    Abstract: "The Syriac Orthodox community is a religious minority which has been neglected for a long time by the Ottoman and Turkish historiography. This book aspires to provide a method and information for a new understanding of the community in the contemporary context. Based on a fieldwork consisting of interviews, participant observations complemented by historical and contemporary texts, it reveals the emergence of new socio-political dynamics among the Syriacs of Istanbul in their relationship to Turkish contemporary society and diaspora. The survey shows that these Eastern Christians have been, and are today, under the influence of a larger phenomenon, that is the globalization of Christianity, marked by Catholicism and recent forms of Protestantism"--

Edgar Morin denkt „den Menschen“ nicht als Tatsache, nicht als Gegebenheit, Bewußtsein oder Körper, auch nicht als selbstverständliche unbemerkt dominante Ausgangsbedingung, sondern als emergent, als auftauchend, und als relational, nämlich speziell hervorgehend aus seiner Verschränktheit mit den bewegten Bildern. Dieses Auftauchen und Verschränken geschieht dabei stets und jederzeit durch Film, nicht im paläo-anthropologischen Sinn einer ursprünglichen und abgeschlossenen Menschwerdung. „Der Mensch“ ist bei Morin ein supervenierender Effekt, der mit den Bedingungen seines Abhebens oder Einsetzens so verschränkt ist und vor allem so auf sie zurückwirkt, dass Ursache und Wirkung, Früheres und Späteres usw. ununterscheidbar werden. Imaginäres und Faktisches, Projektion und Identifikation, Anthropo- und Kosmomorphismus, Tod und Leben sind durch Film grundverstrickt, ehe sie sich überhaupt auseinanderdividieren. Von diesem Sachverhalt handelt Morins Buch, ganz konzentriert auf Film als bedingte Bedingung und als Medium der menschlichen Emergenz, d. h. Existenz.

Über diese Männer und den Ritterstand hinaus entwickelte es eine ungeheure Strahlkraft: Ritterliche Normen prägten vom Kaiser bis hin zum einfachen Bürger die mittelalterlichen Gesellschaften. Diese ritterliche Kultur drückte sich insbesondere durch das Selbstverständnis aus, Krieger zu sein. Chivalry is important not only for the self-image of the social group of knighted men, whose numbers declined over the course of the Middle Ages. An extraordinary power radiated from it: chivalrous norms shaped medieval societies as a whole, from Holy Roman Emperor to burgher. This knightly culture was especially expressed in the knight's self-understanding as warrior. Consequently, physical violence stood at the centre, not periphery, of representation and communication in social, military, and political life.     Abstract: L’islam Ouest-africain compte plusieurs confréries soufies notamment au Nord-Nigeria, au Niger et au Sénégal, des pays où la Tijāniyya occupe une place importante dans la sphère publique. Dans la première partie de ce livre, par une perspective comparatiste utilisant les concepts de démocratie, de laïcité, de domination et de violence, l’auteur montre comment ceux-ci sont déployés au niveau local surtout dans le champ politique sénégalais. Dans une deuxième, il s’engage dans un décryptage des relations complexes entre religion et politique dans le Sénégal des deux régimes d’alternance, utilisant alors une approche bourdieusienne de la domination. Bien des marabouts interviennent pour arrêter les projets de personnalisation du pouvoir central. Leur intervention politique sous forme d’appel à la non-violence parvient à stabiliser le Sénégal. West African Islam has several Sufi orders, particularly in Northern Nigeria, Niger and Senegal, countries where the Tijāniyya occupies an important place in the public sphere. In the first part of this book, through a comparative perspective therefore using the concepts of democracy, secularism, domination and violence, the author depicts how these categories are exercised at the local level, especially in the political field. In the second part, he engages in deciphering the complex relations between religion and politics in the so-called alternance regimes between 2000 and 2020, using a Bourdieusian approach to domination. Many marabouts intervene to stop the projects of personalization of the central power. The author concludes that there is a new form of community democracy that Sufi guides use to politically stabilize Senegal.

It focuses on the ways in which Rome's dominance influenced, changed, and created landscapes, and examines in which ways (Roman) landscapes were narrated and semantically represented. To assess the impact of Rome on landscapes, some of the twenty contributions in this volume analyse functions and implications of newly created infrastructure. Others focus on the consequences of colonisation processes, settlement structures, regional divisions, and legal qualifications of land. Lastly, some contributions consider written and pictorial representations and their effects. In doing so, the volume offers new insights into the notion of 'Roman landscapes' and examines their significance for the functioning of the Roman empire"--

Der Band versammelt Beiträge, die diese Fragen unter theoretischen Aspekten, im Hinblick auf die Positionierungen der AutorInnen im literarischen Feld und auf Dynamiken des Buchmarkts sowie in einzelnen Fallstudien untersuchen.
    Abstract: In the last years numerous German-language texts written by authors of Eastern and Southeastern European origin appeared. This phenomenon, already referred to as the "eastward expansion of German-language literature" and the "eastern turn", indicates a diversification of contemporary literature that can no longer be adequately captured by a label such as "migration literature". Are there specific writing styles and perspectives in these texts and how is this mediated with their reception? At the same time, however, this raises the question of the status of an attribution of origin such as 'Eastern Europe'. This volume brings together contributions that examine these questions in theoretical perspective, with regard to the positioning of authors in the literary field and to book market dynamics, as well as in individual case studies.

    Abstract: "Postcolonialism refers not only to the historical epoch after the end of the colonial era, but also to a theoretical concept for the analysis of power relations. In German-speaking theology, this concept has so far received little attention. In the bilingual volume Postcolonialism, theology and the construction of the other, scholars of all theological disciplines, including religious studies, explore the heuristic possibilities that postcolonialism provides for their subject. In particular, the question is how "the other" is constructed as the counterpart of a "we."     Abstract: The English-German collection 'Herder on Empathy and Sympathy: Einfühlung und Sympathie im Denken Herders' considers the meaning and role of the concepts of empathy and sympathy in Herder's thought. Herder invokes sympathy in a number of disciplinary domains ranging from metaphysics, biology, anthropology, epistemology, psychology, morality, politics, history, aesthetics to homiletics. While Herder is shown as belonging to a long line of thinkers who view sympathy as a metaphysical principle contributing to the interconnectedness of all parts of nature, he also offers new insights about intra-/inter-species sympathetic communication and distinctively human varieties of sympathy for which he reserves the term "sich einfuhlen". Acknowledging the limits of the natural capacity for "sich einfuhlen", Herder nonetheless calls for its reflective cultivation in various domains.

    Abstract: "Devotion and Protection in Islam deals with hand-written documents in the scroll format dating from the 14th-19th centuries. These documents can be attributed to various geographic contexts: a. the triangle between the cities of Tabriz, Konya and Bagdad; b. the Persianate world; c. the Ottoman Empire. These scrolls were appreciated by members of different associations (Männerbünde; e.g. Sufi orders, Futuwwa and Aḫīgroups). This study analyses the textual and ornamental vocabulary applied on the scrolls. The copied texts mostly comprise passages from the Quran and prayers. Certain features suggest that such scrolls were often produced in heterodox environments. Additionally, this study underscores the high art-historical value of these documents, particularly appreciated by members of the ruling elites. Schutz und Andacht im Islam befasst sich mit handschriftlichen Dokumenten in Rollenform, die zwischen dem 14. und 19. Jh. entstanden sind. Die vorgestellten Belegstücke stammen aus unterschiedlichen geographischen Kontexten: a. Städtedreieck Tabriz-Konya-Bagdad; b. persischer Kulturraum; c. Osmanisches Reich. Diese Rollen waren bei Angehörigen von Männerbünden (Sufi-Orden, Futuwwa- und Aḫī-Gruppierungen, Gilden) beliebt. Die Studie untersucht das auf diesen Dokumenten verwendete textliche und gestalterische Vokabular. Neben Passagen aus dem Koran (auch vollständige Abschriften) lassen sich oft Gebete und weitere Texte frommen Inhalts feststellen. Gelegentlich finden sich Hinweise, dass die Dokumente aus heterodoxen Umfeldern stammen.     Abstract: "Postcolonialism refers not only to the historical epoch after the end of the colonial era, but also to a theoretical concept for the analysis of power relations. In German-speaking theology, this concept has so far received little attention. In the bilingual volume Postcolonialism, theology and the construction of the other, scholars of all theological disciplines, including religious studies, explore the heuristic possibilities that postcolonialism provides for their subject. In particular, the question is how "the other" is constructed as the counterpart of a "we." In times of global migration and growing right-wing extremism, theology must remain capable to offer answers to the urgent questions of the present.
    Abstract: Postkolonialismus bezeichnet nicht nur die historische Epoche nach dem Ende der Kolonialzeit, sondern auch ein theoretisches Konzept zur Analyse von Herrschaftsverhältnissen. In der deutschsprachigen Theologie wurde dieses Konzept bisher wenig beachtet. Im zweisprachigen Sammelband Postkolonialismus, Theologie und die Konstruktion des Anderen erkunden Vertreter aller theologischen Disziplinen einschließlich der Religionswissenschaft die heuristischen Möglichkeiten, die der Postkolonialismus für ihr Fach bietet. Es geht dabei insbesondere um die Frage, wie „der Andere“ als Gegenüber eines „Wir“ konstruiert wird. Gerade in Zeiten globaler Migration und erstarkenden Rechtsextremismus muss Theologie sprachfähig bleiben, um den drängenden Fragen der Gegenwart Antwortangebote bieten zu können.

    Abstract: Ecritures digitales aims to demonstrate how digital writing contributes to the emergence of ?a new relationship between the human body and the machine? as Jacques Derrida proposed when he considered the effects of new technologies. This reconfigured relationship, not surprisingly, is also influencing the digital future of the Jewish-Christian textual corpus referred to as ?the Scriptures?. The French title brings together this duality in one expression: Ecritures digitales. The English subtitle makes explicit the double meaning of the unique French word Ecritures: Digital writing, digital Scriptures. With a full French version and an abbreviated English version, this monograph analyzes the main challenges and opportunities for both writing and the Scriptures in the transition to digital culture.     Abstract: This work provides an insight into the transmission of the Letters of Paul into Arabic. It aims to understand the lack of interest since the beginning of the 20th century for the Arabic manuscripts of the New Testament and to contribute to the current scholarly rediscovery for this field by studying the largely unexplored corpus of the Arabic manuscripts of the Letters of Paul. After a broad overview with the help of a list of witnesses, the study focuses on a specific manuscript: Vaticanus Arabicus 13. The edition of First Corinthians of this 9th century document is followed by a close analysis of linguistic and philological aspects, while the underlining of interesting exegetical points reveals the theological interest of the text

    Abstract: "Edition of a recital in Mandinka by Maalan̳ Galisa (October 1988) on the political constitution and living conditions in Kaabu, a territory situated between present Gambia, Senegal and Guinea-Bissau, known since the 16th century, ... destroyed in 1867. The narrative presents a range of topics covering governance, codes of conduct of warriors, clerics, slaves and 'strangers', rules of slavery, marriage and succession, the cohabitation of different religions, relations of age and gender. This text is distinctive from others focussing on a single founder-patriarch, Tiramakan of the Epic of Sunjata. Galisa focuses on South-eastern Kaabu, bordering on the region of Labé (Guinea). He adds local colours to the Mandinka model, depicting powerful women and violent conflicts resulting from injustice."--Provided by the publisher

    Abstract: Volume 18 in the series 'Yearbook of the Research Centre for German and Austrian Exile Studies' is entitled 'Exile and Gender II: Politics, Education and the Arts'. It is edited by Charmian Brinson, Jana Barbora Buresova and Andrea Hammel, and is intended as a companion volume to Volume 17, which focused on literature and the press. This new volume considers the life and work of exiled women politicians, academics and artists, among others, examining the ways? both positive and negative - in which their exile affected them.
