Abstract: "Scholars across disciplines on both sides of the Atlantic have recently begun to open up, as never before, the scholarly study of race and racism in France. These original essays bring together in one volume new work in history, sociology, anthropology, political science, and legal studies. Each of the eleven articles presents fresh research on the tension between a republican tradition in France that has long denied the legitimacy of acknowledging racial difference and a lived reality in which racial prejudice shaped popular views about foreigners, Jews, immigrants, and colonial people. Several authors also examine efforts to combat racism since the 1970s."--

Abstract: "Never since the close of World War II have anti-Jewish sentiments gained such currency in France among so many different social groups. Never have these sentiments been so publicly expressed and met so little intellectual and political resistance as they have since the year 2000. As the number of anti-Jewish incidents escalates, the anti-racist demonstrations that ordinarily would respond to them are nowhere in sight." "In Rising from the Muck, Pierre-Andre Taguieff raises questions about this shockingly common acceptance of anti-Semitic attitudes and behavior. He surveys the landscape of contemporary anti-Semitism from his position on the scene, describing its leading figures and the role played by the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians. He analyzes in detail the Islamist influence in promoting anti-Zionism, and the blindess, complacency, or complicity of various French institutions, groups, and individuals." "The new wave of anti-Semitism spreading around the world, Mr. Taguieff shows, is based on a polemical and fanciful amalgam of Jews, Israelis, and "Zionists" as representatives of an evil power. In the eyes of the new anti-Jews, the world's ills can be explained by Israel's existence. The chief occupation, purveyed especially by international Islamist circles and the heirs to Third Worldism, is that "Zionism," far from being a respectable nationalism like that of the Palestinians, is actually a form of colonialism, imperialism, and racism. The old European anti-Semitism, the author notes, was a particular kind of racism, directed against Jews. The new worldwide anti-Semitism seeks to turn the charge of racism against the Jews."--BOOK JACKET.

Abstract: Praise for Hoover's bestseller How to Work for an Idiot: "Anyone who has to work should read How to Work for an Idiot." - USA Today "Dr. Hoover recommends admitting that you are 'powerless' over the jerks in your life. Otherwise, 'harboring all that resentment is like drinking a cup of poison and waiting for the jerk to die'." - The Wall Street Journal "'How to Work for an Idiot' contains a lot of humor, with plenty of good information as well." - Campbell Brown, Weekend Today Show "There is no question that How to Work for an Idiot is a subversive book. People will pick it up expecting a tasty blend of commiseration and advice. They will put it down thinking, to paraphrase the famous line from the cartoon character Pogo, 'We have met the idiot, and he is us'." - The New York Times "Dr. John's 'How to Work for an Idiot' is very funny stuff, with some stinging jabs in there." - Neil Cavuto, FOX News "...an irreverent and realistic look at what people must deal with every day at work." - CNNfn "After reading How to Work for an Idiot, I feel that I have become a better boss myself." -Stew Leonard, owner of Stew Leonard's Inc. How to Work for an Idiot is the confession of a recovering "I-Boss" (Idiot Boss). After decades of writing and consulting, John Hoover, also known as Dr. John, finally realized that the vast majority of people he kept trying to energize, to motivate, and to enlighten were, well-idiots. He also realized that he was an idiot for trying to change them. Instead, he has decided to enlighten you, the poor schlubs, who actually must continue working for these idiot bosses. You cannot change them. You cannot challenge them. And, no, you cannot practice anything on them you saw on CSI or even CSI: Miami. But, you can survive them, even thrive under them, if only you know how to deal with them. How to Work for an Idiot contains real solutions for real problems that employees must deal with every day: • Idiot-speak-How to speak and understand your I-Boss's language. • Idiot-eat-What to do when your I-Boss gets lettuce stuck in her teeth at lunch. • How to appear dumber than your boss-a key way to save your job and go far in it. So, despair no longer-this book offers hope for the spirit, strategy for the mind, and the essential ins-and-outs of dealing with an idiot boss. And it wouldn't hurt idiot-bosses themselves to take a look at what Dr. John says in this book. John Hoover, Ph.D. is an organizational leadership consultant, a former ...

Abstract: Marsha Molloy has had it. Once a top medical products sales representative so crackerjack her nickname was Marsha Money, she's been laid low by a tough economy and just plain exhaustion. The former top producer has seemingly lost her touch and grown indifferent to a sales culture that appears to value faxes, e-mails, and cell phone chats instead of the relationship building that had been her forte. Enter Bob Rawlings, the owner of Marsha's local gardening store. In Bob's 30 plus years as a successful sales professional, he experienced the same career frustrations, but found that if he treated his business like his garden, his business grew-and a happier, more relaxed salesman appeared. Bob teaches Marsha the secrets of his sales garden, helping her to recharge her career. The clever sales garden metaphor will change you the way you think about sales. By adhering to the easy, practical steps outlined in Sprout!, you, too, can beat career blues, increase your sales, and sustain yourself for the long term.

Abstract: What is this book about? Expert One-on-One J2EE Development without EJB shows Java developers and architects how to build robust J2EE applications without having to use Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB). This practical, code-intensive guide provides best practices for using simpler and more effective methods and tools, including JavaServer pages, servlets, and lightweight frameworks. What does this book cover? The book begins by examining the limits of EJB technology -- what it does well and not so well. Then the authors guide you through alternatives to EJB that you can use to create higher quality applications faster and at lower cost -- both agile methods as well as new classes of tools that have evolved over the past few years. They then dive into the details, showing solutions based on the lightweight framework they pioneered on SourceForge -- one of the most innovative open source communities. They demonstrate how to leverage practical techniques and tools, including the popular open source Spring Framework and Hibernate. This book also guides you through productive solutions to core problems, such as transaction management, persistence, remoting, and Web tier design. You will examine how these alternatives affect testing, performance, and scalability, and discover how lightweight architectures can slash time and effort on many projects. What will you learn from this book? Here are some details on what you'll find in this book: How to find the simplest and most maintainable architecture for your application Effective transaction management without EJB How to solve common problems in enterprise software development using AOP and Inversion of Control Web tier design and the place of the Web tier in a well-designed J2EE application Effective data access techniques for J2EE applications with JDBC, Hibernate, and JDO How to leverage open source products to improve productivity and reduce custom coding How to design for optimal performance and scalability

Abstract: Micromanagement is one of the most widely condemned managerial sins, and one of the most common employee complaints. It contributes to low morale, high turnover, inefficiency, instability, and lack of continuity in an organization. Being perceived as a micromanager can also have significant negative ramifications on your career. But Harry Chambers proves that micromanagement can be identified and resisted-both by those who (often unknowingly) inflict it and by those who are its victims. Chambers details the defining traits of micromanagers, and provides a Micromanagement Potential Indicator (MPI) test to help you evaluate whether (and to what extent) you might be a micromanager. He provides real-world examples of micromanagement in action, analysis of the damage it does, and advice on what to do about it-whether you're the victim or the perpetrator. He offers detailed, field-tested strategies that will eliminate the damage that over-controlling behavior causes and increase creativity, risk-taking, productivity, and initiative in any organization.

Abstract: Management books are traditionally written by industry "experts": scholars, consultants, senior managers. They're writing about how to manage workers, but none of these experts really understands the viewpoint of the average worker, the regular grunt in the trenches-the peon. Peons are the ones affected when a manager decides to manage-in-one-minute, to move somebody's cheese, to try that fifth discipline. Rather than consult some expert, why not go to the source, and ask the peons? Who better to teach you how to train a dog than the dog himself? And who better to tell you how to manage than one of those who are being managed? The Peon Book gives managers the perspective they've been lacking. Author and self-proclaimed Chief Executive Peon Dave Haynes' sole, powerful source of expertise is that he has been managed in different companies and in different industries, and he knows what worked-and what failed catastrophically. In irreverent, straight-talking terms, Haynes tells managers what they really need to do to make their employees motivated, committed, and productive-and it's not memorizing yet another "technique" or "strategy" or "discipline." Haynes writes in a common sense, easy-to-read style that is both witty and wise. Every boss can benefit, and every employee can empathize with the words in The Peon Book. "The inability to empathize can be a real speed bump on the road to a trusting, personal relationship with your employees. So how are you supposed to show more empathy? I take issue with management books that give you a phrase to say to show empathy like 'I understand,' or 'I know what you mean,' or that say that by rephrasing a statement you can show empathy. Don't use some coined phrase to show empathy, just mentally put yourself in our shoes. Sometimes it's just a matter of remembering what it's like to have to get all those reports turned in on a Friday. Or remembering what it's like to have to ask for time off. Or remembering what it's like to be the new guy on the job, and have a hard time remembering everything. Do you see the key concept I'm getting at? Empathy = remembering. Who said you'd never use math in the real world?"

Abstract: Aims and Context -- Aims and Context -- The Labyrinth of Daedalus -- The International Legal Framework -- Domestic Launch Legislation and Regulations -- General Rules of Common Law and Civil Law Susceptible of Governing Liability for Launch Activities -- Escaping the Labyrinth -- Issues in Liability Risk Management and Proposals de Lege Ferenda -- Some Concrete Proposals.
Abstract: Launch activities performed by private entities deal with a complex legal environment. The Space Treaties provide a general liability framework. Launch participants are subject to regulatory or institutional control, and to domestic liability laws. Specific contractual practice has developed due to insurance limitations, the inter-participants' waivers of liability and claims. This book synthesizes information on the norms of play, to allow the grasp of their relative weight and interactions in the assessment of liability risk for launch activities. It reveals a legal framework presently lacking sufficient predictability for an efficient liability risk management: the waivers of liability suffer weaknesses as do all such clauses, and lack uniformity and reliability; and the Space Treaties contain ambiguous terms preventing predictable determination of the States responsible for authorizing and supervising launch activities and for damage compensation, and do not reflect the liability of launch operators. This book offers suggestions of new approaches for: harmonizing waivers of liability to improve their consistency, validity and flow-down; and improving the Space Treaties for their implementation to non-governmental launch activities. In the launch community, the need for lawmaking is less compelling than in fields such as aviation. Nevertheless, adjustments to the present framework are proposed through model clauses and an international instrument, for further thinking and contribution by those sharing the opinion that creative lawmaking is needed now to prepare for tomorrow's endeavors.

Abstract: As a programmer, you need to be able to recognize and improve problematic code, so the program remains in a working state throughout the software lifecycle. Refactoring-the art of improving the design of existing code safely-provides an efficient, reliable system for bringing order to the chaos, and one that keeps the surprises to a minimum! Refactoring can be difficult to learn, but Refactoring Workbook, by consultant William C. Wake, presents the material in a easy-learning format that makes learning enjoyable and effective. For many, the obstacle to learning refactoring is in identifying the "smells"-the potential problem areas-found in code. Instead of having you read about the smells, Refactoring Workbook makes sure you understand them. You'll solve a carefully assembled series of problems, and you'll find yourself learning at a deeper level and arriving at a few insights of your own. Wake uses the workbook method-a learning-focused approach that forces you to apply the techniques presented in the book-in the rest of the book. This approach helps you learn and apply the most important refactoring techniques to your code and, as a side benefit, helps you to think more about creating great code even when you're not refactoring. Refactoring Workbook provides user-friendly references such as: A handy, quick-reference "smell finder" A standard format for describing smells Appendices showing key refactorings A listing of Java™ tools that support refactoring This book is intended for programmers with a knowledge of Java, though a C# or C++ programmer with a basic understanding of Java would also be able to follow and learn from the examples. It can be used as a companion to Martin Fowler's Refactoring (also from Addison-Wesley Professional), which provides step-by-step instructions for many refactorings.

Abstract: In the constantly evolving hedge fund marketplace, nothing is more central--but in many ways, more amorphous and elusive--than risk. Yet there remains no standard for analyzing and measuring risk within this highly secretive, largely unregulated field, leaving the thousands of hedge funds--and the tens of thousands of hedge fund investors--in dangerously dim light. The industry has not solved the "transparency" challenge--communicating risk to investors without disclosing proprietary information. Hedge Fund Risk Fundamentals is the first book to bring these issues to the forefront. With clarity, concision, and minimal math, Richard Horwitz lays out the key components and the cutting-edge processes in the field of hedge fund risk management today. Against that backdrop, he presents a groundbreaking utility destined to set the standard for transparency and risk management within the hedge fund universe. You'll learn why, when it comes to risk management, 1 + 1 = 1.41. For all of those perplexed by the difficulties of assessing risk in hedge fund investing, Horwitz's concepts make for an invaluable road map and a demystifying resource that hedge funds and investors at all levels will find indispensable.

Abstract: The only authoritative reference source on the propagator concept, now thoroughly revised and updated Much has changed in the study of quantum and theoretical chemistry since the publication of the first edition of Propagators in Quantum Chemistry. Advances in computer power and software packages now make it possible to calculate molecular structure, properties, spectra, and reactivity with greater predictive power. Chemical processes, especially under conditions not readily available in the laboratory, can also be much more easily studied via theory and computations. In this environment, the concept of propagators (or Green's functions) is emerging as an increasingly useful tool in the study of atomic and molecular processes. Propagators in Quantum Chemistry, Second Edition presents the theory and basic approximations of propagators in a unified manner as it provides: * A thorough introduction to propagators, and how they can be used to study atomic and molecular properties and spectra * Updated examples and technical details of the use of the propagator concept in various common approximate treatments * Problems that provide the opportunity to work out further details and applications of the theory Propagators, which are still gaining acceptance as tools in theoretical chemistry, have a long-demonstrated power and success in a number of areas including condensed matter physics. Propagators in Quantum Chemistry clearly describes the unprecedented utility and value of propagators, and explores how and why they are becoming increasingly important to scientists and researchers across the scientific spectrum.

Abstract: The classic guide to UNIX® programming-completely updated! UNIX application programming requires a mastery of system-level services. Making sense of the many functions-more than 1,100 functions in the current UNIX specification-is a daunting task, so for years programmers have turned to Advanced UNIX Programming for its clear, expert advice on how to use the key functions reliably. An enormous number of changes have taken place in the UNIX environment since the landmark first edition. In Advanced UNIX Programming, Second Edition, UNIX pioneer Marc J. Rochkind brings the book fully up to date, with all-new, comprehensive coverage including: POSIX Solaris™ Linux® FreeBSD Darwin, the Mac™ OS X kernel And more than 200 new system calls Rochkind's fully updated classic explains all the UNIX system calls you're likely to need, all in a single volume! Interprocess communication, networking (sockets), pseudo terminals, asynchronous I/O, advanced signals, realtime, and threads Covers the system calls you'll actually use-no need to plow through hundreds of improperly implemented, obsolete, and otherwise unnecessary system calls! Thousands of lines of example code include a Web browser and server, a keystroke recorder/player, and a shell complete with pipelines, redirection, and background processes Emphasis on the practical-ensuring portability, avoiding pitfalls, and much more! Since 1985, the one book to have for mastering UNIX application programming has been Rochkind's Advanced UNIX Programming. Now completely updated, the second edition remains the choice for up-to-the-minute, in-depth coverage of the essential system-level services of the UNIX family of operating systems.

Abstract: Starting with simple examples, you¿ll see how the multi-user, local area network applications that Visual FoxPro developers are used to building are constructed in Visual Basic .NET. You¿ll learn how to use Crystal Reports to build reports like the ones you build in FoxPro. You¿ll discover how to use DataAdapters and datasets instead of DBFs. You¿ll see examples of the paradigm shift that client-server programming imposes, and why .NET solves that problem (even when you wouldn¿t need to solve it in FoxPro.) And you¿ll learn how to give your FoxPro and Visual Basic applications smart client remote data access. You¿ll understand how to begin the construction of a database project in Visual Basic with a container form and a MainMenu instead of using _Screen and MSYSMENU. You¿ll learn how variables are declared and used; how menus are controlled; how to use events, and why you have to use events in VB when they¿re unnecessary in FoxPro. You¿ll learn how to build inheritable forms, Visual Basic¿s answer to FoxPro¿s form class templates, to reduce programming to a minimum. You¿ll learn why properties are like variables in FoxPro, but more like functions in VB. And you¿ll learn where Visual Basic adds features that you didn¿t have in FoxPro and didn¿t know that you needed. You¿ll learn where to look for all of those FoxPro commands and functions that you need. And in case you haven¿t yet used SQL Server with FoxPro, the examples will demonstrate how it¿s done first in FoxPro, then in VB .NET. Shows how to build a typical application in Visual FoxPro, including DBF, SQL Server and Internet access; then demonstrates how to build the same type of application in VB .NET Highlights the main differences in specific issues, including printing, events, data access, creation and use of properties Contains an appendix listing the principal FoxPro commands and functions and their Visual Basic equivalents Includes a table showing where to find the settings in the FoxPro¿s Tools, Options menu pages in VB .NET Shows how to access data remotely from your FoxPro and VB .NET applications Explains how project DLLs are created and used in other projects within a solution Shows how to use middle tier business objects to simplify ongoing development Source code downloadable from www.samspublishing.com

Abstract: Distilling many years of Perl experience--including an insiders look at Perl development (the authors are members of the Perl 6 core development team)-- Perl 6 and Parrot Essentials , 2nd Edition is an unparalleled preview of major changes in the widely-anticipated Perl 6. This sneak peek of what's coming in Perl includes succinct but thorough coverage of groundbreaking new developments in Parrot--the language-independent interpreter engine that will execute code written in the new Perl 6 language. Designed to be language independent, Parrot can be used to interpret other dynamic languages such as Python, Tcl, Ruby, and even Java. Perl 6 and Parrot Essentials also uncovers the most revolutionary change in the language itself--Apocalypse 12 on objects. The Apocalypse design documents (in the sense of "revealing", not "end-of-the-world") explain significant changes in new Perl 6 features, numbered according to the chapters in O'Reilly's landmark Camel book , Programming Perl . Apocalypse 12 is the result of cutting-edge research in object-oriented languages and is guaranteed to grab the attention of any serious Perl programmer. Perl 6 and Parrot Essentials also includes expanded coverage of Apocalypse 5 (regular expressions) and Apocalypse 6 (subroutines). Perl 6 and Parrot Essentials is the only book available to chart the course of the long but fruitful voyage of Perl 6. It reveals all the ingenious developments that will make Perl 6 more powerful and easier to use. Perl gurus and programmers alike will rely on this slim but essential book for both a clear view of the Perl horizon and to ensure they hit the ground running once this important new version of Perl is released.

Abstract: If you're ready for an Elements 3 book that breaks all the rules, this is it, because it does something for digital photographers that's never been done before--it cuts through the bull and shows you exactly "how to do it." It tells you, flat-out, which settings to use, when to use them, and why. This book is not a bunch of theory; it doesn't challenge you to come up with your own settings or figure things out on your own. It gives you the same settings used by some of the top digital pros, settings you can use today to get professional results you've always dreamed of. Plus, since this book is designed for photographers, it doesn't waste your time talking about how to frame a shot, setting your exposure, etc. and there's no talk which camera or printer to buy. It's all Elements, step-by-step, cover-to-cover in the only book of its kind, and you¿re gonna love it! Besides learning the inside tips and the tricks of the trade for correcting, editing, sharpening, retouching, and presenting your photos like a pro. You'll learn how to unlock the power of all the new Elements 3 features, including how to manage your photos using the new Organizer, how to use the new "pro tools" like the Healing Brush and the Shadow/Highlight controls, and how to master the new "Creation" section to take your photos to an entirely new level. Plus, you'll see it all step-by-step, in plain English, and you¿ll be absolutely amazed at how easy and effective these techniques are, once you know the secrets. You'll learn: The secrets of how the pros retouch portraits How to incorporate the amazing new features of Elements 3 into your work today! How to color correct any photo without breaking a sweat (you¿ll be amazed at how they do it!) How to repair and restore damaged photos The sharpening techniques the pros really use (there's an entire chapter just on this!) Dealing with common digital camera image problems, including removing noise and avoiding halos When to use Quick Fix, and when to do to it yourself (using our step-by-step methods). The most-requested photographic special effects and much more! But besides all that, this book has a "secret weapon" that makes it the most important, most useful Elements book yet. The reason is this--although Elements 3 offers some digital photography features Photoshop CS doesn't offer, there are plenty of features that Photoshop CS has, that Elements 3 still doesn't have (things like Layer Masking, Channel Mixer, etc.). But in this ...

Abstract: New technologies are revolutionising the way manufacturing and supply chain management are implemented. These changes are delivering manufacturing firms the competitive advantage of a highly flexible and responsive supply chain and manufacturing system to ensure that they meet the high expectations of their customers, who, in today's economy, demand absolutely the best service, price, delivery time and product quality. To make e-manufacturing and supply chain technologies effective, integration is needed between various, often disparate systems. To understand why this is such an issue, one needs to understand what the different systems or system components do, their objectives, their specific focus areas and how they interact with other systems. It is also required to understand how these systems evolved to their current state, as the concepts used during the early development of systems and technology tend to remain in place throughout the life-cycle of the systems/technology. This book explores various standards, concepts and techniques used over the years to model systems and hierarchies in order to understand where they fit into the organization and supply chain. It looks at the specific system components and the ways in which they can be designed and graphically depicted for easy understanding by both information technology (IT) and non-IT personnel. Without a good implementation philosophy, very few systems add any real benefit to an organization, and for this reason the ways in which systems are implemented and installation projects managed are also explored and recommendations are made as to possible methods that have proven successful in the past. The human factor and how that impacts on system success are also addressed, as is the motivation for system investment and subsequent benefit measurement processes. Finally, the vendor/user supply/demand within the e-manufacturing domain is explored and a method is put forward that enables the reduction of vendor bias during the vendor selection process. The objective of this book is to provide the reader with a good understanding regarding the four critical factors (business/physical processes, systems supporting the processes, company personnel and company/personal performance measures) that influence the success of any e-manufacturing implementation, and the synchronization required between these factors. · Discover how to implement the flexible and responsive supply chain and manufacturi...

Abstract: While many architects use PHP for projects, they are often not aware of the power of PHP in creating enterprise-level applications. This book covers the latest version of PHP – version 5 -- and focuses on its capabilities within a multi-tier application framework. It contains numerous coding samples and commentaries on them. A chapter discusses object orientation in PHP as it applies to the multi-tier architecture and other chapters discuss HTTP and SOAP, the two communication protocols most useful in tying together multiple layers. There is also coverage of database design and query construction as well as information about tricks you can use in generating user interfaces. Covers PHP as it relates to developing software in a multi-tier environment—a crucial aspect of developing robust software with low cost and ease of use as design goals. Makes extensive use of Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) and Web Services as implemented in PHP and NuSOAP. Shows precisely how to make use of the InnoDB table type newly available in MySQL. InnoDB supports true referential integrity and row-level locking. An application example (a multi-currency bookkeeping application) runs throughout the book, showing various PHP capabilities as well as the database interaction.
