    Abstract: Screen time, defined as estimates of child time spent with digital media, is considered harmful to very young children. At the same time, the use of digital media by children under five years of age has increased dramatically, and with the advent of mobile and streaming media can occur anywhere and at any time. Digital media has become an integral part of family life. Imprecise global screen time estimates do not capture multiple factors that shape family media ecology. In this Element, the authors discuss the need to shift the lens from screen time measures to measures of family media ecology, describe the new Dynamic, Relational, Ecological Approach to Media Effects Research (DREAMER) framework, and more comprehensive digital media assessments. The authors conclude this Element with a roadmap for future research using the DREAMER framework to better understand how digital media use is associated with child outcomes

    Abstract: The human species is very young, but in a short time it has acquired some striking, if biologically superficial, variations across the planet. As this book shows, however, none of those biological variations can be understood in terms of discrete races, which do not actually exist as definable entities. Starting with a consideration of evolution and the mechanisms of diversification in nature, this book moves to an examination of attitudes to human variation throughout history, showing that it was only with the advent of slavery that considerations of human variation became politicized. It then embarks on a consideration of how racial classifications have been applied to genomic studies, demonstrating how individualized genomics is a much more effective approach to clinical treatments. It also shows how racial stratification does nothing to help us understand the phenomenon of human variation, at either the genomic or physical levels.

    Abstract: Humans may live in the Anthropocene, but this does not affect all in the same way. How would the Anthropocene look if, instead of searching its traces in the geosphere, researchers would look for them in the organosphere, in the ecologies of humans in their entanglements with the environment? Looking at this embodied stratigraphy of power and toxicity, more than the Anthropocene, we will discover the Wasteocene. The imposition of wasting relationships on subaltern human and more-than-human communities implies the construction of toxic ecologies made of contaminating substances and narratives. While official accounts have systematically erased any trace of those wasting relationships, another kind of narrative has been written in flesh, blood, and cells. We assume social media is only a tool for our modern day communications and interactions, but is it quietly changing our identities and how we see the world and one another? Our current debate about the human behaviors behind social media misses the important effects these social networking technologies are having on our sense of shared morality and rationality. There has been much concern about the loss of privacy and anonymity in the Information Age, but little attention has been paid to the consequences and effects of social media and the behavior they engender on the Internet. In order to understand how social media influences our morality, Lisa S. Nelson suggests a new methodological approach to social media and its effect on society. Instead of beginning with the assumption that we control our use of social media, this book considers how the phenomenological effects of social media influences our actions, decisions, and, ultimately, who we are and who we become. This important study will inform a new direction in policy and legal regulation for these increasingly important technologies

Settle argues that in the context of increasing partisan polarization among American political elites, the way we communicate on Facebook uniquely facilitates psychological polarization among the American public. Frenemies introduces the END Framework of social media interaction. END refers to a subset of content that circulates in a social media ecosystem: a personalized, quantified blend of politically informative 'expression', 'news', and 'discussion' seamlessly interwoven into a wider variety of socially informative content. Scrolling through the News Feed triggers a cascade of processes that result in negative attitudes about those who disagree with us politically. The inherent features of Facebook, paired with the norms of how people use the site, heighten awareness of political identity, bias the inferences people make about others' political views, and foster stereotyped evaluations of the political out-group

    Abstract: People of European descent form the bulk of the population in most of the temperate zones of the world - North America, Australia and New Zealand. The military successes of European imperialism are easy to explain; in many cases they were a matter of firearms against spears. But as Alfred W. Crosby maintains in this highly original and fascinating book, the Europeans' displacement and replacement of the native peoples in the temperate zones was more a matter of biology than of military conquest. European organisms had certain decisive advantages over their New World and Australian counterparts. The spread of European disease, flora and fauna went hand in hand with the growth of populations. These statistically quite rare outbursts of violence thus gain an enormous visibility, shaping their collective image. At the same time, psychological perspectives deal with the cause and prevention of this specific form of violence.     Abstract: Music, Sound and Space is the first collection to integrate research from musicology and sound studies on music and sound as they mediate everyday life. Music and sound exert an inescapable influence on the contemporary world, from the ubiquity of MP3 players to the controversial use of sound as an instrument of torture.     Abstract: Mit der Figur des »Mediums« wird in der Regel eine Vermittlungsfunktion angenommen und ein mittelbares Weltverhältnis unterstellt. Dem hält Jan-H. Möller entgegen, dass sich erst mittels reflexiver medialer Strukturen ein differentes oder abständiges Seinsverhältnis herausbildet. Neben Kittler widmet sich seine Untersuchung dabei in erster Linie Adorno, Derrida, Heidegger und Luhmann. Sie zeigt: Die Frage ist nicht, wie das Subjekt zum Objekt kommt, sondern wie es aus einer Indifferenz mit ihm zu sich gelangt.Entsprechend lässt sich Mittelbarkeit als medialer Effekt rekonstruieren: Erst anhand von Strukturen medialer Reflexivität wird das Dasein aus seiner wahrnehmungsmäßigen Welteinbettung abgeschieden

    Abstract: New media laws and technologies are currently changing radio in West Africa. Tilo Grätz analyzes this change using the example of the appropriation of radio technologies in Benin. He shows that the processes take place in the interplay of producers, listeners, and technical capabilities under the influence of institutions of media politics. Local radio cultures develop which manifest themselves in typical subjects, program formats, and everyday radio use practices. The most successful programs are interactive and facilitate discussion on social and political as well as personal problems. Technological dramas (Pfaffenberger) accompany the varied development of Beninese radio cultures

    Abstract: »The more things change, the more they stay the same.«Dieses Buch widmet sich dem Verhältnis von Innovation und Konvention und zeigt: Ein dichotomisches und positivistisches Verständnis der auch im gegenwärtigen hegemonialen Diskurs zentralen Begriffe greift notwendigerweise zu kurz. Es gilt hingegen, das Verhältnis von Innovation und Konvention als wechselseitig vermittelt zu begreifen. Die literatur-, kultur- und medienwissenschaftlichen Beiträge setzen sich kritisch-theoretisch mit diesem Verhältnis auseinander, indem sie es jeweils unterschiedlich als historisch kontingente und medial disponierte Differenzierung, Dialektik oder Hybridität denken und an (kulturellen) Texten, Medien und Praxen von der Romantik bis in die Gegenwart explizieren
