Diese Form von Interdisziplinarität ermöglicht es, eine Heimat zu erkennen und zu beschreiben. Über Landschaften, Heimaten und deren Pflanzen hat Hansjörg Küster in den letzten Jahrzehnten immer wieder publiziert, für Zeitungen und Zeitschriften, wissenschaftliche Veröffentlichungen, Überblicksdarstellungen und Handbücher. Oft stehen Landschaften im Mittelpunkt, die man als Heimaten verstehen kann und in denen man Menschen aus Nah und Fern integrieren kann - wenn man nur darüber spricht. Die Beiträge dieses Buches geben dafür vielerlei Anregungen.

    Abstract: In der wilhelminischen Ära des Deutschen Kaiserreichs vollzog sich im Kontext der konflikthaften Entwicklungen der »orientalischen Frage« und insbesondere der zunehmenden Entfremdung in den deutsch-englischen Beziehungen die Konstituierung des Bedeutungsraums »Orient«. In diesem Prozess spielte der Bankierssohn und Orientalist Max Freiherr von Oppenheim, der von 1896 an für dreizehn Jahre als Beobachter der islamischen Welt kommissarisch am deutschen Generalkonsulat in Kairo tätig war und später im Ersten Weltkrieg mit der Schaffung und Leitung einer »Nachrichtenstelle für den Orient« betraut wurde, eine zentrale Rolle. An ihm lässt sich idealtypisch zeigen, wie sich der »Orient« allmählich zu einem Idiom entwickelte, das für nahezu alle zeitgenössischen außenpolitischen Probleme, Ziele und Herausforderungen des Deutschen Reichs Antworten und Optionen bereithielt.

    Abstract: Das „Ebene Kilikien“ ist eine von Mittelmeer und Gebirgen umrandete Kulturlandschaft im Süden der Türkei. Während sich die Siedlungsschwerpunkte in den vergangenen Jahrtausenden nur marginal verändert haben, hat sich das Landschaftsbild umso mehr gewandelt: In der Bronze- und Eisenzeit dominierten Siedlungshügel und in römischer und frühbyzantinischer Zeit zahlreiche Flachsiedlungen die heute intensiv landwirtschaftlich genutzte Region. Diese war während des Mittelalters weniger dicht besiedelt und weite Teile wurden von nomadischen Gruppierungen als Winterweidegebiet genutzt. Heute prägen wenige Großstädte, dörfliche Ansiedlungen, Ackerflächen, Plantagen und zahlreiche Bewässerungskanäle das Landschaftsbild. Susanne Rutishauser stellt die Kultur- und Landschaftsgeschichte des Ebenen Kilikien aus einer archäologischen Perspektive dar. Dafür werden die vorliegenden Informationen aus Ausgrabungen, Surveys und Textarchiven sowie die Auswertung von Fernerkundungsdaten zusammengeführt. Es zeigt sich u.a., dass die Lage spätbronzezeitlicher Fundplätze sowie Landschaftselemente auf historischen Satellitenbilddaten eine Bewässerung bereits während der Spätbronze- und Eisenzeit vermuten lassen

    Abstract: 'Aloha' is at once the most significant and the most misunderstood word in the indigenous Hawaiian lexicon. For Kanaka Maoli people, the concept of 'aloha' is a representation and articulation of their identity, despite its misappropriation and commandeering by non-native audiences in the form of things like the 'hula girl' of popular culture. Considering the way aloha is embodied, performed, and interpreted in native Hawaiian literature, music, plays, dance, drag performance, and even ghost tours from the twentieth century to the present, Stephanie Nohelani Teves shows that misunderstanding of the concept by non-native audiences has not prevented the Kanaka Maoli from using it to create and empower community and articulate its distinct Indigenous meaning.

    Abstract: Grace after Genocide is the first comprehensive ethnography of Cambodian refugees, charting their struggle to transition from life in agrarian Cambodia to survival in post-industrial America, while maintaining their identities as Cambodians. The ethnography contrasts the lives of refugees who arrived in America after 1975, with their focus on Khmer traditions, values, and relations, with those of their children who, as descendants of the Khmer Rouge catastrophe, have struggled to become Americans in a society that defines them as different. The ethnography explores America's mid-twentieth-century involvement in Southeast Asia and its enormous consequences on multiple generations of Khmer refugees.

The experience of South Asian Americans, one of the fastest-growing immigrant - one in which distinctions within a group play a significant role. Focusing on Indian, Pakistani, and Bangladeshi American communities, Sangay K. Mishra analyzes features such as class, religion, nation of origin, language, caste, gender, and sexuality in mobilization. He shows how these internal characteristics lead to multiple paths of political inclusion, defying a unified group experience. How, for instance, has religion shaped the fractured political response to intensified discrimination against South Asians - Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs - in the post-9/11 period?

    Abstract: 25 years after the fall of the wall and ten years after the eastward expansion of the EU - these politically significant events have also fundamentally altered historical research on Eastern Europe. The extent to which the contributors to this volume have benefitted as a result of the establishment of historical cultural studies, the opening of previously sealed archives and more importantly, from a hitherto unknown freedom of movement, is shown in their urban histories: based on cultural-historical interrogations into »museification« and monumentalization, on representativeness or multiculturalism in the Eastern European urban sphere, they offer insights into the history of metropolises like Prague, Baku, Moscow or St Petersburg, and regional centers like Lviv or Irkutsk

    Abstract: "By 2013, many people worldwide had heard about Timbuktu as a center of learning where thousands of Arabic manuscripts are preserved, some of which were destroyed by fanatics during the French counteroffensive to halt the expansion of Islamists in Mali. But few people know that Timbuktu was only one of many centers of Islamic learning in precolonial West Africa. This book analyses the rise and transformation of Arabo-Islamic erudition in West Africa from the beginning of the spread of Islam through the colonial period to the twenty-first century. It highlights the contribution of Muslim scholars in the production and transmission of knowledge and in shaping state and society in West Africa. It argues that no study of the history of education or knowledge production in West Africa will be complete unless it pays attention to this intellectual tradition. The book further shows how European colonialism obstructs historiography so that we know so little about it. Finally, the book analyze the transformation of West African educational system, in the twentieth and twenty first century and shows that far from declining, the Islamic tradition of West Africa has gained vitality in the postcolonial period."--

    Abstract: Am Anfang war Tacitus: Der römische Historiker schildert in seiner ›Germa­nia‹ die Gebiete östlich des Rheins wenig vorteilhaft als »durch Wälder grauenerre­gend«. Seine ›Annalen‹ berichten über eine Schlacht im »Teutoburger Wald« zwischen Römern und Germanen, deren Anführer Hermann der Cherusker zum »Be­freier Germaniens« geworden sei. Als dann im Zuge der Befreiungskriege um 1800 Anfänge eines deutschen Nationalbewusstseins entstehen, besinnen sich Dichter und Denker genau auf diesen anti-urbanen, naturnahen Waldmythos. Der Wald als unverbildete Natur wird zum deutschen Ideal – im Gegensatz zur verbildeten, städtischen Zivilisation Frankreichs. Dieser konstitutive Gegensatz bleibt prägend – bis hin zum Nationalsozialismus. Zechner widmet diesem Urtopos der Deutschen eine eindrucksvolle Studie und zeichnet dessen Ausprägungen von der Romantik bis zum Nationalsozialismus nach. Eine große Ideengeschichte, die erstmals das Identitätskonzept des deutschen »Waldvolkes« kritisch rekonstruiert.

    Abstract: Borderlands migration has been the subject of considerable study, but the authorship has usually reflected a north-of-the-border perspective only. Gathering a transnational group of prominent researchers, including leading Mexican scholars whose work is not readily available in the United States and academics from US universities, Mexican Migration to the United States brings together an array of often-overlooked viewpoints, reflecting the interconnectedness of immigration policy. This collection’s research, principally empirical, reveals significant aspects of labor markets, family life, and educational processes. Presenting recent data and accessible explanations of complex histories, the essays capture the evolving legal frameworks and economic implications of Mexico-US migrations at the national and municipal levels, as well as the experiences of receiving communities in the United States. The volume includes illuminating reports on populations ranging from undocumented young adults to elite Mexican women immigrants, health-care rights, Mexico’s incorporation of return migration, the impact of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals on higher education, and the experiences of young children returning to Mexican schools after living in the United States.     Abstract: This book examines the deliberate and unintended spatial consequences of feminism's second wave, a social movement dedicated to reconfiguring power relations between women and men. Placing the women's movement of the 1970s in the context of other social movements that have changed the use of urban space, this book argues that reform feminists used the legal system to end the mandatory segregation of women and men in public institutions, while radical activists created small-scale places that gave women the confidence to claim their rights to the public sphere.

Geburtstags des Wiener Praters begibt sich Roland Girtler auf einen Streifzug durch die bunte Welt des Wurstelpraters, diesem in seiner Art weltweit wohl einmaligen Vergnügungspark. Der Wurstelprater ist reich an Geschichte und Geschichten: Bereits kurz nach der Öffnung des ehemaligen kaiserlichen Jagdgebiets für die Bevölkerung im Jahre 1766, begannen sich Kaffeesieder und Wirte am Rande des weitläufigen Areals zu etablieren. Zahlreiche Vergnügungen folgten und lockten die Stadtbewohner an. Kinder erfreuten sich an den Puppenspielen, deren Hauptfigur der lustige Hanswurst war, der schließlich zum Namensgeber dieses Teils des Praters wurde. Roland Girtler nimmt seine Leser mit in den Kosmos der Praterfamilien der "Schaafs", der "Langs" oder der "Kobelkoffs", und führt sie zu den Schaustellern und Artisten, den Seiltänzern, Messerwerfern und Leierkastenleuten. Seine Gespräche mit Persönlichkeiten wie dem Präsidenten des Praterverbandes, dem Osttiroler Dachdecker, der die höchsten Karusselle baut oder dem Praterheinzi, einem klassischen "Hutschenschleuderer“, geben einen faszinierenden Einblick in diese bunte Welt zwischen Schießbuden und Grottenbahn. Seine Alltagsbeobachtungen ergänzt Girtler auf bekannt unterhaltsame Art um historische Quellen zum Wiener Wurstelprater und eröffnet so einen einzigartigen Blick auf diesen schillernden Ort und seine Menschen.

    Abstract: In this book, David Bello offers a new and radical interpretation of how China's last dynasty, the Qing (1644–1911), relied on the interrelationship between ecology and ethnicity to incorporate the country's far-flung borderlands into the dynasty's expanding empire. The dynasty tried to manage the sustainable survival and compatibility of discrete borderland ethnic regimes in Manchuria, Inner Mongolia, and Yunnan within a corporatist 'Han Chinese' imperial political order. This unprecedented imperial unification resulted in the great human and ecological diversity that exists today. Using natural science literature in conjunction with under-utilized and new sources in the Manchu language, Bello demonstrates how Qing expansion and consolidation of empire was dependent on a precise and intense manipulation of regional environmental relationships

    Abstract: The design and deciphering of the urban take place at multiple levels of social configurations and artistic perceptions simultaneously. The city has thus served as way of life, projection, image, and imaginary habitat, which has shaped one of the key programmatic themes in literature, painting, film, and music since the 19th and 20 centuries.Expressly musical interpretations are central to this volume.     Abstract: Mainstream historical accounts of the development of capitalism describe a process which is fundamentally European - a system that was born in the mills and factories of England or under the guillotines of the French Revolution. In this groundbreaking book, a very different story is told. How the West Came to Rule offers a unique interdisciplinary and international historical account of the origins of capitalism. It argues that contrary to the dominant wisdom, capitalism's origins should not be understood as a development confined to the geographically and culturally sealed borders of Europe, but the outcome of a wider array of global processes in which non-European societies played a decisive role. Through an outline of the uneven histories of Mongolian expansion, New World discoveries, Ottoman-Habsburg rivalry, the development of the Asian colonies and bourgeois revolutions, Alexander Anievas and Kerem Nisancioglu provide an account of how these diverse events and processes came together to produce capitalism
