    Abstract: "Through what strategies might contemporary artists confront cultural assumptions about race? In what ways can the devices that make race feel familiar-such as stereotypes or strategic essentialism-be used to make race feel unfamiliar? What new perspectives might emerge out of such disorienting confrontations? In The Racial Unfamiliar, John Brooks argues that twenty-first-century African American artists have turned to abstractionist aesthetics to complicate and illuminate how we think and see race. Brooks shows that established categories of cultural production-such as "African American art" or "Black history"-reproduce familiar but confining ideas about race, and that some audiences assume such ideas reflect a "truth" about Black identity or Black experience in the United States. Instead of countering representations of race with "authentic" portrayals of African American identity and experience, recent artists have begun exaggerating and overemphasizing them. By inflating and abstracting clichéd representations and stereotypes, these artists expose the incongruities that underlie racist attitudes and refute the idea that any single African American experience exists to be represented. Through the production of illegible misrepresentations of a multitude of black experiences, the literary and visual works considered in this book insist that blackness exceeds categorical representation. Brooks traces the disorienting effects of this experimental aesthetic through a broad array of recent artworks, from novels and plays by Percival Everett and Suzan-Lori Parks to photography by Roy DeCarava and installation art by Kara Walker, to show how contemporary African American cultural production can be understood as an operation in abstracting and upending the cultural determinants that make racial Blackness intelligible"--

On the one hand, this is a book about labor exchange in the gig economy masquerading as a book about the value of qualitative empirical data for law and policy development. On the other hand, this is also a book about the value of qualitative empirical data masquerading as a book about the buying, selling, and performance of labor via gig companies like Uber and Airbnb. Since a reader may find it difficult to tell which of these two she is reading at any given moment this introduction will sketch the contours and purpose of each book. Gig Work as a book about labor exchange in the gig economy this volume dives deeply into what is, in many ways, the hot-button work law issue of the day. The gig economy has generated immense popular interest in labor conditions - no mean feat in an era of decreasing unionization and growing corporate power - as much as it has commanded attention from policymakers and scholars. Work and leisure, family and friendship, community and citizenship-all transformed by now-ubiquitous digital tools and platforms. Digital Technology and Democratic Theory explores a particularly unsettling and rapidly evolving facet of our new digital lives: transformations that affect our lives as citizens and participants in democratic governments. To understand these transformations, scholars from multiple disciplines (computer science, philosophy, political science, economics, history, and media and communications/journalism) wrestle with the question of how digital technologies shape, reshape, and affect fundamental questions about democracy and democratic theory.     Abstract: The Civil Rights Act of 1964 provides protections against discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex and national origin. Sexual orientation and gender identity, however, are excluded and LGBTQ citizens can be legally discriminated against in many fundamental areas that others take for granted as a legal right. The LGBTQ community in America comprises approximately 3.4 percent of the US population, or roughly 9 million citizens. Regardless of the size of the population, this book argues, all US citizens deserve the same rights granted under the US constitution - i.e. in addition to marriage equality, LGBTQ citizens deserve equal protection in employment, housing, medical decisions, military service, and adoption - to name but a few. Using social equity theory and intersectionality but written in an accessible style, this book demonstrates some of the ways in which LGBTQ citizens have been marginalized for their identity, and argues that the field of public administration has a unique responsibility to prioritize social equity. Discrete categories utilized by the US Census Bureau (male or female, heterosexual or homosexual), for example, must shift to a continuum to accurately capture demographic characteristics and citizen behavior. Evidenced based outcomes and disparities between heterosexual and LGBTQ populations are carefully delineated to provide a legal rationale for a compelling governmental interest, and policy recommendations are provided - including overdue federal legislation to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation. Yet despite our continued fascination, we rarely consider how this iconic design sensibility was marketed to the diverse audiences of its era. Examining advice manuals, advertisements in Life and Ebony, furniture, art, and more, Mid-Century Modernism and the American Body offers a powerful new look at how codes of race, gender, and identity influenced-and were influenced by-Modern design and shaped its presentation to consumers.Taking us to the booming suburban landscape of postwar America, Kristina Wilson demonstrates that the ideals defined by popular Modernist furnishings were far from neutral or race-blind. Advertisers offered this aesthetic to White audiences as a solution for keeping dirt and outsiders at bay, an approach that reinforced middle-class White privilege. By contrast, media arenas such as Ebony magazine presented African American readers with an image of Modernism as a style of comfort, security, and social confidence. Wilson shows how etiquette and home decorating manuals served to control women by associating them with the domestic sphere, and she considers how furniture by George Nelson and Charles and Ray Eames, as well as smaller-scale decorative accessories, empowered some users, even while constraining others.     Abstract: "America's constitutional system evolves through the interplay between three cycles: the rise and fall of dominant political parties, the waxing and waning of political polarization, and alternating episodes of constitutional rot and constitutional renewal. America's politics seems especially fraught today because we are nearing the end of the Republican Party's long political dominance, at the height of a long cycle of political polarization, and suffering from an advanced case of "constitutional rot." Constitutional rot is the historical process through which republics become increasingly less representative and less devoted to the common good. Caused by increasing economic inequality and loss of trust, constitutional rot seriously threatens the constitutional system. But America has been through these cycles before, and will get through them again. America is in a Second Gilded Age slowly moving toward a second Progressive Era, during which polarization will eventually recede. The same cycles shape the work of the federal courts and theories about constitutional interpretation. They explain why political parties have switched sides on judicial review not once but twice in the twentieth century. Polarization and constitutional rot alter the political supports for judicial review, make fights over judicial appointments especially bitter, and encourage constitutional hardball. The Constitution ordinarily relies on the judiciary to protect democracy and to prevent political corruption and self-entrenching behavior. But when constitutional rot is advanced, the Supreme Court is likely to be ineffective and may even make matters worse. Courts cannot save the country from constitutional rot; only political mobilization can"--

British policies led to a stratified American colonial society with slaves on the bottom and white settlers on top. The divided society functioned through laws that imposed rules and defined roles of the respective races. This occurred in other colonies too, often leading to strife that continues today. Especially since World War II the United States seems finally to have been able to remove many laws and practices that had created barriers between races in the divided society. Appeals to legitimacy, such as by abolitionists and the Civil Rights Movement, were essential to change laws from support of the divided society to instruments for disestablishing it. Thanks to the rule of law - another important British legacy -- the U.S. is much farther along than many former colonies in making progress. By highlighting the history of the interplay of two fundamental concepts, the divided society and the rule of law, and briefly contrasting the experiences of other former colonies, this book shows how the United States has made significant long-term progress, although incomplete, and ways for this to continue today"--

In 'Memory Passages', Natasha Goldman analyzes both previously-overlooked and internationally-recognized Holocaust memorials in the United States and Germany from the postwar period to the present, drawing on many historical documents for the first time. From the perspectives of visual culture and art history, the book examines changing attitudes toward the Holocaust and the artistic choices that respond to it.The book introduces lesser-known sculptures, such as Nathan Rapoport's 'Monument to the Six Million Jewish Martyrs' in Philadelphia, as well as internationally-acclaimed works, such as Peter Eisenman's 'Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe' in Berlin. Other artists examined include Will Lammert, Richard Serra, Joel Shapiro, Gerson Fehrenbach, Margit Kahl, and Andy Goldsworthy. Archival documents and interviews with commissioners, survivors, and artists reveal the conversations and decisions that have shaped Holocaust memorials.     Abstract: "This book compares the rights and social inclusion of two racialized minority groups: Roma in Central and Southeast Europe ("CSEE") and African Americans in the United States ("U.S."), primarily in the American South. We couch those attempts loosely in the frameworks of Roma rights and civil rights, though we will focus primarily on Roma rights in post-Communist CSEE (from 1991 until the present) and civil rights during the U.S. Civil Rights Movement (roughly 1954-1968). Scholars have made fleeting comparisons between Roma and African Americans for years, and in the last decade, the Roma rights-Civil Rights comparison has recurred with increasing frequency. Despite the burgeoning recognition of the broader similarities between Roma and African Americans, including the systems that facilitate their marginalization and the barriers to their representation, no book-length work has sustained these comparisons"--

    Abstract: This volume looks at popular manorath paintings of Pushti Marg devotees from the Anil Relia collection. Art collector Anil Relia had always admired the miniature paintings of the Nathdwara school, which grew out of the religious devotion of the Pushti Marg (Path of Grace). On one of his trips to this pilgrimage town, he encountered 'manorath' paintings, whose unusual visual elements attracted his attention immediately.     Abstract: This Companion provides a broad, historically informed introduction to the study of the US constitutional system. In place of the usual laundry lists of cases, doctrines, and theories, it presents a picture of the constitutional system in action, with separate sections devoted to constitutional principles, organizational structures, and the various legal and extra-legal 'actions' through which litigators and average citizens have attempted to bring about constitutional change. Finally, the volume covers a number of subjects that are rarely discussed in works aimed at a general audience, but which are critical to ensuring that constitutional rights are honored in the day-to-day lives of citizens. These include standing and causes of action, suits against officeholders, and the inner workings of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC).     Abstract: "Campaigns against prostitution of young people in the United States have surged and ebbed multiple times over the last fifty years. Fighting the U.S. Youth Sex Trade: Race, Gender, and Politics examines how politically and ideologically diverse activists joined together to change perceptions and public policies on youth involvement in the sex trade over time, reframing "juvenile prostitution" of the 1970s as "commercial sexual exploitation of children" in the 1990s, and then as "domestic minor sex trafficking" in the 2000s. Based on organizational archives and interviews with activists, Baker shows that these campaigns were fundamentally shaped by the politics of gender, race and class, and global anti-trafficking campaigns. The author argues that the very frames that have made these movements so successful in achieving new laws and programs for youth have limited their ability to achieve systematic reforms that could decrease youth vulnerability to involvement in the sex trade"--
