    Abstract: Creativity has become part of the language of regeneration experts, urban planners and government policy makers attempting to revive the economic and cultural life of cities in the 21st century. Concepts such as the creative class, the creative industries and bohemian cultural clusters have come to dominate thinking about how creativity can contribute to urban renewal. Spaces of Vernacular Creativity offers a critical perspective on the instrumental use of arts and creative practices for the purposes of urban regeneration or civic boosterism. Several important contributions are brought into one volume to examine the geography of locally embedded forms of arts and creative practice. There has been an explosion of interest in both academic and policy circles in the notion of creativity, and its role in economic development and urban regeneration. This book argues for a rethinking of what constitutes creativity, foregrounding non-economic values and practices, and the often marginal and everyday spaces in which creativity takes shape. Drawing on a range of geographic contexts including the U.S., Europe, Canada and Australia, the book explores a diverse array of creative practices ranging from art, music, and design to community gardening and anticapitalist resistance. The book examines working class, ethnic and non-elite forms of creativity, and a variety of creative spaces, including rural areas, suburbs and abandoned areas of the city. The authors argue for a broader and more inclusive conception of what constitutes creative practice, advocating for an approach that foregrounds economies of generosity, conviviality and activism. The book also explores the complexities and nuances that connect the local and the global and finally, the book provides a space for valuing alternative, marginal and displaced knowledges.     Abstract: Das Buch thematisiert unter dem Leitbegriff der Regenerierung Erneuerungsprozesse in schrumpfenden Städten. Behandelt werden lokale Strategien der Regenerierung in Ostdeutschland, welche auf die Zuwanderung neuer Bewohner, die Schaffung neuer Arbeitsplätze und die städtebauliche Erneuerung zielen. Auf der Grundlage der Konzepte strategischer Planung, Entwicklungspfade sowie Multilevel Governance wird in empirischen Fallstudien der Frage nachgegangen, inwieweit politisch-planerische Strategien in Städten Leitbilder und Projekte miteinander verknüpfen, welche Pfadabhängigkeiten sie aufweisen und wie lokale Strategien durch übergeordnete staatliche Ebenen beeinflusst werden.

    Abstract: The main challenges the European Single Market is facing in the 21st century result from the enlargement to Central and Eastern Europe, the EMU, and the globalization of trade and investment that has aided the rise of competitive emerging markets. This state-of-the-art book provides fresh theoretical and empirical evidence on the challenges presented by integration and globalization for both developed and developing countries. The authors demonstrate how the European Single Market remains a work in progress with many critical issues still to be addressed. These include the rigidities in product and labor markets, the need for innovation and quality upgrading, and the rapid catch-up of new member countries. They go on to show how firms use the opportunities provided by integration and globalization to fragment their production processes internationally, which brings gains but also requires structural adjustment. The book also argues that global environmental coordination may be less detrimental to the growth prospects of developing countries than is commonly believed. Histories of migrancy and the creation of urban 'stranger' communities are fundamental in deciding who lives where and what this means, materially and socially.     Abstract: "Today human ecology has split into many different sub-disciplines such as historical ecology, political ecology or the New Ecological Anthropology. The latter in particular has criticised the predominance of the Western view on different ecosystems, arguing that culture-specific world views and human-environment interactions have been largely neglected. However, these different perspectives only tackle specific facets of a local and global hyper-complex reality. The authors address the effect of the global credit crunch and financial shocks on China’s economic growth; China’s contribution to greenhouse gas emissions and emissions reduction schemes; the environmental consequences of foreign direct investment in China; the relationship between air pollution and mortality; the effect of climate change on agricultural output; the coal industry’s compliance with tougher regulations; and the constraints water shortages may impose on China’s economy. It also emphasises the importance of managing the rising demand for energy to moderate oil price increases and placating domestic and international concerns about global warming.In the thirty years since China started on the path of reform, it has emerged as one of the largest and most dynamic economies in the world.     Abstract: Faced with intensified environmental degradation and decreased agricultural land productivity, the Chinese government has sought policy interventions to reverse both of these negative trends. Among the policy instruments is the Conversion of Cropland to Forest and Grassland Program (CCFGP) that aims to change the pattern of agricultural land use in 25 provinces and autonomous regions across China. This book provides the most comprehensive assessment of the CCFGP undertaken to date. It allows the consideration of fundamental questions pertaining to the sustainability of the land use changes brought about by the CCFGP, its cost effectiveness and the prospects for policy evolution.     Abstract: Im Unterschied zu Menschen der asiatischen Schwellenländer betrachten Politiker, Universitätslehrer und Geschäftsleute aus afrikanischen Ländern die Globalisierung eher mit Furcht: Können hochgradig hilfeabhängig gewordene Volkswirtschaften hoffen, nicht nur die Risiken der Globalisierung erleiden zu müssen, sondern auch von ihren Chancen profitieren zu können? Das Buch versucht, auf diese Schicksalsfrage Afrikas eine differenzierte Antwort zu geben. Es wird aufgezeigt, dass Afrika zwar weitgehend als bisheriger Verlierer der Globalisierung bezeichnet werden muss, dass jedoch vielerlei Formen der Anpassung und aktiven Bewältigung der globalen Herausforderungen entwickelt wurden. Die Globalisierung erscheint zwar als "Falle" : sie ist von Afrikanern nicht ersehnt worden, aber auch aus Fallen gibt es Auswege, und Modernisierung wird keineswegs abgelehnt. Afrika gibt es nur im Plural, und der weit verbreitete Afropessimismus tut den Afrikanerinnen und Afrikanern Unrecht, die unter schwierigsten materiellen Bedingungen für Demokratie und Menschenrechte und gegen Korruption und Selbstzerstörung eintreten.

Dr. Olaf Schnur ist wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Geographischen Institut der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Seine Arbeitsschwerpunkte sind Stadt- und Sozialgeographie, Quartiersentwicklung in Großstädten und soziale Stadtentwicklung.
    Abstract: Wohnviertel, Stadtquartiere, Kieze: Für BewohnerInnen sind sie nicht mehr und nicht weniger als die lokale Verankerung in der (Groß)stadt und der globalisierten Welt. In der Wissenschaft gibt es inzwischen vielfältige Diskurse über den lokalen Nahraum, nicht zuletzt im Kontext raumtheoretischer Debatten. Aber auch als strategische Planungskategorie ist das Quartier wichtig ? es hat als Meso-Level zwischen Regional-, Stadt- und Individualebene in den letzten Jahren geradezu Karriere gemacht: Stadtentwicklungsprogramme wie "Soziale Stadt" oder "Stadtumbau Ost/West" und auch privatwirtschaftliche Wohnungsmarktakteure konzentrieren sich mehr und mehr auf das Quartier als konzeptionellen Kern. Mit dem Ziel, einen vertieften Dialog anzustoßen, zeigen die AutorInnen dieses ersten Bandes der Reihe ?Quartiersforschung? aus verschiedenen wissenschaftlichen Disziplinen und der Praxis wichtige Themenfelder einer intensivierten Quartiersforschung auf. Das Spektrum der Beiträge reicht von kritisch-raumtheoretischen über kommunale bis hin zu wohnungswirtschaftlich-städtebaulichen Betrachtungen.

Vor dem Hintergrund dieser Tendenzen und der „kulturellen Wende“, welche verschiedene Fachdisziplinen in jüngster Zeit durchlaufen haben, stellen sich zehn renommierte Wissenschaftler aus der Sicht von sieben Fachdisziplinen der seit Max Weber immer wieder thematisierten Fragen nach dem Zusammenhang von Kultur und Entwicklung und versuchen, diese aus der Kenntnis heutiger Problemlagen zu beantworten.
