. A work of art is also a medium for social identification, facilitating communication between the monarch and the people. Investigating the characteristics of the different "reflections on history" in the visual arts in Austria in the 19th century led to the practical necessity of significantly widening the known material basis. It became apparent that previous research was based on a relatively limited range of works (primarily "high art") and failed to relate these works to literary documents from the fiields of historiography or belles-lettres. I believe it is only by expanding the basis in terms of both word and picture documentation that a reliable overview of the different strategies pursued by Habsburg iconography can be gained. Not only did my chosen methodology seem expedient, and indeed almost indispensable for an examination of concrete historical cases, it also reveals that this interlocking approach (furthermore justified by the nature of the material) based on interrelating picture and text media contains the very key to a proper investigation of the historical art of the 19th century. In approaching the central questions, this study begins with an introduction that looks at concepts and methodology and charts the difficult formation of the "Austrian nation" from "Casa d´Austria" to the Habsburg "nation state". The second chapter examines the relevance of the Austrian 18th century in the consciousness of the following century based on the examples of rulers Maria Theresia and Joseph II.     Abstract: Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist es, die Bedeutung der österreichischen Geschichte in der bildenden Kunst der Habsburgermonarchie von 1804 bis 1918 erstmals umfassend deutlich zu machen. Im Zentrum stehen vor allem folgende drei Fragen: Welchen Stellenwert gewann die Beschäftigung mit Geschichte ganz allgemein? Auf welche historischen Ereignisse bezog man sich vorzugsweise in den Darstellungen der Kunst? In welcher Hinsicht besaß die eigene - bis zu fiktiven mythischen Anfängen gleichsam beliebig "verlängerbare" - Geschichte für gegenwärtige Fragestellungen Bedeutung? Kunstwerke tragen zur Konstruktion von Traditionen bei - und dies in höchst doppelsinniger Weise: das jeweilige Werk enthält und erzeugt zugleich Geschichte. Es ist darüber hinaus ein soziales "Identifikationsmedium" und vermittelt zwischen dem Regenten und den Bürgern. Die Charakteristika der unterschiedlichen "Geschichtsreflexionen" in Österreich im 19. Jahrhundert in den Medien der bildenden Kunst zu untersuchen brachte die praktische Notwendigkeit mit sich, die bekannte Materialbasis beträchtlich zu erweitern. Es zeigte sich, daß die Forschung bisher zumeist von einem eher begrenzten Werkbestand (vor allem der "Hochkunst") ausging und diesen nicht mit literarischen Dokumenten aus Historiographie und Belletristik in Beziehung setzte. Erst auf dieser entsprechend erweiterten Basis von Dokumenten in Wort und Bild läßt sich meines Erachtens ein verläßliches Gesamtbild für die unterschiedlichen Strategien habsburgischer Ikonographie gewinnen. Die gewählte Methodik erschien nicht nur zweckmäßig und darüber hinaus für den konkreten historischen Fall geradezu unerläßlich, sondern sie zeigt auch, daß gerade in dieser verschränkten (und in der Ausrichtung des Materials begründeten) Betrachtungsweise aufeinander bezogener Bild- und Textmedien der Schlüssel für die Erforschung der österreichischen Historienkunst des 19. Jahrhunderts liegt. Die vorliegende Arbeit nähert sich den zentralen Fragestellungen über eine Einführung zu Begrifflichkeit und Methodik und verfolgt die schwierige Formierung der "Nation Österreich" von der "Casa d´Austria" bis zum habsburgischen "Gesamtstaat".     Abstract: Since 1999 European higher education has been engaged in the most radical reform seen during its 900 years of history. Out of the widely diverse national higher education systems and sub-systems a common European Higher Education Area is being created. This process, driven by the great ideas of establishing federal Europe, is full of tensions and conflicts often ignored in the official discourse. Expanding the project well beyond the borders of the European Union created the difficulty that relatively prosperous and high quality universities in the Western part find themselves side-by-side with much poorer universities of sometimes questionable quality in other parts of the continent. This has led to the rise of many controversial issues, as some of the sponsors of the Process, particularly the European Commission, see international competitiveness of European universities as its most significant goal. The Process is being perceived as following the logic of re-design of European knowledge products for the purposes of the world markets and certain elements of the production process. University communities - academic staff and students - however, sometimes feel that such an approach may not only carry the threat of compromising their vital interests but also call for the revision of the principles of academic autonomy as understood in Europe since the early 19th century. This volume brings together a group of higher education researchers across Europe and looks into the implementation of the Bologna Process in the countries often attributed a peripheral status. Although it is also obvious that if the Process has a center, it stands external to higher education systems and universities it concerns. One can possibly find it either in Brussels or across the Atlantic in the United States, internationally perceived as the main competitor to European higher education. In addition to cultural and political issues the European higher education project faces in various countries, the volume pays particular attention to the role of students as well as the changing position of the intellectuals under its impact. 'This is an important book on a central topic at an important time. It is learned in the best sense, eminently readable and that across many different levels.     Abstract: This handbook offers a state-of-the-art survey of quantitative science and technology research. It focuses on the development and application of indicators derived from data on scientific publications and patents. Many contributions introduce new challenging approaches in the use of these indicators.     Abstract: Environmental change in general, and climatic change in particular, are likely to impact significantly upon resources such as water and soils, transforming present day landscapes and their ecological characteristics. As a consequence, disruptions of socio-economic activities in sensitive regions of the globe can be expected in coming decades. Agriculture is at particular risk, especially in areas where prolonged droughts, sea level rise, enhanced natural hazards, or extreme meteorological events such as floods or mudslides threaten marginal existence. Disruptions and risks may have large effects on population migration. Conversely, large-scale movements of people, goods or capital may also disrupt local environments and further contribute to social problems.
