Aus machtkritischer Perspektive beleuchtet sie die Rolle traditioneller Autoritäten, die zentrale Akteur*innen in diesen Konflikten sind. Ihre Analyse entschlüsselt die Bedeutung unterschiedlicher Machtformen für Konfliktentstehung und -verlauf und zeigt soziale Ungleichheitsverhältnisse im Kontext von land grabbing auf

    Abstract: Care work is a vital foundation of society. Without the many people who look after children every day, care for relatives in need of support or help people in crisis, this society would collapse immediately. At the same time, those who take on this work are equally overstretched as the ecosystems and their material cycles on which all life is based. These problems are ultimately not solvable in a capitalist social order. Therefore, we need to radically limit profit-oriented economic activity in favour of a care economy that is oriented towards successful care relationships and the resilience of ecosystems. The concept of the Care Revolution opens the way to a society characterised by care and solidarity instead of competition and exclusion.
    Abstract: Nicht zuletzt die Corona-Pandemie hat überdeutlich gezeigt, dass Sorgearbeit ein lebensnotwendiges Fundament der Gesellschaft ist. Ebenso notwendig ist die Bewahrung eines Klimas, das menschliches Leben ermöglicht. Daher zielt die umfassende Transformationsstrategie der Care Revolution darauf ab, eine solidarische und zugleich nachhaltige Care-Ökonomie aufzubauen, in der sich die Rahmenbedingungen für Care-Beschäftigte und familiär Sorgearbeitende deutlich verbessern.Die Konzentration auf Sorge und Solidarität als zentrale Gestaltungsprinzipien des gesellschaftlichen Handelns ermöglichen aber auch in anderen ökonomischen Bereichen eine Umgestaltung unter Achtung der ökologischen Grenzen.

    Abstract: Biographical note: Steven Engler (Dr.), geb. 1985, ist promovierter Geograph und Projektleiter der Arbeitsgruppe »Gesellschaft und Nachhaltigkeit im Wandel« am Geographischen Institut der Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) und des Virtuellen Instituts »Transformation - Energiewende NRW«. Er hat Geographie studiert und anschließend als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Institut für Landes- und Stadtentwicklungsforschung (ILS) und am Institut für Entwicklungsforschung und Entwicklungspolitik (IEE) gearbeitet. Am Kulturwissenschaftlichen Institut Essen (KWI) war er Co-Leiter des Forschungsbereichs »Partizipationskultur«. Seine Promotion hat er an der Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen über den Themenkomplex der Nahrungsmittelunsicherheit und Klimaextremen abgeschlossen. Julia Janik, geb. 1993, studiert Wirtschaft und Politik Ostasiens mit Schwerpunkt Politik und Chinesisch an der Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) und ist dort Mitarbeiterin am Geographischen Institut in der Arbeitsgruppe »Gesellschaft und Nachhaltigkeit im Wandel«.     Abstract: The global phenomenon of political consumerism is known through such diverse manifestations as corporate boycotts, increased preferences for organic and fair-trade products, and lifestyle choices such as veganism. It has also become an area of increasing research across a variety of disciplines. Political consumerism usesconsumer power to change institutional or market practices that are found ethically, environmentally, or politically objectionable. Through such actions, the goods offered on the consumer market are problematized and politicized. Distinctions between consumers and citizens and between the economy and politics collapse. The Oxford Handbook of Political Consumerism offers the first comprehensive theoretical and comparative overview of the ways in which the market becomes a political arena. It maps the four major forms of political consumerism: boycotting, buycotting (spending to show support), lifestyle politics, and discursive actions, such as culture jamming. Chapters by leading scholars examine political consumerism in different locations and industry sectors, and in consideration of environmental and human rights problems, political events, and the ethics of production and manufacturing practices. This volume offers a thorough exploration of the phenomenon and its myriad dilemmas, involving religion, race, nationalism, gender relations, animals, and our common future. Moreover, the Handbook takes stock of political consumerism's effectiveness in solving complex global problems and its use to both promote and impede democracy.

    Abstract: "This is a study into how the public discourse on migrant integration in the UK changed from 2000-2010. The book shows that the discursive construction of integration in the British public sphere shifted from one of cultural pluralism to one of neo-assimilation, informed by a wider spread of neo-liberalism that necessitates self-sufficiency and discourages state assistance. Situated within the Critical Discourse Studies tradition, the book employs a Discourse Historical approach to the data and includes innovative analysis combining 'top-down' (policy documents and media texts) and 'bottom-up' (focus groups with migrants and new citizens) sites of discourse production. In doing so, it provides a broad and detailed perspective of public discourse on integration in the UK. The book shows that understandings of 'integration' are diachronically and synchronically fluid and as such, the term plays an important role as a 'consensus concept' that different actors can support whilst construing it in different ways. Analysis of the data further reveals that integration is interdiscursively linked to other social fields, such as the economy, terrorism and public spending. The book also argues that integration policy has become directed not just at new migrants, but also long-term British citizens and that this has the potential to have considerable impact on community cohesion."--Bloomsbury Publishing

    Abstract: 〈p〉Das private Auto war für lange Zeit das Sehnsuchtsobjekt und Symbol eines glücklichen Lebens. Es war eine kollektive Liebe der Mittelschicht und derjenigen, die dort hinstrebten. Doch diese affektive Bindung verliert vor allem in der Stadt zunehmend an Kraft. Wenigstens dort ist bereits klar geworden: Die 〈i〉Grenzen des fossilen Automobilismus〈/i〉 sind erreicht. Es gibt einfach zu viele Autos.〈br /〉Die Verkehrswende ist nun auf der Agenda. Zukunftsfähig sind nur solche Verkehrsangebote, die auch unter Ressourcenknappheit individualisierbar bleiben. Autos nutzen statt besitzen wird - in Verbindung mit digitalen Plattformen - attraktiv, das Radfahren gewinnt gerade in den Städten an Popularität. Mobilitätsdienstleistungen kommen aus der Nische und können dank Echtzeitinformationen flexibel und zugleich routinemäßig genutzt werden. Der herrschende Rechtsrahmen jedoch privilegiert nach wie vor private Autos. Dagegen deuten die Präferenzen der vorwiegend städtischen Bevölkerung und auch die digitalen Optionen in eine andere Richtung: Die fortschreitende 〈i〉Individualisierung〈/i〉 findet andere Wege als den privaten Besitz von Autos.〈/p〉
    Abstract: 〈p〉The privately owned car was an object of desire and a symbol of a happy life. It was the collective love of the middle class and those who strove to that social level. Yet this affective affection has been dwindling particularly in cities. At least there it has become obvious that the limits 〈i〉of fossile automobilism〈/i〉 have been reached. There are simply too many cars around. Now the transformation of traffic is on the agenda. Only traffic systems that will be able to still individualize when resources become rare are sustainable. Using cars instead of owning them will become attractive in connection with digital platforms; bicycles are becoming more popular, especially in cities. Mobility services are coming out of the wings and can be used flexibly yet routinely thanks to information in real time. Privately owned vehicles, however, are still privileged by the current legal framework. Yet the preferences of the mainly urban population and the available digital options are pointing in another direction: The progressing 〈i〉individualization 〈/i〉finds other means than privately owned cars.〈/p〉

    Abstract: Konstantin Kehl geht der Frage nach, weshalb es trotz Reformbedarfs und langjähriger Debatten bisher nicht gelungen ist, die Versorgungsstrukturen für pflege- und unterstützungsbedürftige Menschen im Sinne einer sozialinvestiven Politik weiterzuentwickeln, die die Vereinbarkeit von Pflege und Beruf verbessert und zivilgesellschaftliche Strukturen fördert. Der Autor fokussiert die Fähigkeiten von Koalitionen öffentlicher und privater Akteure zur Einflussnahme auf kollektiv bindende Entscheidungen in der Verhandlungsdemokratie und untersucht zwei mustergültige Reformen sozialinvestiver Pflegepolitik. Er zeigt, weshalb ökonomisch und im Sinne der Lebensqualität von Menschen vielversprechende Konzepte bisweilen politisch nicht konsequent umgesetzt werden.     Abstract: Drawing on the work of Holocaust writer Primo Levi and political philosopher Giorgio Agamben McClellan introduces a critical turn in our reading of Chaucer. He argues that the unprecedented event of the Holocaust, which witnessed the total degradation and extermination of human beings, irrevocably changes how we read literature from the past. McClellan gives a thoroughgoing reading of the Man of Law’s Tale, widely regarded as one of Chaucer’s most difficult tales, interpreting it as a meditation on the horrors of sovereign power. He shows how Chaucer, through the figuration of Custance, dramatically depicts the destructive effects of power on the human subject. McClellan’s intervention, which he calls “reading-history-as-ethical-meditation,” places reception history in the context of a reception ethics and holds the promise of changing the way we read traditional texts

    Abstract: Making sense of Saudi Arabia is crucially important today. The kingdom's western province contains the heart of Islam, and it is the United States' closest Arab ally and the largest producer of oil in the world. However, the country is undergoing rapid change: its aged leadership is ceding power to a new generation, and its society, dominated by young people, is restive. Saudi Arabia has long remained closed to foreign scholars, with a select few academics allowed into the kingdom over the past decade. This book presents the fruits of their research as well as those of the most prominent Saudi academics in the field. This volume focuses on different sectors of Saudi society and examines how the changes of the past few decades have affected each. It reflects new insights and provides the most up-to-date research on the country's social, cultural, economic and political dynamics.

    Abstract: This book shows how Chinese officials have responded to popular and international pressure, while at the same time seeking to preserve their own careers, in the context of disaster management. Using the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake as a case study, it illustrates how authoritarian regimes are creating new governance mechanisms in response to the changing global environment and what challenges they are confronted with in the process. The book examines both the immediate and long-term effects of a major disaster on China’s policy, institutions, and governing practices, and seeks to explain which factors lead to hasty and poorly conceived reconstruction efforts, which in turn reproduce the very same conditions of vulnerability or expose communities to new risks. In short, it tells a “political” story of how intra-governmental interactions, state-society relations, and international engagement can shape the processes and outcomes of recovery and reconstruction

Politicized motherhood persists, and motherhood continues to inspire women's participation and direct their concerns. In The Political Consequences of Motherhood, Jill S. Greenlee investigates the complex relationship between motherhood and women's political attitudes. Combining a historical overview of the ways motherhood has been used for political purposes with recent political opinion surveys and individual-level analysis, she explains how and when motherhood shapes women's thoughts and preferences. Greenlee argues that two mechanisms account for the durability of motherhood politics. First, women experience attitudinal shifts when they become mothers. Die Beiträge sind nicht didaktisch aufbereitet, aber sorgfältig in verständlichem Stil formuliert und z.T. mit Illustrationen versehen. Das Buch stellt eine gute Ergänzung zum periodisch von bpb und Statistischem Bundesamt herausgegebenen Datenreport (kostenlos bestell- und herunterladbar von der Homepage beider Institutionen) dar, der den gleichen Themenbereich anhand von Statistiken darstellt und interpretiert.     Abstract: This timely book makes a forceful argument that the analyses from behavioral economists are incomplete, the policies advocated by libertarian paternalists are misguided and unethical, and both actually reinforce the cognitive biases and dysfunctions that motivate 'nudges' in the first place. In a lighthearted manner, the author points out critical flaws in the way economists model decision-making, how behavioral economics failed to correct them, and how they led to the problems with libertarian paternalism and nudges. Sprinkled throughout with anecdotes, examples, and references to a wide range of scholarly literature, this new volume argues against the use of paternalistic nudges by the government and makes a positive case for individual choice and autonomy. This book is part of White's triptych on individualism and society, which includes The Illusion of Well-Being and The Decline of the Individual.

    Abstract: This collection of essays, four of which are published in English for the first time, represents the life's work of the historian Tim Mason, one of the most original and perceptive scholars of National Socialism, who pioneered its social and labour history. His provocative articles and essays, written between 1964 and 1990, exhibit a combination of empirical rigour and theoretical astuteness which made them landmarks in the definition and elaboration of major debates in the historiography of National Socialism. These ten essays collect together Mason's most significant writings, including discussions of the domestic origins of the Second World War, the role of Hitler, and the character of working-class resistance, as well as his pathbreaking study of women under National Socialism, and examples of comparative work on fascism and Nazism.     Abstract: The biological sciences are adding value to a host of products and services, producing what some have labelled the “bioeconomy” and offering the potential to make major socio-economic contributions in OECD countries. Using quantitative analyses of data on development pipelines and R&D expenditures from private and public databases, this book estimates biotechnological developments to 2015. Moving to a broader institutional view, it also looks at the roles of R&D funding, human resources, intellectual property, and regulation in the bioeconomy, as well as at possible developments that could influence emerging business models to create scenarios to 2030. These scenarios are included to stimulate reflection on the interplay between policy choices and technological advances in shaping the bioeconomy. Finally, the book explores policy options to support the social, environmental and economic benefits of a bioeconomy.

Two decades after Mikhail Gorbachev initiated regime-wrecking radical reforms, Russia has reemerged as a superpower. It has survived a hyperdepression, modernized, restored private property and business, adopted a liberal democratic persona, and asserted claims to global leadership. Many in the West perceive these developments as proof of a better globalized tomorrow, while others foresee a new cold war. Globalizers contend that Russia is speedily democratizing, marketizing, and humanizing, creating a regime based on the rule of law and respect for civil rights. Opponents counterclaim that Russia before and during the Soviet period was similarly misportrayed and insist that Medvedev's Russia is just another variation of an authoritarian 'Muscovite' model that has prevailed for over five centuries.     Abstract: The current economic situation has obliged the international donor community to reexamine its stance on the conditionality of development assistance. This study evaluates which controversies persist with respect to aid conditionality, how successful donors have been in stemming the rising tide of aid conditionality of the 1980s and 1990s, and whether the donor community practices what it preaches regarding the allocation of aid based on governance and development criteria. Above all, the report considers how the financial crisis has rendered it increasingly difficult to maintain traditional conditionality frameworks. Strategies for reducing the number of aid conditionalities and for enhancing recipient ownership of aid policies are proposed in light of the unsustainability of existing frameworks.--Publisher's description.

    Abstract: Intending Scotland reconsiders our understanding of the development of Scottish culture from the Enlightenment to the present day. The book recovers and reconnects Scottish thinkers from Hume and Reid in the eighteenth century, to Andrew Seth, Norman Kemp Smith and John Macmurray in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It contextualises their work in relation to the development of Scottish anthropology and psychology, from which emerged, in the work of Ian Suttie and R. D. Laing, some of the most significant challenges to Freudian psychology. Craig uses this Scottish tradition to challenge theories of the nation over the last thirty years, providing critiques of Bhabha's 'hybridity' and of Anderson's 'imagined community', and of theories of 'the Other' within a postcolonial framework. Ranging over Scotland's intellectual and cultural history across three centuries, taking in gardens and gardeners as well as historians and historiographers, scientists and engineers as well as philosophers and psychologists, Intending Scotland presents a reinterpretation of Scottish cultural life as radical as the developments in the nation's contemporary politics. Key debates addressed in Intending Scotland include: *Challenges negative conceptions of the Scottish cultural past and of the failures of Scotland's cultural development *Sets Scotland's recent political development in the context of its cultural achievements in the twentieth century *Deals with major figures in Scottish culture - Hume, Reid - and shows how our modern understanding of them is dependent on the work of later Scottish thinkers *Engages with prominent critics in contemporary theory - Anderson, Derrida, Bhabha, Kearney - and develops a critique of them from a Scottish perspective.

    Abstract: Few phenomena have been more disruptive to West European politics and society than the accumulative experience of post-WWII immigration. Against this backdrop spring two questions: Why have the immigrant-receiving states historically permitted high levels of immigration? To what degree can the social and political fallout precipitated by immigration be politically managed? Utilizing evidence from a variety of sources, this study explores the links between immigration and the surge of popular support for anti-immigrant groups; its implications for state sovereignty; its elevation to the policy agenda of the European Union; and its domestic legacies. It argues that post-WWII migration is primarily an interest-driven phenomenon that has historically served the macroeconomic and political interests of the receiving countries. Moreover, it is the role of politics in adjudicating the claims presented by domestic economic actors, foreign policy commitments, and humanitarian norms that creates a permissive environment for significant migration to Western Europe
