    Abstract: 〈p〉Anonymity practices in electronic music culture have long been the object of journalistic and academic discourse. Yet anonymity itself is ephemeral and ontologically precarious. How can scholars research anonymous entities without impairing their anonymity, and what can they learn from their precarity?〈br /〉This study describes two projects of anonymity performance as forms of critical practice (Judith Butler/Michel Foucault) involving performative play with anonymity through the use of fake identities or collaborative persona imaginations. Adopting a reflexive and performative writing style, this performance ethnography calls for a radical performative turn and an ontological reflexivity in the cultural studies of music.〈/p〉

    Abstract: In the early years of the Cold War, Western nations increasingly adopted strategies of public diplomacy involving popular music. While the diplomatic use of popular music was initially limited to such genres as jazz, the second half of the 20th century saw a growing presence of various popular genres in diplomatic contexts, including rock, punk, reggae, and hip-hop.This volume illuminates the interrelation of popular music and public diplomacy from a transnational and transdisciplinary angle. The contributions argue that, as popular music has been a crucial factor in international relations, its diplomatic use has substantially impacted the global musical landscape of the 20th and 21st centuries

    Abstract: Everyday articulations of music, place, urban politics, and inclusion/exclusion are powerfully present in Istanbul. This volume analyzes landscapes of music, community, and exclusion across a century and a half. An interdisciplinary group of scholars and artists presents four case studies: the rembetika, the music of the Asiks, the Zakir/Alevi tradition, and hip-hop, in Beyoglu, Üsküdar, the gentrifying Sulukule neighborhood, and across the metropolis. Alex Papadopoulos is Associate Professor of Geography at DePaul University, Chicago. He studies the contestation of urban space in European cities. Asli Duru is Marie Curie Fellow at The Open University, London, and studies everyday geographies of health and wellbeing.

    Abstract: Wie analysiert man eigentlich populäre Musik? Nach zwei Jahrzehnten eines überwiegend kulturwissenschaftlichen Blicks auf den Gegenstand besinnt sich die Popularmusikforschung wieder auf ihre Kernkompetenz: auf die Beschreibung von Musik als akustisches Phänomen. Die etablierten Techniken der Untersuchung von Kunstmusik erweisen sich hier jedoch als nur bedingt transferierbar.     Abstract: Sex ist Ekstase – und auch Musik kann Ekstase sein. Sex provoziert – und schafft durch Skandale Öffentlichkeit für die Ware Musik. Sex polarisiert – und ist daher Mittel der Distinktion für die Musik von sozialen Gruppen und Generationen. Populäre Musik ist ein Kulturprodukt, das in besonderem Maße jugendliche Lebenswelten repräsentiert. Wie kaum ein anderes Medium gibt sie Aufschluss über männliche und weibliche Identitätsmodelle und damit verbundene Machtstrukturen, über Moralvorstellungen, über intime Wünsche, Sehnsüchte, Hoffnungen und Idealvorstellungen in der Gesellschaft. So umfassend wie in diesem Band wurde das intime Verhältnis von Sex und Musik bisher noch nicht aufgearbeitet

    Abstract: Städte haben ihren individuellen Sound - einen Klang, der sich auch musikalisch darstellt. Dazu gehört - aber nicht nur - die Umsetzung von industriellem Krach in futuristische »rumori« oder konkreten »bruit«. Städte sind Zentren der Kommunikation, hochaktive Knotenpunkte globaler Netzwerke. Hier treffen Menschen mit den unterschiedlichsten ethnischen, sozialen und kulturellen Hintergründen sowie musikalischen Bedürfnissen und Fähigkeiten aufeinander. Aus dieser Konfrontation entstehen Musiken, in denen sich ihr Anderssein und ihre Identität manifestieren, in denen sich aber auch Spuren der Anpassung und Integration finden - und die fast immer populäre Musikformen annehmen. Denn die Stadt als Handelsplatz macht zur Ware, was zuvor als Volksmusik mündlich tradiert wurde oder als Kunst gemeint war. Die Stadt ermöglicht unendlich viele Chancen der Kommunikation, die doch nie ausreichend zu sein scheinen.

Obwohl in der Vergangenheit Wettbewerbe oft entscheidend für die Weiterentwicklung der populären Musik wie auch der Kunstmusik waren, haben sich weder Musik- noch Kulturwissenschaften bisher ausführlich mit dem Thema auseinander gesetzt. Der Band untersucht Wettbewerbe, die aktuell Schlagzeilen machen, knüpft jedoch auch Verbindungen zur Geschichte dieser Form und zu vergleichbaren Events in anderen Kulturen.
