    Kurzfassung: Im Gegensatz zu Kunst gilt Kitsch als aufdringlich und wenig reflexiv. Doch ist diese Entgegensetzung nicht zu einfach gedacht? Könnte es nicht zahlreiche Zwischenstufen der Reflexivität geben? Thomas Küpper geht diesen Fragen nach und diskutiert dazu verschiedene Positionen aus Literatur, Philosophie, Film und Fernsehen, von Walter Benjamin bis André Rieu. Dabei zeigt er auf, dass Kitsch bestimmte Formen von Reflexivität braucht, um dem Publikum heile Welten, große Gefühle und kleine Fluchten bieten zu können: Wie beim Fiktionspakt im Sinne von Samuel Taylor Coleridge geht das Publikum einen Pakt mit dem Kitsch ein.

    Kurzfassung: "Postfeminism in Context argues that 'postfeminism', as a critical term, has been too often deployed in ways which fail to account for historical and cultural specificity. Through an analysis across Australian popular culture across three decades - chick lit novels; 'dramedy' television shows; women's magazines; YouTube vlogs; self-help manuals; and newspapers - we find, not the simple disavowal of feminism commonly seen to constitute postfeminist media culture, but a much more complicated, and in many ways more hopeful, picture. Rather than seeing popular culture's attempts to make sense of feminism as inevitably limited or politically reactionary, as is common, our analysis foregrounds the tensions, contradictions and ambiguities that have always been constitutive of postfeminism. Building upon recent scholarship which questions the critical efficacy of postfeminism, we argue that in Australian media, rather than being seen as a thinly veiled form of antifeminism, postfeminism is best conceptualised as a form of popular feminism - marked by both constraints and possibilities. Inevitably, given its transnational nature, we do find some of the core postfeminist tropes, themes, and narratives circulating in Australian popular culture, but that is not all we find. Ultimately, we conclude that Australian postfeminism represents a transitional stage between second wave feminism and the full emergence of a new, as yet unnamed form of feminist politics, which can operate within (and possibly resist) consumer capitalism and neoliberalism. Providing a nuanced account of the varied ways in which feminism has been taken up in Australian media, Postfeminism in Context is essential reading for those interested gender, feminism, and the politics of representation"--

Popular Responses to the End of Empire offers a new paradigm to understand decolonisation in Europe by showing how it was fundamentally a fluid process of fluxes and refluxes involving not only transfers of populations, ideas and socio-cultural practices across continents but also complex intra-European dynamics at a time of political convergence following the Treaty of Rome. Decolonisation was neither a process of sudden, rapid changes to European cultures nor one of cultural inertia, but a development marked by fluidity, movement, and dynamism. Rather than being a static process where Europe's (former) metropoles and their peoples 'at home' reacted to the end of empire 'out there', decolonisation translated into new realities for Europe's cultures, societies, and politics as flows, ebbs, fluxes, and cultural refluxes reshaped both former colonies and former metropoles. The volume's contributors set out a carefully crafted panorama of decolonisation's sequels in European popular culture by means of in-depth studies of specific cases and media, analysing the interwoven meaning, momentum, memory, material culture, and migration patterns of the end of empire across eight major European countries. The revised meaning of 'decolonisation' that emerges will challenge scholars in several fields, and the panorama of new research in the book charts paths for new investigations.     Kurzfassung: "Language is Politics discusses power relations between languages in the world, with a particular focus on English. Even though English is the most widely spoken and the most powerful language worldwide, it is not the lingua franca it is often supposed to be. The basic tenet of this book is that languages do not exist in the natural world; they are artefacts made by humans. The book debunks some common myths about language and it suggests that we should be more modest in our assumptions, for instance concerning the linguistic uniqueness of our own species. The author argues in favour of an ecological or balanced approach to language. This approach sees humans and other animals as part of the larger ecosystems that life depends on. As in nature, diversity is crucial to the survival of languages. The current linguistic ecosystem is out of balance and this book shows that education can help to restore the balance and cope with the challenges of a multilingual and multicultural world. With an ecological approach to language and a focus on narratives, personal language histories, this will be key reading for researchers and academics as well as students of English language and linguistics"--

    Kurzfassung: Die sogenannte Korean Wave und ihr eigenwilliger Charme haben in den letzten Jahren vor allem in Europa stark an Popularität gewonnen und stellen mit K-Pop, Animationsfilmen und sogenannten K-Dramas eines der wichtigsten Exportgüter Südkoreas dar. Dank des Internets und anderer Massenmedien werden zunehmend ein gemeinsames Bewusstsein und eine länderübergreifende Populärkultur geschaffen, die ein wichtiges Soft-Power-Instrument für Südkorea darstellen. Kim befasst sich in ihrer Arbeit eingehend mit der Bedeutung der Korean Wave für das kommunistisch geprägte Nordkorea, wo Inhalte aus dem Nachbarland meist im Verborgenen konsumiert werden müssen. Das dort vorherrschende hohe Maß an Verzicht und Disziplin stellt einen starken Kontrast zu den bunten und lebhaften Inhalten des Populärkulturphänomens dar, der das Verhältnis der nordkoreanischen Bevölkerung zum Nachbarland in Bezug auf soziale, kulturelle und politische Faktoren beeinflusst. Die vorherrschende Beliebtheit der Korean Wave und der daraus entstehenden Fankultur in Nordkorea ist damit ein bisher einzigartiges Beispiel dafür, wie eine gemeinsame Populärkultur als Soft-Power-Instrument in der Lage ist, bestehende Kultur- und Ländergrenzen zu erodieren, potenziell aufzubrechen und sogar Migrationswellen auszulösen.     Kurzfassung: 1963 kam der erste Kassettenrekorder auf den Markt: unscheinbar beige-grau, batteriebetrieben und so handlich, dass er in eine Manteltasche passte. In den Jahrzehnten danach eroberte die Kassette in einer stürmischen Erfolgsgeschichte den Alltag der Menschen - etwa als Mixtape, Demoband oder Sprachlernkassette. Eine Kassettenkultur entstand: Mit Walkman, Ghettoblaster und Autoradio waren die Medien plötzlich überall dabei. In einer kurzweiligen und unterhaltsamen Studie spürt Pia Fruth der Geschichte der Kassette aus verschiedenen Perspektiven nach. Mit der Auswertung neuer Quellen, die von internen Materialien der Firma Philips bis zu Zeitzeugen-Interviews reichen, schließt sie eine Lücke in der bisherigen Forschungsliteratur.
