Ihre Analyse entschlüsselt die Bedeutung unterschiedlicher Machtformen für Konfliktentstehung und -verlauf und zeigt soziale Ungleichheitsverhältnisse im Kontext von land grabbing auf

    Abstract: Care work is a vital foundation of society. Without the many people who look after children every day, care for relatives in need of support or help people in crisis, this society would collapse immediately. At the same time, those who take on this work are equally overstretched as the ecosystems and their material cycles on which all life is based. These problems are ultimately not solvable in a capitalist social order. Therefore, we need to radically limit profit-oriented economic activity in favour of a care economy that is oriented towards successful care relationships and the resilience of ecosystems. The concept of the Care Revolution opens the way to a society characterised by care and solidarity instead of competition and exclusion.
    Abstract: Nicht zuletzt die Corona-Pandemie hat überdeutlich gezeigt, dass Sorgearbeit ein lebensnotwendiges Fundament der Gesellschaft ist. Ebenso notwendig ist die Bewahrung eines Klimas, das menschliches Leben ermöglicht. Daher zielt die umfassende Transformationsstrategie der Care Revolution darauf ab, eine solidarische und zugleich nachhaltige Care-Ökonomie aufzubauen, in der sich die Rahmenbedingungen für Care-Beschäftigte und familiär Sorgearbeitende deutlich verbessern.Die Konzentration auf Sorge und Solidarität als zentrale Gestaltungsprinzipien des gesellschaftlichen Handelns ermöglichen aber auch in anderen ökonomischen Bereichen eine Umgestaltung unter Achtung der ökologischen Grenzen.

    Abstract: Biographical note: Steven Engler (Dr.), geb. 1985, ist promovierter Geograph und Projektleiter der Arbeitsgruppe »Gesellschaft und Nachhaltigkeit im Wandel« am Geographischen Institut der Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) und des Virtuellen Instituts »Transformation - Energiewende NRW«. Er hat Geographie studiert und anschließend als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Institut für Landes- und Stadtentwicklungsforschung (ILS) und am Institut für Entwicklungsforschung und Entwicklungspolitik (IEE) gearbeitet. Am Kulturwissenschaftlichen Institut Essen (KWI) war er Co-Leiter des Forschungsbereichs »Partizipationskultur«. Seine Promotion hat er an der Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen über den Themenkomplex der Nahrungsmittelunsicherheit und Klimaextremen abgeschlossen. Julia Janik, geb. 1993, studiert Wirtschaft und Politik Ostasiens mit Schwerpunkt Politik und Chinesisch an der Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) und ist dort Mitarbeiterin am Geographischen Institut in der Arbeitsgruppe »Gesellschaft und Nachhaltigkeit im Wandel«.     Abstract: The global phenomenon of political consumerism is known through such diverse manifestations as corporate boycotts, increased preferences for organic and fair-trade products, and lifestyle choices such as veganism. It has also become an area of increasing research across a variety of disciplines. Political consumerism usesconsumer power to change institutional or market practices that are found ethically, environmentally, or politically objectionable. Through such actions, the goods offered on the consumer market are problematized and politicized. Distinctions between consumers and citizens and between the economy and politics collapse. The Oxford Handbook of Political Consumerism offers the first comprehensive theoretical and comparative overview of the ways in which the market becomes a political arena. It maps the four major forms of political consumerism: boycotting, buycotting (spending to show support), lifestyle politics, and discursive actions, such as culture jamming.     Abstract: 〈p〉Das private Auto war für lange Zeit das Sehnsuchtsobjekt und Symbol eines glücklichen Lebens. Es war eine kollektive Liebe der Mittelschicht und derjenigen, die dort hinstrebten. Doch diese affektive Bindung verliert vor allem in der Stadt zunehmend an Kraft. Wenigstens dort ist bereits klar geworden: Die 〈i〉Grenzen des fossilen Automobilismus〈/i〉 sind erreicht. Es gibt einfach zu viele Autos.〈br /〉Die Verkehrswende ist nun auf der Agenda. Zukunftsfähig sind nur solche Verkehrsangebote, die auch unter Ressourcenknappheit individualisierbar bleiben. Autos nutzen statt besitzen wird - in Verbindung mit digitalen Plattformen - attraktiv, das Radfahren gewinnt gerade in den Städten an Popularität. Mobilitätsdienstleistungen kommen aus der Nische und können dank Echtzeitinformationen flexibel und zugleich routinemäßig genutzt werden. Der herrschende Rechtsrahmen jedoch privilegiert nach wie vor private Autos. Dagegen deuten die Präferenzen der vorwiegend städtischen Bevölkerung und auch die digitalen Optionen in eine andere Richtung: Die fortschreitende 〈i〉Individualisierung〈/i〉 findet andere Wege als den privaten Besitz von Autos.〈/p〉
    Abstract: 〈p〉The privately owned car was an object of desire and a symbol of a happy life. It was the collective love of the middle class and those who strove to that social level. Yet this affective affection has been dwindling particularly in cities. At least there it has become obvious that the limits 〈i〉of fossile automobilism〈/i〉 have been reached. There are simply too many cars around. Now the transformation of traffic is on the agenda. Only traffic systems that will be able to still individualize when resources become rare are sustainable. Using cars instead of owning them will become attractive in connection with digital platforms; bicycles are becoming more popular, especially in cities. Mobility services are coming out of the wings and can be used flexibly yet routinely thanks to information in real time. Privately owned vehicles, however, are still privileged by the current legal framework. Yet the preferences of the mainly urban population and the available digital options are pointing in another direction: The progressing 〈i〉individualization 〈/i〉finds other means than privately owned cars.〈/p〉

    Abstract: Konstantin Kehl geht der Frage nach, weshalb es trotz Reformbedarfs und langjähriger Debatten bisher nicht gelungen ist, die Versorgungsstrukturen für pflege- und unterstützungsbedürftige Menschen im Sinne einer sozialinvestiven Politik weiterzuentwickeln, die die Vereinbarkeit von Pflege und Beruf verbessert und zivilgesellschaftliche Strukturen fördert. Der Autor fokussiert die Fähigkeiten von Koalitionen öffentlicher und privater Akteure zur Einflussnahme auf kollektiv bindende Entscheidungen in der Verhandlungsdemokratie und untersucht zwei mustergültige Reformen sozialinvestiver Pflegepolitik. Er zeigt, weshalb ökonomisch und im Sinne der Lebensqualität von Menschen vielversprechende Konzepte bisweilen politisch nicht konsequent umgesetzt werden.     Abstract: This book shows how Chinese officials have responded to popular and international pressure, while at the same time seeking to preserve their own careers, in the context of disaster management. Using the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake as a case study, it illustrates how authoritarian regimes are creating new governance mechanisms in response to the changing global environment and what challenges they are confronted with in the process. The book examines both the immediate and long-term effects of a major disaster on China’s policy, institutions, and governing practices, and seeks to explain which factors lead to hasty and poorly conceived reconstruction efforts, which in turn reproduce the very same conditions of vulnerability or expose communities to new risks. In short, it tells a “political” story of how intra-governmental interactions, state-society relations, and international engagement can shape the processes and outcomes of recovery and reconstruction

Politicized motherhood persists, and motherhood continues to inspire women's participation and direct their concerns. In The Political Consequences of Motherhood, Jill S. Greenlee investigates the complex relationship between motherhood and women's political attitudes. Combining a historical overview of the ways motherhood has been used for political purposes with recent political opinion surveys and individual-level analysis, she explains how and when motherhood shapes women's thoughts and preferences. Greenlee argues that two mechanisms account for the durability of motherhood politics. First, women experience attitudinal shifts when they become mothers.     Abstract: This timely book makes a forceful argument that the analyses from behavioral economists are incomplete, the policies advocated by libertarian paternalists are misguided and unethical, and both actually reinforce the cognitive biases and dysfunctions that motivate 'nudges' in the first place. In a lighthearted manner, the author points out critical flaws in the way economists model decision-making, how behavioral economics failed to correct them, and how they led to the problems with libertarian paternalism and nudges. Seit 2010 leitet er dort auch den Arbeitsbereich Studium Integrale am Institut für Wissenschaftskommunikation und Hochschulforschung in Wien. Zu seinen Arbeitsschwerpunkten zählen die Umweltgeschichte vorindustrieller Agrargesellschaften, historische Nachhaltigkeitsforschung und die Umweltgeschichte von Flüssen.

    Abstract: This collection of essays, four of which are published in English for the first time, represents the life's work of the historian Tim Mason, one of the most original and perceptive scholars of National Socialism, who pioneered its social and labour history. His provocative articles and essays, written between 1964 and 1990, exhibit a combination of empirical rigour and theoretical astuteness which made them landmarks in the definition and elaboration of major debates in the historiography of National Socialism. These ten essays collect together Mason's most significant writings, including discussions of the domestic origins of the Second World War, the role of Hitler, and the character of working-class resistance, as well as his pathbreaking study of women under National Socialism, and examples of comparative work on fascism and Nazism.     Abstract: The biological sciences are adding value to a host of products and services, producing what some have labelled the “bioeconomy” and offering the potential to make major socio-economic contributions in OECD countries. Using quantitative analyses of data on development pipelines and R&D expenditures from private and public databases, this book estimates biotechnological developments to 2015. Moving to a broader institutional view, it also looks at the roles of R&D funding, human resources, intellectual property, and regulation in the bioeconomy, as well as at possible developments that could influence emerging business models to create scenarios to 2030. These scenarios are included to stimulate reflection on the interplay between policy choices and technological advances in shaping the bioeconomy.     Abstract: The current economic situation has obliged the international donor community to reexamine its stance on the conditionality of development assistance. This study evaluates which controversies persist with respect to aid conditionality, how successful donors have been in stemming the rising tide of aid conditionality of the 1980s and 1990s, and whether the donor community practices what it preaches regarding the allocation of aid based on governance and development criteria. Above all, the report considers how the financial crisis has rendered it increasingly difficult to maintain traditional conditionality frameworks. Strategies for reducing the number of aid conditionalities and for enhancing recipient ownership of aid policies are proposed in light of the unsustainability of existing frameworks.--Publisher's description.

    Abstract: 'Natural Resources and Conflict in Africa' is the first book to offer a detailed look at conflict over various natural resources in several African countries. Abiodun Alao undertakes this broad survey by categorizing natural resources into four groups: land (including agricultural practices and animal stock), solid minerals, oil, and water. Themes linking these resources to governance and conflict are then identified and examined with numerous examples drawn from specific African countries. Alao's approach offers considered conclusions based on comparative discussions and analysis, thus providing the first comprehensive account of the linkage between natural resources and political and social conflict in Africa. The author has designed a unique methodology - the social fabric matrix (SFM) - that encourages relevant questions, defines and models a whole that transcends system components and describes their relationships, includes cultural values, social beliefs, and institutional rules, identifies system feedback loops, guides the development of social indicators and builds a database for statistical analysis, coordinates temporal sequences, compares the consequences of alternative policies, and includes the ability to relate research to the broader reality of political action such as lobbying, budgetary processes, and administrative implementation.     Abstract: The profound transformations that preceded the downfall of Communism originated in Poland and Hungary, but played out in strikingly different ways. Hungary led through economic reform, Poland through open political struggle. Analysis of these transformational variants yields important insights into systemic change, marketization, and democratization. This book shows how these changes were possible in authoritarian regimes as, over time, state and society became mutually vulnerable, neither fully able to dictate the terms of engagement. For Poland this meant principled confrontation; for Hungary, innovative accommodation. This book argues that different conceptual frameworks and strategies of persuasion account for these divergences in virtually identical institutional settings. Seleny traces the different political-institutional residues which, in both Hungary and Poland, now function as constraining or enabling legacies. In particular, she demonstrates that state socialist legacies account for salient differences between these two new capitalist democracies, and now condition their prospects in the European Union

    Abstract: Do political decentralisation and inter state competition favour innovation and growth? There has long been a lively debate surrounding this question, going back to David Hume and Immanuel Kant. This book is a new attempt to test its veracity. The existing literature tends to assume that the beneficial effects of inter state competition have been confined to European history. By contrast, China, India and the Islamic Middle East are regarded as inherently imperial and overcentralised. However, these civilisations have not always been unified politically. In their history, there have been long spells of decentralised rule or inter state competition. The same is true for Japan. If the Hume-Kant hypothesis is correct, it should also apply to those periods. This volume analyses the qualitative and quantitative evidence

    Abstract: Dialogue has a long lineage but a relatively recent research tradition. The goal of this volume is to elevate dialogue onto the research agenda by addressing such questions as: how can we make dialogue actionable and effective in organizational practice? How can dialogue inform decision making in a particular problem domain or community of interest when multiple people, groups, and organizations are involved? How can dialogue be utilized to build more vibrant, democratic communities? To what extent can the Internet and new information technology support the dialogical process? How can we describe the relational field that dialogue creates and build a theory of social communication and information processing that explains the organization and dynamics of dialogue, and its implications for psychosocial function? The volume addresses these questions in four sections: the foundations, perspectives, practice and theory of dialogue. By design, the contributors draw from wide-ranging philosophical and disciplinary traditions: anthropology, communication, information, management, neuro-psychology, organization theory, philosophy, psychology, political science, public policy, quantum physics, and sociology. As dialogue attempts to break down the barriers among people, the authors defend a more robust understanding of dialogue that requires scholars and practitioners to move beyond the confines of one academic tradition and to study it in a more comprehensive and integrated way. The disciplinary reach of this title should attract scholars and practitioners interested in the general area of dialogue and communication, as well as related topics such as collaboration, public engagement, citizen participation, deliberative democracy, stakeholder relations, networks, interorganizational relationships, and community building.
