    Abstract: Social Geographies, as spatial location, is a factor relevant to understanding the variety of peoples interpretations and appropriations of educational innovations and changes. Their location in the social space also influences their response to change. In the field of educational change, social space means for example, skin colour, gender distribution of teachers in one school, childrens self-cultural representations or parents religious attitudes. By using the notion of Social Geographies in the context of educational change, the authors address the following questions: How initiatives in a classroom or department are influenced by the surrounding context of the school, the district or the nation, How innovation spreads or diffuses from one school to another, How and whether reforms can be scaled up from a few schools to a whole system, How seemingly standardised reforms affect schools differently depending on where they are located, How schools influence one another, How the identities of, and interrelationships among, schools are affected by technology, principles of market competition and choice, and other initiatives. This volume is relevant to educationalists, policy-makers, teachers, and students interested in a more complex approach to understand and intervene in educational change processes.

    Abstract: Worin besteht die 'unbedingte Gastfreundschaft'? Lässt sie sich lediglich als philosophisches Konstrukt denken oder beschreibt sie eine interkulturelle Praxis? Mona Motakef untersucht am Beispiel des deutsch-südafrikanischen Bildungsnetzwerkes Inservice Education for Teachers of Disadvantaged Learner and Communities (INSET 4 TODLAC) Prozesse und Diskurse, in denen sich Beschreibungen des Eigenen und Fremden finden. Wie gestalten sich die Begegnungen? Gab es Konstellationen 'unbedingter Gastfreundschaft?' Was implizierte der Gastfreundschaftspakt? Der französische Philosoph Jacques Derrida unterscheidet zwei Formen von Gastfreundschaft: Die bedingte Gastfreundschaft, der Gastfreundschaftspakt, hat rechtliche und politische Dimensionen. Die unbedingte Gastfreundschaft bedeutet einen Bruch mit dem Pakt, sie bildet eine ethische Beziehung mit dem 'absolut Anderen'. Im Gegensatz zum Gastfreundschaftspakt mit dem Fremden fordert die Begegnung mit dem 'absolut Anderen' die totale Öffnung, welche sich der Klassifizierung und Assimilierung enthält. Wie gingen die Lehrkräfte, die von Berufswegen immer weiter wissen müssen, mit Unsicherheit, Dissens und Unstetigkeit um? Führten ambivalente Situationen zu einem veränderten Umgang mit dem Anderen? Wird der Andere in das eigene Denken übersetzt und somit assimiliert? Oder führen die Begegnungen zu Ambiguitätstoleranz, zur Kompetenz, Unsicherheiten auszuhalten? 〈dt.〉

    Abstract: This study features a collection of eight case studies of exemplary cases from secondary schools as well as international literature reviews and policy analysis related to formative assessment – the frequent assessments of student progress to identify learning needs and shape teaching. It examines such issues as benefits and barriers for using formative assessment, policy frameworks and implications, and formative assessment in practice. Achievement gains attributed to formative assessment are reported as being quite high, but it is not yet practiced systematically. This book makes the case for use of formative assessment and shows how it can be put into practice.

    Abstract: Following the burst of the dot-com bubble in 2000, scepticism about e-learning replaced over-enthusiasm. Rhetoric aside, where do we stand? Why and how do different kinds of tertiary education institutions engage in e-learning? What do institutions perceive to be the pedagogic impact of e-learning in its different forms? How do institutions understand the costs of e-learning? How might e-learning impact staffing and staff development? This book addresses these and many other questions. The study is based on a qualitative survey of practices and strategies carried out by the OECD Centre for Educational Research and Innovation (CERI) at 19 tertiary education institutions from 11 OECD member countries – Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States – and 2 non-member countries – Brazil and Thailand. This qualitative survey is complemented by the findings of a quantitative survey of e-learning in tertiary education carried out in 2004 by the Observatory on Borderless Higher Education (OBHE) in some Commonwealth countries.

    Abstract: This publication provides policy guidance in an area that has been given little policy priority until recent years. It brings together key lessons from 17 OECD countries, providing evidence on the strategies in place to improve adults’ participation in learning. It addresses potential barriers to learning as well as the policies to remedy them. Among these are policies for increasing and promoting the benefits of adult learning to make them transparent and easily recognised. Other policy levers include economic incentives and co-financing mechanisms that can raise the efficiency of adult learning provision, while delivering quality learning that is adapted to adults’ needs. Finally, policy making can be improved via co-ordination and coherence in a field that is characterised by a wide variety of stakeholders, including ministries of education and ministries of labour.

    Abstract: The concept of 'communities of practice' (Lave and Wenger 1991, Wenger 1998) has become an influential one in education, management, and social sciences in recent years. This book consists of a series of studies by linguists and educational researchers, examining and developing aspects of the concept which have remained relatively unexplored. Framings provided by theories of language-in-use, literacy practices, and discourse extend the concept, bringing to light issues around conflict, power, and the significance of the broader social context which have been overlooked. Chapters assess the relationship between communities of practice and other theories including literacy studies, critical language studies, the ethnography of communication, socio-cultural activity theory, and sociological theories of risk. Domains of empirical research reported include schools, police stations, adult basic education, higher education, and multilingual settings. The book highlights the need to incorporate thinking around language-in-use, power and conflict, and social context into communities of practice.

    Abstract: This study reports on the latest trends in long-term care policies in nineteen OECD countries: Australia, Austria, Canada, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Japan, Korea, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Mexico, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. It studies lessons learned from countries that undertook major reforms over the past decade. Trends in expenditure, financing and the number of care recipients are analysed based on new data on cross-country differences. Special attention is given to experience with programmes that provide consumers of services with a choice of care options, including cash to family caregivers. Concise country profiles of long-term care systems and an overview on demography and living situations of older persons make this complex policy field more accessible.

    Abstract: America's sense of space has always been tied to what Hayden White called the "narrativization" of real events. If the awe-inspiring manifestations of nature in America (Niagara Falls, Virginia's Natural Bridge, the Grand Canyon, etc.) were often used as a foil for projecting utopian visions and idealizations of the nation's exceptional place among the nations of the world, the rapid technological progress and its concomitant appropriation of natural spaces served equally well, as David Nye argues, to promote the dominant cultural idiom of exploration and conquest.From the beginning, American attitudes towards space were thus utterly contradictory if not paradoxical; a paradox that scholars tried to capture in such hybrid concepts as the "middle landscape" (Leo Marx), an "engineered New Earth" (Cecelia Tichi), or the "technological sublime" (David Nye). Not only was America's concept of space paradoxical, it has always also been a contested terrain, a site of continuous social and cultural conflict. Many foundational issues in American history (the dislocation of Native and African Americans, the geo-political implications of nation-building, immigration and transmigration, the increasing division and "clustering" of contemporary American society, etc.) involve differing ideals and notions of space. Quite literally, space and its various ideological appropriations formed the arena where America's search for identity (national, political, cultural) has been staged.     Abstract: Building on recent trends in the humanities and especially on scholarship done under the rubric of cultural transfer, this volume emphasizes the processes by which Americans took up, responded to, and transformed German cultural material for their own purposes. The fourteen essays by scholars from the US and Germany treat such topics as translation, the reading of German literature in America, the adaptation of German ideas and educational ideals, the reception and transformation of European genres of writing, and the status of the "German" and the "European" in celebrations of American culture and criticisms of American racism. The volume contributes to the ongoing re-conception of American culture as significantly informed by non-English-speaking European cultures. It also participates in the efforts of historians and literary scholars to re-theorize the construction of national cultures. Questions regarding hybridity, cultural agency, and strategies of acculturation have long been at the center of postcolonial studies, but as this volume demonstrates, these phenomena are not merely operative in encounters between colonizers and colonized: they are also fundamental to the early American reception and appropriation of German cultural materials. 〈BR〉〈BR〉 Contributors: Hinrich C.     Abstract: There is increased interest in California and other states in providing universal access to publicly funded high-quality preschool education for one or two years prior to kindergarten entry. In considering such a program, policymakers and the public focus on the potential benefits from a universal preschool program, as well as the estimated costs. This study aims to inform such deliberations by conducting an analysis of the economic returns from investing in preschool education in the state of California. The benefit-cost analysis undertaken in this study indicates that there can be positive returns for California society from investing in a one-year high-quality universal preschool program. The authors' baseline estimate, which is arguably conservative, is that every dollar invested by the public sector beyond current spending will generate $2.62 in returns. And this estimate does not account for an array of other benefits not captured in their analysis because of data limitations. Those other potential benefits include lower intangible losses from crime and child abuse and neglect averted, reduced reliance on public welfare programs, improved labor market outcomes for parents of preschoolers, improved health and well-being of preschool participants, and the intergenerational transmission of favorable benefits. Broader economic and noneconomic benefits may accrue in other areas as well, including labor force recruitment and participation rates, workforce performance, economic growth, international competitiveness, and the distribution of economic and social well-being

This study aims to inform such deliberations by conducting an analysis of the economic returns from investing in preschool education in the state of California. The benefit-cost analysis undertaken in this study indicates that there can be positive returns for California society from investing in a one-year high-quality universal preschool program. The authors' baseline estimate, which is arguably conservative, is that every dollar invested by the public sector beyond current spending will generate $2.62 in returns. And this estimate does not account for an array of other benefits not captured in their analysis because of data limitations. Those other potential benefits include lower intangible losses from crime and child abuse and neglect averted, reduced reliance on public welfare programs, improved labor market outcomes for parents of preschoolers, improved health and well-being of preschool participants, and the intergenerational transmission of favorable benefits. Broader economic and noneconomic benefits may accrue in other areas as well, including labor force recruitment and participation rates, workforce performance, economic growth, international competitiveness, and the distribution of economic and social well-being

    Abstract: (Sozial-) Pädagogische Arbeit mit unbegleiteten minderjährigen Flüchtlingen stellt extrem hohe und vielschichtige Anforderungen an die involvierten Fachkräfte. Gegenüber den ausgeprägten Lernbedürfnissen, ungewöhnlich deutlichen Lernvorstellungen und teilweise massiven Lernproblemen junger Flüchtlinge erweisen sich die hiesigen (pädagogischen) Gewohnheitsbilder von Kind und Kindheit sowie die Vorstellungen von Lernen, Lehren und Erziehung als unzureichend. Gleichzeitig trifft in diesem Arbeitsfeld Pädagogik, vom Grundsatz her zukunftsorientiert, auf die politische Entscheidung, dass minderjährige unbegleitete Flüchtlinge in Deutschland keine Zukunft haben (sollten). Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist es, auf der Grundlage der Lerntheorie Klaus Holzkamps die Zusammenhänge zwischen den pädagogischen, politischen, gesellschaftlichen und subjektiven Problemkonstellationen darzustellen, um das Handeln der Beteiligten (be-) greifbar zu machen und Handlungsmöglichkeiten aufzuzeigen. 〈dt.〉

Nach einem Überblick über den Stand der Fachdiskussion zur Frage der Selbsthilfe von Zuwanderern werden Typen und Zielsetzungen der Vereine charakterisiert, deren Orientierung auf Herkunfts- und Aufenthaltsland, die Kapazitäten zur Mobilisierung und Akkulturierung der Migranten, die Unterschiede in der Organisationsentwicklung zwischen den einzelnen Gruppen und die Beteiligung von Frauen und Männern. Fallstudien zeigen, wie und inwieweit türkisch-alevitische, spanische, italienische und vietnamesische Vereine in ihren Gruppen soziales Kapitel schaffen. An den Beispielen Nordrhein-Westfalens, der neuen Bundesländer und der Städte München und Münster werden öffentliche Unterstützungs- und Förderungskonzepte vorgestellt. Anhand der Daten des Bundeszentralregisters wird zum ersten Mal ein quantitativer und qualitativer Gesamtüberblick über alle Zuwanderervereine gegeben
    Description / Table of Contents: Long description: Zuwanderer in Deutschland haben ein reiches Vereinsleben und damit ein wesentliches Element unserer pluralistischen Gesellschaft geschaffen.
