    Abstract: This pioneering and innovative study challenges modern assumptions of what constitutes the political and the public in Renaissance thought. Offering gendered readings of a wide array of fifteenth- and sixteenth-century political thinkers, with a particular focus on the two prime thinkers of the early modern state, Niccolò Machiavelli and Jean Bodin, Anna Becker reconstructs a neglected but important classical tradition in political thought. Exploring how 'the political' was incorporated into a wide array of 'private' or 'apolitical' topics by early modern thinkers, Becker demonstrates how both republican and absolutist thinkers - the two poles which organise early modern political thought - relied on gendered justifications. In doing so, she reveals how the foundations of the modern state were significantly shaped by gendered concerns.

    Abstract: Large-scale comparative economic history of westernmost and easternmost Eurasia can be beneficial for the understanding of global history. It demonstrates the constraints to which all pre-industrial economies were subjected because of their dependence on organic natural resources but also the different ways in which the societies discussed dealt with those constraints. To provide a better understanding of this economy of limited possibilities, the final chapter of the book is devoted to the emergence of modern economic growth in Western Europe.

    Abstract: Balkan prehistory conjures up images of the Exotic and the Other in comparison with the better-known prehistory of Western Europe - often written in unfamiliar languages about lesser known places. Combined with the information revolution in archaeology, these factors have meant that no new synthesis of Old Europe has been written in the last 20 years. This has left a backlog of rich settlement data and object-rich landscapes which have rarely been presented in theoretically challenging ways. This material is an important, and greatly neglected, part of European prehistory.This research monograph is a synthesis of the archaeology of South East, Central and Eastern Europe over four millennia (7000 - 3000 BC). The varied cultural development of the region is treated as a mosaic of local prehistories, in which people responded to major change and, in at least two cases - the development of farming and metallurgy - profound structural change through modifications of all the dimensions of their identities. Informed by a gendered perspective, this book seeks to structure the Mesolithic, Neolithic and the Chalcolithic periods in terms of a nested set of identities - the person, the household, the settlement and the regional network. This book is intended for all those prehistorians who seek to expand their general knowledge of Old Europe, as well as undergraduates, postgraduates and specialists in Balkan prehistory. The book will also attract social anthropologists and sociologists with an interest in the creation and maintenance of nested social identities in the past.

It examines the various coping strategies religious refugees developed to deal with their marginalization and exclusion, and investigates the strategies deployed in various media to generate feelings of exclusion through models of social difference, that questioned the loyalty, values, and trust of "others".     Abstract: Der Sammelband untersucht - in Deutschland erstmalig - die Entwicklung von Korruptionspraktiken und -debatten von der Frühen Neuzeit bis in die Gegenwart. Die Fallstudien zeigen, wie sich die Definition und die Akzeptanz von Korruption und verwandten Handlungsmustern wandelten. In frühneuzeitlichen Kontexten waren diese offensichtlich und alltäglich. Staatliche Modernisierung und Verrechtlichung trugen ab dem 19. Jahrhundert auf einer normativen Ebene zur Trennung von Privatsphäre und Öffentlichkeit bei, verdrängten jedoch korrupte Praktiken nicht. Diese hatten weiterhin eine wichtige Funktion, sei es als Teil eines politischen Systems, sei es als Anlass für Auseinandersetzungen über Moral und politische Werte.     Abstract: This volume is a product of the 13th International Conference on Archaeological Prospection 2019, which was hosted by the Department of Environmental Science in the Faculty of Science at the Institute of Technology Sligo. The conference is held every two years under the banner of the International Society for Archaeological Prospection and this was the first time that the conference was held in Ireland. New Global Perspectives on Archaeological Prospection draws together over 90 papers addressing archaeological prospection techniques, methodologies and case studies from 33 countries across Africa, Asia, Australasia, Europe and North America, reflecting current and global trends in archaeological prospection. At this particular ICAP meeting, specific consideration was given to the development and use of archaeological prospection in Ireland, archaeological feedback for the prospector, applications of prospection technology in the urban environment and the use of legacy data.     Abstract: This volume offers the first, in-depth comparison of the Holocaust and new world slavery. Providing a reliable view of the relevant issues, and based on a broad and comprehensive set of data and evidence, Steven Katz analyzes the fundamental differences between the two systems and re-evaluates our understanding of the Nazi agenda. Among the subjects he examines are: the use of black slaves as workers compared to the Nazi use of Jewish labor; the causes of slave demographic decline and growth in different New World locations; the main features of Jewish life during the Holocaust relative to slave life with regard to such topics as diet, physical punishment, medical care, and the role of religion; the treatment of slave women and children as compared to the treatment of Jewish women and children in the Holocaust. Katz shows that slave women were valued as workers, as reproducers of future slaves, and as sexual objects, and that slave children were valued as commodities. For these reasons, neither slave women nor children were intentionally murdered. By comparison, Jewish slave women and children were viewed as the ultimate racial enemy and therefore had to be exterminated. These and

Ohne die Reduktion auf das Wesentliche, Exemplarische geht es nicht, bestimmte Aspekte des Ausstellungsnarrativs können eben nicht visualisiert werden. Solche gesellschaftlichen Unterscheidungen werden jedoch niemals isoliert wirksam. Soziale Kategorien wie Geschlecht, Ethnizität, sozialer Status oder das Alter einer Person sind ineinander verschränkt bzw. überkreuzen sich – und können daher auch gar nicht ohne ihre Wechselwirkungen untersucht werden. Diese Perspektive, die als »Intersektionsanalyse« inzwischen als sozialwissenschaftliches Paradigma gilt, wird in dem Band erstmals in vergleichender Perspektive auf die Frühe Neuzeit übertragen. Dem Programm einer »Historischen Intersektionsanalyse« folgend, fragen die dabei versammelten Fallstudien sowohl nach der Epochenspezifik sozialer Ungleichheiten als auch nach dem Wandel von Kategorien und deren Verschränkung. / »Entangled Differences« -- Social categories such as gender, ethnicity, status, and age do not exist in isolation, but rather are always interconnected. Als Studien- und Lehrbuch konzipiert, führen alle Beiträge eine intensive quellenkritische Analyse des Untersuchungsmaterials durch, das von der "Erklärung der Rechte der Frau" von Olympe de Gouge aus dem Jahre 1791 bis zum Rap-Song "Ahmet Gündüz" von Fresh Familee aus dem Jahre 1990/91 reicht.     Abstract: Historians have become increasingly interested in material culture as both a category of analysis and as a teaching tool. And yet the profession tends to be suspicious of things; words are its stock-in-trade. What new insights can historians gain about the past by thinking about things? A central object (and consequence) of modern warfare is the radical destruction and transformation of the material world. And yet we know little about the role of material culture in the history of war and forced displacement: objects carried in flight; objects stolen on battlefields; objects expropriated, reappropriated, and remembered.Objects of War illuminates the ways in which people have used things to grapple with the social, cultural, and psychological upheavals wrought by war and forced displacement. Chapters consider theft and pillaging as strategies of conquest; soldiers' relationships with their weapons; and the use of clothing and domestic goods by prisoners of war, extermination camp inmates, freed people, and refugees to make claims and to create a kind of normalcy.While studies of migration and material culture have proliferated in recent years, as have histories of the Napoleonic, colonial, World Wars, and postcolonial wars, few have focused on the movement of people and things in times of war across two centuries.     Abstract: In The Invention of Race in the European Middle Ages, Geraldine Heng questions the common assumption that the concepts of race and racisms only began in the modern era. Examining Europe's encounters with Jews, Muslims, Africans, Native Americans, Mongols, and the Romani ('Gypsies'), from the 12th through 15th centuries, she shows how racial thinking, racial law, racial practices, and racial phenomena existed in medieval Europe before a recognizable vocabulary of race emerged in the West. Analysing sources in a variety of media, including stories, maps, statuary, illustrations, architectural features, history, saints' lives, religious commentary, laws, political and social institutions, and literature, she argues that religion - so much in play again today - enabled the positing of fundamental differences among humans that created strategic essentialisms to mark off human groups and populations for racialized treatment. Her ground-breaking study also shows how race figured in the emergence of homo europaeus and the identity of Western Europe in this time

Als Indikator für eine neue Qualität und Virulenz des Antisemitismus kann jedoch nicht nur der islamistische Antisemitismus gesehen werden, sondern auch die Zunahme von Antisemitismus in politisch und sozial arrivierten Kreisen und Milieus. Mit Blick auf Polen, Tschechien, Russland, Bulgarien, Ungarn, Kroatien, die Slowakei sowie die Ukraine ethnografieren die Beiträge des Bandes diese Wiederentdeckung des Nationalen aus kulturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive. Sie beleuchten die Ursachen und Spezifika dieser aktuellen Entwicklungen in den postsozialistischen Ländern und gehen den Folgen für den europäischen Einigungsprozess nach.
    Abstract: In the last decades, historical myths have been revived in Eastern Europe: "Folk culture" or religious traditions contribute just as much to politics of national identity as do memorials of modern history, such as within the context of athletics or pop culture. Focusing on Poland, the Czech Republic, Russia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Croatia, Slovakia as well as Ukraine, the contributions found in this volume ethnographically explore this re-discovery of nationalism from the perspective of cultural studies. They illuminate the causes and specifics of these current developments in post-socialist countries and examine the consequences they have on the European process of unification.

    Abstract: This book examines social and medical responses to the disfigured face in early medieval Europe, arguing that the study of head and facial injuries can offer a new contribution to the history of early medieval medicine and culture, as well as exploring the language of violence and social interactions. Despite the prevalence of warfare and conflict in early medieval society, and a veritable industry of medieval historians studying it, there has in fact been very little attention paid to the subject of head wounds and facial damage in the course of war and/or punitive justice. The impact of acquired disfigurement —for the individual, and for her or his family and community—is barely registered, and only recently has there been any attempt to explore the question of how damaged tissue and bone might be treated medically or surgically. In the wake of new work on disability and the emotions in the medieval period, this study documents how acquired disfigurement is recorded across different geographical and chronological contexts in the period

    Abstract: "This book argues that the Indo-Europeanizing of Europe essentially began shortly before 1600 BC, when lands rich in natural resources were taken over by military forces from the Eurasian steppe and from southern Caucasia. First were the copper and silver mines (along with good harbors) in Greece, and the copper and gold mines of the Carpathian basin. By ca. 1500 BC other military men had taken over the amber shores of Scandinavia and the metalworking district of the southern Alps. These military takeovers offer the most likely explanations for the origins of the Greek, Keltic, Germanic and Italic subgroups of the Indo-European language family. Battlefield warfare and militarism, Robert Drews contends, were novelties ca. 1600 BC and were a consequence of the military employment of chariots. Current opinion is that militarism and battlefield warfare are as old as formal states, going back before 3000 BC. Another current opinion is that the Indo-Europeanizing of Europe happened long before 1600 BC. The 'Kurgan Theory' of Marija Gimbutas and David Anthony dates it from late in the fifth to early in the third millennium BC and explains it as the result of horse-riding conquerors or raiders coming to Europe from the steppe. Colin Renfrew's Archaeology and Language dates the Indo-Europeanizing of Europe to the seventh and sixth millennia BC, and explains it as a consequence of the spread of agriculture in a 'wave of advance' from Anatolia through Europe. Pairing linguistic with archaeological evidence Drews concludes that in Greece and Italy, at least, no Indo-European language could have arrived before the second millennium BC"...Provided by publisher

    Abstract: Mit der Erschließung der Ozeane und der Entdeckung Amerikas begann die Globalisierung in der Frühen Neuzeit. Georg Jochum stellt dar, wie diese Entgrenzung der Welt, die in der Devise »Plus Ultra« ihren signifikanten Ausdruck fand, zum Basisparadigma der Moderne wurde. Der ambivalente Charakter der okzidentalen Zivilisation zwischen emanzipativer Weltoffenheit und kolonialer Weltbeherrschung hat hier seinen Ursprung. Auch die gegenwärtige ökologische Krise und die zunehmenden Spannungen in der Weltgesellschaft sind ferne Folgen dieser Entgrenzungsdynamik. Auf diese historische und zeitdiagnostische Analyse aufbauend werden Wege der Transformation hin zu einer zur reflexiven Selbstbegrenzung fähigen, nachhaltigeren Gesellschaft skizziert.

    Abstract: Minderheiten sind seit dem Beitritt des Deutschen Reiches zum Völkerbund (1926) ein zentraler Bestandteil der deutschen Außenpolitik. Ihnen kommt im Prozess der Europäisierung und der Auflösung nationaler Grenzen eine wichtige Rolle zu. Wie Minderheiten sich in Europa Gehör verschaffen können, ist in hohem Maße durch die Kulturpolitik der Nationalstaaten und der EU bestimmt. Die Autoren und Autorinnen des Bandes richten ihren Blick auf die Anfänge einer modernen Minderheitenpolitik seit der Weimarer Republik, in welcher der Begriff der nationalen Minderheiten zuerst zu einem Gegenstand rechtlicher wie politischer Debatten und zu einer gesellschaftlichen "Kategorie der Moderne" wurde. Die Gründung des Völkerbundes, die Legitimierung des Selbstbestimmungsrechts der Völker und die Etablierung des Minderheitenschutzes auf internationaler Ebene bildeten den Ausgangspunkt für diese Entwicklungen. Zeitgenössische volkskundliche Untersuchungen trugen neben vielen anderen Wissenschaften maßgeblich zur Kodifizierung des Konzeptes Minderheiten sowie zur Fremd- und Selbstethnisierung bei.

    Abstract: Im 20. Jahrhundert wurden in Europa mehr Menschen vertrieben und umgesiedelt als jemals zuvor in der Geschichte der Menschheit. Allerdings handelt es sich bei solchen Zwangsmigrationen weder um ein ausschließlich modernes noch um europäisches Phänomen: In fast allen Teilen der Welt ereigneten sich Umsiedlungen schon vor 1800. In diesem Band werden erstmals Beispiele aus ganz unterschiedlichen Weltregionen diskutiert und miteinander verglichen. Die Lektüre macht deutlich, wie die Umsiedlung von Bevölkerungsgruppen in verschiedenen Kontexten als politisches Mittel eingesetzt wurde. Wer die europäischen Zwangsumsiedlungen der Moderne verstehen will, sollte auch deren Vorgeschichten innerhalb und außerhalb Europas kennen.
