Abstract: This book offers a critical analysis of global mobilities across China and Italy in history. In three periods in the twentieth century, new patterns of physical mobilities and cultural contact were established between the two countries which were either novel at the time of their emergence or impactful on subsequent periods. The first two chapters provide overviews of writings by Italians in China and by Chinese in Italy in the twentieth century. The remaining chapters cover: Republican Chinas relationships with Italy and Italian Fascist colonialism in China during the 1920s1930s; Italian travelers to China during the Cold War from the 1950s to the 1970s; migrations between China and Italy during the 2000s2010s. In analyzing these cultural mobilities, this book opens a new line of inquiry in Chinese-Italian Cultural Studies, which has been dominated by historical study, and contributes a significant case study to the scholarship on global cultural mobilities

Abstract: This book is dedicated to the role of soft law in the enforcement of EU law vis-à-vis the Member States. Apart from the Treaty infringement procedure, there is an increasing number of procedures, mostly laid down in secondary law, by which the EU – often availing itself of soft law – aims at ensuring Member States’ compliance with EU law. These procedures are compared with each other, also with respect to their use of soft law, and their conformity with primary law is examined

Abstract: This Handbook offers new and previously unexplored comparative approaches to the field of New Cinema History. The volume brings together contributions focussing on historical and contemporary comparative case studies of cinema-going practices, cinema distribution, exhibition and reception from a global perspective. Engaging with a wealth of empirical and archive-based sources the volume explores a wide range of methodological and theoretical approaches. This Handbook is a key addition to debates on the relationship between film industry and cinema-going practices across different political and cultural geographical dimensions. Abstract: This open-access book explores the security dynamics amid the polarization, shifting borders, and liquid governance that define the Zeitenwende era in Europe's eastern neighbourhood and Central Asia. Presenting various case studies, the volume unveils the intricate web of border dynamics and practices, including the nuanced interplay of border disputes within the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) member states. The contributions shed new light on how contested borders and liquid modes of governance have impacted the engagement of international organizations such as the European Union (EU), North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and OSCE in security crises and conflict prevention. Delving deeper, a special part dissects the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and examines European and international responses. By analyzing the stances of diverse European countries, their neighborhood, and international organizations, this section uncovers commonalities and disparities in their approaches to the Ukrainian crisis.

Abstract: Over a million Kurdish-Yezidi refugees are dispersed across European cities and towns. However, they are neither recognized as a distinct community of stateless immigrants nor as a distinct European ethnic or religious minority. They are frequently utilized as data sources without having a voice to address their challenges. This oral testimony project, moving beyond, but contributing to, conventional academic research, provides these communities with a space to tackle multiple questions in their own languages and with their own voices. The book seeks to answer what drives their departures from their home countries, how they escape, what shapes their lives in receiving cities, and finally, how homeland affairs influence their lives in new environments. By addressing all these themes, this book presents refugee-centric knowledge by and with refugees as objects and subjects of their narratives and transcends neoliberal humanitarian, state-centric, and colonial hegemonic epistemes that limit refugees' epistemic capabilities and viewpoints. Veysi Dag is a research fellow of the Minerva Foundation at the Department of International Relations at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He is also a research associate at SOAS, University of London. His research interests focus on studies of migration and diaspora, governance, social movements and transnationalism, comparative politics with a focus on refugee and migration policies in Europe, peacebuilding and conflict transformation, and regional policy analysis with a focus on Middle Eastern politics and the Kurdish-Turkish conflict.

Abstract: Our modern legal system is based on the principle of equality. But is equality perhaps not also a concept that inadequately describes the complexity of normative orders? Highly differentiated societies with a multitude of collective identities and functional rationalities are in a permanent state of tension with this legal postulate. The contributions to this volume examine how this tension has developed in Europe and Latin America over the last 200 years

Abstract: This book provides new and established researchers with innovative methodologies and research strategies to explore European security integration from a different perspective, challenging traditional theoretical interpretations. It takes a step back from well-established theoretical approaches to the European Union’s (EU) Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) and Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) to ask more fundamental questions about the core assumptions underpinning research on European security integration. It supports methodological innovations with an analysis of the most significant empirical problems of European security governance, including the war in Ukraine or the role of Russia in European security. In the last chapter, the author offers ideas for new pedagogical approaches to teaching European Studies. Kamil Zwolski is Associate Professor in International Politics at the University of Southampton, UK, and Jean Monnet Chair of European Security Governance. His research interests include the theory and practice of European security and its governance, Europe-Russia relations and the role of the EU/NATO in European security. His previous book, European Security in Integration Theory (2018), examines federalism and functionalism – two fundamentals, yet largely forgotten, theories of international integration, in the context of the war in Ukraine and contemporary European security order.

Abstract: “In his latest work, Stöhs expands his analytical horizon to assess post-Cold War European naval operations, driven by national and transnational requirements, and their role within the traditional NATO alliance structure. Stöhs skillfully teases apart strategy, force structures, and operations to reaffirm a vital truth – that collective naval employment amongst NATO allies and partners remains the most desirable policy choice.” — Admiral James Stavridis, USN, (Ret), 16th Supreme Allied Commander at NATO “Western navies are facing both, a looming cold war and an ongoing hybrid war at sea. For that, they must be readied. This is the definitive study on European naval power and will be indispensable to policy-makers, naval analysts, military officers, and industry leaders alike.” — Dr. Sebastian Bruns, Senior Researcher Institute for Security Policy, Kiel University “Naval forces play a critical role in safeguarding Europe’s prosperity and constitute the linchpin upon which rests the defense of the transatlantic alliance. Stöhs does a masterful job in providing an in-depth view of the evolution of European naval power from the end of the Cold War to today’s era of hybrid threats.” — Admiral James Foggo III, USN, (Ret), Former Commander of United States Naval Forces Europe-Africa and Allied Joint Force Command Naples This book charts new waters in the study of European naval power. It explores the evolution of Europe’s navies from the final days of the Cold War to a period of hybrid wars and renewed strategic competition, manifest in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and China’s increasingly aggressive behavior in the Asia-Pacific Region. The author highlights how inconsistencies and shortsighted naval policies have led to dangerous capability shortfalls and offers several recommendations for navies to navigate successfully the future maritime environment. Dr. Jeremy Stöhs is a security and defense analyst, the Deputy Director of the Austrian Center for Intelligence, Propaganda & Security Studies (ACIPSS), and a Fellow at the Institute for Security Policy at Kiel University (ISPK).

China-US Climate Relations and the Role of the EU: A Chinese Perspective -- Part VII: Concluding Remarks -- Chapter 14. Conclusion – Europe as a Moderating Force in the US-China Strategic Competition.
Abstract: This volume examines some of the major challenges and opportunities for Europe in the light of the intensifying US-China global strategic rivalry. In doing so, the book investigates European roles and behavior in the contemporary US-China-Europe triangular relationship. While the book's focus is on Europe, the contributors originate from, or are based in, the US and China, thus presenting a unique outside-in perspective to the analysis of European conduct in the areas of security, geo-politics, geo-economics, global governance, development, and climate change. Each area is investigated by one American and one Chinese scholar, respectively, presenting the different views held on Europe’s behavior and positioning in the US and China. In addition to providing critical assessments of Europe’s roles and performance as seen through the prism of their respective country, contributors also pose concrete policy recommendations for Europe. The book will appeal to students, scholars, and researchers of political science and international relations, as well as policy-makers interested in a better understanding of Europe's role in the US-China rivalry and its relationship to the two countries.

Abstract: "Governing Police Stops Across Europe should be essential reading for all those involved in police governance, scrutiny, and practice.” --Gill Imery, former Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Constabulary Scotland This book takes a critical and comparative approach to the analysis of the governance of police stops across Europe. It draws on an EU COST Action research network on Police Stops which engaged academics and practitioners from 29 countries to better understand the practice of police stops. It begins by examining how police stops are defined and the various legal rules and levels of accountability afforded. The chapters are arranged by theme to focus on a core aspect of the governance of police stops. These include: legal frameworks and police discretion; internal governance; external accountability and civilian oversight; possibilities for legal recourse; and the different roles of data and technology. Each compares the distinct approaches evident across Europe, often employing case studies. The book adopts a critical approach, acknowledging governance as contested and involving diverse (state, non-state and supranational) actors. It considers implications for policing in a rapidly changing environment globally. Elizabeth Aston is Professor of Criminology at Edinburgh Napier University, UK, and the Director of the Scottish Institute for Policing Research. Sofie De Kimpe is full time Professor of Criminology at the Department of Criminology at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), Belgium and was Chair of the EU COST Action on Police Stops. Abstract: What does it mean to live under occupation? How does it shape the culture and identities of European nations? How does it affect the way we write and read literature? These are fundamental questions that set the stage for an in-depth exploration. Focusing on the literary works of writers from various European countries that were occupied by Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union or the Allies during and after World War II, the contributions in this edited volume seek to unravel the complex interplay between historical circumstances and literary expression. Centered on the concept of occupation literature as a genre in its own right, differentiating it from ‘war literature’, the book navigates this subtle distinction, drawing connections with the Holocaust novel and extending the timeframe beyond Nazi occupation. This volume argues that the multifaceted experiences of occupation have played a pivotal role in shaping European identities. Moreover, the volume links European identities to the experience of occupation by unveiling the complex and diverse ways in which writers respond to historical and political circumstances. Introducing the concept of ‘affective realism’ and exploring its intersection with the occupation novel, the book provides nuanced insights into the intricate relationship between history, identity, and literature. It combines theoretical perspectives relevant to researchers in the humanities with detailed case studies, generating a truly interdisciplinary perspective, enriched by a strong transnational dimension, creating a cohesive narrative that intervenes innovatively in the fields of literary, cultural, and historical criticism.

Abstract: New research into medieval women from the Anglo-Saxon to the late medieval period demonstrates their energy, defiance and wit. The phenomenon of medieval women's middle age is a stage in the lifecycle that has been frequently overlooked in preference for the examination of female youth and old age. The essays collected here, ranging from the Anglo-Saxon to the late medieval period, and drawing variously from literary studies, history, law, art and theology, address this lacuna. Taking a variety of critical approaches, the contributors consider medieval definitions, paradigms andexperiences of female middle age, analysing how the middle-aged woman perceived herself subjectively, as well as how she was perceived by others. They seek to challenge the received wisdom that in the middle ages, at forty, womenwere deemed "old" and, from that point onwards, their thoughts should be focused on preparing for death. On the contrary, this collection demonstrates their energy, defiance and wit. Sue Niebrzydowski is Lecturer in English, Bangor University, Wales. Contributors: Jane Geddes, Clare A. Lees, Carol M. Abstract: "Getting divorced and remarried are now common practices in European societies, even if the rules differ from one country to the next. Civil marriage law still echoes religious marriage law, which for centuries determined which persons could enter into marriage with each other and how validly contracted marriages could be ended. Religions and denominations also had different regulations regarding whether a divorce only ended marital obligations or also permitted remarriage during the lifetime of the divorced spouse. This book deals with predominantly handwritten documents of divorce proceedings from the British Isles to Western, Central and Southeastern Europe, and from 1600 to the 1930s. The praxeological analysis reveals the arguments and strategies put forward to obtain or prevent divorce, as well as the social and, above all, economic conditions and arrangements connected with divorce. The contributions break new ground by combining previously often separate fields of research and regions of investigation. It makes clear that the gender order doesn't always run along religious lines, as was too often assumed. This book will be of interest to all scholars and students of economic, social, religious, cultural, legal and gender history as well as gender and well-being in a broader sense"--...

Abstract: Evidence for childhood and youth from the sixth century to the sixteenth, but with particular emphasis on later medieval England. Moving on from the legacy of Ariès, these essays address evidence for childhood and youth from the sixth century to the sixteenth, but with particular emphasis on later medieval England. The contents include the idea of childhoodin the writing of Gregory of Tours, skaldic verse narratives and their implications for the understanding of kingship, Jewish communities of Northern Europe for whom children represented the continuity of a persecuted faith, children in the records of the northern Italian Humiliati, the meaning of romance narratives centred around the departure of the hero or heroine from the natal hearth, the age at which later medieval English youngsters left home, how far they travelled and where they went, literary sources revealing the politicisation of the idea of the child, and the response of young, affluent females to homiletic literature and the iconography of the virgin martyrs in the later middle ages. Abstract: In the following dialogue, Anika Keinz, the invited discussant at the panel »Struggles over Europe« forming part of the »Troubling Gender« conference, and Paweł Lewicki talk about how race, gender, and sexuality are not only entangled in the East-West dynamic but co-constitute the East-West dichotomy too. They discuss racial relations and states of morality, in grappling with the question of what exactly race-critical studies can contribute to both the improved analysis of this dichotomy and to the examination of developments in Europe: What can we observe when looking, for example, at gender and sexual politics in Poland from a race-critical perspective and what can this tell us about nationalisms? Doing so, they take up the discussion Lewicki started, together with Randi Elin Gressgård and Rafał Smoczyński, in the special issue of Intersections. East European Journal of Society and Politics »Struggles over Europe. Postcolonial East/West Dynamics of Race, Gender and Sexuality« (2020, 6/3). This special issue explores the dynamics pertaining to (racialized) gender and sexuality, as well as their local expressions, and asks how they are embedded in broader dynamics and discourses on Europe, Europeanization, and the transformation of (il)liberal states. Lewicki and Keinz then continue their conversation and pick up on certain aspects that came up during the panel discussion. They reflect on how categories such as »race,« »gender,« and »sexuality« contribute to the reproduction of various understandings of »Europe« and »European modernity« and to the (self-)produced notions of »East« and »West« respectively.
East European Journal of Society and Politics "Struggles over Europe. Postcolonial East/West Dynamics of Race, Gender and Sexuality" (Bd. 6/3, 2020). "West" beitragen.

Abstract: What makes some multiethnic states integrate and others descend into civil war? Ishiyama and Breuning extend traditional explanations centered on socioeconomic, cultural, and historical factors to argue that the actions of leaders of ethnic segments-too often ignored-are also critical determinants of policy outcomes. Applying a framework derived from comparative politics and IR theory, the authors explore two sets of empirical cases: the emergence of new nationalisms in old European democracies (the United Kingdom and Belgium) and the reemergence of old nationalisms in several new democracies (Bulgaria, Slovakia, Estonia, and Latvia). Their work sheds crucially important light on an issue that is one of the most prominent in world politics today

Abstract: This book reveals the importance of personal letters in the history of European women between the year 1000 and the advent of the telephone. It explores the changing ways that women used correspondence for self-expression and political mobilization over this period, enabling them to navigate the myriad gendered restrictions that limited women s engagement in the world. Whether written from the medieval cloister, or the renaissance court, or the artisan s workshop, or the drawing room, letters crossed geographical and social distance and were mobile in ways that women themselves could not always be. Women wrote to govern, to argue, to plead, and to demand. They also wrote to express love and intimacy, and in so doing, to explain and to understand themselves. This book argues that the personal letter was a crucial place for European women s self-fashioning, and that exploring the history of their letters offers a profound insight into their subjectivity and agency over time

Abstract: Starting from a fishbowl discussion which has taken place at the conference, this paper discusses what can be gained from thinking across genderqueer theories and anthropological Europeanization research. It argues that thinking queerly includes a skepticism towards identitarian and normative understandings of Europe, as well as an ethnographic attention to that which emerges in the gaps and cracks of Europeanization, while keeping in mind the ways in which institutions working in the name of Europe generate heterogeneous experiences resulting in unequal and differentially distributed, multiple Europes. ‘Queering Europe’ oscillates between an emphasis on the central role of the sexual and the gendered in imaginations of Europe and destabilizing notions of Europe in a more general sense and is as such closely related to post-/decolonial approaches. This analytical move has three dimensions to it: Firstly, queering Europe aims at deconstructing hegemonic imaginaries of Europe. Secondly, it makes visible the pluralistic and fragmented nature of Europe(s) and the ambivalent and sometimes unforeseen consequences processes of Europeanization are accompanied by. Thirdly, queering Europe can be envisioned as a way of imagining and thinking Europe through a “critical utopianism” (Mbembe 2019) that puts solidarity center stage. In all three dimensions, an ethnography informed by decolonial critiques as well as by proposals for queering methodologies constitutes our chosen epistemological tool to gain deeper insights into queering Europe as a mode of knowledge production and political vision.

Abstract: Over the last few decades, the politics of gender and sexuality have turned extremely hostile across Europe. Long fought for rights and antidiscriminatory politics have come under heavy attack, while Gender Studies programs have been banned. In tandem, feminist arguments are being instrumentalized by right-wing movements so as to cement nationalist projects and racist positions. This turmoil regarding the politics of gender in Europe has become even more complex as gender, sexuality, and race find themselves used as markers of both progress and backwardness within the postcolonial, postsocialist European landscape reproducing old and creating new hierarchies within the societies and between them. Based on the 2021 conference “Troubling Gender: New Turbulences in the Politics of Gender in Europe,” organized by the Commission on Gender Research and Queer Anthropology of the German Association for European Ethnology and Empirical Cultural Analyses, this issue of Berliner Blätter hence assembles an array of analytical papers as well as polyvocal written discussions seeking to make sense of these developments as well as of their local and regional articulations and effects. The issue brings together queer/feminist voices and analyses from the Eastern and Western European contexts; furthermore, it examines the possibilities for solidarity across different positionalities and engages with diverse histories of struggle. The issue presents analyses informed by gender and queer theory, as mostly based on ethnographic research, and thus ultimately allows us to better understand the current conjuncture of the politics of gender and sexuality in and of Europe. With this, it partakes in the ongoing feminist and queer struggles to build a better future for all those concerned.

Abstract: This book explores the challenges of teaching European history in the 21st century and provides research-informed approaches to history teaching that combine civic education, historical consciousness, and the teaching of controversial social issues. With contributions from researchers across Europe, the book includes both theoretical and case study chapters. The first part of the book addresses issues such as globalization and teaching in an interconnected world, using multicultural and critical approaches, decolonizing education, and teaching uncomfortable narratives of the past. The second part of the book showcases thematic chapters dedicated to teaching intersecting topics in the European curriculum such as violence and armed conflict, social inequality, gender equality, the technological revolution, and religion. Ultimately, this volume promotes criticality, civic engagement, and reflection on social issues, thereby prompting methodological change in the teaching of history as we know it. It will appeal to researchers and students of history education, democratic education, and citizenship education, as well as teacher educators and trainee teachers in history

Abstract: Foundations and mechanisms of Islamophobia in the West. Islamophobia as a Form of Radicalisation discusses the scope and fragmented boundaries of Islamophobia as a concept and a sociopolitical reality. The fifteen chapters of this collection cover and connect interdisciplinary research, media content analysis, media discourse analysis, ethnographic research, intersectoral advocacy work, and action research conducted in Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Poland, Portugal, and Spain. Confronted with an Islamophobia that is growing as a symptom of broader societal malaise in the West, a resistance against it is also arising. It is now a question of better understanding the foundations and mechanisms of this metasolidarity and resistance. Islamophobia as a Form of Radicalisation offers recommendations for urgent consideration by Muslim citizens of Canada and Europe, media professionals, civil society and academic stakeholders, policymakers at the municipal, provincial and federal levels.

Abstract: This is the first extensive treatment of leading judicial institutions under Nazi rule in WWII. It focusses on all democratic countries under German occupation, and provides the details for answering questions like: how can law serve as an instrument of defence against an oppressive regime? Are the courts always the guardians of democracy and rule of law? What role was there for international law? How did the courts deal with dismissals, new appointees, new courts, forced German ordinances versus national law? How did judges justify their actions, help citizens, appease the enemy, protest against injustice? Experts from all democracies that were occupied by the Nazis paint vivid pictures of oppression, collaboration, and resistance. The results are interpreted in a socio-legal framework introducing the concept of 'moral hygiene' to explain the clash between normative and descriptive approaches in public opinion and scholarship concerning officials' behaviour in war-time

Abstract: In state formation research, princely houses have been a blind spot. The development of states has been discussed from many perspectives, like interstate competition, internal social conflicts, fiscal-military developments, etc., but at the centre of most European states, there was a princely house. These ruling houses have been overlooked in studies about state formation. What's more, when discussing such dynasties, the vertical chronological perspective (grandfather-father-son) is all dominating, for instance in the focus on dynastic continuity, dynastic culture and representation, and the like. This collection of essays highlights the horizontal perspective (ruler, all children, siblings, cousins), in asking how the members of a princely family acted as a power network. The quest is to develop an understanding how this family network interplayed with other factors in the state formation process. This volume brings together existing knowledge of the topic with the aim of exchanging insights and furthering knowledge

Abstract: Bereits im 18.

Abstract: "The field of biopolitics encompasses issues from health and hygiene, birth rates, fertility and sexuality, life expectancy and demography, to eugenics and racial regimes. This book is the first to provide a comprehensive view on these issues for Central and Eastern Europe in the 20th century. The cataclysms of imperial collapse, World War(s) and the Holocaust but also the rise of state socialism after 1945 provided extraordinary and distinct conditions for the governing of life and death. The volume collects the latest research and empirical studies from the region to showcase the diversity of biopolitical regimes in their regional and global context - from hunger relief for Hungarian children after World War I to abortion legislation in communist Poland. It underlines the similarities as well, demonstrating how biopolitical strategies in this area often revolved around the notion of an endangered nation; and how ideological schemes and post-imperial experiences in Eastern Europe further complicate a "western" understanding of democratic participatory and authoritarian repressive biopolitics. The new geographical focus invites scholars and students of social and human sciences to reconsider established perspectives on the history of population management and the history of Europe"--

Abstract: This book provides an entry point to the most cutting-edge lines of research on popular political mobilisation in Europe. It brings together leading scholars from Germany, France, Britain, the Netherlands and Spain. The chapters explore the connected dimensions of popular participation within different countries and across borders, covering the topics of iconoclasm, popular acclamations, street politics, associations, petitions and electoral agitation. Focusing on the role of disenfranchised citizens and women, this collection broadens the themes of traditional political historical research that has identified political participation with the right to vote and struggles for political inclusion, and brings a wide array of formal and informal political practices to the centre of nineteenth-century European life. A must-read for scholars, undergraduates, and graduate students wishing to explore multiple dimensions of the history of political engagement and politicisation. Diego Palacios Cerezales is a Senior Researcher at the Complutense University of Madrid in Spain. Previously, he was a Lecturer in European History at the University of Stirling, in the UK, and he has also held teaching and research positions at various Spanish and Portuguese universities. Diego’s research focuses on the transnational history of petitioning from the Age of Revolution to the third wave of democratisation (1789–1989), as well as on the history of policing in Spain and Portugal. He has written and edited several books, and published sixteen journal articles. Oriol Luján holds a lectureship at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, in Spain. Prior to this, he held a postdoctoral position at the Complutense University of Madrid, as well as visiting positions at the European University Institute in Florence, and the Sorbonne in Paris. Oriol specialises in the cultural history of politics and parliamentary representation in nineteenth-century Spain. He has written several books, book chapters and journal articles. .
