    Abstract: Spinning Tops & Gumdrops captures a time when `imagination, skill, and daring' was the source of children's play. Quoits and jacks, hide and seek, cricket with a kerosene tin for a wicket, dress ups and charades, can all be seen in these appealing images. Children climb trees, run races, and build rafts to sail on the local waterhole, happily absorbed in the play of their own making. This was also a time when school yard disagreements were sorted out with fists and `the loss of a little claret'. A time when children could view public hangings, and premature death was frequent, especially taking the very young and vulnerable though dysentery, whooping cough, or diphtheria. The word `mollycoddled' has its origins in the mid-nineteenth century, but certainly cannot be applied to the colonial children depicted in Spinning Tops & Gumdrops. Children were often required to work - many at adult jobs - to the neglect of their education, and photographs show children taking part in rural life, tending animals, milking, and harvesting crops. In the cities, too, we see factories using cheap child labour to satisfy the increasing demand for mass produced shoes and clothes, to bake bread, and to process food. Many youngsters found themselves `in service' to the growing middle class. One story is told of an innovative girl who earned pocket money by collecting leeches for the local doctor. There were distinctive gender roles in colonial Australia, and associated dress conventions. As a practical solution to ease toilet training, boys generally wore dresses until five or six years of age, seen in the photographs shown here. Only then they were `breeched' that is, put into breeches. Meanwhile, girls' dresses became longer as they approached womanhood, coinciding with a greater emphasis on modest behaviour and a reshaping of their activity and education to gain home-making skills. The lasting impression left by the contemporary accounts, photographs, etchings, and paintings of colonial children in Spinning Tops & Gumdrops is their possession of qualities of resilience, self-sufficiency, and acceptance of their lot. Perhaps it was through lack of choice, or of knowing no other. Nevertheless, these were qualities that put them in good stead for the challenges many faced in their adulthood. Interestingly, these are qualities on which contemporary society still places a high value, but which today seem a little more elusive

    Abstract: Die Aufdeckung der Missbrauchsfälle an der Odenwaldschule und in katholischen Internaten im Jahr 2010 sowie die Debatten um Daniel Cohn-Bendits Buch "Der Große Basar" 2013 führten zu einem öffentlichen Interesse an den Diskursen über die Befreiung der Sexualität in den 1970er und 1980er Jahren. Diese werden in diesem Sammelband in breitere historische und politisch-kulturelle Kontexte eingeordnet, dabei wird auch die Geschichte des Verhältnisses von kindlicher und erwachsener Sexualität sowie der Wandel generationaler Ordnungen in den Blick genommen. Rekonstruiert werden die Auseinandersetzungen um Pädosexualität innerhalb der Sexualwissenschaft und der Erziehungswissenschaft, die Geschichte der Pädophilie-Bewegungen in nationaler und internationaler Perspektive, die Positionen der GRÜNEN, die Praktiken in antiautoritären Kinderläden, die Geschichte der Beratungsstellen sowie die sexualrechtlichen Rahmungen und Veränderungen jener Jahre. Fokussiert werden darüber hinaus auch theoretische Bezüge um 1968 sowie Diskurse über sexuelle Gewalt gegen Kinder und Jugendliche. Dies leisten international ausgewiesene Wissenschaftler_innen der Erziehungswissenschaft, der Psychoanalyse, der Geschichts- und Politikwissenschaft, der Soziologie und der Gender studies in inter- und transnationaler Perspektive.

    Abstract: In many regions of the world the twenty-first century has started with a structure of endless challenges for social work. Social work seems to be in demand almost everywhere, from support schemes for children and young people into adulthood and on to support for elderly people, in community work in cities and rural regions, in disaster relief and in care for refugees. This book describes the field of social work – its themes, problems and methods – in the face of the concept of the second, reflexive modernisation. The question needs to be asked of how, and whether, social work’s success story from the first modernity can continue. We discuss the second modernity as a time of blurring boundaries. Today, it frequently faces the problem that the organised terms of its approaches come up against a social reality where the frameworks of social life are becoming dynamic.     Abstract: Die Bedeutung des transnationalen deutsch-türkischen Raumes wächst und parallel dazu das Interesse an seiner Erforschung. Bildungsinstitutionen sind ein Teilaspekt der fortschreitenden Transnationalisierung. Die AutorInnen diskutieren, inwiefern deutsche, türkische und deutsch-türkische Bildungsinstitutionen zum Aufbau von transnationalem Bildungskapital (Sprach-, Fach-, Landes- und Kulturkenntnisse) beitragen.     Abstract: This book shows the different ways in which migration matters in the context of global and local childhood and youth. Furthermore, it highlights that childhood, youth and migration as well as local and global perspectives need to be thought and analyzed together, to address the significant dimensions of social inequality in the context of growing up. Migration as a phenomenon is most often motivated by the search for a better life. Very often children and young people, migrating alone or together with their families, migrate to ameliorate their own or others’ living conditions and seize opportunities for realizing a good life. Today as well as in the past this search for a better life is very often triggered by socio-economic reasons, war or terrorism. Against the backdrop of the topic raised above the book deals with children and young people’s own perspective in countries of migration. It promotes the idea of connecting global and local issues of childhood and youth with a special focus on questions of education. It studies questions of global and local living and highlights living circumstances shaped by patterns of migration and mobility.

    Abstract: "How do we interact with people in our everyday life? Who are the people we are connected to? What are the consequences of overlapping social circles and how people deal with the potential emerging conflicts? What are the structural and cultural mechanisms that regulate social worlds? Network science is a scientific approach to the study of network dependencies and associations which tries to answer these and many other questions. This book explores the underlying mechanisms that regulate social life as they are produced, reproduced, modified, and abandoned in the spatial and temporal patterns of interactions. The mixed methods approach, that combines formal network analysis with qualitative materials and statistical tools, shows the importance of contextualising structural mechanisms in their social and cultural environment, and allows overcoming the traditional methodological boundaries that shape the field of social sciences"--

    Abstract: Educational change and reform on a larger scale   Bourdieu for Educators: Policy and Practice, brings the revolutionary research and thinking of Pierre Bourdieu (1930[en]2002) of France to public educational leaders in North America, Canada, Australia, and the U.K. This text brings Bourdieu's corpus into the arena of elementary and secondary educational reform and change, and offers policy, research, and practice discussions. Authors Fenwick W. English and Cheryl L. Bolton use Bourdieu to challenge the standards movement in different countries, the current vision of effective management, and the open market notion connecting pay to performance. The text shows that connecting pay to performance won't improve education for the poorest group of school students in the U.S., Canada, or the U.K., regardless of how much money is spent trying to erase the achievement gap. The authors layout the bold educational agenda of Pierre Bourdieu by demonstrating that educational preparation must take into account larger socioeconomic-political realities in order for educational change and reform to make an impact.
