Abstract: Across the world, there has been a growing dissatisfaction with the tempo of modern life. Described simply as the 'slow phenomenon', this volume explores this new brand of living that entails not simply slowing down but an embracing of alternative activities that promote meaning, thoughtfulness, engagement and authenticity, Across the world, there has been a polite uprising to the perceived meaninglessness and stress of our accelerated and consumer driven lifestyles. Described simply as the slow phenomenon, this new brand of living entails not simply slowing down, but an embracing of alternative activities that promote meaning, thoughtfulness, engagement and authenticity. Whether it is through different practices of food production and consumption, alternative modes of transportation such as cycling through to our intimate relations with others, this new ethic of living has grown immensely in popularity. In this volume of work, key authors from across the world have been brought together to illustrate these alternative approaches to modern lifestyles by analyzing them empirically and theoretically. Through rigorous debate and insightful commentary, this book presents a compelling case for seeing the slow phenomenon as a significant cultural practice in contemporary society

Will biotechnologies bring huge improvements in lifespan and lifestyle? Predictions vary, but children's status as human embodiments of the future puts them at the centre of current attempts to shape the world. In this book, Nicholas Lee argues that, if it can adapt, the discipline of childhood studies can make a critical and creative contribution to future making. Childhood and Biopolitics develops new ways to navigate and analyse childhood as a biopolitical phenomenon that is intimately connected with today's major political and scientific challenges. It addresses cognitive enhancement and mental capital, preventable disease and vaccine development, epidemics, public order, climate change and sustainability. It argues that children should be seen as a reservoir of the creative human ability to 'reframe' and so to respond to challenges and opportunities

Abstract: This book challenges the widely held conjecture that gangs represent 'the new face of youth crime', repudiating claims which situate the gang at the heart of sexual violence, mass shooting and control of the illegal drugs trade and examining how better we might understand the violence of the street and the organisations that inhabit it, Challenging the widely held conjecture that gangs represent 'the new face of youth crime' this book repudiates claims which situate the gang at the heart of sexual violence, mass shooting and control of the illegal drugs trade. It pushes the epistemological, methodological and ontological borders of cultural criminology in order to understand violent street worlds and the informal organisations that operate within them. In part polemic, in part theoretical treatise, the book deciphers the gang talk now mediated by a developing industry of gang-talkers and explores how street realities have become lost in a collectively induced fantasy where gangs are regarded as public enemy number one. The book makes a case for returning to the analysis of street culture and the imperatives that orientate patterns of social action within it. It concludes by examining how better we might understand the violence of the street and the organisations that inhabit it
Abstract: "The 'gang' has become a magical word used to explain away crime, riots, sexual assault, drug dealing and almost every manifestation of violence in our society. Simon Hallsworth's book is a devastating critique: iconoclastic, hard hitting, and amusing. Read it." - Jock Young, John Jay College, City University of New York, USA and author of The Criminological Imagination "Simon Hallsworth's The Gang and Beyond is precisely the sort of boldly brilliant work that criminology badly needs but seldom sees. Strikingly original in its scholarly perspective and in its narrative orientation, this book constitutes an intellectually audacious confrontation with gangs, gang scholarship, and the assumptions that surround them." - Jeff Ferrell, Texas Christian University, USA "Provocative and stimulating, this book provides an emphatic critique of the 'common sense' surrounding youth gangs in the UK and elsewhere. From auto-ethnography to moral outrage at gang talk distortions, Simon Hallsworth provides a personal and powerful indictment of the gang industry within academia, including its convergence with rapidly expanding and inappropriate gang suppression efforts, and its failure to fully understand street culture and street violence. Not to be missed." - Rob White, University of Tasmania, Australia

Abstract: A unique look at the meaning of the taste for wine in Britain, from the establishment of a Commonwealth in 1649 to the Commercial Treaty between Britain and France in 1860 - this book provides an extraordinary window into the politics and culture of England and Scotland just as they were becoming the powerful British state.
Abstract: As a potent symbol of political legitimacy and a leading source of government revenue, wine in England and Scotland was a commodity like no other. This fascinating study shows how the taste for wine both reflected and constructed political power during the two most important centuries of modern British history. Wine, and how one consumed it, was never neutral; instead, it was inextricably linked to political party, social class, national identity, and gender. Wine was thus essential to creating modern Britain

Abstract: A philosophical-cultural exploration, this book expands the discussion of "class" from a novel perspective. Following the current debates about wealth and class, the contributors address the social and cultural phenomena of class from a uniquely innovative philosophical approach and reconsider philosophical "givens" within the context of culture
Abstract: It is clear that the world is in conflict about the status (quo) of capital. Living With Class : Philosophical Reflections on Identity and Material Culture addresses and reflects upon the many different ways in which and through which we find ourselves struggling, surviving, and thriving today. The contributors offers diverse considerations, 'ethnophilosophies, ' about the force, subtleties, and consequences of the many different ways that capitalism, wealth, and poverty continue to dominate our lives and influence our sense of identity, our understanding of material culture, and our continued maintenance of class status. Following the current debates about wealth and class and the longing for a new discursive engagement with this historically defined concept, they examine the social and cultural phenomena of class from a uniquely innovative philosophical approach and reconsider certain philosophical "givens" within the context of culture in the broadest sense of the word, experientially and theoretically
Abstract: "That class is an exceedingly and evermore complex phenomenon is hardly a reason to ignore its importance as a category for understanding society, either in national frameworks or in the world as a whole. There were very good reasons why other categories, such as race, gender, and sexuality, came to the fore in recent decades, one of these reasons being the difficulties in hitherto-existing paradigms to understand modes of production in all of their diverse materiality. The essays in this important book show well how class, complexified, remains crucial to not only understanding the world, but indeed to changing it."--Bill Martin, Professor of Philosophy, DePaul University, USA

Abstract: A study of commercialized opera culture in Russia, exploring the 'melodramatic imagination'
Abstract: In Russia at the turn of the twentieth century, printed literature and performances - from celebrity narratives and opera fandom to revolutionary acts and political speeches - frequently articulated extreme emotional states and passionate belief. A uniquely intense approach to public life and private expression - the 'melodramatic imagination' - is at the center of this study. Previously, scholars have only indirectly addressed the everyday appropriation of melodramatic aesthetics in Russia, choosing to concentrate on canonical texts and producers of mass culture. Abstract: The fads, fashions, and media in popular consumer culture frequently make recreational and ideological ""fun"" of poverty and lower class living. It is a phenomenon that puts poor whites, poor blacks, women, gays, handicapped people, and other traditional minorities back in ""their place"" by prioritizing self-aggrandizing materialism and individual desires over the collective good and constitutes a form of cultural denial. In this book, Halnon delineates how incarceration, segregation, stigmatization, cultural and social consecration, and carnivalization work in the production and consumption

Abstract: "Masturbation, vampires, cannibalism, bareback pornography, menstruation, sex education, and more. These issues provoke the moral panics of sexuality, the often unspoken and politically charged targets for accusations of deviance and threats to the existing social order. A provocative and path-breaking book, this interdisciplinary edited collection showcases the range of historical and contemporary crises we too often suppress. From closeted gay Republicans and vagina dentata imagery, to cyber pinkwashing and sex surrogates for the disabled, these cutting edge essays draw from established and emerging scholars and span over three centuries of sexual panics. Provocative, surprising, engaging, and even shocking, this collection pulls together strange bedfellows and unlikely allies in the fight against the hypocritical, reductive, and dismissive voices promoting unnecessary panic. If you're panicking, you're not thinking."--Publisher's description

Abstract: "Social Movements and their Technologies explores the interplay between social movements and their 'liberated technologies'. It analyzes the rise of low-power radio stations and radical internet projects ('emancipatory communication practices') as a political subject, focusing on the sociological and cultural processes at play. It provides an overview of the relationship between social movements and technology, and investigates what is behind the communication infrastructure that made possible the main protest events of the past fifteen years. In doing so, Stefania Milan illustrates how contemporary social movements organize in order to create autonomous alternatives to communication systems and networks, and how they contribute to change the way people communicate in daily life, as well as try to change communication policy from the grassroots. She situates these efforts in a historical context in order to show the origins of contemporary communication activism, and its linkages to media reform campaigns and policy advocacy"..

Abstract: This collection addresses the ways that Nordic countries have approached the issue of bringing ethnic minorities into the societal mainstream. With multicultural incorporation as an option, the authors explore the potential impact of the politics of identity in societies with social democratic welfare states committed to redistributive politics, Like many other Western democracies, the Nordic countries have vigorously debated whether it is necessary to find new ways of incorporating ethnic minorities into the larger society, leading to the need to decide whether to enter into experiments in multiculturalism or to resist such a prospect. This edited collection addresses the varied ways that four countries have addressed the issue of the inclusion of ethnic minorities - including both old minorities and recent immigrants. Because of their robust social democratic welfare policies, these nations constitute an important research site for exploring the ways in which the politics of identity and recognition play out in societies committed to redistributive politics. Put simply, can the goals of the welfare state and those of multiculturalism coexist in harmony? Are they capable of being mutually reinforcing? Or will they inevitably be at loggerheads, operating in what amounts to a zero-sum game: redistribution at the expense of recognition and vice versa?

Ramirez and P. Hondagneu-Sotelo Gender Identity and Work: Migrant Domestic Work and Masculinity
Abstract: Based on studies conducted in the UK and USA, this book investigates the experiences of suppliers and consumers of masculinized domestic services, exploring issues such as increasing inequality, migration, the rise of commoditized domestic services, contemporary masculinities and the gendering of paid work, As the rich have got richer and households have become busier, demand for commoditized household services has increased. While much is known about maids and nannies, this book is distinctive in focusing on masculinized domestic services. Through two case-studies - Polish handymen in the UK and the households that employ them and Mexican jardineros in the USA - the book demonstrates how, by outsourcing, householders can mitigate the 'father time-bind' arising from tensions between new expectations for involved fathering, economic expectations regarding working hours, and a highly gendered and neo-liberal social policy regime, and shows how the consequences of this reaches beyond the households into the lives of the migrant men who work for them. Through the focus on male domestic work, the book identifies distinctly gendered understandings of domestic work and care, and shows how these influence the differential economic value of and emotional attachment to different forms of domestic work, and the gendered identities of those supplying and buying these services. In doing so, the book reveals much about the dynamic and varied understandings of masculinity

Abstract: Montesquieu is often considered the first social thinker. Today, when 'the end of the social' has been proclaimed, it is time to reconsider its beginnings. In a wide-ranging, original interpretation of The Spirit of the Laws, this book explores what did it mean to 'discover the social', and what can it mean to recover the social today?, Montesquieu has often been considered the first social theorist. Today, when a number of authors have pronounced 'the end of the social', it is time to reconsider its beginnings. What did it mean to 'discover the social'? What did it allow one to say that could not previously be said? What sorts of epistemological moves were required in order for this discovery to become possible? This book responds to these questions with a wide-ranging, original interpretation of The Spirit of the Laws. It demonstrates that Montesquieu provides several different senses and usages of the social, each of which builds on the others. The result is a 'divided concept' that challenges later, more simplistic understandings, and allows him to illuminate a number of the fractures central to our modernity. The last chapter brings the discussion forward, and asks what can be retrieved from Montesquieu in order to confront the present crisis of the social and its associated disciplines

Abstract: Under the themes of Justice, Participation and Social Exclusion contributors explore and discuss the impact on those targeted or excluded by important public and social policies in European countries. Contexts, consequences and controversies current in the global North are uncovered highlighting the ethical implications for policy research, As a result of the impact of neo-liberal economics and the financial crisis on policy development and implementation, economic and social divides are widening and deepening globally. As the causes and consequences of austerity continue to emerge across Europe and internationally, so the key policy impact messages must continue to be told. Under the themes of Justice, Participation and Social Exclusion, contributors to this volume draw on recent examples to explore and discuss the impact of those targeted or excluded by public and social policies in European countries, developed, implemented and evaluated at a time of austerity. Contexts, consequences and controversies current in the global North are uncovered highlighting the ethical implications for policy research and the role of the academic. To bear witness and tell the 'truth' is a standpoint usually associated with religious philosophies. In these turbulent years in Western democracies perhaps one critical role for the academic, recast for post-modern times, is to bear witness to the lives of the powerless and tell their 'truths'. Citizen involvement in policy development can be potent and not merely tokenistic if knowledge becomes a means by which policies can be challenged by those subject to them

Abstract: "Master-Servant Childhood" offers a new understanding of childhood in the Middle Ages as a form of master-servant relation embedded in an ancient sense of time as a correspondence between earthly change and eternal order. It challenges the misnomer that children were 'little adults' in the Middle Ages and corrects the prevalent misconceptions that childhood was unimportant, unrecognized or disregarded. The book argues for the value of studying childhood as a structure of thought and feeling and as an important avenue for exploring large scale historical changes in our sense of what it is to be and become human

Abstract: Political parties can make or break women's attempts to stand for political office, yet there have been surprisingly few systematic studies into the 'secret garden' of political recruitment. This book investigates this under-researched area, bringing together insights from feminist and new institutional theory to explore and understand the gendered dynamics of institutional innovation and change in candidate selection and recruitment. Drawing on an original empirical case study of candidate selection in post-devolution Scotland, Gender and Political Recruitment highlights the complex and gende

Abstract: Mulholland offers a scholarly, yet wholly accessible, critical engagement with young people's negotiation with the pornification of culture. This work foregrounds the affective dynamics in young people's institutional and everyday sexual peer cultures, What is "normal" sexuality for young people? How do they engage with the pornography that saturates popular culture? Are the panics that swirl around young people's access to pornified culture justified? In Young People and Pornography, Mulholland explores young people's own perspectives on the pornification of their world. The book brings the overlooked voices of young people into the debates over sexuality and the role of explicit sexual content in their lives. In the process she concludes that the explicit now occupies a position in public spaces in ways that construct a new normal. However, countering the claims of panic-fuelled public discourses worrying that "anything goes," she reveals how young people use humor, parody, and the spectacular to negotiate pornography in ways that maintain a distance. In addition, Mulholland reveals how young people create meanings about pornified culture remarkably consistent with historical norms of privacy, respectability, and sexuality

Abstract: Eddy M. Souffrant calls for a reassessment of the starting points of moral, social, and political philosophy that takes into account the actual living circumstances of persons living the 21st century, Motivated by the observation that our current social and political theories do not properly account for the actual living circumstances of persons living the 21st century, this book calls for a reassessment of the starting points of moral, social, and political philosophy. Souffrant recognizes that, as it stands, our ethical theories start from a specific conception of the individual. While he believes that this approach has been helpful, he holds however that the contemporary circumstances regarding the way individuals live their lives, their particular interconnectedness and tacit and active participation in the conditions that affect us all, call for a reassessment of the starting points of moral, social and political philosophy

Abstract: Challenging Global Gender Violence provides a qualitative and comparative analysis of women's experiences of violence, healing, and action across cultures, Challenging Global Gender Violence provides a qualitative and comparative analysis of women's experiences of violence, healing, and action across cultures. Gender violence is the most pervasive human rights violation affecting women and children across both the developed and developing world. While the specific cultural contexts and acts of violence vary, the feelings that women express about their experiences of abuse are strikingly similar. So are the images, colors, and words they use to express those feelings. Hearts - bruised, broken, and torn; black and red; NO! and No Mas! are frequently found on shirts contributed to the Global Clothesline Project. While providing a theoretical analysis of trauma, Susan D. Rose grounds the discussion in the lived experiences and stories of women across cultures. Featuring women's stories, artwork, and voices as they speak about their experiences of violence and healing, this brief volume examines the relationship between gender inequality and gender violence, the health impacts of gender violence, and strategies being used to reduce violence against women

Abstract: Using Europe as an example, this book readdresses and updates the concept of 'society', exploring society in the context of both globalization and conflict theory to develop a new theory of society for our times, This book tackles the important task of readdressing and updating the concept of 'society', developing a new theory of society for our times. Taking characteristic elements of our times into account, the book explores society in the context of both globalization and conflict theory and uses Europe as a test case due to its unique position between the nation state and society and between the global and the local. Rejuvenating the concept of society and advancing an original and enhanced understanding of society today, this book will appeal to scholars in Sociology, Politics, Social Theory and European Studies

Abstract: Some states have a long history of reaching out to citizens living in other countries but since 2000 it has become much more common for states to encourage loyalty from current or former citizens living abroad. Using detailed case studies, this book sets out to explain this significant development, with an innovative new theoretical framework, Until very recently emigrants were considered an embarrassment, an irritation or an irrelevance by most states. The long experience of emigrant engagement in certain historical emigration countries, such as Italy, was very much the exception. Since about 2000, countries around the world have shown much greater enthusiasm for policies to encourage the loyalty of nationals who have made a permanent home elsewhere. These developments have changed the relationship between state institutions and emigrant nationals. Policies of emigrant engagement also challenge fundamental understandings about the nature of political society in the modern era; the notion of states as territorial institutions or the understanding of citizenship as membership in a territorially bounded polity are both undermined. This book provides copious evidence of this process, with detailed, comparable case studies of twelve countries and a new theoretical framework that helps explain changing policies towards emigrants

Abstract: This book explores the relationship between social movements, sexual citizenship and change in Southern Europe. Providing a comparative analysis about LGBT issues in Italy, Spain and Portugal, it discusses how activism can generate legal, political and cultural impact in post-dictatorial, Catholic and EU-focused countries, This book explores the relationship between social movements, sexual citizenship and change in the context of Southern Europe. Providing a comparative analysis about LGBT issues in Italy, Spain and Portugal, it discusses how activism can generate political, legal and cultural change in post-dictatorial, Catholic and EU-focused countries. The significance of Portugal regarding sexual citizenship stems from the impressive pace at which LGBT rights were granted after the emergence of a LGBT movement. In some respects, Portugal led the way for LGBT rights in Europe. Offering a close engagement with sociological analysis of Spanish and Italian contemporary LGBT politics, this case study provides an opportunity to rethink collective action and sexual citizenship, contributing to timely theoretical and political debates. Based on extensive fieldwork and original qualitative analysis, the book suggests the notion of 'syncretic activism' as a third way of approaching the debate between assimilationism and radicalism. The notion of syncretic activism offers a synthesis of transformative, transgressive and deconstructionist approaches to identity within diversity politics. These findings have direct implications in the understanding and political potential of collective action, highlighting the complex interplay between aims, strategies and outcomes of LGBT activism in Southern Europe
Abstract: 'A much needed, richly theorised and empirically detailed account across the times and places of 'Southern Europe' and the varied sexual citizenships re-constituting publics, presences and participation in and beyond locales. Santos combines urgent political focus on new activisms, in their material, affective and geographical locateness, intersected with astute academic intervention across inter-disciplines, international contexts and in-between 'academic' and 'activist' outlooks. Questions of recognition, ethics, empathy are weaved into contested notions of rights, mainstreaming and marginalisation. A new vocabulary of 'queer public sociology' and 'syncretic activism' is provided: there is much to learn from this engaging must read book.' -Yvette Taylor, Head of the Weeks Centre for Social and Policy Research, London South Bank University, UK, author of Lesbian and Gay Parenting: Securing Social and Educational Capital 'A powerful and striking account of the dynamic development of LGBT politics in Southern Europe. With impressive original sources, Santos offers a sensitive, highly attuned depiction of the conflict and change facing organised sexual minorities struggling for visibility, inclusion and social transformation across the institutions of state and nation.' - Davina Cooper, Professor of Law & Political Theory, University of Kent, UK

Abstract: This book makes the case for an urgent praxis of critical spatial literacy for African women. It provides a critical analysis of how Asante women negotiate and understand the politics of contemporary space in Accra and beyond and the effect it has on their lives, demonstrating how they critically 'read that world.', This book makes the case for an urgent praxis of critical spatial literacy for African women. It provides a critical analysis of how Asante women negotiate and understand the politics of contemporary space in Accra and beyond and the effect it has on their lives, demonstrating how they critically "read that world." Additionally, the book provides insight into Asante women's perspectives on their urban living conditions, their sense of place in Ghana's capital and the world at large, and how they make sense of these contemporary spaces, which are the result of transnational economic and cultural flows. In other words, the author discusses and recounts experiences surrounding her development and execution of a renegade African-feminist architecture project that reveals Asante women's critical literacy of contemporary space in terms of what they describe as its significant socio-spatial effects of akwantu, anibuei, ne sikasepsilonm: that is, travel, 'civilization,' and economics
