Abstract: "Using truly interdisciplinary social science, this book demonstrates the many ways in which social and cultural forces affect individuals in their relationships on a regular basis. It is the first of its kind to highlight the diverse contexts in which romantic relationships operate"--
Abstract: Embedded within the sociocultural context of romantic relationships are features such as race, culture, neighborhoods, the legal system, and governmental policy. Due to the inherent difficulties with studying large structures and systems, little work has been done at the macro level in relationship science. This volume spotlights the complex interplay between romantic relationships and these structural systems, including varied insights from experts in the field. In turn, more diverse and generalizable research programs on the social ecology of relationships can be developed, helping to facilitate advances in theory. Scholars and students of relationship science in psychology, sociology, communication, and family studies will benefit from these discussions. Abstract: "Central banks act as systemic firefighters, quelling financial instability. This book traces post-crisis attempts to limit instability, turning central banks de facto into policemen. It details the massive investment of central bank economists to enable this preventive policy and shows administrative and political constraints limiting its effects"--
Abstract: Macroprudential regulation is a set of economic and policy tools that aim to mitigate risk in the financial and banking systems. It was largely developed in response to the financial crisis of 2007-08, turning central banks into de facto financial policemen. Taming the Cycles of Finance traces the post-crisis rise of macroprudential regulation and argues that, despite its original aims, it typically supports finance in times of crisis but fails to curb it in times of booms. Investigating how different macroprudential frameworks developed in the UK, the USA and the Eurozone, the book explains how central bank economists went about building early warning systems to identify fragilities in the financial system. It then shows how administrative and political constraints limited the effects of this shift, as central banks were wary of intervening in a discretionary manner and policymakers were opposed to measures to limit credit growth.

Abstract: "This important and timely book explains the political culture of violence that has shaped the United States from its inception. It will engage students, scholars and general readers interested in American history, African American history, and American studies"--
Abstract: Born in Blood investigates one of history's most violent undertakings: The United States of America. People the world over consider violence in the United States as measurably different than that which troubles the rest of the globe, citing reasons including gun culture, the American West, Hollywood, the death penalty, economic inequality, rampant individualism, and more. This compelling examination of American violence explains a political culture of violence from the American Revolution to the Gilded Age, illustrating how physical force, often centered on racial hierarchy, sustained the central tenets of American liberal government. It offers an important story of nationhood, told through the experiences and choices of civilians, Indians, politicians, soldiers, and the enslaved, providing historical context for understanding how violence has shaped the United States from its inception

Abstract: This history of early modern news focuses on news itself rather than specific material forms. Centering on movement through different media, time, and place, it makes the case for a truly comparative, pan-European history of news. After the Introduction, the second section, News Moves, explores how we think about and research news culture and news communication, demonstrating movement is more important than static forms. The third, News Sings, focuses on news ballads, comparing actors, publics, music, and soundscapes of ballad singing in several European cities, highlighting the central role of immaterial elements, such as sound, music and voice. The fourth, News Counts, argues that seeing news the way a machine might read it-through its metadata-is one way of moving beyond form, allowing us to find surprising commonalities in news cultures which differ greatly in both time and place.

Mobilizations such as #FridaysforFuture and Extinction Rebellion are converging with Indigenous peoples' movements and other social justice movements to convey the urgency and the scale needed for climate action. Reports by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, informed by developments in attribution science, establish more precise links between greenhouse gas emissions, extreme weather events, and human impacts. In the meantime, collaborations between scientists and journalists have drawn the broader public's attention to detailed information about the magnitude of planet-warming emissions associated with the activities of major fossil fuel companies"--

Abstract: "Seeking Justice: Access to Remedy for Corporate Human Rights Abuse explores victims' varying experiences in seeking remedy mechanisms for corporate human rights abuse. It puts forward a novel theory about the possibility of productive contestation and explores governance outcomes for victims of corporate human rights abuse across Latin America. This foundation informs three pathways that victims can use to press for their rights: working within the institutional environment, capitalizing on corporate characteristics, and elevating voices. Seeking Justice challenges the common assumptions in the governance gap literature and argues instead that greater democratic practices can emerge from productive contestation. This book brings to bear tough questions about the trade-offs associated with economic growth and conflicting values around human dignity - questions that are very salient today, as citizens around the globe contemplate the types of democratic and economic systems that might better prepare us for tomorrow"--

Abstract: "Endangered species conservation is a critical challenge for sustainable development. Although serious attempts are being made to reverse current trends, many species and their crucial habitats continue to be degraded and lost at alarming rates. Various international agreements, notably the venerable Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Flora and Fauna (CITES), have aimed to regulate trade in listed species through the development of national frameworks and international collaborative measures. Abstract: "Prosociality is a cornerstone of a humane, harmonious, and flourishing society. This handbook details how prosociality develops, what factors underlie its growth, and how it can be nurtured in children and adolescents across different social contexts. It aims to inform and assist researchers, students, practitioners, caregivers, and policy makers"--
Abstract: Prosociality is a multifaceted concept referring to the many ways in which individuals care about and benefit others. Human prosociality is foundational to social harmony, happiness, and peace; it is therefore essential to understand its underpinnings, development, and cultivation. This handbook provides a state-of-the-art, in-depth account of scientific, theoretical, and practical knowledge regarding prosociality and its development. Its thirty chapters, written by international researchers in the field, elucidate key issues, including: the development of prosociality across infancy, childhood, adolescence, and beyond; the biological, cognitive, emotional, and motivational mechanisms that underlie and influence prosociality; how different socialization agents and social contexts can affect children's prosociality; and intervention approaches aimed at cultivating prosociality in children and adolescents. This knowledge can benefit researchers, students, practitioners, and policy makers seeking to nurture socially responsible, caring youth

Abstract: "This book grew out of a conference organized in 2018 to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Garrett Hardin's The Tragedy of the Commons, one of the the most cited articles of the 20th century. The conference was less a celebration of the substance of Hardin's essay than an acknowledgment of how it has shaped a half decade of research and theory. The conference, held at Georgetown University's Law Center in Washington D.C., brought together nearly fifty researchers from over twenty different nations to present their research on a wide variety of interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary perspectives on the "commons." The scope and depth of research presented at this conference could hardly have been imagined by Garrett Hardin when he published his essay in 1968. Nor could he have imagined that the first woman to win the Nobel Prize in Economic Science, Elinor Ostrom, would debunk the central assumption underlying his famous essay- that shared resources must be either privatized or heavily regulated in order to prevent their depletion. In many ways, however, Ostrom revived what might have been a waning theory and field by setting in motion a whole new line of inquiry and research empirically demonstrating the variety of ways that resource users and communities come together to cooperatively utilize and sustainably manage shared resources"--

This book includes diverse contributions from a global context relating to donor conception and donor-linked families, giving it both international and interdisciplinary appeal"--
Abstract: How are siblings who were conceived using the same sperm or egg donor making connections in the absence of legal support? What is it like to discover you are part of a 50+ donor sibling group? How are donor conceived adults using new technologies to connect with genetic family and explore their identity? This edited collection considers the donor linking experiences of donor conceived adults and children, recipient parents, and donors in a global context. It includes contributions from legal academics, social workers, sociologists, psychologists, and policy makers who work in the assisted conception field. As a result, it will be of particular interest to scholars of reproductive law, sociology, and digital media and reproductive technologies. It will also engage those following the debate around donor linking and the use of do-it-yourself technologies, including direct-to-consumer genetic testing and social media

Abstract: This Element presents and critically discusses video-mediated communication by combining theories and empirical methods of multimodal studies and translanguaging. Since the Covid-19 pandemic gained momentum, vidoe-based interactions have become more and more ingrained in private and public lives, to the point of being fully incorporated in a wide range of community practices in personal, work, and educational environments. The meaning making of video communication results from the complex, situationally based, and culturally influenced and interlaced components of different semiotic resources and practices, gaze behaviour, proxemics and kinesics patterns, as well as forms of embodied interaction. The Element aims at unpacking these resources and at interpreting how they make meanings, in order to improve and encourage active and responsible participation in the current digital scenarios--back cover

Abstract: The book delineates the role and place of the Western scientific discourse which occupied an important place in the colonization of India. During the colonial period, science became one of the foundations of Indian modernity and the nation-state. Gradually, the educated Indians sought to locate modern scientific ideas and principles within Indian culture and adopted those for the economic regeneration of the country. The discursive terrain of the history of science, especially in the context of a society with a very long and complex past, is bound to be replete with numerous debates on its nature and evolution, its changing contours, its complex civilizational journey, and finally, the enormous impact it has on our own life and time. The book offers a useful introduction to science, society, and government interface in the Indian context

Abstract: Volume II surveys the history of fashion from the nineteenth-century to the present day. Covering the period beginning with mass industry and ending with calls for sustainability, this volume challenges the meaning of modernity and modernism from a global perspective and reflects on important scholarship that has changed our understanding of the relationship between fashion and colonialism. Empires shifted and new powers rose, with fashion marking and contending with this change. The volume concludes with a critical view of fashion and globalisation, and explores the deep connections between the fashion industry, the global economy, and the politics of production and wearing in the contemporary world

Abstract: "This completely revised edition provides a synthesis of the forces that shaped the evolution of the human growth pattern, the biocultural factors that direct its expression, the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that regulate individual development, and the biomathematical approaches needed to analyze and interpret human growth. After covering the history, philosophy and biological principles of human development, the book turns to the evolution of the human life cycle. Later chapters explore the physiological, environmental and cultural reasons for population variation in growth, and the genetic and endocrine factors that regulate individual development. Using numerous historical and cultural examples, Social-Economic- Political-Economic forces are also discussed. A new chapter introduces controversial concepts of community effects and strategic growth adjustments, and the author then integrates all this information into a truly interactive biocultural model of human development. This remains the primary text for students of human growth in anthropology, psychology, public health and education. Barry Bogin is Professor Emeritus of Biological Anthropology, Loughborough University, UK and Professor Emeritus of Anthropology, University of Michigan-Dearborn, USA. He has expertise in human physical growth and development, nutritional ecology, evolutionary biology, Maya people, and human adaptation. The focus of his research is to explain how social, economic, political and emotional forces influence human physical development. Abstract: "This book answers one of the most critical questions of our time, does the vast connectivity afforded by mobile and social media lead to more personal connection with one another? It offers an evidence-based account of the role of technology in close relationships that confronts such pressing questions as where face-to-face communication belongs in this digital age, whether social media is harmful to our well-being, and how online communication spills-over into our offline communication and relationships. Each chapter explores the positive and negative influences of media on relationships, coalescing into a balanced assessment of how technological advancement has altered our connections with each other. By zeroing in on communication with the most important people in our lives and tracing the changes in computer-mediated communication over time, Relating Through Technology focuses the conversation about media on its use in our everyday lives and relationships"--

Abstract: "Archaeology, Nation, and Race is a must-read book for students of archaeology and adjacent fields. It demonstrates how archaeology and concepts of antiquity have shaped, and have been shaped by colonialism, race, and nationalism. Structured as a lucid and lively dialogue between two leading scholars, the volume compares modern Greece and modern Israel -- two prototypical and influential cases -- where archaeology sits at the very heart of the modern national imagination. Exchanging views on the foundational myths, moral economies, and racial prejudices in the field of archaeology and beyond, Hamilakis and Greenberg explore topics such as the colonial origins of national archaeologies, the crypto-colonization of the countries and their archaeologies, the role of archaeology as a process of purification, and the racialization and "whitening" of Greece and Israel and their archaeological and material heritage. They conclude with a call for decolonization and the need to forge alliances with subjugated communities and new political movements"--

Abstract: "This book investigates how citizens who have differences and disagreements ought to relate to one another in a liberal democracy. Specifically, this book advances a metaphor of citizenship that I call 'role-based constitutional fellowship.' Role-based constitutional fellowship, I argue, is a desirable way for citizens to relate to one another in conditions of modern pluralism, where multiple races, ethnicities, religions, and economic statuses exist ('difference') and where citizens adhere to and pursue competing political interests, creeds, and objectives ('disagreement'). Under role-based constitutional fellowship, citizens share a sense that they are united in a common aim and that they are largely committed to doing what is necessary to pursue that aim - that they are fellows. I describe this sense of fellowship as constitutional and role-based:"--

Abstract: "Paul Butler considers NWA's 1988 song, "Fuck tha Police," as an invitation to think about putting the police on trial for crimes against African Americans. It examines the resonance of "Fuck tha Police" over time, up to and including the George Floyd inspired protests. It will also use the song to analyze how civilians should feel about cops in a democracy. Are they a positive good, as many white people might suggest, a necessary evil, as some people of color might suggest, or an unnecessary evil, as suggested by the "defund the police" movement? Butler also will explore the meaning of the trial metaphor in the song - what would it mean for African Americans to put the police on trial? What would be the crime and the appropriate punishment?"--

Abstract: "The Agricultural Revolution - including the domestication of plants and animals in the Near East --- that occurred 10,500 years ago ended millions of years of human existence in small, mobile, egalitarian communities of hunters-gatherers. This Neolithic transformation led to the formation of sedentary communities that produced crops such as wheat, barley, peas, lentils, chickpeas and flax and domesticated range of livestock, including goats, sheep, cattle and pigs. All of these plants and animals still play a major role in the contemporary global economy and nutrition. This agricultural revolution also stimulated the later development of the first urban centres. This volume examines the origins and development of plant domestication in the Ancient Near East, along with various aspects of the new Man-Nature relationship that characterizes food-producing societies. It demonstrates how the rapid, geographically localized, knowledge-based domestication of plants was a human initiative that eventually gave rise to Western civilizations and the modern human condition"--

Abstract: "we describe the 'wicked' global property problem of homeless squatting on empty land or in empty properties and outline some key themes explored in the book. We reflect on the nature of squatting as a property problem; and introduce the concept of 'scale', which we deploy throughout the book to describe the dynamic nature of state responses to squatting. We outline the importance of seeing 'the state' in the analyses of squatting and other property problems, through its interactions with individuals, interactions with other state-bodies, and interactions with its territory, and interactions with its own institutions. Finally, we set out the structure and approach followed in the book, including reference to five primary jurisdictions: the U.S., Ireland, Spain, South Africa and England and Wales"--

Abstract: This collection of first-person accounts from legendary social psychologists tells the stories behind the science and offers unique insight into the development of the field from the 1950s to the present. One Pillar, the grandson of a slave, was inspired by Kenneth Clark. Yet when he entered his PhD program in the 1960s, he was told that race was not a variable for study. Other pillars faced first-hand a type of sexism that was hardly subtle, as when women were not permitted into the faculty dining room. Still others have lived through a tremendous diversification of social psychology, not only in the United States but also in Europe and Asia, that characterizes the field today. Together these stories, always witty and sometimes emotional, form a mosaic of the field as a whole--its legends, what drew them into the field, their theories and research, their relationships with one another, and their sense of where social psychology is headed

Abstract: "In late 1821, Jiang Qishun from Longli county of Guizhou province, coerced (bixie) his daughter-in-law Jiang Yuan Shi into incestuous intercourse. They "renewed their affair" (xujian) once afterwards. Jiang Qishun's son became aware of this sexual liaison when he ran into a flirtatious chat between his father and his wife. He forced his wife into admitting guilt, beat her, and moved with her to a separate residence. He threatened his wife that he would kill her if he once more found her having intercourse with his father. He did not dare to report the incident to the authorities, however. From that time on, Jiang Yuan Shi repented (huiguo), and refused to see her father-in-law (bi bu jianmian). To remove the thorn from his side, Jiang Qishun arranged for five men to forcibly take his son to the county court so that he could have his son punished for rebellious behavior. Jiang Qishun's son resisted arrest and died from his injuries. His death was reported to the authorities by Jiang Qishun as a death in affray committed by an unknown party. After Jiang Yuan Shi overheard her father-in-law drunkenly confessing that he had orchestrated her husband's death to facilitate further sexual contact with her, she killed him to vent her hatred. She tried to hang herself to avoid punishment, but she was saved by her neighbors"--

Abstract: "On 18 December 2019, a young woman by the name of Itō Shiori stepped outside the Tokyo District Court holding up a banner reading "victory" (shōso). The court had ruled that Itō had been assaulted by Yamaguchi Noriyuki, a prominent journalist, who would be punished for his crime. This was a significant result given that Japan's sex crime laws do not consider consent; instead, they require evidence of violence and intimidation-which can be difficult to successfully litigate. But with this case the fact that the court had found her "highly trustworthy" marked new ground, bringing Itō to express hope that her case would instigate a change in the law.1 A few months later, Time magazine listed her as one of the 100 most influential people in the world for her contribution to Japan's #MeToo movement. While Itō's courage was indeed in part inspired by the global reverberations of what had begun under that hashtag, the critique of sexual and gender relations in Japan has a much longer history"--

Abstract: "As eighteenth-century historians have made the 'global turn,' portions of Atlantic history have received more attention than others. Studies of trade, empire, and state-building have proliferated, but the interconnected histories of resistance against that world's greatest concentrations of power remain disproportionally overlooked. This book aims to be the first to demonstrate the rich web of interrelations between the increasingly inclusive and cosmopolitan social movements of the Age of Revolution. Liberty and rights, concepts previously restricted to certain nations and privileged groups, became potentially applicable to anyone, anywhere. Only low barriers existed between movements and countries: indeed, many activists desired the reduction of borders, boundaries, and old hatreds to right past abuses. Exuberant hopes spread that the political, economic, class, religious, racial, national, and other Old Regime barriers could be abolished - perhaps quickly"--

Abstract: "The series provides unique perspectives on the way globalization is radically altering the study, discipline, and practice of law. Featuring innovative books in this growing field, the series explores those bodies of law which are becoming global in their application, and the newly emerging interdependency and interaction of different legal systems. It covers all major branches of the law and includes work on legal theory, history, and the methodology of legal practice and jurisprudence under conditions of globalization. Offering a major platform on global law, these books provide essential reading for students and scholars of comparative, international, and transnational law"--

Abstract: "Liberia's official seal captures competing contexts colliding and co-mingling. It consists of a shield with an idyllic image of a passenger ship seen from the shore approaching new territory. An invisible, straight line connects the ship with an inviting palm tree jutting out of the earth. Its beak carrying a scroll conveying peace and freedom, a white dove hovers on the horizon. Beaming rays from a half-exposed sun appear in the background to complete the allegory of newness and discovery. In the foreground of the shield, on lush, green grass, lie a shovel dug into the earth and a plough representing the dignity of hard labour primarily from subsistence agriculture. Above the shield is a scroll proudly proclaiming Liberia's national motto: The Love of Liberty Brought Us Here. This pictorial symbolises Africa meeting its diasporas, yet it depicts the exploits of only a small fraction of Liberia's population at independence in the mid-nineteenth century-black transatlantic migrants who championed civilisation, Christianity, and commerce as their triple heritage-and even less so now, almost 200 years later in a twenty-first century post-war period."

Abstract: "Since the late twentieth century, multicultural reforms to benefit minorities have swept through Latin America, however, in Colombia ethno-racial inequality remains rife. "Becoming Heritage" evaluates how heritage policies affected the Afro-Colombian community of San Basilio de Palenque after it was proclaimed by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008. Although the designation partially delivered on its promise of multicultural inclusion, it also created ethno-racial exclusion and conflict among groups within the Palenquero community. The new forms of power, knowledge, skills and values created to safeguard heritage exacerbated political, social, symbolic and economic inequalities among Palenqueros, and did little to ameliorate the harsh realities of living and dying in Palenque. Bringing together broader discussions on race, nation and inclusion in Colombia, "Becoming Heritage" reveals that inequality in Palenque is not only a result of Black Colombians' uneven access to resources; it is enforced through heritage politics, expertise and governance. Maria Fernanda Escallón is Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Oregon. Her work has received support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Fulbright Program and the Mellon Foundation. Before pursuing doctoral studies, she worked in sustainable development and heritage policy-making in Colombia"--

Abstract: "The Thrust of the Book Experts increasingly have a more central role on all levels of public governance. As holders of expert knowledge, they are trusted to provide certainty and answers in the face of increased complexity, interdependence and the fast-changing pace of life.Experts' claim to authoritative certainty enables them to be frequently involved and consulted by policy-makers. Their importance has increased as policy-making has become more complex and intense. Yet we cannot turn to one single definition of an expert. Experts constitute a highly heterogenous group, including in-house specialists, public interest stakeholders, lobbyists, and academics. This diverse group possesses specialised and technical knowledge across a wide range of policy fields or legislative instruments"--

Abstract: "Bruno Tesch was tried, found guilty, and executed for his company's production and sale of the Zyklon B gas used in Nazi Germany's extermination camps. Tesch was not alone. More than 300 economic actors faced prosecution for crimes against humanity during the Holocaust. This book examines those trials and subsequent judicial and non-judicial (truth commission) efforts up to the present to hold economic actors accountable for complicity in gross violations of human rights during armed conflict and authoritarian rule. It probes what these accountability efforts are, why they take place, and when, where , and how they unfold. It also explores obstacles blocking accountability efforts, particularly business veto power and weak international law. The book uses an original oneof- its-kind Corporate Accountability and Transitional Justice database to develop its argument. It claims that the accountability processes underway around the world constitute "accountability from below," a kind of Archimedes' Lever in which the right tools in weak hands can lift weighty international human rights"--

Abstract: "Much research has documented concepts related to the balanced life in the literatures of organizational/industrial psychology and human resource management. These concepts include work-life balance, work-family conflict, work-family interference, and work-family interface (see literature reviews of various concepts related to work-life balance by Allen et al., 2000; Bulger & Fisher, 2012; Byron, 2005; Casper et al., 2007; Danna & Griffin, 1999; Eby et al., 2005; Eby, Maher, & Butts, 2010; Greenhaus & Allen 2011; Kalliath & Brough, 2008; Kossek & Ozeki, 1998; Lee & Sirgy, 2017; McNall, Nicklia, & Masuda, 2010; Sirgy & Lee, 2016, 2017; Sirgy et al., 2008; Yasbek, 2004). In the literature on subjective well-being and quality of life, only a few studies were found that specifically addressed the concept of life balance. For example, Diener, Ng, and Tov (2008) reported a study involving a representative sample from around the world to assess people's affect balance (positive versus negative affect) on the previous day and the various activities they had engaged in. The study found that the most popular activity that most people engaged in was socializing with family and friends. In this context, the study also found a decreasing marginal utility of this type of activity. That is, to ensure an optimal level of life satisfaction, people attempted to engage in a variety of activities because satisfaction from one type of activity diminishes in time. Sheldon and Niemiec (2006) demonstrated that life balance is achieved not only by the fulfillment of psychological needs (needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness) but a balanced effect among the satisfaction of these needs"--

Abstract: "The aims of this volume are to rethink the history of social rights and, in doing so, help develop a historiography that speaks to the broader fields of human rights scholarship and practice. It is only very recently that a critical historiography on social rights has started to emerge, but it has yet to displace deeply rooted assumptions underpinning historical interpretations. These assumptions have, unfortunately, led to a number of distortions and misconceptions about the substance of these rights, their origins and their historical trajectories. There is a record to set straight before we can start re-imagining a more nuanced account of the long history of social rights, and this opening chapter tries to do that. First, it addresses how social rights have been misconstrued - both by sympathisers and sceptics. Second, it lays out a new approach to studying the long history of social rights, one in which the question of duties and obligations is central. Third, it presents the volume's three-prong structure and contents, which cover the medieval period to the present and span the globe. Taken together, the chapters of this volume seek to reshape the historiography of rights by examining the role and significance of social rights within it. They also explore the relation of these rights to questions about freedom, justice, equality and dignity in global history"--

Abstract: "What makes a neo-Nazi become a convinced anti-fascist or a radical left-winger become a devout Salafist? How do they manage to fit into their new environment and gain acceptance as a former enemy? The people featured in this book made highly puzzling journeys, first venturing into extremist milieus and then deciding to switch to the opposite side. By using their extraordinary life stories and their own narratives, this book provides the first in-depth analysis of how and why people move between seemingly opposing extremist environments that can sometimes overlap and influence each other. It aims to understand how these extremists manage to convince their new group that they can be trusted, which also allows us to dive deep into the psychology of extremism and terrorism. This fascinating work will be of immense value to those studying radicalization and counter-radicalization in terrorism studies, social psychology, and political science"--

Abstract: "Investigating sites in colonial and postcolonial Calcutta, this book considers the wider politics and consequences of the modalities that both produce and regulate the street. It situates political economy as belonging not just to the domain of the government, the law, the planner's apparatus but parallelly to the domain of public action on the street. It studies, primarily, city-making by popular passions and public action on the streets. The book looks at the streets in motion through the eyes of the colonial and postcolonial city planners and of squatters who obstruct the movement of pedestrians and traffic. It qualifies the dialectic between the planner and the crowd by factoring in the aspect of city-planning being shaped by crowd action. The planner reorganizes demography through the building of thoroughfares while crowds shape planning by different varieties of occupation-occupation as community (authoritarian: Hindu aggregation of space through communal riots) and occupation as class (democratic: counter-pedestrianism of the street vendors). It thus presents an understanding of the social production of motion"--

Abstract: "This book examines various expressions of the utopian imagination, understood broadly as encompassing both better and worse visions of the future. In so doing, it focuses on the most pressing challenge of our times: how to inhabit a climate-changed world. Its key assumption is that tackling such a complex problem inevitably gives rise to utopian ideas and projects. The book tracks these forms of social dreaming across two domains - political theory as well as speculative fiction - so as to realize the following objectives: first, to uncover the key eutopian and dystopian tendencies in contemporary debates around the Anthropocene; and second, to provide orientation for our planetary existence on the basis of which a political theory of radical transformation, avoiding both fatalism and wishful thinking, may emerge. By juxtaposing theoretical interventions, from Bruno Latour to the members of the Dark Mountain collective, with fantasy and science fiction texts by N. K. Jemisin, Kim Stanley Robinson and Margaret Atwood, the book argues that the current desire for other ways of being and living can be educated in vastly different and frequently conflicting ways"--
