    Kurzfassung: Networks provide the foundation for the functioning of our societies and economies. Their study has had a long tradition in such fields as engineering, operations research, management science and computer science. More recently, the disciplines of finance and economics have come to be rich and fascinating sources of network-based problems and applications. This focused and refereed volume of contributions from leading international scholars provides a wealth of innovations in the study of financial and economic networks. The volume presents entirely new results: the conceptualization of the stock market as a graph, the evolution of financial systems as networks, the incorporation of electronic transactions in international finance (from a network perspective), new formalisms for the study of supply chains (as fluid models and in an network economic framework) and new applications of agent-based computational economics trade networks with intermediaries and worker-employer networks. Finally, trade networks in web-based caching are introduced.     Kurzfassung: For much of the twentieth century, mainstream economists have treated human agents in their models as if they were rational beings of unbounded computational capacity - the notorious 'Homo Economicus' of much economic theory. However, the patent inadequacies of this understanding of human nature have become increasingly apparent, and economists have begun looking for more realistic models, incorporating the insights of evolutionary theory. The authors address the question of human nature in economics, examining not only some of the recent writing on this subject in evolutionary psychology and related disciplines, but also the ideas of important thinkers in the Western intellectual tradition. Beginning with the ancient Greeks and progressing to the modern day, the contributors explore the works of such thinkers as Augustine, Adam Smith, Thomas Malthus, Alfred Marshall and Kenneth Boulding. Many of these works are placed in a Darwinian, evolutionary perspective, with the imperative that the study of human nature must be consistent with our understanding of human evolution, and should consider how human beings are moulded by cultural and institutional influences. Naturally, Darwin's own view of human nature is also explored, undermining the mistaken notion that Darwinism promotes human nature as greedy, uncooperative and self-seeking. This enlightening, original and highly readable work will be of great interest to professional economists and students, researchers and teachers of evolutionary economics

    Kurzfassung: This book addresses the role of cooperation, networks and institutions in the context of regional innovation systems. It emphasises the importance of these factors in the emergence of local innovation systems, using detailed examples of clusters which have reached different stages of maturity. The authors address the topic from an empirical, theoretical and political perspective, and highlight the local mechanisms which are involved in the development of innovation systems. They offer a comprehensive overview of different approaches in the field and present numerous case studies which stress the influence of networks and local institutions. Significantly, they also introduce several new approaches to regional innovation systems, including contributions which explicitly discuss the design and potential of policy measures to promote regional development. The policy recommendations are based on sound theorising which, in turn, is based on extensive empirical research. This book is a valuable addition to a complex and growing literature which offers new perspectives and insights on cooperation, networks and institutions, and their role in the development of local systems of innovation.     Kurzfassung: During the past twenty years there has been an explosive growth in research into environmental issues from a social science perspective.     Kurzfassung: The Economics of Knowledge Sharing claims that useful economic knowledge is the most important foundation for the development of a sufficiently strong process of innovation.     Kurzfassung: This important book analyses evolutionary approaches to economic policy. Its main purpose is to explore the policy implications of evolutionary economics, in particular of approaches inspired on the one hand by Schumpeter and revived by Nelson and Winter which deal with industrial evolution under constant institutions and, on the other hand, of approaches inspired by Hayek and North, which analyse the ways in which institutions themselves evolve. Hitherto evolutionary economists have paid little attention to policy issues, and the relatively few policy implications that they have produced are divergent. Whereas the Neo-Schumpeterian approach has often been used to support political interventions, the Hayekian viewpoint holds that economic policy detracts from economic performance. More systematic evolutionary analysis of economic policy is required if these one-sided findings are to be transcended. Furthermore, such analysis can be expected to develop a coherent theory of economic policy which will plug the gaps and rectify the errors (such as approval of socialist planning and Japanese industrial policies) of both neoclassical and alternative approaches to policy. Evolutionary economists and policy analysts will find this book of great interest, as will economists and students of economics who are interested in enlarging their views with excursions outside the standard curriculum

    Kurzfassung: The contributors to this book, from the US and Japan, explore the main issues involved in the international trade, foreign direct investment, and macro/financial relations of the United States and Japan and provide guidance to policymakers for measures to help overcome Japan's economic stagnation since the early 1990s. The book is divided into three parts. Part I contains an empirical analysis of trade diversion under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), a theoretical analysis of time in determining the structure and effects of trade with an application to Japan, and an empirical analysis of Japan's changing import behavior. Part II is focused on foreign direct investment (FDI), trade, and the behavior and structure of Japanese firms. Part III deals with macro/financial issues of current interest and importance in Japan. The analytical focus of the chapters is intended to enhance the understanding of the issues addressed and to provide some guidance to policymakers in the design of measures that will improve economic efficiency and welfare and help to overcome the economic stagnation that Japan has experienced in the past decade or more.     Kurzfassung: Taking an interdisciplinary approach, this volume focuses on the trust processes between people within organizations, with an emphasis on empirical studies. Rational foundations and psychological motivations for trust are taken into account through conceptual and empirical chapters. The authors begin by summarizing a number of key elements from the literature including how trust develops in time, and how its development is affected by social-psychological phenomena. This includes the notion of "framing": the interpretive context in which actions are perceived and evaluated. A conceptual framework is then used to analyse trust and power in the internal relationships of the organization. The contributors take up this issue in an evolutionary analysis of competition between trust and cheating.

    Kurzfassung: Grenzregionen und grenzüberschreitende Zusammenarbeit gelten in der jüngeren Regionalforschung häufig als Symbole einer neuen Qualität innerhalb der zwischenstaatlichen Beziehungen und als Ausdruck guter Nachbarschaft zwischen den Staaten. Zudem werden sie als Beweis für eine zunehmende Regionalisierung politischer Entscheidungsprozesse und eine Transnationalisierung der internationalen Beziehungen angeführt. Damit wird ihnen politische Bedeutung jenseits des grenzregionalen Bezugs zugesprochen. Solche Überlegungen ignorieren jedoch bestehende Abhängigkeitsverhältnisse sowie Entwicklungen, die das Image von Grenzregionen als Defizitgebiete und Problembereiche verstärken. Zudem wird die Gestaltung von Staatsgrenzen weiterhin durch klassische Sicherheitsfragen beeinflusst und durch traditionelle Träger der Außenbeziehungen bestimmt. Hinzu kommen neue grenzüberschreitende Fragestellungen aufgrund komplexer Interdependenzen, die sowohl grenzregionale, nationale wie auch supranationale oder internationale Bedeutung haben. Das Untersuchungsdesign dieser Arbeit wurde in diesem Sinne ausgeweitet, um folgend Fragen zu analysieren: Inwieweit dezentrale Grenzkoalitionäre langfristig in die Gestaltung der zwischenstaatlichen Beziehungen einbezogen werden; ob sie selbstständig aktiv werden können, welchen Einfluss sie auf eine zunehmend integrativ gestaltete Außenpolitik haben, welche Politikfelder dabei im Vordergrund stehen. Ausgangspunkt der Analyse sind unabhängige Variablen, die jenseits der lokalen und regionalen Bedürfnisse und Ansprüche die Rahmenbedingungen grenzüberschreitender langfristiger Vernetzungen ergeben. Dazu gehören die Qualität der zwischenstaatlichen Beziehungen, nationale und transkontinentale Integrationskonzepte, die sozio-kulturelle Ausgangssituation in der Grenzregion sowie der politische Wille, langfristig binationale Mehrebenennetzwerke zu etablieren. Als Fallbeispiele dienen die deutsch-polnische sowie die US-mexikanische Grenzregion. Ziel ist es, den tatsächlichen Radius der grenzregionalen Spielräume jenseits lokaler und regionaler Fragestellungen zu definieren. Untersucht wird dies anhand zweier Themenkomplexe die traditionell in nationalstaatliche Kompetenz fallende Sicherheitspolitik und die der Regionalpolitik zuzuordnenden Felder Infrastruktur, regionale Wirtschafts- sowie Umweltpolitik. Besonderes Augenmerk wird auf die zwischen Europa und Nordamerika stark unterschiedlichen Integrationsanstöße und Entwicklungslogiken gelegt.
    Kurzfassung: New studies on regionalism often regard border regions and cross-border cooperation as symbols of a new quality within international relations. Since this is seen as proof of the growing decentralization of political decision-making processes and the transnationalization of foreign relations, increasing political clout is being attributed to transboundary interaction. However, such research approaches tend to ignore existing dependencies and developments which strengthen the negative image of border regions as conflict-prone and problematic. At the same time, the handling of border policies continues to be dominated by classical security-related concerns and is still decided by traditional diplomatic stake-holders. Furthermore, new border-related questions surface, based on complex interdependencies between regional and national levels as well as in the supranational and international realms. In response, this study expands the general research parameters to determine the following questions: if and how decentralized border coalitions act within the range of binational relations; whether or not they can intervene independently; what influence they have on increasingly integrated foreign policies; and in which political arenas cooperation is most likely. Independent variables beyond the local and regional level are used as points of reference regarding lasting cross-border networks. These include the state of bilateral relations, national and transcontinental integration concepts, socio-cultural conditions, and the degree of political drive towards establishing binational multileveled networks. The German-Polish and the U.S.-Mexican border regions serve as case studies. The goal is to define the political playing field, and to outline the depth and limitations of border-regional coalitions beyond local and regional demands. Two unique policy-fields are analyzed security issues which are traditionally handled by state actors on the one hand, and infrastructure, regional development, and environmental issues on the other. Special attention is given to the different strategies of European and Northamerican integration initiatives and developments.

    Kurzfassung: One of the questions in the context of EU-Enlargement is that of East-West Migration. How many people will leave the accession candidate countries and how will this affect the Western European countries? This paper presents a forecast of migration between the accession countries and the EU 15 from 2004 to 2015. The forecast is based on the analysis of migration experiences from the accession of Spain, Greece and Portugal. The results of a multiple regression model show that network effects play an important role. Economic factors have a significant impact only on migration into the European countries but not on emigration. The estimated coefficients are used to forecast future migration. Between 2004 and 2015 about 3.0 million people are expected to migrate temporarily into Western European countries. Permanent migration will be about 1.7 million people. Regarding distribution Germany and Austria are mostly affected by immigration. In terms of emigration quotas Poland will be by far the main source of migrants.

    Kurzfassung: This history of the poor of Sub-Saharan Africa begins in the monasteries of thirteenth-century Ethiopia and ends in the South African resettlement sites of the 1980s. Its thesis, derived from histories of poverty in Europe, is that most very poor Africans have been individuals incapacitated for labour, bereft of support, and unable to fend for themselves in a land-rich economy. There has emerged the distinct poverty of those excluded from access to productive resources. Natural disaster brought widespread destitution, but as a cause of mass mortality it was almost eliminated in the colonial era, to return to those areas where drought has been compounded by administrative breakdown. Professor Iliffe investigates what it was like to be poor, how the poor sought to help themselves, how their counterparts in other continents live. The poor live as people, rather than merely parading as statistics. Famines have alerted the world to African poverty, but the problem itself is ancient. Its prevailing forms will not be understood until those of earlier periods are revealed and trends of change are identified. This is a book for all concerned with the future of Africa, as well as for students of poverty elsewhere.

    Anmerkung: Das Thema "Kultur" hat seit dem sogenannten "cultural turn" in den Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften eine enorme Konjunktur erfahren. Die damit verbundene These einer paradigmatischen Wende auch der Soziologie ist wenig überzeugend. Am Beispiel der Entwicklung von Vornamen über 100 Jahre wird gezeigt, dass man sehr gut mit dem klassischen Instrumentarium der Soziologie und dessen wissenschaftstheoretischer Begründung arbeiten kann, um Erkenntnisse über die Kulturentwicklung einer Gesellschaft zu produzieren. Am Beispiel der Vergabe von Vornamen lassen sich kulturelle Modernisierungsprozesse empirisch beschreiben und strukturell erklären: Die traditionellen Ligaturen Familie, Religion und Bindung an die Nation verlieren im Zeitverlauf in der Strukturierung der Vergabe von Vornamen an Bedeutung, Prozesse der Individualisierung und der Globalisierung gewinnen hingegen an Relevanz. Dabei lassen sich schicht- und geschlechtsspezifische Unterschiede beobachten. Die hier vorgelegte Studie versteht sich einerseits als eine empirische Analyse kultureller Modernisierungsprozesse am Beispiel von Vornamen, sie versteht sich andererseits als eine exemplarische Einführung in die Kultursoziologie. Am Beispiel der Analyse von Vornamen werden die Möglichkeiten eines spezifischen Verständnisses von Kultursoziologie erläutert. Karen Joisten wendet sich diesem Problemkreis zu, indem sie das Konzept entwirft, der Mensch zeichne sich durch eine Doppelstruktur aus, die sprachlich in der Wendung Heim-weg zum Ausdruck gebracht wird. Während der Bestandteil Heim- auf die heimische Seite des Menschen verweist, die es ihm ermöglicht, Bindungen einzugehen und in sich zu wohnen, verweist der Bestandteil –weg auf die weghafte Seite des Menschen, die dazu führt, daß er permanent unterwegs sein muß, also bei keiner eingenommenen Haltung und Einsicht stehenbleiben kann. Im ersten Teil des Buches werden unterschiedliche Weisen des In-Beziehung-Seins des Menschen zum Raum, zur Zeit und zum Mitmenschen analysiert, sowohl in bezug auf seine heimhafte als auch auf seine weghafte Seite. Im Mittelpunkt der Untersuchung stehen dabei die Grundphänomene Geborgenheit, Ruhe und Vertrauen. Zugleich werden vier Hauptwege, auf und in denen sich der Mensch primär bewegt und ausrichtet, gekennzeichnet: das Wandern in der Natur, das Gehen auf der Straße, das Fahren auf der Straße und das Surfen im Netz. Im zweiten Teil des Bandes setzt sich die Autorin mit grundlegenden philosophiehistorischen Antworten auf die Frage auseinander, was unter Heimat zu verstehen ist, bezieht sie auf die Deutung des Menschen und macht sie fruchtbar für die moderne Diskussion

    Kurzfassung: Main description: Die Außenpolitik der DDR ist bis heute weitgehend eine "terra incognita". Joachim Scholtyseck betritt mit seinem Lehrbuch also Neuland: Er führt systematisch in die Außenpolitik des "zweiten deutschen Staates" ein und diskutiert außerdem die Interpretationen und Kontroversen der Forschung. In einer einzigartigen politischen Konstruktion musste die DDR einerseits Außenpolitik auch als Deutschlandpolitik betreiben. Andererseits blieb sie bis zu ihrem Untergang ein von der UdSSR abhängiges Gebilde. Wie alle Akteure war die DDR in die Bedingungen der internationalen Politik in den Zeiten des Kalten Krieges, der Détente und schließlich des "Zweiten Kalten Krieges" eingebettet. Ihre Außenbeziehungen stellten zudem einen Sonderfall dar, weil eine Außenpolitik unter marxistischen Vorzeichen einen radikalen Bruch mit bisherigen Traditionen der deutschen Geschichte bedeutete. Joachim Scholtyseck, geboren 1958, ist Professor für Neuere und Neueste Geschichte an der Universität Bonn

    Kurzfassung: Contingent Employment in Europe and the United States examines the developments in labour markets in advanced economies in the 21st century, as regards contingent employment. This is defined as employment relationships that can be terminated with minimal costs within a predetermined period of time. This includes fixed-term contracts, temporary agency work and self-employment. Contingent employment has been the subject of much legislative activity in the last decade, at both the national and European level.     Kurzfassung: The distinguished authors in this volume address the fundamental causes for such heterogeneous international experiences, placing particular emphasis on the role of institutions. They demonstrate how the study of economic development is increasingly linked to the development of institutions, which allow for more complex exchanges to occur in markets and societies. Institutions can be understood as rules or constraints that channel individuals' actions in specific directions, and can be formal or informal depending on their genesis. The book highlights the connection between institutions and economic welfare by examining countries at different stages of development. Although the authors' study material effects, they also look at individual well-being which is more strongly influenced by the non-material products of institutions such as opportunity, freedom and relationships. They move on to highlight the role of institutions in global business, in terms of innovation, entrepreneurship and foreign direct investment. In the concluding chapters they focus on the actual process of transition from one institutional framework to another. Amongst other examples, they examine reforms to international financial institutions and constitutional adjustments in transition countries

    Kurzfassung: The authors address the question of infrastructure reforms in a novel way by focusing on the impact which they can have on consumers through the prices paid by different groups and on their access to the networks. They analyse original material from four Latin American countries - Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Peru - and two European countries - Spain and the UK. Access is especially relevant when considering immature systems which have not yet extended to cover the majority of the population, as is the case in many Latin American countries. The authors also address the widespread impact of privatization on the economy (via macroeconomic influences) and the more general issues of subsidies and regulation which are endemic to these industries. The book focuses on the reform of four sectors: telecommunications, electricity, gas, and water and sanitation

    Kurzfassung: This book presents a critical analysis of the role of international institutions and their performance in terms of justification, effectiveness and efficiency. The authors begin by discussing the controversies surrounding the Tobin Tax in the context of global governance. They move on to address important global issues where international institutions play a significant role. These include trade and FDI in relation to the WTO, and the reconciliation of order and justice in the international trading system. Further chapters investigate development issues and international institutions, most of which were not designed for the specific needs of developing countries. They assess whether international institutions can actually help to mitigate the tendency of uneven development in the global economy. Finally, the focus switches to the analysis and evaluation of one specific institution and its actions, namely, the Bank for International Settlements (BIS)

    Kurzfassung: What are the future prospects of the modern family? For a long time the common image in the West has been to see the nuclear family, consisting of two economically independent spouses and their children, as the natural outcome of the modernization process. As the hierarchies of patriarchal society vanish, a social order based on equal and autonomous individuals all set for self-realisation has been assumed. However, high rates of divorce, often reported domestic violence, teenagers left on their own at an early age, do not harmonize very well with this idealized image. Critical analysis of family order in two countries at the opposite edges of the European continent - Turkey and Sweden - approaches these problems and attempts to create a more realistic picture of family life in the modern world.
