    Abstract: Die Schwulenbewegung in der DDR der 1970er und 1980er Jahre war in Ursprung und Entwicklung immer ostdeutsch und deutsch-deutsch zugleich. Teresa Tammer beschreibt die Bedeutung der Teilung Deutschlands insbesondere für den Schwulenaktivismus in der DDR, aber auch in West-Berlin und der Bundesrepublik seit Anfang der 1970er Jahre; sie analysiert eingehend die Selbstbehauptungsstrategien der Ostdeutschen, zu denen Selbstdarstellungen, Aneignungen, Positionierungen und Forderungen gegenüber unterschiedlichen Adressaten gehörten. Zudem untersucht sie die Netzwerke und Transfers zwischen ost- und westdeutschen Schwulenaktivisten. Die Akteure in der DDR mussten stets balancieren zwischen Anpassung und Auflehnung sowie zwischen verschiedenen Zugehörigkeiten, etwa zur DDR und einer transnationalen Bewegung oder zwischen Staat und Kirche. Teresa Tammer erzählt eine multiperspektivische Geschichte der DDR-Schwulenbewegung, die eingebettet ist in die deutsch-deutsche Geschichte, aber auch in transnationale und globale Prozesse, und die über den Mauerfall hinausreicht
    Abstract: The GDR gay rights movement of the 1970s and 1980s was always both East German and German-German. The actors in the GDR performed a balancing act between adaptation and rejection, and between different feelings of belonging, e.g., between the GDR and a transnational movement, and between state and church.     Abstract: Die vorliegende kumulative Arbeit untersucht, inwiefern lokale Aushandlungsprozesse im Umgang mit extrem rechten Mobilisierungen zu deren Normalisierung beitragen. Die Studie adressiert zwei Forschungsdesiderate: Erstens externalisieren viele Beiträge die extrem Rechte von städtischen Demokratien. Folglich ist die Literatur nicht in der Lage zu erfassen, wie extrem rechte Agenden und Ideologien innerhalb lokaler partizipativer Prozesse in liberalen Demokratien normalisiert werden. Zweitens sind die Akteure und Prozesse, welchen diesen lokalen Aushandlungen zugrunde liegen, nicht ausreichend untersucht. Um diese Lücken zu schließen, verbindet die Studie Theoriestränge aus der Urban Governance - Literatur mit sozialwissenschaftlichen Debatten über den Aufstieg der extrem Rechten. Der methodische Rahmen der Arbeit besteht aus einem qualitativen Forschungsdesign in Form einer explorativen Einzelfallstudie in der Stadt Cottbus. Die Analyse zeigt, dass das Narrativ der Externalisierung in dreierlei Hinsicht eine falsche Dichotomie zwischen der extremen Rechten und lokalen Aushandlungsprozessen schafft: Erstens ignoriert es, dass deliberative Prozessen zwar das Versprechen auf Demokratisierung innewohnt, dieses aber durch bestehende gesellschaftliche Machtverhältnisse durchkreuzt wird, die Näherböden für autoritäre Mobilisierung bieten können. Zweitens übersieht es die Verflechtung zwischen Rassismus und den städtischen Institutionen, die auf extrem rechte Mobilisierung reagieren, und oftmals Anknüpfungspunkte für extrem rechte Ideologien bieten. Drittens wird argumentiert, dass dies auf den lokalen Staat als umkämpftes Terrain hinweist.
    Abstract: Englische Version: This doctoral dissertation explores to what extent local negotiations of far-right contestations contribute to the latter’s normalisation. The project is prompted by the crux that even though the central role of cities and local participatory planning processes in countering far-right contestations is widely acknowledged, far-right contestations have hardly been challenged. It seeks to address two scholarly blind spots: First, mainstream accounts engaging with the question of how municipalities deal with far-right contestations have largely externalised the far right from urban democracy. Consequently, the current literature is not able to grasp how far-right agendas and ideologies can indeed be normalised within local participatory processes. Second, the actors and processes involved in the local negotiation of far-right contestations remain understudied. To fill these gaps, the cumulative dissertation connects discussions on urban governance with recent debates on the rise of the far right. The methodological framework of this thesis consists of a qualitative, explorative single-case study in the city of Cottbus, Germany. The analysis reveals that the liberal narratives of externalisation create a false dichotomy between far-right contestations and local negotiations in liberal democracies in a threefold way. First, they ignore how far-right contestations can be strengthened within traditional deliberative processes, as their promise of equal participation for all citizens is juxtaposed with the inability of such processes to re-negotiate the power relations aggravating the social inequalities giving rise to the far right in the first place. Second, by externalising the divisiveness propagated by far-right contestations, they overlook the interconnectedness between racism and the institutions governing cities, which offers points of contact for far-right ideology.     Abstract: "The Politics of the Eurogroup provides an intriguing look inside the euro crisis and the secretive forum of finance ministers that came to dominate it. The history of the European Union is a history of crises and the leaps of integration they triggered. As the pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and global power competition are clouding the prospects of the European economies, the member states are looking for solutions. Yet they find their options highly constrained by the economic and political realities created in the decade of the euro crisis. This book fuses a critical political economy perspective on structural relations within the Economic and Monetary Union with a power-based approach to its institutions. It explains why a political project of European austerity emerged from the Eurogroup and side-lined alternative policies, with repercussions still felt today. The author introduces a series of interviews with key decision-makers - ministers, central bankers, EU officials - as well as leaked audio recordings from Eurogroup meetings to give an authentic report of the power struggles between finance ministers. The book retraces how the Eurogroup rose to prominence in the crisis and how a few northern countries - led by the German and Dutch finance ministries - were able to exploit the group's informal processes to shape the Economic and Monetary Union to their advantage.     Abstract: Global Labour History has rapidly gained ground as a field of study in the 21st century, attracting interest in the Global South and North alike. Scholars derive inspiration from the broad perspective and the effort to perceive connections between global trends over time in work and labour relations, incorporating slaves, indentured labourers and sharecroppers, housewives and domestic servants. Casting this sweeping analytical gaze, this book discusses the core concepts ‘capitalism’ and ‘workers’, and refines notions such as ‘coerced labour’, ‘household strategies’ and ‘labour markets’. It explores in new ways the connections between labourers in different parts of the world, arguing that both ‘globalisation’ and modern labour management originated in agriculture in the Global South and were only later introduced in Northern industrial settings. It reveals that 19th-century chattel slavery was frequently replaced by other forms of coerced labour, and it reconstructs the laborious 20th-century attempts of the International Labour Organisation to regulate labour standards supra-nationally. The book also pays attention to the relational inequality through which workers in wealthy countries benefit from the exploitation of those in poor countries. The final part addresses workers’ resistance and acquiescence: why collective actions often have unanticipated consequences; why and how workers sometimes organise massive flights from exploitation and oppression; and why ‘proletarian revolutions’ took place in pre-industrial or industrialising countries and never in fully developed capitalist societies.

Dabei zeigen sich je nach politischem System deutliche Abweichungen: Autokratien nutzen Proxys als "Puffer" gegenüber Demokratien, um für ihre Taten nicht belangt zu werden. Für Demokratien dagegen können Berichte privater IT-Unternehmen "Täter-Wissen" kommunizieren sowie Handlungsdruck infolge politischer Verantwortungszuweisungen reduzieren.

    Abstract: This book assesses the impact of the May 2019 European elections as well as the Covid-19 pandemic on the EU’s politics, institutions, and policies. Special attention is paid to the impact of these events on the different political forces as well as on the Union’s institutional balance, its priorities and the reform of its budget and policies. Because of the many post-electoral uncertainties, the book also takes into account how the relations between the Parliament, the European Council and the new Commission have developed. Furthermore, it analyses the capacity of the von der Leyen Commission to implement an ambitious programme, especially in the context of an unfolding pandemic. The objective of this book is to study the 2019 electoral sequence (parliamentary elections, appointment of EU institutions leaders, investiture of the Commission, new legislative programme) and determine its influence on the main institutional and political challenges for the 2019-2024 legislature. In other words, the volume deals with the question of who holds the EU’s leadership after the 2019 elections and how it handles the 2020-2021 pandemic.     Abstract: Spätestens mit den Debatten zu einer zunehmenden Polarisierung der deutschen und anderer europäischer Gesellschaften rückt die Frage nach Prozessen der Radikalisierung in den Blick. Neben individuellen Radikalisierungen sind es vor allem gesellschaftliche Rahmenbedingungen, die für die Radikalisierung, manchmal sogar ganzer Gruppen, verantwortlich zeichnen. Im vorliegenden Buch werden unter Einbezug unterschiedlicher Perspektiven Prozesse der Radikalisierung und damit verbundenen Co-Radikalisierung auf rechtsextremer und muslimischer Seite untersucht und diskutiert. The first edition of this book contributed a comprehensive treatment of multiple aspects of the basic income debate.     Abstract: This open access book is the product of three years of academic research that has been carried out in the EU-funded Jean Monnet Network on “Post-Truth Politics, Nationalism and the Delegitimation of European Integration” since 2019. Drawing on the multidisciplinary expertise of the network’s members, the book explores the impact of the phenomenon of post-truth politics on European integration and the European Union. It places particular emphasis on how post-truth politics has played out in the public sphere and asks what impact the phenomenon has had on public deliberation, but reflects also on its implications for democracy in a wider sense. This book is primarily written for audiences with an interest in politics and policy making, including academics, policy makers and civil-society actors.     Abstract: The European Union (‘EU’) is promoting a suite of innovations in international economic regulation—among them, reforms for secure and sustainable investment, a comprehensive approach to the mutual recognition of professional qualifications, a viable carbon border adjustment mechanism, heightened intellectual property rights protection, the arm’s length principle in taxation, and an increased commitment to non-economic vales. Through a critical analysis of key regulations and policies, this volume explores the evolving architectures of international economic agreements in light of EU practice. A comprehensive analysis indicates that novelties are rooted in geoeconomic considerations, through which a fundamental shift is underway towards the adoption of comprehensive bilateral trade agreements. Whilst innovation has the potential to significantly harmonise cross-border regulatory frameworks, it can also trigger significant fractures, particularly when applied restrictively and asymmetrically. Arguably, the ‘Brussels effect’ will to a certain extent foster a progressive development of international economic regulation, while in some respects being constrained by the status quo of the international economic regime. This volume is part of the Jean Monnet project Third Country Engagement with EU Trade Policy led by the ANU Centre for European Studies at the Australian National University, and supported by the European Commission under the Erasmus+ actions. The project seeks to explore and improve understanding of the EU’s evolving trade policy and its implications for third countries, including Australia and countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

In ihrer Publikation untersucht Claudia Hülsken in einer qualitativen vergleichenden Studie die Funktionen der Jungen Union (CDU) und der Jusos (SPD) für die innerparteiliche Auswahl zukünftiger Berufspolitiker. Im ersten Teil der Arbeit wird die kollektive Rolle der beiden Jugendverbände am Beispiel der Kandidatenselektion zur Bundestagswahl 2013 in Nordrhein-Westfalen und Niedersachsen in den Blick genommen. Der zweite Teil untersucht die individuelle Bedeutung des Parteijugendengagements für politische Karrieren auf der Grundlage biografischer Interviews mit Landtags- und Bundestagsabgeordneten.     Abstract: Dieses Buch zielt darauf, die Bildstrategien bzw. die Visualisierung der rechtspopulistischen Ideologie der Partei Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) zu untersuchen. Ausgangslage der Analyse ist das Verständnis von der Ideologie des Rechtspopulismus als die antagonistische Beziehung zwischen dem nationalen Volk auf der einen Seite und den Eliten sowie den Fremden auf der anderen Seite definiert. Die rechtspopulistische Ideologie der AfD lässt sich in den Narrationen zu den Themen aus ihren Wahl- und Parteiprogrammen erkennen. In diesen Narrationen werden das nationale Volk einerseits und die Eliten sowie die Fremden andererseits mit bestimmten Eigenschaften konfrontativ gegenübergestellt. Anschließend werden sechs Grundmuster der kognitiven Eigen- und Fremdstereotype sowohl aus der Stereotypenforschung als auch aus den Konzepten der sozialen Diskriminierung entwickelt. Um diese Grundmuster auf der Bildebene analysieren zu können, werden visuelle Stereotype als Bildtypen aus der politischen Ikonografie definiert, die die Vorstellung über verallgemeinerbare Eigenschaften ganzer Menschengruppen repräsentieren. Die Methode der Bildtypenanalyse und die Methode der politischen Ikonografie und Ikonologie werden herangezogen, diese Bildtypen zu analysieren und damit die Bildstrategien der AfD freizulegen. Die Autorin Feng Yingyi arbeitet als Dozentin am Zentrum für Deutschland-Studien der Sichuan International Studies University in China.

    Abstract: Im Frühjahr 2023 gingen in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland die letzten Kernkraftwerke vom Netz. Es war das politisch beschlossene Ende einer Technologie, die vor rund 50 Jahren noch als unumstrittene Zukunftshoffnung zur Sicherung von Wachstum und Wohlstand gegolten hatte und dann als Gegenstand der Kernenergiekontroverse eine ganze Generation begleitet und teilweise sogar nachhaltig geprägt hatte. Christian von Falkenhausen unternimmt in diesem Buch den Versuch, anhand einer Multiple Streams Analyse der politischen Prozesse der Jahre 1975 bis 1997 zu zeigen, dass die Grundlagen für die späteren politischen Atomausstiege in dieser Frühphase gelegt wurden. Der Autor Christian von Falkenhausen arbeitet für einen Bundesverband in Berlin.

    Abstract: Seit dem Ersten Weltkrieg galten Massenkommunikation und Propaganda als integrale Faktoren des politischen und militärischen Geschehens. Damit wuchs der Bedarf an systematischer Expertise und wissenschaftlicher Erforschung. Während des Zweiten Weltkrieges und im Kalten Krieg wurde die Planung, Beobachtung und Analyse von Propaganda zu einem wichtigen Feld strategischer Wissensproduktion. Im Wege einer dreiseitig verflochtenen Wahrnehmungs- und Beziehungsgeschichte untersucht Benno Nietzel, welche Rolle Kommunikationsexperten und Wissenschaftler in der Propaganda dreier Länder spielten: in den Vereinigten Staaten, in Deutschland und der Sowjetunion. Verschiedene Akteursgruppen konkurrierten jeweils um Gehör, Einfluss und Zuständigkeiten auf dem Gebiet der Propaganda. Aus ihren Erfolgen und ihrem Scheitern ergibt sich eine alternative Geschichte von Verwissenschaftlichungsprozessen und Expertentum im 20. Jahrhundert, die von Ungleichzeitigkeiten, Gegenläufigkeiten und Widersprüchen gekennzeichnet ist

    Abstract: Wer unsere heutige Medienwirklichkeit verstehen will, kommt nicht umhin, sich mit den Technologien rund um Künstliche Intelligenz (KI) und Algorithmen auseinanderzusetzen. Folgerichtig hat sich in jüngerer Zeit innerhalb der Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften ein Forschungsstrang entwickelt, der diese Technologien - zumeist aus kritisch-interventionistischer Perspektive - ins Zentrum rückt. Die vorliegende Arbeit widmet sich dagegen "postkritisch" und "bottom-up" den gesellschaftlichen Selbstbeobachtungen im Hinblick auf die KI-Technologien im öffentlichen Diskurs und entwickelt für deren Erforschung das Programm einer Medienkulturrhetorik. Dieses Programm bringt Kulturwissenschaft und Rhetorik zusammen, um die Handlungsmöglichkeiten spätmoderner Subjekte im "KI-Zeitalter" zu ergründen, und wird im Rahmen einer empirischen Fallstudie zur massenmedialen Berichterstattung über KI und der Auseinandersetzung mit ebendieser in den sozialen Medien am Beispiel Facebook erprobt. Anspruch dieser Untersuchung ist es, sowohl einen Beitrag zur Weiterentwicklung kulturwissenschaftlicher Methodologie als auch für ein tieferes Verständnis unserer Kulturen zu leisten und dabei zugleich Anknüpfungspunkte für die (didaktische) Praxis zu bieten.

    Abstract: "Republicans and Democrats increasingly distrust, avoid, and wish harm upon those from the other party. To make matters worse, they also increasingly reside among like-minded others and are part of social groups that share their political beliefs. All of this can make expressing a dissenting political opinion hard. Yet digital and social media have given people new spaces for political discourse and community, and more control over who knows their political beliefs and who does not. With Democracy Lives in Darkness, Van Duyn looks at what these changes in the political and media landscape mean for democracy. She uncovers and follows a secret political organization in rural Texas over the entire Trump presidency. The group, which organized out of fear of their conservative community in 2016, has a confidentiality agreement, an email listserv and secret Facebook group, and meets in secret every month. By building relationships with members, she explores how and why they hide their beliefs and what this does for their own political behavior and for their community. Drawing on research from communication, political science, and sociology along with survey data on secret political expression, she finds that polarization has led even average partisans to hide their political beliefs from others. And although intensifying polarization will likely make political secrecy more common, she argues that this secrecy is not just evidence that democracy is hurting, but that it is still alive; that people persist in the face of opposition and that this matters if democracy is to survive"--

    Abstract: „Russland“ und „Feminismus“ scheinen eine fragliche Kombination zu sein. Russland ist eher für neopatriarchale Politik bekannt, die für Feminismus kaum Platz lässt. Doch in den letzten 15 Jahren ist in Russland eine feministische Basisbewegung entstanden. Was tut sie? Wie kann sie sich in einem ungünstigen Kontext durchsetzen? Wie massenhaft und inklusiv ist diese Bewegung und wie geht sie mit inneren Konflikten um? Kerndaten dieser Studie sind qualitative Interviews mit Feminist*innen aus vier Städten in Russland, ergänzt durch mehrjährige Beobachtung der feministischen Szenen. Aufgrund dieser Daten behaupte ich, dass die zeitgenössische feministische Bewegung in Russland eine dezentrale Basisbewegung ist, welche Macht auf mehreren Ebenen der sozialen Organisation herausfordert. Neben dem öffentlichen Protest übt sie diskursive Politik aus und wirkt durch die Einführung neuer Definitionen und Denkweisen direkt auf die Gesellschaft. Intersektional betrachtet wird die Bewegungsbeteiligung durch Mehrfachmarginalisierung aufgrund des Ressourcenmangels und Disempowerment beeinträchtigt. Kollektive Lösungen können Ressourcenumverteilung und Berücksichtigung von Differenz darstellen. Debatten um Differenz und Inklusion sind ein zentraler Bereich, in welchem die feministische Bewegung soziale Innovation herstellt. Schließlich verortet diese Studie die zeitgenössische feministische Bewegung in Russland in einem globalen postkolonialen Kontext. Ich behaupte, dass ein lineares Fortschrittsnarrativ, welches Feminismus als Kennzeichen der westlichen Moderne konstruiert, die Beziehung zwischen russländischen und westlichen Feminismen sowie die Machtdynamiken zwischen Feminist*innen in Metropolen, (post-)kolonialen und nichtkolonialen Peripherien Russlands prägt. An scheinbar für eine feministische Praxis ungeeigneten Orten widerstehen Feminist*innen kolonialen und imperialen Narrativen und betreiben eine auf lokalen Erfahrungen basierende feministische Politik.
    Abstract: The words “Russia” and “feminism” seem to be an unlikely combination. Russia is better known for neopatriarchal policies leaving little room for feminism. Yet a grassroots feminist movement has been growing in Russia since the last 15 years. What kind of movement is this? What does it do? How does it sustain itself and grow in a largely unfavorable context? How mass and inclusive is this movement and how does it deal with internal conflicts? The core data in this research are qualitative interviews with feminists in four cities across Russia complemented by direct and online observation of feminist scenes. Drawing upon this data, I argue that the contemporary feminist movement in Russia is a decentralized grassroots movement that challenges power on various levels of social organization. Besides public protest, it notably uses discursive politics that act directly upon society by introducing new definitions and ways of thinking. Feminist communities serve as platforms where these innovations are developed and tried out. From an intersectional perspective, I argue that due to lack of resources and disempowerment, multiple marginalization negatively affects participation in the movement. A collective way to address this can be resource redistribution and consideration of difference. Debates over difference and inclusion are, I argue, a crucial area in which the feminist movement produces social innovation. Finally, this research places the contemporary feminist movement in Russia in a global postcolonial context. I argue that a linear progress narrative that constructs feminism as a hallmark of Western modernity impacts both the relationship between Russian and Western feminisms and power dynamics between feminists in Russian metropolitan centers, (post)colonial and non-colonial peripheries. In places deemed unsuited for feminist practice, I argue, feminists resist colonial and imperial narratives and do feminist politics rooted in local experience.

    Abstract: "Bringing together insights from masculinity studies and age studies for the first time, this volume focuses on the gendered and relational perspectives in cultural representations of Alzheimer's disease. In the cultural context of many societies, Alzheimer's disease has come to represent the 'dark side' of longevity in the 21st century. While the dream of a long life has become a real possibility for many people, it has simultaneously given rise to new anxieties focused on cultural fears of 'demented' old age. In expert discourse as well as in personal accounts, Alzheimer's has produced what might be called a 'master narrative' that limits representation and narration and questions traditional views of selfhood and human development. Combining a comparative and interdisciplinary approach with a gendered perspective, the essays in this volume engage with Alzheimer's as a disease of ageing masculinities, drawing on representations of the disease in many different cultural contexts. Examining a broad range of source material, including memoir, film, poetry and prose fiction, this book looks at work from a wide range of authors, including Anne Carson, Philip Roth and Jonathan Franzen."--

    Abstract: "All aspects of illness and healthcare are mediated by language: experiences of illness, death and healthcare provision are talked and written about (face-to-face or online), while medical consultations, research interviews, public health communications and even some diagnostic instruments are all inherently linguistic in nature. How we talk to, about and for each other in such a sensitive context has consequences for our relationships, our sense of self, how we understand and reason about our health, as well as for the quality care we receive. Yet, linguistic analysis has been conspicuously absent from the mainstream of medical education, health communication training and even the medical or health humanities. The chapters in this volume bring together applied linguistic work using discourse analysis, corpus methods, conversation analysis, metaphor analysis, cognitive linguistics, multiculturalism research, interactional sociolinguistics, narrative analysis, and (im)politeness to make sense of a variety of international healthcare contexts and situations.     Abstract: "Without the State explores the 2013-14 Euromaidan protests--a wave of demonstrations and civil unrest in Ukraine--through in-depth ethnographic research with leftist, feminist, and student activists in Kyiv. The book is organized around the concept of "self-organization," the notion that if something needs to be done and a person has the competence to do it, then they should simply do it. Emily Channell-Justice reveals how self-organization in Ukraine came out of leftist practices but was adopted by actors from across the spectrum of political views over the course of Euromaidan, including far-right groups. The book shows how the widespread adoption of self-organization has encouraged Ukrainians to rethink their expectations of the relationship between citizens and their state. It explains how self-organized practices have changed people’s views on what they think they can contribute to their own communities, and in the wake of Russia’s renewed invasion of Ukraine in 2022, it has also motivated new networks of mutual aid within Ukraine and beyond. Based on ethnographic fieldwork, including the author’s first-hand experience of the entirety of the Euromaidan protests, Without the State provides a unique analytical account of this crucial moment in Ukraine’s post-Soviet history."

    Abstract: Sino-Japanese Reflections offers ten richly detailed case studies that examine various forms of cultural and literary interaction between Japanese and Chinese intellectuals from the late Ming to the early twentieth century. The authors consider efforts by early modern scholars on each side of the Yellow Sea to understand the language and culture of the other, to draw upon received texts and forms, and to contribute to shared literary practices. Whereas literary and cultural flow within the Sinosphere is sometimes imagined to be an entirely unidirectional process of textual dissemination from China to the periphery, the contributions to this volume reveal a more complex picture: highlighting how literary and cultural engagement was always an opportunity for creative adaptation and negotiation. Examining materials such as Chinese translations of Japanese vernacular poetry, Japanese engagements with Chinese supernatural stories, adaptations of Japanese historical tales into vernacular Chinese, Sinitic poetry composed in Japan, and Japanese Sinology, the volume brings together recent work by literary scholars and intellectual historians of multiple generations, all of whom have a strong comparative interest in Sino-Japanese studies.
