    Abstract: This 2007 book is an introductory history of racial slavery in the Americas. Brazil and Cuba were among the first colonial societies to establish slavery in the early sixteenth century. Approximately a century later British colonial Virginia was founded, and slavery became an integral part of local culture and society. In all three nations, slavery spread to nearly every region, and in many areas it was the principal labor system utilized by rural and urban elites. Yet long after it had been abolished elsewhere in the Americas, slavery stubbornly persisted in the three nations. It took a destructive Civil War in the United States to bring an end to racial slavery in the southern states in 1865. In 1866 slavery was officially ended in Cuba, and in 1888 Brazil finally abolished this dreadful institution, and legalized slavery in the Americas came to an end

    Abstract: First published in London in 1816, The Narrative of Robert Adams is an account of the adventures of Robert Adams, an African American seaman who survives shipwreck, slavery, and brutal efforts to convert him to Islam, before being ransomed to the British consul. In London, Adams is discovered by the Company of Merchants Trading which publishes his story, into which Adams inserts a fantastical account of a trip to Timbuctoo. Adams's story is accompanied by contemporary essays and notes that place his experience in the context of European exploration of Africa at the time, and weigh his credibility against other contemporary accounts. Professor Adams's introduction examines Adams's credibility in light of modern knowledge of Africa and discusses the significance of his story in relation to the early nineteenth century interest in Timbuctoo, and to the literary genres of the slave narrative and the Barbary Captivity narrative

Muslim revolts in Brazil are also discussed, especially in 1835, by way of a nuanced analysis. The second part of the book looks at the emergence of Islam among the African-descended in the United States in the twentieth century, with successive chapters on Noble Drew Ali, Elijah Muhammad, and Malcolm X, with a view to explaining how orthodoxy arose from varied unorthodox roots

    Abstract: Abstract: Der Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit dem Armutsrisiko von Frauen in der Schweiz im Kontext ihrer (un-)entgeltlichen Arbeitstätigkeiten. Dabei orientieren sich die Ausführungen an der These, wonach nicht die Arbeit, sondern die Arbeitsteilung das Armutsrisiko von Frauen erhöht. Diese Entwicklung wird anhand von fünf Faktoren und entsprechendem empirischen Datenmaterial für den Zeitraum von 1991 bis 2002 aufgezeigt: (1) die traditionelle Rollenverteilung in ihrer ganzen Breite, (2) die damit verbundene Erwerbsreduktion von Müttern, (3) Lohnungleichheit, (4) erhöhte Erwerbslosigkeit und Unterbeschäftigung unter Frauen sowie (5) das System sozialer Sicherung, das auf die Lohnhöhe ausgerichtet ist.     Abstract: Abstract: Im Rahmen von kritischen Anmerkungen zu einem Beitrag von U. L. Fischer, C. Großer und S. Liebermann über den Einfluss der deutschen Wiedervereinigung auf die subjektiven erwerbsbezogenen Deutungsmuster Ostdeutscher (im gleichen Heft) wird eine Reihe von Einwänden gegen implizite Unterstellungen und zentrale Argumentationen vorgebracht. Fischer und Mitarbeiter können belegen, dass sich entgegen der modernisierungstheoretisch zu erwartenden Flexibilisierung der Subjekte empirisch die subkjektiven Deutungsmuster und Handlungsroutinen nicht verändert haben. Dass dies für erstaunlich gehalten wird, wird allerdings auf eine Reihe theoretischer Missverständnisse der Moderne und der Sozialisation sowie auf die Verkennung konstanter und weniger flexibilitätsfördernder Anforderungen im System von Erwerbsarbeit zurückgeführt. Die unterstellte Beharrlichkeit der Deutungsmuster eines exemplarischen Falls wird zudem in generalisierender Weise den zum Teil einseitig interpretierten realsozialist

    Abstract: Abstract: Die Autorin plädiert für einen biographischen Forschungsansatz, um den Einfluß der verschiedenen "Modernisierungsschübe" auf die individuelle Lebensgeschichte von Frauen zu eruieren. Aus einer historisch-vergleichenden Perspektive wird dabei kollektiven Lernprozessen von Frauen nachgegangen, die als Teil sozialen und kulturellen Wandels erforscht werden. Mit dem Konzept "Bildungsbiographien von Frauen" sind einige Implikationen verbunden. Das Konzept der Biographie meint mehr als die Abfolge von institutionalisierten und zertifizierten Bildungsprozessen bzw. -daten in der zeitlichen Ordnung des Lebenslaufs. Von diesen eher "curricularen Strukturen" muss die "Lebensgeschichte" unterschieden werden, zu der die übergreifenden biographischen Formationsprozesse von Sinn und Erfahrung gehören. Aus einer geschlechtertheoretischen Perspektive müssen solche Lernprozesse im Spannungsfeld von Tradierung und Transformation der kulturellen Geschlechterordnung verordnet werden. (ICA)

    Abstract: Proposing a new kind of feminism that is genuinely international, Martha Nussbaum argues for an ethical underpinning to all thought about development planning and public policy, and dramatically moves beyond the abstractions of economists and philosophers to embed thought about justice in the concrete reality of the struggles of poor women. In this book, Nussbaum argues that international political and economic thought must be sensitive to gender difference as a problem of justice, and that feminist thought must begin to focus on the problems of women in the third world. Taking as her point of departure the predicament of poor women in India, she shows how philosophy should undergird basic constitutional principles that should be respected and implemented by all governments, and used as a comparative measure of quality of life across nations. Nussbaum concludes by calling for a new international focus to feminism, and shows through concrete detail how philosophical arguments about justice really do connect with the practical concerns of public policy

    Abstract: In this major book Martha Nussbaum, one of the most innovative and influential philosophical voices of our time, proposes a kind of feminism that is genuinely international, argues for an ethical underpinning to all thought about development planning and public policy, and dramatically moves beyond the abstractions of economists and philosophers to embed thought about justice in the concrete reality of the struggles of poor women. Nussbaum argues that international political and economic thought must be sensitive to gender difference as a problem of justice, and that feminist thought must begin to focus on the problems of women in the third world. Taking as her point of departure the predicament of poor women in India, she shows how philosophy should undergird basic constitutional principles that should be respected and implemented by all governments, and used as a comparative measure of quality of life across nations

    Abstract: Feminist analysis shows that the prevailing concepts of citizenship often assume a male citizen. How, then, does this affect the agency and participation of women in modern democracies? This insightful book, first published in 2000, presents a systematic comparison of the links between women's social rights and democratic citizenship in three different citizenship models: republican citizenship in France, liberal citizenship in Britain, and social citizenship in Denmark. Birte Siim argues that France still suffers from the contradictions of pro-natalist policy, and that Britain is only just starting to re-conceptualise the male-breadwinner model that is still a dominant feature. In her examination of the dual-breadwinner model in Denmark, Siim presents research about Scandinavian social policy and makes an important and timely contribution to debates in political sociology, social policy and gender studies

    Abstract: This 2000 book examines the demographic and economic history of slavery in Minas Gerais, the single largest slave-holding region in Brazil, from its settlement in the early eighteenth century until the abolition of Brazilian slavery in 1888. It utilizes the largest database ever assembled on a slave population in the Americas to reconstruct and analyse the unique history of slave labour in Minas Gerais. This slave population was remarkable in its ability to diversify economically as well as in increasing through natural reproduction, rather than through importation via the trans-atlantic slave trade. Minas Gerais therefore invites comparison with the patterns of slave reproduction found in the United States' South, heretofore considered unique. Extensively researched and finely documented, this book places the history of a unique Brazilian slave community into comparative perspective

    Abstract: This 1998 book explores Africa's involvement in the Atlantic world from the fifteenth century to the eighteenth century. It focuses especially on the causes and consequences of the slave trade, in Africa, in Europe, and in the New World. African institutions, political events, and economic structures shaped Africa's voluntary involvement in the Atlantic arena before 1680. Africa's economic and military strength gave African elites the capacity to determine how trade with Europe developed. Thornton examines the dynamics of colonization which made slaves so necessary to European colonizers, and he explains why African slaves were placed in roles of central significance. Estate structure and demography affected the capacity of slaves to form a self-sustaining society and behave as cultural actors, transferring and transforming African culture in the New World

    Abstract: Martin Klein's book is a history of slaves during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in three former French colonies. It investigates the changing nature of local slavery over time, and the evolving French attitudes towards it, through the phases of trade, conquest and colonial rule. The heart of the study focuses on the period between 1876 and 1922, when a French army composed largely of slave soldiers took massive numbers of slaves in the interior, while in areas near the coast, hesitant actions were taken against slave-raiding, trading and use. After 1900, the French withdrew state support of slavery, and as many as a million slaves left their masters. A second exodus occurred after World War I, when soldiers of slave origin returned home. The renegotiation of relationships between those who remained and their masters carries the story into the contemporary world

She examines debates on human rights, family relationships, sexuality, and notions of the individual and community to show how their meanings and significance in different parts of the world contest the issues which preoccupy contemporary Anglophone feminists. She then turns the focus back on Anglo culture to illustrate how the theories and politics of western feminism are viewed by non-western women

    Abstract: In the era of slave emancipation no ideal of freedom had greater power than that of contract. The antislavery claim was that the negation of chattel status lay in the contracts of wage labor and marriage. Signifying self-ownership, volition, and reciprocal exchange among formally equal individuals, contract became the dominant metaphor for social relations and the very symbol of freedom. This 1999 book explores how a generation of American thinkers and reformers - abolitionists, former slaves, feminists, labor advocates, jurists, moralists, and social scientists - drew on contract to condemn the evils of chattel slavery as well as to measure the virtues of free society. Their arguments over the meaning of slavery and freedom were grounded in changing circumstances of labor and home life on both sides of the Mason-Dixon line.     Abstract: Abstract: 'In diesem Beitrag wird analysiert, ob sich Einstellungen zur Berufstätigkeit der Frau in Ost- und Westdeutschland unterscheiden und ob sie von den Erwartungen an die eigene wirtschaftliche Zukunft beeinflußt werden. Anhand der Daten der ISSP (International Social Survey Program) Studie von 1994 zu 'Familie und sich ändernden Geschlechterrollen' und der Allgemeinen Bevölkerungsumfrage der Sozialwissenschaften (ALLBUS) 1996 kann gezeigt werden, daß Ost- und Westdeutsche den Einstellungsbereich ähnlich strukturieren. Sie unterscheiden sich aber deutlich in ihren Bewertungen der Themen dieses Einstellungsbereichs. Zudem zeigt sich, daß geschlechtsrollen-ideologische Themen in Westdeutschland (nicht in Ostdeutschland) von wirtschaftlichen Erwartungen moderiert werden: Westdeutsche mit pessimistischen Erwartungen an ihre wirtschaftliche Zukunft tendieren dazu, Frauen im Berufsleben mit traditionell-ideologischen Argumenten abzulehnen. Allgemeiner kann man aus diesen Befunden entnehmen

    Abstract: Abstract: 'Die hier vorgestellte Befragung von Frauen aus allen Stadtteilen Heidelbergs (Auftragsstudie der Stadt Heidelberg) zum Sicherheitsempfinden im öffentlichen Raum ergab, daß eine Bedrohung von mehr als 85 Prozent der Frauen aller Altersgruppen wahrgenommen wird. Diese Bedrohung ist an konkrete Räume gebunden, und es konnten eine Reihe von Gründen herauskristallisiert werden, die diese Orte zu Angst-Räumen werden lassen. Nicht zuletzt konnte durch Vergleiche mit Ergebnissen der Polizeistatistik ein Zusammenhang zwischen subjektiver Angst-Raum-Wahrnehmung und objektiven Tatbeständen aufgezeigt werden. Die meisten Frauen begegnen dieser Bedrohung mit sogenannten 'Vermeidungsstrategien', viele konnten aber auch konkrete Verbesserungsvorschläge nennen. Diese münden jedoch nicht selten weit über den kommunalen Handlungsmöglichkeiten, d.h. auf der gesellschaftlichen Ebene.' (Autorenreferat)

    Abstract: West African societies were transformed by the slave trade, even in regions where few slaves were exported. While many books have been written on the import and export trade and on warrior predation, Dr Searing's concern is with the effects of the Atlantic slave trade on the societies of the Senegal river valley in the eighteenth century. He shows that the growth of the Atlantic trade stimulated the development of slavery within West Africa. Slaves worked as seamen in the river and coasting trades, produced surplus grain to feed slaves in transit, and sometimes came to hold pivotal positions in the political structure of the coastal kingdoms of Senegambia. This local slave system had far-reaching consequences, leading to religious protest and slave rebellions. The changes in agricultural production fostered an ecological crisis

    Abstract: Until the late 1960s, most Western scholars studying the history, culture, social and political life and economy of Russia and the Soviet Union, paid scant attention to the participation and experience of women. The multifarious ways in which gender roles and perceptions of gender were influenced by and in turn influenced the heterogeneous cultures of the Soviet empire were largely ignored. However, this neglect has slowly been rectified and now the study of women and gender relations has become one of the most productive fields of research into Russian and Soviet society. This volume demonstrates the originality and diversity of this recent research. Written by leading Western scholars, it spans the last decade of tsarist Russia, the 1917 revolutions and the Soviet period.     Abstract: Abstract: Ausgehend von der Darstellung der spezifischen Merkmale, der Herstellung und des Vertriebs von Liebesroman-Literatur werden die Ursachen für die Popularität sowie die soziale und psychische Funktion des Konsums von Frauenheftromanen im weiblichen Lebenszusammenhang herausgearbeitet. Es wird gezeigt, daß der Erfolg der Hefte primär in der Abbildfunktion weiblichen Verlangens liegt und nicht in der Befriedigung weiblicher Bedürfnisse. Die Hefte sind ein Symptom der sozialen und psychischen Befindlichkeit von Frauen im patriarchalisch-kapitalistischen Gesellschaftssystem. Der Heftkonsum ist letztlich zu begreifen als Akt der Anpassung, des Arrangements mit den gesellschaftlichen Gegebenheiten und Ausdrucksform individuellen Widerstands durch die Imagination eines selbstgewählten, sorgenfreien Existenzentwurfs.     Abstract: This book is first and foremost an extended examination and discussion of the enslavement of men and women by others of their society and in particular of the means and causes of the gradual end of slavery in early medieval Europe between 500 and 1200. Drawing upon a very wide range of primary and archival sources, Professor Bonnassie places fresh findings about subjection, servitude and lordship in relation to the prevailing understanding of social history which has developed since the work of Marc Bloch. The author explains how slavery long persisted in southern France and Spain, as part of a public order that also sheltered free peasants, giving way in the tenth and eleventh centuries to a new regime of harsh lordships that mark the beginnings of feudalism. He shows that feudalism in south-western Europe was no less significant than in northern European lands.

    Abstract: Bartered Brides is a detailed study of marriage among the Maduzai, a tribal society in Afghan Turkistan. It is the first study of the area which looks in depth at both the domestic aspects of marriage and its relation to the productive and reproductive activities of women, as well as marriage as a means of managing political and economic conflict and competition. The fieldwork was carried out in the early 1970s before the 1978 coup and Soviet invasion. In this respect the book offers a unique account of a world that has disappeared.     Abstract: Abstract: Der Beitrag setzt sich kritisch mit dem Liebes-Konzept Norwoods, das in ihrem Buch 'Wenn Frauen zu sehr lieben' entwickelt wird, auseinander und zeigt auf, warum Frauen für Norwoods Thesen so ansprechbar sind und welche Implikationen dieses Konzept zugleich unannehmbar machen. Zunächst wird die inhaltliche Argumentation Norwoods nachgezeichnet. Es wird bestätigt, daß in Norwoods Analyse die typischen Elemente weiblicher Biographien herausgearbeitet werden. Kritik wird dann an der Interpretation der beobachtbaren Ergebnisse geübt, weil diese, wie gezeigt wird, wichtige Bereiche übergeht: die geschlechtsspezifische Prägung der Kindheitserfahrungen, die Realität des sexistischen Systems, d. h. das real existierende Geschlechterarrangement. Ausgehend von den im Buch beschriebenen Fallbeispielen wird gefragt, worin die Macht des Mannes gegenüber den Frauen besteht.     Abstract: Womanpower unveils the lively but little-reported debate on women's position in the modern Arab world. It paints a picture drawn from individual stories as well as from national development programmes and attempts to explain why the process of social change in the region has been slow and uneven by linking it to political and economic developments. By illustrating particular themes - personal status laws, development policies, political rights - with examples from specific countries, Nadia Hijab builds up an informative overview of the Arab world today. The title sums up the two-pronged approach: the process of integrating women into the modern work-force and of empowering them to enjoy equal rights and opportunities. The book argues that those seeking equal rights for Arab women cannot isolate this aim from the search to liberate Arab potential and resources and for democratic political systems.     Abstract: The cottage industry of France enjoyed enormous growth from the mid-eighteenth to the mid-nineteenth century. Through an intensive analysis of the social and economic impact of the expansion of this female-dominated industry, Gay Gullickson broadens our understanding of the variety and complexity of proto-industrial regions and of the proto-industrial processes. Focusing on the village of Auffay, located in the pays de Caux, a thriving agricultural region, Gullickson recreates the experiences of the women and men who spun and wove for the urban putting-out merchants. Social analysis of local memoirs, government reports, notarial and judicial records, and village cahiers de doléances, enables Gullickson to offer a more nuanced and accurate view of the causes and consequences of the expansion of the cottage textile industry in the pre-factory era. Her 1987 study is further enhanced by a quantitative analysis based primarily on the reconstitution of the families of the 727 couples who married in Auffay between 1750 and 1850.

    Abstract: This study examines the history of the sugar economy and the peculiar development of plantation society over a three hundred year period in Bahia, a major sugar plantation zone and an important terminus of the Atlantic slave trade. Drawing on little-used archival sources, plantations accounts, and notarial records, Professor Schwartz has examined through both quantitative and qualitative methods the various groups that made up plantation society. While he devotes much attention to masters and slaves, he views slavery ultimately as part of a larger structure of social and economic relations. The peculiarities of sugar-making and the nature of plantation labour are used throughout the book as keys to an understanding of roles and relationships in plantation society. A comparative perspective is also employed, so that studies of slavery elsewhere in the Americas inform the analysis, while at many points direct comparisons of the Bahian case with other plantation societies are also made

    Abstract: The nineteenth century in Egypt was a period of rapid social and economic change, brought about by the country's developing ties with the European economy. Focusing on lower-class women, this study traces changes in the work role and family life of peasant women in the countryside and craftswomen and traders in Cairo, and explores the world of the slave woman. The effects of capitalist transformation on women are studied in detail, using material from the Islamic court records. The effects of the Egyptian process of state formation and colonial rule are discussed: the growth of the state apparatus, its social services and repressive means, brought new kinds of intervention into women's lives. The book provides a unique account of the very active economic, social and political roles of nineteenth-century women, from the peasant and street pedlar to the slave of the harem

    Abstract: Abstract: Es geht um Auffassungen über die verminderte Leistungsfähigkeit der Frau aufgrund der Menstruation. Die Darstellung beruht auf der Analyse vorhandener Literatur der Bereiche Arbeitsphysiologie, -medizin, Arbeits- und Betriebspsychologie und -soziologie. Durch überwiegend auf negative Auswirkungen der Menstruation zielende Untersuchungen wird ein Zusammenhang zwischen dem menstruellen Zyklus und dem Nachlassen physischer Leistungsfähigkeit und der Zunahme psychischer Aggressivität festgestellt. Die Autorin vergleicht diese Darstellung mit der Verteufelung der Frau zur Zeit der Hexenverfolgung und schließt daraus, daß diese Diskriminierung von und Gewalt gegen Frauen als Abwehr der Männer aus Angst vor ihren eigenen weiblichen Veranlagungen interpretiert werden kann.     Abstract: This is a study of the effects of 'modernization' on the social and economic world of women in Morocco. Vanessa Maher suggests that three systems of social stratification modify one another: a system of classes based on relation to the means of production; a system of estates, differentiated by inherited status; and a system of segmentary tribal groups, based on territorial rights. Although all Moroccans use all these systems on different occasions it is the women who, faced with their own exclusion from wage-earning, along with the instability of marriage and the inadequacy of most family incomes, respond by perpetually reconstituting the groups on which they must depend, those based on territorial rights and putative kinship. By observing these social networks, Maher has been able to identify part of what inhibits the development of class consciousness, and what favours a clientistic political structure

    Abstract: In 1812 a number of slave traders were prosecuted in Sierra Leone, the focus of Britain's efforts to eradicate the trade. First published in 1813, this report is believed to have been written by the presiding judge, Robert Thorpe. The trials provoked debate as Thorpe found one trader guilty, but commuted his sentence on the condition that other traders were persuaded to cease their business. Another was dealt with severely as he displayed complicity in evading the laws. Thorpe's judgments relied upon not only the application of the anti-slavery laws, but also the notion of natural laws transcending those of nations, a notion which came under consideration in the landmark Somerset v. Stewart case of 1772, concerning an escaped slave. Published in 1876, a report on this case is also reissued here. Taken together, these two texts provide valuable source material on the history of the slave trade's abolition

She exhorts young ladies to avoid vanity and other vices through devoted study of scripture, and writes of the importance of choosing worthy and sensible friends who can be trusted to offer good advice. Chapone's posthumously published works, in two volumes, are also reissued in this series
