    Abstract: The notion of apocalypse is an age-old concept which has gained renewed interest in popular and scholarly discourse. The book highlights the versatile explications of apocalypse today, demonstrating that apocalyptic transformations - the various encounters with anthropogenic climate change, nuclear violence, polarized politics, colonial assault, and capitalist extractivism - navigate a range of interdisciplinary views on the present moment. Moving from old worlds to new worlds, from world-ending experiences to apocalyptic imaginaries and, finally, from authoritarianism to activism and advocacy, the contributions begin to map the emerging field of Apocalyptic and Post-Apocalyptic Studies. Foregrounding the myriad ways in which collective imaginations of apocalypse underpin ethical, political, and, sometimes, individual experience, the authors provide key points of reference for understanding old and new predicaments that are transforming our many worlds

    Abstract: The Civil Rights Act of 1964 provides protections against discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex and national origin. Sexual orientation and gender identity, however, are excluded and LGBTQ citizens can be legally discriminated against in many fundamental areas that others take for granted as a legal right. The LGBTQ community in America comprises approximately 3.4 percent of the US population, or roughly 9 million citizens. Regardless of the size of the population, this book argues, all US citizens deserve the same rights granted under the US constitution - i.e. in addition to marriage equality, LGBTQ citizens deserve equal protection in employment, housing, medical decisions, military service, and adoption - to name but a few. Using social equity theory and intersectionality but written in an accessible style, this book demonstrates some of the ways in which LGBTQ citizens have been marginalized for their identity, and argues that the field of public administration has a unique responsibility to prioritize social equity. Discrete categories utilized by the US Census Bureau (male or female, heterosexual or homosexual), for example, must shift to a continuum to accurately capture demographic characteristics and citizen behavior. Evidenced based outcomes and disparities between heterosexual and LGBTQ populations are carefully delineated to provide a legal rationale for a compelling governmental interest, and policy recommendations are provided - including overdue federal legislation to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation.     Abstract: "Colonial rule distorts a colony's economy and its society, and British rule was no exception. British policies led to a stratified American colonial society with slaves on the bottom and white settlers on top. The divided society functioned through laws that imposed rules and defined roles of the respective races. This occurred in other colonies too, often leading to strife that continues today. Especially since World War II the United States seems finally to have been able to remove many laws and practices that had created barriers between races in the divided society. Appeals to legitimacy, such as by abolitionists and the Civil Rights Movement, were essential to change laws from support of the divided society to instruments for disestablishing it. Thanks to the rule of law - another important British legacy -- the U.S. is much farther along than many former colonies in making progress. By highlighting the history of the interplay of two fundamental concepts, the divided society and the rule of law, and briefly contrasting the experiences of other former colonies, this book shows how the United States has made significant long-term progress, although incomplete, and ways for this to continue today"--

    Abstract: "America's constitutional system evolves through the interplay between three cycles: the rise and fall of dominant political parties, the waxing and waning of political polarization, and alternating episodes of constitutional rot and constitutional renewal. America's politics seems especially fraught today because we are nearing the end of the Republican Party's long political dominance, at the height of a long cycle of political polarization, and suffering from an advanced case of "constitutional rot." Constitutional rot is the historical process through which republics become increasingly less representative and less devoted to the common good. Caused by increasing economic inequality and loss of trust, constitutional rot seriously threatens the constitutional system. But America has been through these cycles before, and will get through them again. America is in a Second Gilded Age slowly moving toward a second Progressive Era, during which polarization will eventually recede. The same cycles shape the work of the federal courts and theories about constitutional interpretation. They explain why political parties have switched sides on judicial review not once but twice in the twentieth century. Polarization and constitutional rot alter the political supports for judicial review, make fights over judicial appointments especially bitter, and encourage constitutional hardball. The Constitution ordinarily relies on the judiciary to protect democracy and to prevent political corruption and self-entrenching behavior. But when constitutional rot is advanced, the Supreme Court is likely to be ineffective and may even make matters worse. Courts cannot save the country from constitutional rot; only political mobilization can"--

    Abstract: "Why should we care about religious liberty? Leading commentators, United Kingdom courts, and the European Court of Human Rights have de-emphasised the special importance of religious liberty. They frequently contend it falls within a more general concern for personal autonomy. In this liberal egalitarian account, religious liberty claims are often rejected when faced with competing individual interests - the neutral secular state must protect us against the liberty-constraining acts of religions. Joel Harrison challenges this account. He argues that it is rooted in a theologically derived narrative of secularisation: rather than being neutral, it rests on a specific construction of 'secular' and 'religious' spheres. This challenge makes space for an alternative theological, political, and legal vision. Drawing from Christian thought, from St Augustine to John Milbank, Harrison develops a post-liberal focus on association. Religious liberty, he argues, facilitates creating communities seeking solidarity, fraternity, and charity - goals that are central to our common good"--

Dieser Band zeichnet basierend auf zahlreichen Gesprächen aus kulturanthropologischer Perspektive die Entstehungsgeschichten einzelner Patientenverfügungen nach. Dabei werden hintergründige Wirkmechanismen offengelegt, vor denen sich Individuen in einem komplexen Gefüge aus Interaktionen, Wissenshierarchien und gesellschaftlichen Verhaltensnormen als präventiv handelnde Akteure konstituieren.     Abstract: Die britische Mathematikenthusiastin ("Mathematik der Liebe"), Professorin in London, schreibt über das Wirken von Algorithmen in den Daseinsdimensionen "Macht, Daten, Justiz, Medizin, Autos, Kriminalität, Kunst." Die Algorithmen entscheiden für uns oder bereiten Entscheidungen vor, doch sie sind indiskret, fehlerbehaftet (wie menschliches Handeln), ungerecht und gaukeln eine Sicherheit vor, die sie nur bedingt geben können. Die Autorin referiert die z.T. bekannten Beispiele. Vieles grenze, vor allem in der sogenannten KI, die sie lieber eine erweiterte Computerstatistik nennen wolle, an "Zauberei", vor allem dann, wenn nicht mehr erklärt werden könne, wie die Ergebnisse zustande kämen. Die Kernfrage bleibe also, wie sehr wir den Algorithmen trauen und sie als Autorität in unserem/über unser Leben anerkennen. Man muss nicht zum Cyborg werden, aber ein vernünftiges und rationales Miteinander von menschlichen und algorithmisierten Verfahren sei ein anstrebenswertes Ziel. Sehr gut zu lesen, gut neben z.B. K.     Abstract: Religiöses Recht ist immer wieder in Diskussion: Jüdisches Recht bei der Beschneidung, islamisches Recht beim Schächten und katholisches Kirchenrecht bei der Bistums-Finanzverwaltung. Die Säkularisierung trennte Staat und Religion in der Weise, dass für das Recht der Staat zuständig ist. Können, sollen Religionsgemeinschaften trotzdem ihr eigenes internes Recht haben? Die Autorinnen und Autoren gehen dieser Frage aus unterschiedlichen geographischen und religiösen Richtungen nach und verbinden die theologischen und religiös-rechtlichen Binnenperspektiven mit religionshistorischen, philosophischen, sozialanthropologischen und weltlich-rechtlichen Außenperspektiven. Religionsfreiheit erweist sich dabei als Verbindungsglied, aber auch als Filterinstanz zwischen beiden Bereichen. So zeigt sich, dass die Begründung religiösen Rechts womöglich gerade in einem sich fortentwickelnden Verständnis von Säkularisierung liegt.
